Services tomorrow for Phillip Hensler Preacher

DOWNEY-Memorial services will be heard tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 18) at 10 a.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 10354 Downey Ave., for Phillip Hensler Preacher, past national president of Spring Air Mattress Company and a longtime Downey resident.

He was 73, born in Clarendon County, Texas, May 3, 1924, and died Oct. 9 due to cancer.

He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge and a 47 year member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, where he was senior warden, senior usher, and a member of the vestry.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Elsie Preacher and Rhea Disrud Preacher.

Survivors include his sons, D.H. (Deek) Preacher of Gardena and Jon Preacher of Gavilan Hills; a daughter, Phyllis Black of Downey; brother Dirl Preacher of Placerville; and a sister, Viola Druyor of Buena Park.

Private cremation will follow with entombment in St. Mark's Church Memorial Shrine.

Arrangements are by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.

Friends, family mourn Ernest Botello at 82

DOWNEY-A Mass will be heard at 9 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 18, at St. Raymond's Church for Ernest Botello, a former longtime resident of Downey who died at his Cudahy home Oct. 13.

He was 82, a native Californian, a former machinist for Automatic Machines, and a member of St. Raymond's Church.

Friends may visit from 2 to 8 p.m. today (Friday, Oct. 17) at the Miller-Mies Mortuary Chapel, where a Rosary will be held at 7 p.m.

Survivors include his wife, Isabel; his sons, Ernest (Anita) Botello, David (Denise) Botello; a daughter, Bonnie Niemeier; brothers, Stanley and Raymond Botello; sisters Mildred Sausedo, Bernice Moon and Betty Hadley; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Father Steve Davoren will officiate.

Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City. Arrangements are by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.

Services Monday for educator Moses Chavez

LONG BEACH-Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at Saint Cyprian Catholic Church, 4832 Clark Ave., Long Beach, for Moses P. Chavez, a former longtime educator for the Downey Unified School District, who died Tuesday, Oct. 14.

He was a former principal at Downey High School. An award is given in his name by the school annually.

Downey mourns passing of Erny Walter Briggs

DOWNEY-Memorial services will be held Sunday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Downey for Erny Walter Briggs, the owner/proprietor of Briggs Realty and a realtor and appraiser for 40 years, who died in Downey Community Health Center Oct. 10.

Born in Bradford, Illinois, Oct. 17, 1914, he was 82, and lived in Downey since 1951.

He was a 2nd Lieutenant connected to the Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC) of the U.S. Army in World War II, attached to the Paratroopers. He was a member of the Downey Chamber of Commerce and the Downey Board of Realtors.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Briggs of Downey; a daughter, Jean Louise Peterson of Playa Del Rey; a grandson, Thomas Vincent Pickett; and a sister, Gertrude V. Kronsted of Galesburg, Illinois.

Graveside services were Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier. Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.

James Francis King mourned by many here

DOWNEY-Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the Hillside Church of Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier for James Francis King, a resident of Downey for 43 years and the business manager for Hollywood Plastic Company where he worked for 35 years, who died at his home Oct. 10.

He was born in Butte, Montana, Feb. 5, 1918 and was 79.

He was a veteran of the Air Force in World War II, and was attached to a B-17 Bomber Squadron.

Survivors include his wife, Corrine King of Downey; sons Gregory Allen King of Diamond Bar, William David King of Tustin; brothers Dominic of Pasadena and Edward of Bakersfield; sisters Marie Ellsworth of Deer Lodge, Montana, and Marian Cook of Missoula, Montana; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.
