LEIVASY -- Ray Jennings Amick, 75, died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998 at his home following a long illness.
Born Aug. 25, 1923, at Leivasy, he was the son of the late Robert Fulton and Elva McCurcheon Amick.
Mr. Amick was a lifetime resident of Leivasy, a member of New Prospect Baptist Church of Leivasy, and a retired coal miner and farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Hoke Amick of Leivasy; a daughter, Pamela Jean O'Dell of Leivasy; two sons, Fred R. Amick of Leivasy and James E. Amick of Nettie; three sisters, Marie Ball of Christiansburg, Va., Beulah Pratt of Summersville and Ruth Ann Ballard of Palm Bay, Fla.; three brothers, Robert L. Amick of Lenoir, N.C., Everett H. Amick of Leivasy, and William Homer Amick of Hurricane; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at New Prospect Baptist Church, Leivasy, with the Revs. John Barnhouse and Troy George officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.
Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Wallace and Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, and one hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Texie Baldwin, 91, of Odd, died 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at the home of her daughter, Doris Meador of Odd, following a long illness.
Born Jan. 6, 1907, at Odd, she was the daughter of the late "Bill" Cole and Alimenta Wood Cole.
Mrs. Baldwin was a homemaker and a member of the Good Hope Baptist Church at Tommy's Creek. She had been a resident of Odd most of her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Basil Baldwin; and two infant children.
Survivors include three sons, Harold L. Baldwin and his wife, Madge, of Levenworth, Kan., Basil L. Baldwin Jr. and his wife, Wanda, of Helen, and Kermit L. Baldwin and his wife, Phyllis, of Crab Orchard; two daughters, Betty White and her husband, James, of Princewick, and Doris L. Meador of Odd; two sisters, Fern Jones of Fort Mill, S.C., and Elsie Spradling of Moneta, Va.; 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with the Rev. Larry Penix officiating. Burial will follow in Bowling Cemetery, Spanishburg.

Zada Lucas Brooks, 88, died 7:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, in an Oak Hill hospital following a long illness.
Born Jan. 14, 1916, at Marshes, she was the daughter of the late Harrison Lucas and Clara Manning Lucas.
Mrs. Brooks was a homemaker and a member of Breckenridge Missionary Baptist Church at Bolt. She had been a Beckley resident since 1968, having lived in the Bolt area most of her life.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wint Brooks; a son, James Morris Brooks; a sister, Inez Griffith; and a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Shirey.
Survivors include a son, Vandell W. Brooks of Franklin; two daughters, Irene Renault of Vero Beach, Fla., and Maxine Brown and her husband, Worley, of Summersville, and Nancy Brooks Brown of Beckley; a daughter-in-law, Rosetta Brooks of Bolt; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 3 p.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with the Revs. Wayne Terry and Maurice Carpenter officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

RUPERT -- Macel Mae Daniels, 75, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at a Jacksonville, Fla., hospital following a sudden illness.
Born Oct. 25, 1923, at Clifftop, she was the daughter of the late Cecil Rupert and Eva Lillian King Gilkerson.
Mrs. Daniels was a homemaker and a member of Amwell Baptist Church, Rupert, where she also served as a ladies' aide.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Faye Letha Gilkerson Ballengee; and three brothers, Bernard Burnette Gilkerson, Harold Haven Gilkerson and Earl Jackson Gilkerson.
Survivors include her husband, Floyd Daniels; three sons, Roy Daniels of Virginia Beach, Va., Gary Daniels of Rupert and Denzil Daniels of Newark, Del.; a sister, Anna V. Yoakum of Rupert; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Amwell Baptist Church, Rupert, with the Rev. Robert Newman officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

COVINGTON, Va. -- Lessie Mae Alley Killen, 85, of 2133 Dressler Drive, died Dec. 4, 1998, at her home.
Born May 23, 1913, in Tazwell County, she was the daughter of the late James Alley and Minnie Davis Alley.
Mrs. Killen had been a resident of Meadow Bridge most of her life, moving to Covington in 1996. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Orvil A. Killen Sr., in 1980; 21 brothers and sisters and two grandchildren.
Survivors include eight children and their spouses, Barbara K. and W.T. Jones of Virginia Beach, Va., Louella K. and Bob Caudill of Louisville, Ky., John A. and Barbara W. Roy C. Long
HINTON -- Roy C. Long, 77, of 818 Summers St., died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at his home following an apparent heart attack.
Born Oct. 14, 1921, at Covington, Va., he was the son of the late Clarence E. and Effie M. Morgan Long.
Mr. Long was a retired chief train dispatcher for the C & O Railroad with 42 years of service. He was a member and elder of the First Christian Church of Hinton, where he was very involved in the activities of the church. He had been a resident of Hinton for the past 60 years. He was a member of the Hinton Masonic Lodge #62, Morse Telegraph Club Inc., Greenbrier County Historical Society, National Railway Historical Society, and The American Train Dispatchers Association. For the past 12 years, he wrote Railroad Recollections, a weekly column for the Hinton News that depicted life in and around railroad towns during their early history. He also wrote and published the Long Family History.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Bessie Oleta Cobb and Shirley Avenel Griffith.
Survivors include his wife, Willianna Hancock Long at home; two sons, Doug Long and Fred Long both of Hinton; two grandchildren, Victor Long and his wife, Amy, of Princeton and Trudy Long of Beckley; and five sisters, Edna Leola DeHart, Hazel Jane Tyree, Ina Mae Chruch, Excovene Myrtle Critzer and Dorothy Alrene Keifer.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton, with Pastor Gary Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens, Hinton.

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, Va. -- Opal Gay Simpson, 70, formerly of Kopperston, died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at her home following a long illness.
Born March 11, 1928, at Blair in Logan County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Farmer and Ida Graham Farmer.
Mrs. Simpson was a homemaker and had been a resident of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., for 20 years.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Wayne T. Simpson; a son, Roger Simpson and his wife, Glenda, of Pineville; a brother, Thomas Farmer Jr. and his wife, Rita, of New York; four sisters, Mildred Blankenship of Fairdale, Betty Jarrell and her husband, Ray, of Columbus, Ohio, Carol Reid and her husband, Charles, of Fayetteville, N.C., and Judy McComas of Detroit, Mich.; three grandchildren, Thomas Simpson and his wife, Crystal, of Clear Fork, Mark Simpson and his wife, Cindy, of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., and Kelli Karper and her husband, John, of Princeton; and two great-grandchildren, Bradley Simpson and Thomas Blake Simpson.

SUFFOLK, Va. -- Thelma Forren Sproles, 76, formerly of Meadow Bridge, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at a Suffolk, Va. care center following a long illness.
Born March 6, 1922, at Meadow Bridge, she was the daughter of the late Lonnie Forren.
Mrs. Sproles was a member of Meadow Bridge United Methodist Church, Meadow Bridge, and a former bookkeeper for Boley Chevrolet of Rainelle and Home Appliance Repair of Smithville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Prentiss Edward Sproles, June 19, 1967; and a sister, Betty.
Survivors include two daughters, Sylvia Martin of Windfor and Avis Pierce of Arizona; a son, Lonnie Sproles of Chesapeake; five sisters, Mae Young of Pomeroy, Mildred Bowyer of Danese, Marie Forren of Windfor, Gaye Pope of Illinois and Leta Hann of Chapel Hill, S.C.; five brothers, Fred Forren of Morgantown, Clinton Forren of Yorktown, Va., Vearl Forren of the Philippines, Charles Forren of Illinois and Joe Forren of New York; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

ROCKWOOD, Tenn. -- Riley O. Summers, 74, of Eblen Gap Road, died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, in an Oak Ridge, Tenn. medical center.
He was the son of the late Orton T. and Bertie Carroll Summers.
Mr. Summers was a member of the Pine Orchard Baptist Church, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a retired coal truck driver with Valley Services, W.Va., with 36 years of service, and a lifelong member with UMWA, working in the mines in Lynch, Kentucky and Oceana.
He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Howard Summers; an infant daughter, Laura Ann Summers; brothers, George, Walter, Clarence Summers; and sisters, Dorothy Summers, Mildred Stonecipher and Caval Wigington.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Rita Hawkins Summers of Rockwood; three daughters, Linda Green of Oceana, Rose Tilley and her husband, Gerald, of Grantsville, and Betty Summers of Kingston; three sons, Thomas Summers of Rockwood, Billy Summers and his wife, Francis of Jesse and Jeremy Summers and his wife, Jennifer, of Rockwood; three sisters, Louise Felix of Milford, Ohio, Helen Blanton and her husband, Martin of Rockwood, and Vivian Roles and her husband, James A., of Spring City; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

POINT PLEASANT - Robert Lee Armstrong Sr., 69, formerly of Fayetteville, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, in a Cleveland hospital following a long illness.
Born Jan. 14, 1930, at Fayetteville, he was the son of the late Rodney R. Armstrong, who died July 16, 1976, and Myrtle Ruth Garten Armstrong, who died March 19, 1994.
Mr. Armstrong was a retired crane operator with Ravenswood Aluminum Corp., a member of Bellemcad United Methodist Church and the United Steel Workers union. He was a graduate of Fayetteville High School and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Arverill Ray Armstrong.
Survivors include his wife, Merle Y. Hall Armstrong; two sons, Robert Lee "Chip" Armstrong Jr. of New Orleans and John Daniel Armstrong of St. Albans; a daughter, Laura Lane Cullen of Letart; two brothers, Rodney Garton Armstrong of Akron, Ohio, and James Randolph Armstrong of Jackson, Ohio; a sister, Ruth Ann Gavin of Fort Myers, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

Mrs. Britton was a homemaker.

QUINWOOD - Thelma Ann Carroll, 86, died Monday, April 26, 1999, in a Fairlea hospital following a long illness.
Born Aug. 24, 1912, at Ronceverte, she was the daughter of the late Luther Harvey and Mabel Barrett Rutherford.
Mrs. Carroll was a homemaker and a member of Quinwood Baptist Church and Quinwood Rebekah Lodge No. 36.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter "Toots" Carroll, on Jan. 11, 1992; two brothers, Earl Rutherford and C.W. Rutherford; and a sister, Lorene Carroll.
Survivors include a daughter, Helen Ruth Dudley of Covington, Va.; three sons, Robert E. Carroll and his wife, Shirley, of Hines, Earl Carroll and his wife, Lana, of Covington and Charles Carroll and his wife, Evelyn, of Quinwood; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Donald W. Hickok
Donald W. Hickok, 39, of 402 Parkway St., Beckley, died Monday, April 26, 1999, near Gilbert as the result of a car accident.
Born Aug. 8, 1959, in Wise, Va., he was the son of Gladys Ray Hickok of Wise and the late Harold L. Hickok Sr.
Mr. Hickok was senior marketing representative with Federated Insurance. He was a 1977 graduate of Mullens High School, a 1981 graduate of Concord College, where he was a member of the football team, and a member of Memorial Baptist Church, where he was involved in Promise Keepers, the drama ministry and served as an usher.
He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Raymond Sturgeon.
Other survivors include his wife of 16 years, Paula Sturgeon Hickok; a son, Christopher Hickok at home; a daughter, Erin Michelle Hickok at home; two brothers, Harold L. Hickok Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Michael Hickok and his wife, Linda, of Chicago; a sister, Brenda Jo Ribbons and her husband, Thon, of Baja, Calif.; and a brother-in-law, Rod Sturgeon and his wife, Cheryl, of Houston.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Cobert Luther Lively, 55, formerly of Smithers, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, in a Maryland medical center following an apparent heart attack.
Born Sept. 11, 1943, at Smithers, he was a graduate of Rainelle High School.
Mr. Lively was a 26-year resident of Annapolis, formerly of Wheaton, Md. At the time of his death, he was a security analyst for T. Rowe Price & Associates for the last three years. Prior to that he worked for Riggs Bank for 18 years, and he also worked 12 years for Hechingers.
He was an avid golfer and boater and enjoyed deer hunting and computers.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dennis and Harold Lively; and a sister, Shirley Lively.
Survivors include his mother, Mildred Lively of Charmco; his wife, Gaye Lively, whom he married in 1964; a son, Ralph Lively of Annapolis; a daughter, Melissa Lively of Arnold, Md.; four brothers, Robert and Paul Lively, both of Prince George, Va., Zach Lively of Columbus, Ohio, and Roy Lively of Quinwood; two sisters, Geraldine Buckland of Quinwood and Pam Velasquez of Prince George; and three grandchildren.

BALLARD - Samuel Aaron Pitzer, 19, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, in a Roanoke, Va., hospital.
Born Nov. 19, 1979, at Princeton, he was the son of LeRoy and Connie Shultz Pitzer of Ballard.
He was employed with Jones Construction Co. in Blacksburg, Va., as a carpenter.
He was a member of Orchard Christian Center and the Ballard Volunteer Fire Department.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Christopher James Pitzer.
