Julia M. Billing
Julia M. Billing, 72, of Sidney, OH, formerly of Berkeley Springs, died Saturday, September 27, 1997 at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney.
She was born May 22, 1925 in Berkeley Springs, a daughter of Foster Johnson and Bertha Hovermale Johnson.
She was a member of the Sidney First Church of the Nazarene.
She was retired after 26 years as a customer service representative of Amos Press, Inc.
She was a member of the Wilson Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and a volunteer for FISH.
Surviving are her husband of 52 years, whom she married August 11, 1945, Homer J. Billing, at home; two sons, John Wayne Billing, Piqua, OH and Brent Alan Billing, Georgetown, KY; two daughters, Kathy Reedy, Vandalla, OH and JoAnn Woods, Sidney; one brother, Ralph Johnson, Alexandria, VA; one sister, Ruth Clark, Berkeley Springs; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by one sister.
Services were held Wednesday, October 1 at the Sidney First Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Michael McClurg officiating.
Interment was in the Cedar Point Cemetery in Pasco, OH.

William A. George
William A. "Shorty" George, 74, Hedgesville, died Saturday, October 18, 1997, at his home.
He was the son of the late Edward F. George and Sarah Cook George.
He was a retired orchard worker.
Surviving are three sons, William R. George, Richard D. George and Larry W. George, all of Hedgesville; one daughter, Debra M. Oldham of Hedgesville, six brothers, Casper George and Luther George, both of Martinsburg, Eston George of Romney, Arthur George of Arlington, TX, Carl George of Golden, CO, and Harry George of Hedgesville; two sisters, Mattie Starliper of Cherry Run, and Luella Jordan of Marlowe, and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Fahnestock George; one granddaughter; and two brothers, Evers George and Lester George.
Services were at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 21, at the Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with Pastor Jack Rudy officiating.
Interment was in Pleasant View Memory Gardens. 

Mary M. Lingg
Mary Madeline "Nanny" Lingg, 88, Paw Paw, died Wednesday, October 15, 1997, in the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA.
She was born on October 1, 1909, the daughter of the late Charles Archibald and Ida May Trigger Miller.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church in Berkeley Springs.
Her husband, John M. Lingg, whom she married on April 3, 1940, preceded her in death on June 24, 1970.
Surviving are a daughter, Anne Marie Spain, Franklin; one son, John Charles Lingg, Paw Paw; one granddaughter and two great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, October 20, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church with Father Dennis Kleinmann officiating. A Rosary service was held October 19 at 7 p.m.
Interment was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, MD.
Memorial contributions may be made in the form of Masses to Sacred Heart Church. 
 
William G. Collum
William Garfield Collum, 67, of Hancock, MD died on Tuesday, October 14, 1997 at his home.
Born November 10, 1929 in Webster County, WV, he was the son of the late Carl William and Myrtle Irene Davisson Collum.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1946-1962 and was a member of Webster B. Harrison American Legion Post #26, Hancock, MD. In the mid 1960's, following his military career, Mr. Collum founded and operated Montgomery Motors, Inc. in Gaithersburg, MD. The business expanded to include recreational vehicles, and from the early 1970's until his death, he actively served as President of Triangle Outdoor World, Frederick, MD.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Trudy Scheiner Collum, at home; two sisters, Susan C. Crumett, Burke, VA; Wanda C. Lewark, Fairfax VA; two nephews and three nieces. 
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Carl Edward Collum.
Services and burial in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Salem, WV will be private.

Francis M. Steele
Frances Marie Nawrocki Steele, 68, died Wednesday, October 8, 1997 in Chesapeake Healthcare Center, Chesapeake, VA.
She was born in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of the late Paul Nawrocki and Mary Kramer Nawrocki.
She attended St. Matthews Catholic Church and was a homemaker.
She is survived by three daughters, Christina Fling, Hancock, MD, and Lynn Pappas and Jean Steele, both of Chesapeake; three sons, Mark Steele and Gregory Steele, both of Chesapeake, and Matthew Steele, Greenville, NC; two sisters, Jean Ciccarelli, Philadelphia, PA and Helen Kenny, Magnolia, NJ; one stepbrother, Walter Rutecky, Philadelphia; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Rutecky. 
A memorial service was conducted on Monday, October 13, at 10 a.m. in St. Matthews Catholic Church, Virginia Beach with Father Drake officiating.
The Cremation Society of Virginia, Tidewater Office, handled arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. 

Winifred T. Layton
Winifred Thelma Layton, 82, of Catonsville, MD died Wednesday, October 15, 1997, at her home.
Born July 14, 1915 in Morgan County, she was the daughter of the late Wilson Luther and Zula Elizabeth Wisner Spring. 
She was a member of Emanuel United Methodist Church, Catonsville, MD and Calvary United Methodist Church, Great Cacapon.
She attended Great Cacapon Grade and Middle Schools. She was a 1933 graduate of Paw Paw High School. She earned her bachelor's degree in education from West Virginia Wesleyan, Buckhannan, did post graduate work at Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, and earned her master's degree in education from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA. She was a teacher with Morgan County Public Schools from 1937-1957. She then taught with Baltimore County, MD Public Schools until her retirement in 1977. She was a member of the Baltimore County, MD Retired Teachers Association, the Women's Club of Catonsville, MD, the Catonsville Travel Club and Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.
Surviving are three sisters, Geraldine Cooke, Gaithersburg, MD; Ada McNabb, Peoria, IL; and Wanda Mae Pease, Westminster, MD; and numerous nieces and nephews. 
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne A. Layton, in 1974, and one brother, Luther Spring.
Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, October 18, at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, with Rev. Roger E. Burtner officiating. Interment was in Mt. Nebo Cemetery, Great Cacapon.

Lawrence E. Prevost
Lawrence "Bud" Everitt Prevost, 74, Orem, UT, died Monday, October 13, 1997 at the Crestview Care Center in Provo.
He was born February 2, 1923, in Hancock, to Lawrence C. and Christianna Everitt Prevost.
He married Lorna Beth Ahlstrom August 5, 1943 in Salt Lake City.
He was a member of the LDS Church. He worked for Geneva Steel, Grow Investment, Utah Savings & Loan, and Daw Incorporated.
He liked fishing, hunting, and camping. He bowled for many years.
He served in the Army Air Force during World War II.
Survivors include his wife of Orem; two daughters, Beverly Eldredge, Portland, OR, Linda Tripp, Orem; two sons, Lawrence Prevost of Orem, and Keith Prevost, South Jordan, ten grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; two brothers, Howard E. Prevost, Berkeley Springs, and James A. Prevost of Dover, DE; one sister, Catherine Long, Hagerstown, MD.
He was preceded in death by a brother Wilbur Prevost. 
Funeral services were held Thursday, October 16, at 11 a.m. at the Cherry Hill 4th Ward Chapel, 1650 South 200 East in Orem.
Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State St., in Orem was in charge of arrangements.
Interment was in the Eastlawn Memorial Hills Cemetery.

LaVerne Carpenter
LaVerne Carpenter, 66, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, October 23, 1997 at City Hospital, Martinsburg. 
She was the daughter of the late Roy Pat Kelley and Anna Perry Kelley.
She was employed for 40 years as a sales person for Stanley Home Products.
She was the cook for 20 years at the American Legion Post 60.
She is survived by three sons, Richard B. Carpenter, Jr., James D. Carpenter Sr. and Edwin D. Carpenter, all of Berkeley Springs; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 26 at the Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer Street, Berkeley Springs, with the Rev. Jack and Shirley Hiles officiating. 
Interment was in the Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs. 

Everett A. Dingman
Everett A. Dingman, 81, Berkeley Springs, died Wednesday, October 22, 1997 at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs.
Born October 21, 1916 in Peru, IN, he was the son of the late Charles A. and Mary Simpson Dingman.
He was a member of Berkeley Baptist Church, Berkeley Springs.
He was a retired warehouseman from the Hecht Company in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.
Surviving are one adopted son, Charles Dingman, Berkeley Springs; one adopted daughter, Cindy Morris, Baltimore, MD; four grandchildren and one great grandson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alice P. Haddaway Dingman, on September 5, 1992. 
Graveside services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, at Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery, Morgan County, with the Rev. William T. Ennis, Sr. officiating.

Josephine L. Traver
Josephine Louise Traver, 83, of Clear Spring, MD, died Thursday, October 23, 1997, at her home.
Born June 12, 1914, in Williamsport, MD, she was the daughter of the late George "Hooper" and Minnie Zimmerman Wolfe.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin "Nip" Traver, in 1972.
She was a graduate of Towson Normal School, Towson, MD. 
She was owner and operator of Wolfe's on the Square until her retirement in 1975. Prior to that she taught at Winter Street Elementary School, Hagerstown, MD.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Williamsport. 
She was a member of AARP.
She is survived by three daughters, Ginny Slick, Clear Spring, Sally Drury, Great Cacapon and Lolly Traver, Williamsport; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, October 28, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 37 W. Potomac Street, Williamsport. The Rev. W. Gregory Martin and Marty Roberson, vicar, officiated. Burial was at the convenience of the family in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

J. Merle Carbaugh
J. Merle Carbaugh, 81, of Mercersburg, PA died Saturday, October 25, 1997, at University of Maryland Medical System in Baltimore.
Born February 23, 1916, in Fulton County, PA, he was the son of the late Thomas H. and Nellie Crider Carbaugh.
He was employed at the former Lowengart Co. in Mercersburg from 1950 until his retirement in 1981. During his career in Lowengart and prior to his death, he operated a farm at the Shimpstown Road address.
He was a former member of Pine Grove Cemetery Board.
For the past seven years, he provided equipment for the working displays of Two Top Ruritan Club's Gas and Steam Engine Show. He was recognized by the club for his help. 
He was of the Protestant faith.
He liked hunting.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl Atherton Carbaugh, whom he married October 18, 1938; one daughter, Faith E. Carbaugh of Mercersburg; three sons, John T. Carbaugh of Mercersburg, Amos J. Carbaugh of Greencastle, PA, and David H. Carbaugh of McConnellsburg, PA; three brothers, T. Reid Carbaugh, Linn Carbaugh and Roy Carbaugh, all of Mercersburg; 11 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four step-great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, one sister, and one great-grandchild.
Services will be today, Wednesday, October 29, at 2 p.m. at Maple Grove Church of God, Mercersburg, PA. The Rev. Norman C. Hege, the Rev. Sterling C. Keeney and the Rev. Robert E. Timmons will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Mercersburg.
A viewing was held at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg, Tuesday, October 28, and at the church one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Juanita M. Mowery
Juanita Marie Mowery, 67, Berkeley Springs, died on Tuesday, October 28, 1997 at Avalon Manor Nursing Home in Hagerstown, MD.
Born October 13, 1930 in New Hope, she was the daughter of the late Romanus and Ruth Michael.
She was a member of Wesleyan Chapel, Berkeley Springs. 
She attended the New Hope School.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving are one daughter, Esther Lea Copeland Hileman, Martinsburg; one stepson, Kenneth Copeland, Berkeley Springs; one brother, Homer Michael; one grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, George R. Copeland on April 22, 1974; her second husband, Harry Wesley Mowery on May 5, 1997; one stepson, Dale Copeland and one sister, Thelma Michael.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 30, at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, with the Rev. William C. Swope and Pastor Robert Capplinger officiating. Burial will be in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today, Wednesday, October 29, at the funeral home. The funeral home will be open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today.

Bonnie D. Sager
Bonnie Darlene Sager, 50, of Paw Paw, died Saturday, November 1, 1997 at her home.
She was the daughter of Elsie Bowen Fultz Longo, Romney and the late Ernest Fultz.
She was a homemaker.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Delmer Sager, at home; one daughter, Tammy Sager, Paw Paw; one son, Edward Sager, Paw Paw; three sisters, Shirley Cowgill and Maveriva Betson, both of Paw Paw, and Sylvia Lease, Romney.
She was preceded in death by one brother.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 4 at the McKee Funeral Home Chapel in Augusta with the Rev. Herman Goede officiating.
Interment was in Island Hill Cemetery, Paw Paw.
 
Kathryn M. Smith
Kathryn Mary Smith, 77, of Winchester, VA, formerly of Alexandria, VA, died on Sunday, November 2, 1997 at Valley View Nursing Home, Berkeley Springs.
Born November 7, 1919 in Queens, NY, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Bennett Raynor.
She was of the Catholic faith.
She was a member of AARP.
She retired in the early 1980s after 34 years of service with the U.S. Government, FMCS, Washington, DC. She had been a homemaker in recent years.
Surviving are one daughter, Patricia Ann Smith Haines, Hedgesville; and four nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters.
Services and interment are private.

Michael Ihre
Michael Ihre, 91, of Berkeley Springs, died Sunday, November 2, 1997, at Winchester Manor Adult Care Center of Winchester, VA.
He was the son of the late John Ihre and Marie Konrad Ihre.
He was a member of the Berkeley Springs Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.
He was formerly employed as a proof reader for the United States Government Printing Office in Washington, DC.
Surviving are one son, Donald M. Ihre, Berkeley Springs; three sisters, Emma Rannings, Charlottes-ville, VA, Essie Ryman, Silver Spring, MD and Martha Lamb, Fort Lauderdale, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Violet Hammer Ihre, in 1994; and two sisters, Mary Groman and Teresa Hauser.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, November 6, at the Cedar Hill Cemetery of Suitland, MD, with Noah Wilkerson officiating.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. today, Wednesday, November 5, at the Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 South Mercer Street, Berkeley Springs.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, November 8, at Kingdom Hall, Jehovah Witness Church, Berkeley Springs.

Beulah J. Cassner
Beulah J. Cassner, 59, of Hagerstown, MD, died Friday, November 7, 1997 at Washington County Hospital.
Born November 5, 1938, in Hancock, she was the daughter of the late William Howard and Nellie May Eshelman Keefer. 
She attended Evangel Baptist Church and the BYKOTA group. 
She also was a member of Blue Denim Boot Kickers and Berkeley Moose Auxiliary Chapter 1311 in Berkeley Springs, WV.
She is survived by her husband, Lewis H. Cassner, whom she married June 30, 1956; three daughters, Debbie A. Baker and Norma J. Harne, both of Hagerstown, and Diane C. Faith, Clear Spring; two sons, Lewis W. Cassner and David L. Cassner, both of Hagerstown; five sisters, Elsie Rhodes, Fort Loudon, PA, Myrtle Divelbliss, Hancock, Ruth Maconaughey, Ranson, WV, Edna Tritle, Needmore, PA, and Mary Miley, Hagerstown; one brother, John Keefer, Shippensburg, PA; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by one son, Eddie L. Cassner; and three brothers, Cecil Keefer, Lester Keefer and William Keefer.
Services were held Tuesday, November 11 at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Ernest W. Thompson officiated. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Drew E. Nelson
Drew Ella Nelson, 75, of Ellicott City, MD, died Wednesday, November 5, 1997 at Howard County Hospital.
Born August 28, 1922 in Brunswick, MD, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Franklin Harmison and Hazel Virginia Collier Harmison.
She was a member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She lived many years in Berkeley Springs, and was a graduate of Berkeley Springs High School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard B. Nelson; one son, Kevin Morgan Nelson; and one brother, Frank Harmison.
She is survived by four sons, Richard C. Nelson and Bryant D. Nelson, both of Carroll County, MD, Brad W. Nelson and Gregory S. Nelson, both of Howard County, MD; two daughters, Dianne D. Nelson of Baltimore County, MD and Karen D. Keim of Howard County, MD; three brothers, Jack Harmison, Bill Harmison and Carlton Harmison, all of West Virginia; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. 
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, November 8 at Witzke Funeral Home, Ellicott City. 
 
Raymond A. Michael
Raymond Allen Michael, 80, of Hedgesville, WV, died Saturday, November 8, 1997 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV.
Born October 4, 1917 in Morgan County, WV, he was the son of the late Calvin Benton and Grace May Widmyer Michael. 
He was a member of the Johnsontown Bible Church, Hedgesville.
He attended the Mt. Cecil School, Berkeley Springs.
Having served as Private First Class in the U.S. Army from March 20, 1942 until November 27, 1945, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon.
He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a lifetime member and first Post Quartermaster of Risinger-Stotler V.F.W. Post #4019, Berkeley Springs. He had been a member of Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post #60, Berkeley Springs.
In his early years he worked with the Keefer Farm, Chambersburg, PA and with Western Union Telephone and Telegraph.
He was a volunteer with the Morgan County Rescue Service, Berkeley Springs.
He retired in March, 1973, after 30 years of service as a dietitian supervisor and cook with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg. He worked as a custodian at the Berkeley Springs Post Office during the late 1970s.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Nettie Virginia Householder Michael, at home; one son, Richard Eugene "Turkey" Michael, Hedgesville; two sisters, Evelyn Carbaugh, Clear Spring, MD and Helen Johnson, Martinsburg; one brother, Ralph E. Michael, Hedgesville; one niece; three nephews; and several great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11 at the Johnsontown Bible Church, Hedgesville, with Pastor Jack Rudy officiating. Interment with military graveside honors provided by the Tri-State Honor Guard will be in Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.
