Mrs. R. Irene Porter, 79, of Mountain Lake Park, Md., died March 14,
at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland, Md.
Born Aug. 2, 1922, in Kline, she was the daughter of the late William
P. and Lura H. (Mitchell) Greenawalt. She was also preceded in death by
her first husband, Dale C. Byrd.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were March 17, with interment was in the Garrett County
Memorial Gardens, Oakland. (3/26)
Lahman
Arnold William Lahman, 83, of Petersburg, died March 17, at the Grant
County Nursing Home, where he resided the past month.
Born March 30, 1918, in Lahmansville, he was the son of the late Jacob
Stanley and Fannie Elizabeth (Patch) Lahman. He was also preceded in death
by his wife, Eva (Keplinger) Lahman, Dec. 31, 1990.
He is survived by two sons, Keith Lahman and Wayne Lahman, both of
Petersburg; three daughters, Elaine VanMeter, Sharon Feaster and Nancy
Carr, all of Petersburg; one sister, Ada McDonald of Maysville; 13 grandchildren
and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were March 20, at the Schaeffer Funeral Home chapel,
Petersburg, with interment in the Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville.
Military graveside services were performed by the combined veteran organizations

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (Plauger) VanMeter, 88, of Petersburg, W.Va., died
March 18, at the Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg, where she had resided
since Aug. 8, 2000.
Born Oct. 26, 1913, in Petersburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the
late James Grover Plauger and Cynthia (Graham) Plauger. She was also preceded
in death by her husband, Clarence W. VanMeter, Aug. 27, 1999.
She is survived by one daughter, Cynthia "Vickie" Stump and husband,
David, of Petersburg, W.Va.; three granddaughters, Toni Hedrick and husband,
Tom, of Petersburg, W.Va., Amanda Fleming and husband, Allen of Petersburg,
W.Va. and Paula Gerstell and husband, C.T., of Statesville, N.C.; one great-granddaughter,
Traci Hedrick; one stepgreat-grandson, T.J. Hedrick; two nephews, George
Plauger of Petersburg, W.Va. and Harry R. Plauger of New Freedom, Pa.,
and one niece, Alice Hawse of Wardensville, W.Va.

Mrs. Amy C. Hochard, 84, of Cumberland, Md., died March 20, in Cumberland.
Born April 20, 1917, in Petersburg, she was the daughter of the late
Walter and Lizzie Keplinger. She was also preceded in death by her husband,
Harry Albert Hochard.
She is survived by three sons, Larry S. Hochard of Bedford, Pa., Harry
E. Hochard of Ridgeley and Howard L. Hochard of Woodstock, Va.; two sisters,
Bessie Bible of Petersburg and Leona Newell of Newark, Ohio; eight grandchildren,
Michael Hochard, Stacey Hochard, Kimberly Hochard, Missy Hochard, Jonathan
Hochard, Christopher Hochard, Jordan Hochard and Kayla Hochard and one
great-granddaughter, Payton McKenzie Hochard.

Lloyd David Clark, 86, of Petersburg, died March 21, at Grant Memorial
Hospital, Petersburg. He had been a resident of the Grant County Nursing
Home for the past year.
Born Oct. 20, 1915, in Row, Okla., he was the son of the late William
J. and Della L. (Riley) Clark.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary (Moomau) Clark; one daughter,
Phyllis A. Harman of Woodstock, Va. and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were March 24, at the Petersburg Presbyterian Church,
with interment in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg.

Mrs. Pearl Bergdoll Parsons, 95, of Linville, Va., and formerly of
Dorcas, died March 21, at the residence of her daughter, Phyllis Reedy.
She had lived with her daughter for the last 10 years.
Born Jan. 7, 1907, in Maysville, she was the daughter of the late Joe
and Zionie (Brian) Reed. She was also preceded in death by her first husband,
Wilbur Bergdoll; and her second husband, Colbus Parsons.
She is survived by five daughters, Wilda Ford and Ruth Good, both of
Broadway, Va., Lucilla Ridgeley of Cumberland, Md., Evelyn Hosaflook of
Timberville and Phyllis Reedy of Linville; one brother, John Reed of Kingswood;
19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were March 23, at the Grandle Funeral Home chapel,

Mrs. Lena J. Hawk, 82, of Scherr, died March 22, at the Heartland of
Keyser Nursing Home.
Born June 24, 1919, at Antioch, she was the daughter of the late James
and Della (Rotruck) Billmyre. She was also preceded in death by her husband,
Loren H. "Bake" Hawk, Dec. 23, 1993.
She is survived by one son, James B. "Sonny" Hawk of New Creek; one
granddaughter, D'Andra Hawk; two great-grandchildren; two step-grandsons,
Larry Kidwell Jr. and Bobby Kidwell; two step great-granddaughters and
several nieces and nephews.

Eugene Franklin Parker, 74, of Moorefield, died March 22, at his residence.
Born Oct. 19, 1927, in Needmore, he was the son of the late Harry P.
and Raye (Miller) Parker.

Karen Sue (Parker) Propst of Elkton, Va. and Sharon Kay Hornbaker of Hancock,
Md.; one son, Eugene Franklin Parker II of Fairmont; one brother, Wallace
Parker of Petersburg and two grandchildren.

chapel, Moorefield, with interment in the Asbury Church Cemetery in Beans

John Henry VanMeter, 63, of Upper Tract, died March 24, at his home.
Born Dec. 25, 1938, at Onego, he was the son of Lossie VanMeter of
Upper Tract and the late Joy (Huffman) VanMeter.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra (Poole) VanMeter, whom he married
Sept. 2, 1979; seven daughters, Pamela Joy Corneso and Tonya Cozart, both
of Akron, Ohio, Tamara Sipple, Teresa Penny VanMeter and Lisa Singer, all
of Norton, Ohio, Jackie Arbogast of Arbovale and Rachael VanMeter of Upper
Tract; one son, Ronald Thompson of Petersburg; two sisters, Bonnie Knight
of Akron and Joann Street of Massillon, Ohio; three brothers, Jim VanMeter
of Akron, Garry VanMeter of Lewisville, Ohio and Warren VanMeter of Franklin;
10 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Fla., died March 10, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
Born June 6, 1943, in West Chester County, Pa., he was the son of the

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Sherry Lee (Patch) Cain, at
home and formerly of Petersburg; two sons, Mark William Cain of Radcliff,
Ky., and Dylan Thomas Cain of Berkeley Springs; two daughters, Kimberly
Ane Gomez of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Ashley Marie Cain of Berkeley
Springs; two sisters, Joanne Fuller and Katherine Cain, both of Norfolk,
Va.; two brothers, John Cain of Norfolk and Thomas Cain of Daytona Beach;
eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Salem Kimble and Minnie (Alt) Kimble. She was also preceded in death by

Loretta Mae Burgess, Jan. 25, 1986.
He is survived by two sons, C. Dale Burgess Sr. of Flintstone and Roy
Wayne Boggs of Little Orleans, Md.; one daughter, Mary Louise Johnson of
Dayton, Md.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Willie Edward Didawick, 80, of Mount Storm, died March 15, at the home
of his daughter, Bonnie Jones of Kearneysville.
Born Oct. 31, 1921, in Mount Storm, he was the son of the late Bud

wife, Viola Lee (Lewis) Didawick, June 30, 1989.
Besides his one daughter, he is survived by his second wife, Patricia
Ann (Jackson) Didawick; four daughters, Rosemary Didawick of Fairmont and
Dorothy Lambka, Donna Didawick and Charlotte Hartman, all of Mount Storm;
four sons, William Keplinger of Fairmont, David Keplinger and Virgil Didawick,

E. and Claudia (Smith) Harman. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Forest Payton Schaeffer.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

in Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg.

Dr. Carmen Lynn Cleaver-Work, 44, of Charleston, S.C. and formerly
of Petersburg, died Feb. 24, at her home.
Born March 11, 1957 in Petersburg, she was the daughter of Elvin Cleaver
of Petersburg and Janet (Mongold) Nelson of Bloomington, Md. She was preceded
in death by one brother, Elvin R. Cleaver Jr.
Besides her parents, she is survived by her husband, Patrick Lovell

Memorial services were March 1, at the Maysville Bible Brethren Church,
with the Rev. Steffen Carr officiating.
Another memorial service will be conducted Saturday, March 9, at 11
a.m. at the Main Street United Methodist Church in Petersburg with the
Rev. Ann Harrison officiating.

Cosner
Mrs. Flora Ellen (Kitzmiller) Cosner, 88, of Mt. Storm, died Feb. 27,
at the Hampshire Center, Romney, where she had resided since April 6, 2000.
Born April 25, 1913 in Mt. Storm, she was the daughter of the late
Walter Filmore Kitzmiller and Prudence Etalka (Aronhalt) Kitzmiller.
She married Amos O. Cosner, Aug. 28, 1928 and he preceded her in death
Dec. 19, 1994.
She is survived by one daughter, Frances Alt and husband, Delmar of
Petersburg; one granddaughter, Tammy Pehowski of Winchester, Va,; three
great-grandchildren, E.J., Amanda and Desert; two sisters, Corene Shepard
and Kathleen Rinker and husband, Luther, all of Mt. Storm; sister-in-law,
Mildred Cosner of Cumberland, Md.; and brother-in-law, Ray Cosner of the
Hampshire Center, Romney.
Funeral services were March 2, at the Locust Grove Church of the Brethren,
with interment in the Idleman Cemetery, Scherr.
Memorials may be made to the Locust Grove Church of the Brethren building
fund or Petersburg Memorial Church of the Brethren.

Wilson
Samuel George Wilson, 70, of Petersburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, at
Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.
Born June 13, 1931, in Fishersville, Va., he was the son of the late
Jesse Allen and Myrtle Elizabeth (Booth) Wilson. He was also preceded in
death by his first wife, Glady Stump, Jan. 23, 1990. They were married
July 27, 1951.
He is survived by his second wife, Lee Hartman, whom he married Jan.
9, 2001; one daughter, Nancy Hill of Moorefield; one son, Frank Wilson,
Frostburg, Md; three stepsons, Joey Hartman, Jeffrey Hartman and Denny
Hartman, all of Petersburg; one sister, Linda Carpenter, Richmond, Va.;
two brothers, Charles Wilson and Jack Wilson, both of Farmville, Va.; six
grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were March 3, at the Basagic Funeral Home chapel,
Petersburg, with interment in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg. Military
graveside services were conducted by the combined veterans organizations

Murphy
Frazer William Murphy, 78, of Riverton, died Thursday, Feb. 28, at
his residence.
Born May 22, 1923, in Cherry Grove, he was the son of the late Isaac
Earl and Sylvia Virginia (Bennett) Murphy.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Judy Murphy; two daughters, Juanita
Goldizen of Maysville and Lenora Mallow of Upper Tract; one son, Dale Murphy
of Franklin; two sisters, Lora Smith and Helen Johnson, both of Baltimore;
one brother, Herman Murphy of Cherry Grove; eight grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were March 3, at the Circleville Presbyterian Church
with interment in the North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton. Military
graveside services were conducted by VFW Post 6862.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Basagic Funeral Home,

Mrs. Nellie Rosena Layton, 88, of Petersburg, died Feb. 18, at Grant
Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.
Born April 21, 1913, at Landes, she was the daughter of the late Wade
Hamilton Kesner and Anna Florence (Whetzel) Kesner. She was also preceded
in death by her husband, George Emory Layton, March 29, 1990.
He is survived by two sons, Paul J. Layton of Goldsboro, N.C., and
Emory J. Layton of Springfield, Va.; one daughter, Georgia L. Mahmoud of
Alexandria, Va.; one brother, Raymond Kesner of Dorcas; two stepsons, Vernon
Layton of Petersburg and Stanley Layton of Springfield; two stepdaughters,
Burrell Hiser of Baltimore and Eleanor Hinkle of Petersburg; 15 grandchildren
and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Feb. 20, at the Schaeffer Funeral Home chapel,

Robert Earl "Bob" Rhodes, 62, of Seneca Rocks, died Feb. 18, at the
Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg, where he had resided since May 15,
1995.
Born Sept. 3, 1939, in Glady, he was the son of the late McClellan
Rhodes and Della (Baker) Rhodes.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Rella (Cooper) Rhodes; one
son, Richard W. Rhodes of Seneca Rocks; one daughter, Rita A. Rhodes of
Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one sister, Della Mae Cork of Stuarts Draft, Va.; two
brothers, Roger Rhodes and Roy Rhodes, both of Glady; two grandsons, Corey
Rhodes and Tyler Rhodes; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Feb. 21, at the Schaeffer Funeral Home chapel,
Petersburg, with interment at the Cooper family Cemetery, Seneca Rocks.

Hepner Sr.
Curtis Leroy Hepner Sr., 92, of Moorefield, died Feb. 19, at Grant
Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.
Born April 26, 1909, in Mount Jackson, Va., he was the son of the late
John W. and Pearl (Craig) Hepner.
He is survived by his wife, Rea (Cleaver) Hepner; three daughters,
Judith Judy and husband, Gerald, of Petersburg, Wilda Hogbin and husband,
Carl Hogbin II, of Petersburg and Greta Lehman and husband, Lee, of Moorefield.;
two sons, Curtis "Buck" Hepner Jr. of Enfield, Conn. and John "Mike" Hepner
and wife, Hilda, of Hampton, Va.; one sister, Emma Jean Simmons of Moorefield;
15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Feb. 22, at the Elmore-Chambers Funeral Home,

Edward Kuykendall, 84, of Moorefield, died Feb. 22, at Winchester Medical
Center, Winchester, Va.
Born in 1917, in Hardy County, he was the son of the late Edward and
Nannie (Mongold) Kuykendall.
He is survived by one brother, Coy Kuykendall of Upper Tract and one
half sister, Beulah Fitzwater of Petersburg.
Funeral services were Feb. 25, at the Elmore-Chambers Funeral Home
chapel, Moorefield, with interment in the Olivet Cemetery, Moorefield.

Lucila Estrada, 63, of El Paso, Texas, died Saturday, Feb. 23, at her
home.
Born Dec. 20, 1938, in El Paso, she was the daughter of the late Felix
Moreno Sr. and Manuela (Silva) Moreno.
She is survived by her husband, Larry Estrada; one daughter, Corina
(Estrada) Sotomayor of El Paso; three sisters, twin sister Aurora Bosley
of Petersburg and Lori Roldan and Monica Ceballos, both of El Paso; one
brother, Felix Moreno Jr. of El Paso; one grandson, Angel Sotomayor and
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were under the direction of the Mount Carmel Funeral
Home, El Paso. Interment was in the Ft. Bliss Cemetery, El Paso. (2/26)
Ruckman
Mrs. Mary Alice Ruckman, 80, of Moorefield, died Feb. 24, at Grant
Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.
Born June 10, 1921, she was the daughter of the late William and Anna
(Gapp) Keller. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Welton Love
Ruckman, November 1984.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Lou Taylor of Fisher and Anna
Mae Bible of Moorefield; two sisters, Ann K. Heishman of Fisher and Helen
K. Ours of Dorcas; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Feb. 26, at the Elmore-Chambers Funeral Home
chapel, Moorefield, with interment in the Olivet Cemetery, Moorefield.
