Ernest Lee "Satchel" George, 81, of Petersburg, died Nov. 20, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.

Born July 5, 1921, in Petersburg, he was the son of the late Pearl Eston George and Ella (Kuykendall) George. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen R. (Porter) George Dec. 22, 2000.

He is survived by two daughters, Betty S. Shaffer and husband Donald of Petersburg and Joann Goldizen and husband Eddie of Maysville; six brothers, Harold George of Maysville, Clifton "Joe" George of Brushy Run, Junior George, Donald George, Merlin "Midge" George and Otha George, all of Petersburg; two grandsons, Scott Southerly and wife Melinda and Steve Southerly and wife Theresa; two stepgranchildren, Ryan Goldizen and Melissa Goldizen; three great-grandchildren, Steven, Cody and Jacob Southerly; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Nov. 22, at the Schaeffer Funeral Home chapel, Petersburg, with interment in Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg. (11/26)
 
Glenn William Davis Sr., 66, of Keyser, died Nov. 22, at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.

Born March 6, 1936, at Maysville, he was the son of the late Issac and Rachel (Rohrbaugh) Davis.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Doris Jean (Virts) Davis; two sons, Glenn William Davis Jr. and Joseph L. Davis, both of Fountain; one daughter, Patricia A. Arnold, Maysville; three brothers, Paul Davis, Tempe, Ariz., Alvin Davis, Maysville and Virgil Davis, Brucetown, Va.; four sisters, Maxine Heavener of Manassas, Va., Charlotte Martin, Petersburg, Elsie Hawk, Augusta, Ga. and Pauline Berg, Maysville; seven grandchildren, Clinton Davis, Short Gap, Crystal Davis, Aaron Davis, Mike Davis and Kristen Davis, all of Keyser, Shelaina Davis and Alicia Davis, both of Maysville; and one great-granddaughter, Hannah McKenna Davis, Short Gap.

Funeral services were Nov. 30, at the Smith Funeral Home chapel, Keyser, with interment in the Headsville Cemetery, Headsville. (11/26)
 
Emmett William Kile, 89, of Cabins, died Nov. 22, at his home, after a long illness.

Born April 12, 1913, in Cabins, he was the son of the late William Hewey Kile and Mary Belle (Johnson) Kile Sites. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mernie (Groves) Kile, Aug. 13, 1983;.

He is survived by two sisters, Grace Simmons, Petersburg and Mary Hickman, Cabins; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Nov. 25, at the Schaeffer Funeral Home chapel, Petersburg, with interment in Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville. (11/26)
 
Mrs. Esther E. Huffman, 72, Bayard and formerly of Eastlake, Ohio, died Nov. 10, at her home.

Born Jan. 30, 1930, in Scranton, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Ralph W. and Elizabeth M. (Williams) White. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James R. Huffman in 1967.

She is survived by one son, James H. Huffman, Euclid, Ohio; four daughters, Donna K. Gay, Bayard, Doretta E. Jenkins, Ashtabula, Ohio, Ruth E. Mandato, Concord, Ohio and Judith A. Bash, Madison, Ohio; one sister, Sara Swor, San Jose, Calif.; two brothers, Robert W. White, Madison and Ralph White, St. Petersburg, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, James Huffman, Jamie Huffman, Joseph Gay Jr., Richard Gay, Todd Jenkins, Terry Jenkins, Crystal Jenkins, Jennifer Hicks, Dyan Michalski, Anthony Mandato and Kelly Mandato; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Nov. 12, at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, Md., with interment in Willoughby Cemetery, Willoughby, Ohio. (11/19)
 
Edwin Guy Harman, 79, of 206 Pierpont St., Petersburg, died Nov. 13, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg. 

Born Nov. 16, 1922, in Mozer, he was the son of the late Robert M. and Jessie Mae (Calhoun) Harman.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Georgia (McUlty) Harman, whom he married Feb. 26, 1943; two daughters, Mrs. Delmer (Sherry) Harman of Waldorf, Md. and Mrs. Steve (Jackie) Zywicki of Woodbridge, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Ernest (Anna) Mullenax and Mrs. Edgar (Viola) Nelson, both of Petersburg; three grandchildren, Kathy Anne Harman, Waldorf, Md., Stacie Mallat and husband, Eric of Woodbridge, Va., Shaun Zywicki of North Carolina; three great-grandchildren, Samantha and Michael Zywicki and Annie Mallatt; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Nov. 16, at Grove Street United Methodist Church, with interment in Kline Cemetery, Kline.

Mrs. Janet May (Sites) Mongold, 102, of Dorcas, died Nov. 14, in Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg. 

Born October 8, 1900, at Masonville (now Dorcas), West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Achim W. and Ruhama (Jenkins) Sites. Her husband, Guy E. Mongold Sr., died January 11, 1983.

She is survived by one daughter, Janet Sue (and husband, Isaac) Swisher of Round Rock, TX; two sons, Guy E. Mongold Jr. (and wife, Barbara) of Ellicott City, MD., and John A. Mongold (and wife, Alice) of Dorcas; three granddaughters, Diane S. McGregor of Westlake, OH, Sandra J. Garrison of Quakertown, PA and Karen L. Opper of Reisterstown, MD; eight grandsons, I. Earl, Richard T., and Kenneth B. Swisher of Austin, TX, Charles W. Swisher of Round Rock, TX, Gregg A. Mongold of Ellicott City, MD, Jeffrey A. Mongold, Low Morr, VA, Gary A. and Mark A. Mongold of Dorcas; and twenty-three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Nov. 18, at Sites Chapel United Methodist Church, Dorcas, with interment in Sites-Elkhorn Cemetery, Dorcas.

Mrs. Betty Louise (Whetzel) Evans, 70, of Maysville, died Nov. 16, at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, Va.

Born June 18, 1932, in Dumpling Run, she was the daughter of the late Silas B. and Dora Alice (Mongold) Whetzel.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Adam Kee Evans; five sons, Robert K. Evans and Timothy S. Evans, both of Maysville, Roy W. Evans and Randy L. Evans, both of Dorcas and Larry W. Evans of Cabins; two sisters, Faye Ratliff of Timberville, Va. and Lonia Ratliff of Upper Tract; two brothers, Ace Whetzel of Mathias and Harvey Whetzel of Franklin; six grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren.

Funeral services were Nov. 19, at the Schaeffer Funeral Home chapel, Petersburg, with interment in Whetzel Family Cemetery, Dumpling Run. (11/19)
 
Ernest Cline Garber, 93, Petersburg, died Nov. 2, at the Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg, where he had resided since Jan. 2, 2001.

Born Aug. 27, 1909, in Harrisonburg, Va., he was the son of the late Rev. Peter Isaac and Lillian Frances (Cline) Garber. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Virginia (Dean) Garber, Aug. 5, 1988.

He is survived by two sons, Pastor Harold D. Garber and Joseph William Garber, both of Petersburg; five grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

The Petersburg Volunteer Fire Company conducted Nov. 5, at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg.

Funeral services were Nov. 6, at the funeral home chapel, with interment in Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg. (11/12)
 
Mrs. Freda Viola Alt, 70, of Middle River, Md., died Nov. 4, at Middle River.

Born Sept. 7, 1932, at Smoke Hole, she was the daughter of Jesse Lee Judy, Upper Tract and the late Amanda (Conrad) Judy.

She is survived by her husband, Charles A. Alt; four daughters, Carol Bourn and Joan Campbell, both of Middle River, Peggy Fisher, Pasadena, Md. and Jean Mantegna, Fallston, Md.; two brothers, Orville P. Judy, Smoke Hole and Harlan E. Judy, Lahmansville; one sister, Elaine F. Shreve, Smoke Hole; three half-brothers, Burlin Judy, Moorefield, Elden Judy, Petersburg and Paul Judy, Upper Tract; two half sisters, Brenda Cook, Upper Tract and Norma Brown, Richmond, Va.; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were Nov. 8 at Middle River Baptist Church, Middle River, with interment at Holly Hill Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Wilda Martha (Moreland) Cullers, 80, of Mount Storm, died Nov. 4, at the home of her daughter in LaPlata, Md., where she had resided for the past two months.

Born Feb. 23, 1922, in Mount Storm, she was the daughter of the late Oliver R. and Edith M. (Cosner) Moreland. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Oliver Hanlin in 1949 and her second husband, Gorman Cullers in 1966.

She is survived by one daughter, Donna (Hanlin) Keefer, LaPlata; two grandchildren, Mack Keefer and Vanessa Bowie; four great-grandchildren, Kathy Keefer, Heidi Keefer, Joey Bowie and Billy Bowie; and one brother, Carl Moreland of Mount Storm.

Funeral services were Nov. 8, at Calvary Temple, with interment in Locust Grove Cemetery, Mount Storm.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg. (11/12)
 
Mrs. Arletta (Harman) Bean, 90, of Moorefield, died Nov. 5, at the Hospice House, Williamsburg, Va., where she had been a resident for a short time.

Born Sept. 13, 1912, in Upper Marlboro, Md., she was the daughter of the late Thaddeus S. and Henrietta (Crites) Harman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Oscar H. Bean, March 25, 1996.

She is survived by one son, M. Allen Bean, Williamsburg; three grandchildren, Kristi Hartshorn, Abingdon, Va., Heather Martens, Fairfield, Conn. and Allen Bean of Tijeras, N.M.; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Nov. 10, at the Duffy Memorial Church, with interment in the Olivet Cemetery, Moorefield.

Arrangements were under the direction of Elmore Funeral Home, Moorefield. (11/12)
 
Mason Roosevelt "Mace" Dolly, 73, of Petersburg, died Nov. 6, at Hampshire Health Care Center, Romney, where he had resided since Sept. 18.

Born Jan. 30, 1929, in Cabins, he was the son of the late Edwin and Ina Jane (Shirk) Dolly.

He is survived by one sister, Lora Bennett of Gaithersburg, Md.; and 10 nieces and one nephew.

Funeral services were Nov. 9, at the Schaeffer Funeral Home chapel, Petersburg, with interment in the Dolly family Cemetery, Cabins. (11/12)
 
Jessie Phares Hinkle, 83, of Circleville, died Nov. 8, at the Pendleton Nursing Home, Franklin.

Born Nov. 19, 1918, in Circleville, she was the daughter of the late Charles B. Phares and Josie (Mullenax) Phares. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Merlin V. Hinkle, Oct. 26, 1985.

She is survived by one son, Gary Lee Hinkle of Circleville; and one grandson, Travis Jared Hinkle of Circleville.

Funeral services were Nov. 10, at the Circleville United Methodist Church interment in North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton.

Harry Edward Judy, 71, of Moorefield, died Nov. 8, at his home.

Born May 30, 1931, at Landes, he was the son of the late Harry Eston Judy and Delphia (Kesner) Judy.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Leda L. (Ours) Judy; two sons, Edward L. Judy and wife Jackie of Gulfport, Miss. and Kenneth H. Judy and wife Lynn of Durgon; one brother, Donald Judy and wife Lorene of Petersburg; four sisters, Arvella Sites and husband John, Mae Martin and husband Virgil, Lovetta Alt and husband Max, and Betty Greenwalt and husband Allen, all of Petersburg; three grandchildren, Adam Judy, Ryan Judy and Jennifer Judy Hardin; and four-great-grandchildren, Cloe Judy, Heather, Eddie and David Hardin.

Funeral services were Nov. 10, at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, with interment in Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville. (11/12)
 
Mrs. Edna Catherine Sites Post, 85, of Petersburg, died Nov. 8, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

Born March 9, 1917, in Dorcas, she was the daughter of the late Jesse N. Sites and Nettie C. (Getz) Sites.

Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Clay Post; one son, Daniel J. Post of Greeley, Colo.; two brothers, Otis P. Sites of Petersburg and Glenn Sites of Fremont, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Nov. 11, at Main Street United Methodist Church with interment in South Branch Valley Memorial Gardens, Petersburg.

Mrs. Ruth Belt, 88, of Petersburg, died Nov. 9, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va. She had been a resident at the Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg.

Born May 10, 1914, at Rough Run, she was the daughter of the late Jesse N. Sites and Nettie C. (Getz) Sites. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Howard Philip Belt, Nov. 5, 1988.

Surviving are two brothers, Glen H. Sites of Fremont, Calif. and Otis P. Sites of Petersburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are today (Tuesday), 11 a.m., at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Larry Cantu and Pastor Ken Miller officiating. Organist is Marie VanMeter and special music is by nieces Barbie Snell and Cindy Sites. Interment will be in Olivet Cemetery, Moorefield. Pallbearers are Steve Judy, Darin Judy, Jesse Sites, Steve Davis, Jerry Burke and Clayton Baker.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Basagic Funeral Home, Petersburg. (11/12)
 
Roscoe Junior Whetzel, 71, of Petersburg, died Nov. 9, at his home.

Born Jan. 8, 1931, in Dorcas, he was the son of the late Curry "Doc" Whetzel and Ruth (Vance) Whetzel.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Georgia Mae (Stump) Whetzel; two sons, Jerry Whetzel of Petersburg and Timmy Whetzel of Los Angeles, Calif.; two daughters, Shirley Whetzel Kessel of Maysville and Brenda Whetzel Chavarria of Paris, Va.; two sisters, Betty Cook of Maysville and Jean Runion of Dorcas; four grandchildren, Kami Dayton and Josh Kessel, both of Scherr and Christopher Whetzel and Justin Whetzel, both of Petersburg; and three great-grandchildren, Kelsey Dayton, Levi Dayton and Jacob Dayton.

Funeral services were Nov. 12, at the Schaeffer Funeral Home chapel, Petersburg, with interment in Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg. (11/12)
 
Carl McRoy Bowers, 69, of Petersburg, died Oct. 27, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

Born Dec. 3, 1932, in Upper Tract, he was the son of the late Carlie M. and Susie Jane (Alt) Bowers.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Beverly (Alt) Bowers; one son, Mark E. Bowers, Harrisonburg, Va.; one daughter, Terri Lynn Davis, Bradenburg, Ky.; four grandchildren, Thomas and John Bowers and Robbie and Amy Davis; three sisters, Lois Jean Jordan, Petersburg, Doris Ann Collins, Baton Rouge, La. and Deborah Mitchell, Kingwood, Texas; and three brothers, Ivan Bowers, Franklin, Elton Bowers, Glen Burnie, Md. and Lloyd Bowers, Moorefield.

Eastern Star conducted services, Oct. 29, at Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg. 

Funeral services were Oct. 30, at the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Gary Phillips and the Rev. Gregory Rotruck officiating. Interment was in the Cherry Hill Cemetery, Upper Tract.

Masonic graveside services were conducted by Franklin Lodge No. 144 AF & AM and military graveside services were by the combined veteran organizations of Grant County and the Petersburg High School JROTC. (11/5)
 
Goldie Anna Hedrick, 87, of Maysville, died Oct. 28, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.

Born Jan. 2, 1915, in Riverton, she was the daughter of the late Elsie McDonald. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond Nelson in 1937; and her second husband, Walter Hedrick in 1963

She is survived by one son, W. Leroy Hedrick, Maysville; three daughters, Ruth Raines, Cabins, Phyllis Armentrout, Seneca Rocks and Diana Martin, Maysville; and six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Maysville Volunteer Fire Company and auxiliary and Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department conducted services at Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, Oct. 30. 

Funeral services were Oct. 31 at the Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church, with interment in Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Maysville. (11/5)
 
Cheryl Suzanne McCulloh, 38, of Petersburg, died Oct. 28, at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland, Md.

Born Dec. 6, 1963, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of Harry R. and Mary Virginia (Cowatch) McCulloh of Petersburg.

Besides her parents, she is survived by one sister, Deborah A. Judy, Moorefield; one brother, H. Richard McCulloh, Petersburg; and her paternal grandmother, Elizabeth J. McCulloh, Frostburg, Md.

Funeral services were Nov. 1, at the Schaeffer Funeral Home chapel, Petersburg, with interment in Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville. (11/5)
 
Eston Seymour Nelson, 65, of Maysville, died Oct. 29, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.

Born Sept. 23, 1937, in Cabins, he was the son of the late Denver H. and Leona Belle (Alt) Nelson.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Maxine E. (Nesselrodt) Nelson; two sons, Rocky A. Nelson and wife Patsy, Moorefield and Eston Brent Nelson and wife Wendy, Sterling, Va.; one daughter, Brenda Sue Keplinger and husband Donald, Maysville; four grandchildren, Brian L. Keplinger, Heather Nelson, Eric Keplinger and Traci Nelson; one stepgranddaughter, Shelly Reel; four sisters, Norma Mullenax and Carol Mallow, both of Woodbridge, Va., Verda Kisamore, Louisa, Va. and Eunice Kisamore, Seneca Rocks; four brothers, Raymond Nelson, Maysville, Jackie Nelson, Shady Springs, Benny Nelson, Nashville, N.C. and Larry Nelson, Cabins; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Nov. 1, at the Petersburg Church of God, with interment in South Branch Memorial Gardens, Petersburg.

Military graveside services were conducted by the combined veterans organizations of Grant County and Petersburg High School JROTC.

Emory Dean Fleisher, 71, of Franklin, died Oct. 30, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, Va. 

Born July 6, 1931, in Franklin, he was the son of Charles William and Daisy Nell (Harper) Fleisher.

He is survived by his wife, Edith (Waybright) Fleisher, whom he married July 30, 1955; a daughter, Elizabeth Alt, Petersburg; two sons, Emory D. Fleisher Jr, Franklin and Michael D. Waybright, Fredericksburg, Va.; two brothers, John R. Fleisher, Harrisonburg, and Es-ton S. Fleisher, Franklin; and six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Nov. 2, at the Obaugh Funeral Home, McDowell, Va., with interment in the Blue Grass Cemetery. (11/05)
 
Charles L. "Buddy" Deane, 65, of Petersburg and formerly of Woodbridge, Va., died Oct. 31, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

He was the son of the late George Lewis and Olive Sylvia (Nance) Deane.

Surviving are his wife, Jo Ann Ingram Deane; one son, Charles Jason Deane of Bollingbrook, Ill.; one daughter, Charlotte Louise Deane Juarez of Dale City, Va.; one stepson, Woodrow Brent Stanley; one stepdaughter, Marilyn Lynnea Stanley; three grandchildren, Christian Domingo, Jayson Anthony Juarez and Nathan Kenneth Deane; and one stepgranddaughter, April Lynnea Stanley.

Funeral services were Nov. 4, at the Mountcastle Funeral Home chapel, Dale City, with interment in Riverview Cemetery, Charlottesville, Va. (11/5)
 
Malcolm G. "Mac" Lyon, 87, of Lahmansville, died Nov. 2, at the Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg, where he had been a resident since July 24, 1997.

Born July 21, 1915, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late David Lyon and Cora (Rexrode) Lyon. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Angie (Shobe) Lyon, Nov. 23, 1979.

Surviving are his second wife, Clela (Phares) Keplinger Lyon; two sons, Douglas M. Lyon of Old Fields and William W. Lyon of Lahmansville; two stepsons, Darwin Keplinger and Randy A. Keplinger, both of Lahmansville; two stepdaughters, Sharon Keplinger of Maysville and Elaine Welling of Moorefield; two sisters, his twin, Mary Lagore of York, Pa. and Lois Cassady of Williamsport; three grandchildren, 12 stepgrandchildren, three great-grandchildren, 10 stepgreat-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Nov. 5, at the Schaeffer Funeral Home chapel, Petersburg, with interment in the Lahmansville Cemetery at Lahmansville. (11/5)
