JANESVILLE-- Senora M. Foss, age 92, a resident of Rock Haven, died
there on Sat., July 6, 2002. She was born on April 1, 1910, in Warsaw,
MN, the daughter of Charles and Ella (Dalbotten) Charlson. She was a graduate
of U-Minnesota and was a sales correspondent for Parker Pen Ltd. from 1948
to 1962, and taught at the Chippewa Falls and Fort Atkinson Public Schools
from 1964 to 1971.
She is survived by her son, Richard Foss of Janesville; 2 grandsons,
Mark Foss of Denver, CO and Mike Kraus of Janesville; and a brother-in-law,
William (Myrtle) Oestreich of Janesville. She was preceded in death by
her parents; 3 brothers: Clarence, Obert and Sigmund; and a sister, Alma

BELOIT--Lorraine B. Ford, age 57, of 545 Public Ave. Beloit, died Wed.,
July 17, 2002 at her home. She was born on Feb. 19, 1945 in Chicago, Illinois,
the daughter of James and Henrietta (Gregory) Benbow. Lorraine lived in
Chicago until moving to Janesville in 1995, and most recently in Beloit
this last year.
She is survived by 3 children: Laura (Jasen) Dewey of Janesville, Henrietta
Ford of Fitchburg, MA, and Christine (Cornelius) Coleman of Beloit; 11
grandchildren: Phillip, Clinton, Phylicia, Malcolm, Calvin, Matthew, Aisha,
Lakethia, Ellanisha, Christopher, and Jazmine; a brother, Charles (Kathy)
Benbow of Berwin, IL; and 3 sisters: Henrietta McQuade of Janesville, Georgene
Scavone of Berwin,IL, and Nancy (Frank) Zdenovec of Laughlin, NV; many
nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; and 2 devoted friends, Shelly
Williams and Rev. Paullette Farrar, both of Beloit. She was preceded in
death by her parents; a son, Richard in infancy; a granddaughter, Aalyiah,
at birth; 3 brothers: Joe, Ernest, and Kenny Benbow; and 2 sisters, Joan
Lee and Marie Eckel.

Freeman, LaVerne Paul
June 22, 1916 - July 13, 2002
JANESVILLE--LaVerne P. Freeman, age 86, a former longtime Janesville
area resident, passed away Sat., July 13, 2002, at Ft. Atkinson Memorial
Hospital. He was born June 22, 1916, in Grant County, WI, the son of the
late Oscar and Lena (Olson) Freeman. On June 22, 1939, he married the former
Lucille Walk in Clinton, WI; she preceded him in death on March 25, 1987.
He had farmed for several years in the Clinton area and then worked as
a self-employed carpenter until his retirement. He and his wife were members
of the Good Sam Club and loved traveling south in their motor home! He
was a past member of Faith Lutheran Church, Janesville.
LaVerne is survived by his brother, Donald (Beatrice) Freeman; many
nieces and nephews. Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death
by his sister and brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wed., July 17, 2002, at
FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2116 Mineral Point Ave., Janesville, with Rev. Dick
Inglett officiating. Burial will be in Milton Lawns Memorial Park. Friends

March 1, 1930 - July 17, 2002
JANESVILLE--Robert E. "Bob" Gackstatter, age 72, a longtime Janesville
resident, died Wed., July 17, 2002, at his son's home, with his family
at his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born March 1,
1930, in Janesville, the son of Edward and Beulah (Graves) Gackstatter.
On Oct. 16, 1947, he married the former Elaine R. Gilbertson in Dubuque,
IA; she died March 21, 1990. Bob attended Janesville schools and worked
at GMAD for 32 years, retiring in 1982. He is a member of UAW Local 95
and the Loyal Order of Moose. He enjoyed camping at Dodgeville and Yellowstone
parks. He looked forward to spending time in the fresh air. Along with
his 3 sons, he bought and refurbished older cars.
He is survived by his 3 sons: Danny Gackstatter and Dale (Ann) Gackstatter,
both of Janesville, and Kim (Rhonda) Gackstatter of Littlerock, CA; his
mother, Beulah Gackstatter of Janesville; 8 grandchildren: Robby, Katie,
and David of Janesville, Valerie of Littlerock, CA, Danny of Rockford,
IL, Cassie, Danielle, and Frankie, all of California; 4 great-grandchildren;
and 2 brothers, Darwin "Jack" (Millie) Gackstatter and Roger (Nancy) Gackstatter,
both of Janesville. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his
wife of 43 years, Elaine; infant son, Robert Alan; and granddaughter, Brenda.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tues., July 23, 2002,
at ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, Janesville, with Rev. Judi Huseth officiating.
Private interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends and relatives may

FORT ATKINSON, WI--Josephine M. Gorniak, age 82, passed away Tues.,
July 30, 2002, at her home. She was born Aug. 24, 1919, in Wynegem-Antwerpt,
Belgium, the daughter of Joseph and Marie (Nys) VanHooydonk. On Sept. 8,
1945, Josephine married Justine A. Gorniak, Sr. in Belgium. Josephine was
a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ft. Atkinson, WI.
Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Justine A. Gorniak, Sr. of Ft.

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, WI--Marjorie E. Graap, age 87, of Prairie du Chien,
WI, died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.
She was born Sept. 7, 1914, in Sparta, WI, daughter of Hubert and Dollie
(Harris) Marx. She married Carl Graap on Feb. 24, 1934, in Caledonia, MN;
he preceded her in death Aug. 29, 1986. She worked at the Piggly Wiggly
Grocery Store for 40 years. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary,
the Royal Neighbors, the Eagles Club Auxiliary, and the Parish Council
of Catholic Women.
She is survived by 4 sons: Allyn of Manassas, VA, Donald (Norma) of
San Diego, CA, David (Lee) of Janesville, WI, and Dennis (Kay) of San Antonio,
TX; a sister, Helen Krachey of Tomah, WI; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Sylvester Marx; and
2 sisters, Dorothy Swegle and Marian Marx.

JANESVILLE/MILTON--Katherine L. Griep, age 92, a former longtime Milton
resident, passed away Thursday afternoon, July 18, 2002, at Rock Haven,
where she had resided the past 3 years. She was born Sept. 4, 1909, in
Janesville, the daughter of the late John B. and Katherine C. (Lee) Kauffman.
She attended school in Janesville, and was a graduate of Janesville High
School. She then went to St. Mary's School of Nursing in Milwaukee, WI,
and graduated as a registered nurse. She returned to Janesville, and worked
for over 40 years at Mercy Hospital until her retirement. She married Edward
J. Griep in Sept., 1933; he preceded her in death on March 5, 1993. Katherine
was a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Milton, and was an
active volunteer for church activities. She was a member of the 3rd Order
of St. Francis. Most of all, her family was the joy of her life!
She is survived by her 3 children: Edward L. (Judy) Griep of Destin,
FL, Robert J. (Delores) Griep of Janesville, and Rose (David) Bartz of
Three Forks, MT; 17 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren;
many nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to her husband and parents,
she was preceded in death by 4 brothers: Basil Kauffman, Don Kauffman,
Robert Kauffman, and James Kauffman; and 4 sisters: Marion Wietlspach,
Eleanor Dewey, Jean Schachtschneider, and Ellen Tropp.

as a bartender for 30 years. He was a member of Fellowship of Christian

JANESVILLE-- Gilbert R. "Gib" Hanson, age 90, of 2415 Mt. Zion Ave.,
passed beyond our present sight to live forevermore in God's Eternal Light
on Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Mercy Hospital. He was born on July 29,
1911, in Blanchardville, WI, the son of Hjalmer and Rose (Watkins) Hanson.
Gib married Violet M. Kotwitz on Jan. 18, 1941, in Dubuque, IA. She preceded
him in death on Feb. 12, 1984. He was a baker for over 45 years for Pregont's,
Cunningham's and later for Woodman's Food Market. Gib was a man of many
talents and had played guitar with the group, "Rhythm Masters."
He is survived by his 7 children: Gil Hanson, Gar (Candy Keating) Hanson,
Lance (Liz) Hanson, Rochelle (Mel) Walker, LaVonne Streuly, Marilyn (Terry)
Dutcher and Annette (Joe) Hyams, all of Janesville; 16 grandchildren; 34
great granchildren; 2 sisters, Hazel (Bob) Gould of Darlington and Darlene
(Dick) Messner of Janesville; and a brother, Alton (Lil) Arneson of Janesville.

JANESVILLE/CORNELIUS, NC--Beryle Dale Harris, age 82, of Janesville
and formerly of Cornelius, NC, died Fri., July 26, 2002, at Mercy Hospital
in Janesville. He was born on March 20, 1920, in Rockford, IL. He was the
son of Fred and Aylee Harris. He married Marion Bjork on Oct. 14, 1945,
in Wisconsin Dells. Dale, as he liked to be called, worked at JATCO for
32 years, retiring in 1982. Dale led a full and active life until the day
the Lord called him home. He was a Golden Gloves boxer in his youth. He
loved to fish and golf and became a tournament pool player after moving
to North Carolina in 1996. Dale and Marion returned to Janesville in December
of 2001. He was a beloved husband and a kind and loving father, grandfather,
great-grandfather and friend. His sense of humor, the twinkle in his eyes
and his endearing smile will be remembered and missed by his family and

ELKHORN, WI--Helen M. Holtz, age 86, of Hazel Ridge Rd., Elkhorn, died
Wed., July 17, 2002, at the Aurora Lakeland Medical Center, Elkhorn. She
was born Aug. 31, 1915, in Algonquin, IL, the daughter of Charles and Minnie
Dammyer. She married William A. Holtz May 22, 1938, in Algonquin; he preceded
her in death June 29, 1998. Helen was a member of the Elkhorn First Evangelical
Lutheran Church and a former member of the Walworth County Farm Bureau
& Walworth County Holstein Association.
She is survived by a son, William C. Holtz of Elkhorn. She was preceded
in death by 2 brothers, Edwin and Charles; a sister, Irma; and her parents.

WHITEWATER--Louise Isbell, age 78, passed away at Menomonee Falls Community
Hospital Mon., July 22, 2002. She was born Jan. 3, 1924, in Elberfeldt,
Germany, the daughter of Johann and Emmy Butgereit. They moved to the United
States in 1929, settling in St. Charles, IL. She was united in marriage
to Lester Isbell May 11, 1946, in St. Charles, IL. They moved to Whitewater
in 1947, where they managed the Red Hen Inn for 14 years. She also worked
at Whitewater Electronics as a supervisor, retiring to spend her time caring
for her aging parents. Louise was a very active member of First English
Lutheran Church, serving as a volunteer at the Thrift Shoppe for over 28
years, as the church historian for the past 16 years, and in many other

Jahnke, Eva Mae
January 3, 1906 - July 13, 2002
FT. ATKINSON--Eva Mae Jahnke, age 96, died July 13, 2002, at Skaalen
Home. She was born on Jan. 3, 1906, in Milton, the daughter of Bert and
Alice (Lyke) Guernsey. Mae graduated from Milton Union High School in 1924.
She attended Rock County Rural Normal School in Janesville and received
a B.S. in Education from Whitewater State Teachers College in 1933. She
married Herbert August Jahnke on Aug. 13, 1940; he preceded her in death
on Oct. 7, 1972. She was a teacher for 29 years, teaching in Dane, Rock,
and Jefferson Counties. She retired from East Elementary School, Jefferson,
in 1971. She was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of
Ft. Atkinson, the St. Paul's Ladies Aid, Over 60 Club, Birthday Club, and
the Homemakers' Auxiliary. She was a charter member and officer of both
the local AARP and Jefferson County Retired Teacher's Association, and
belonged to the State and National Education Associations. For many years
she was a member of and worked as a volunteer for the Health Care Auxiliary,
Daily Bread, and the Fort Atkinson Senior Center.
Surviving are a son, Richard (friend, Kathy Lewinski) Jahnke of Madison;
sisters-in-law, Fern Jahnke of Ft. Atkinson and Bernadette Guernsey of
Edgerton; a brother-in-law, Gus Klatt of Ft. Atkinson; several nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her sisters,
Pearl Jones and Arlene Klatt; and her brothers, Harley and Stuart.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wed., July 17, 2002, at NITARDY
FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, Ft. Atkinson, with Rev. Paul Scharrer officiating.

Johnson, Anna Elsie Cowell

DELAVAN, WI--Anna Elsie Cowell Johnson, age 91, longtime Delavan resident
and currently of Westchester, PA, died at her son's home in Westchester
Tues., July 30, 2002. Anna left Delavan about a year ago to live with her
son after her husband Ralph died. Anna was born Dec. 29, 1900, in Woodglen,
NJ, the daughter of Frederick Cowell and Flossie Park. Anna married Ralph
B. Johnson Aug. 11, 1934, in Darien, WI; Ralph died Oct. 2, 2001. Anna
was a homemaker, raising two fine sons. She was an active member of First
Baptist Church of Delavan.
Anna is survived by 2 sons, Ralph "Bud" (Gayla) Johnson of Westchester,
PA and Roberet (Jo Anne) Johnson of Florida; 10 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

WILLIAMS BAY, WI--Gladys D. Johnson, age 88, passed away Wed., July
17, 2002, at Williams Bay Care Center. She was born Aug. 30, 1913, in Chicago,
the daughter of Charles and Dagmar Nelson. She married David Sam Johnson
Oct. 19, 1935, in Chicago; he preceded her in death in 1978. Gladys worked
at the Continental Bank in Chicago for 5 years before she and her husband
moved to Williams Bay; she then worked for the State Bank of Elkhorn for
22 years, and at the Williams Bay Public Library for 14 years. She was
a charter member of Williams Bay Lutheran Church, a Sunday School teacher,
a member of the church choir, and member and past president of the WELC
for 25 years. Gladys was charter member and past president of the Williams
Bay Lioness Club, RSVP volunteer, volunteer at Lakeland Pre-School, and
was a Girl Scout leader.
She is survived by 3 daughters: Jo-Ann (Wayne) Polinske of Surprise,
AZ, Linda (Thomas) Ferris of Shell Lake, WI, and Jennifer (Richard) Arndt
of Austin, TX; 6 grandchildren: Charles Tehan, Christine Wright, Karin
Livingston, Paul, Sarah Elizabeth and Peter Arndt; 3 great-grandchildren:
Christian, Victoria and Luke Wright; a niece, Donna (Ronald) Carlson Rak
of Orland Park, IL; a brother-in-law, Karl Erik (Elsie) Johansson of Sweden;
other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband, and a sister, Edith Carlson.

resident, died Wednesday morning, July 31, 2002, at Linden Grove Health
Care Facility in New Berlin, WI. She was born May 24, 1912, in Janesville,
the daughter of Willis and Dora (Henrich) Yeomans. Dorothy married Thomas
Patrick Joyce June 3, 1935, at St. Mary's Catholic Church; he died Oct.
24, 1969. Dorothy was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and sang in
the choir for many years. Also at St. Mary's, she directed St. Mary's Wall
Street Theater and was active in Minstrel Shows.
Survivors include 4 daughters and a son: Judy Joyce of Greenfield,
WI, Andy Loveland of Janesville, Jeane (Richard) Bauer of Campbellsport,
WI, Col. James (Stephanie) Joyce of Charleston, SC; and Dottie (Tom) Shannon
of Broomfield, CO; grandchildren: Debbie (Wayne) Gasek, David (Monica)
Hoy, Stephen Hoy, Dan (Diane) Hoy, Katie (Kris) Barth, Thomas P. Joyce,
III, Jody (Rob) Jenkins, Patrick Joyce, David Loveland, Jr., Jamie (Jon)
Swenson, Matthew (Joy) Loveland, Zachary Loveland, Kelly (David) Sterken,
Richard (Mierla) O'Connor, Trevor (Shannon) O'Connor, Lacy Smith, Allyson,
Lauren & Sara Joyce, Angela (Tim) Horne, Megan & Kelsey Shannon;
many loving great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Kay, Gen & Margaret
Joyce, and Edna Joyce; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her
husband and parents, Dorothy was predeceased by 4 sons: Thomas Jr., John,
Christopher, and twin sons, Timothy & Thomas, who died in infancy;
son-in-law, David Loveland; daughter-in-law, Vicki (Terwilliger) Joyce;
sisters: Georgean Yeomans, Violet Smith, and Hazel Canna; brothers: Roy
& Emmett Hovland; sisters-in-law: Mary, Betty and Jane Joyce; and brother-in-law,
at Delavan Lake, but most of all, Mom, Thanks for the Music."
August 17, 1925 - July 3, 2002
EDGERTON--Marcella Kerber, age 76, of Edgerton, died Wednesday, July
3, 2002, at Edgerton Memorial Community Hospital. She was born Aug. 17,
1925, in St. Paul, MN, the daughter of John and Emma (Kappler) Schafer.
Marcella married Kenneth Kerber on April 20, 1946, in Chicago, and was
a homemaker. She has lived in Edgerton the past 14 years and was a member
of Trinity Lutheran Church, Edgerton.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Diane Brand of Edgerton and Joyce Christian
of Las Vegas, NV; a sister, Nelvie Forgey of South Dakota; 3 grandchildren;
4 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002, at TRINITY
LUTHERAN CHURCH, Edgerton, with Pastor Roy Poltrock officiating. Visitation
was from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church. In lieu of other expressions
of sympathy, a memorial for her has been established. ALBRECHT FUNERAL
HOME, Edgerton, assisted the family.
Killian, E. Jane
February 12, 1930 - July 8, 2002
JANESVILLE--E. Jane Killian, age 72, of 1936 N. Washington, died Mon.,
July 8, 2002, at Mercy Hospital. She was born Feb. 12, 1930, in Rochester,
NY. She married Charles Killian in 1946; he died in 1951. She later married
Charles Olin in 1957; he died in 1998. Jane was a homemaker her entire
life and raised 4 children.
She is survived by her 4 children: Charles "Chas" J. Killian of northern
Wisconsin, JoAnn Jackson of Janesville, Linda (Jerry) Corkhill of Irma,
WI, and Cindy LaCount of Janesville; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Sat., July 13, 2002, at
the WHITCOMB-LYNCH-OVERTON FUNERAL HOME, 15 N. Jackson St., Janesville,
with Rev. Reggie Ballard officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday
from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Koeneman, Verna B.
October 19, 1911 - July 8, 2002
EVANSVILLE--Verna B. Koeneman, age 90, a many-year resident of Evansville,
died Mon., July 8, 2002. She was born Oct. 19, 1911, in Clarno Township,
Green County, to Homer and Minnie (Campbell) Anderson. She was a member
of St. John's Lutheran Church of Evansville.
Verna is survived by 2 sons, Alan (Connie) of Tucson, AZ and James
(Arlene) of Wheeler, WI; a sister, Kitty May Whitehead of Monroe; 9 grandchildren;
15 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded
in death by her parents; and her husband, Edward.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Fri., July 12, 2002, at
ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, Evansville, with Reverend Paul Forde officiating.
Burial will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday

JANESVILLE--Carol A. Kolberg, age 70, of Richardson St., died Thurs.,
Aug. 1, 2002, at home. Carol was born Aug. 16, 1931, in Elkhorn, WI, the
daughter of Carl and Bercia (Jensen) Jacobs. She married Richard Kolberg
Sept. 29, 1956, in St. Jude's Catholic Church, Beloit; Richard died April
21, 1970. Carol was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Janesville,
and collected teddy bears, loved to travel, and babysat her nieces.
Survivors include 4 sisters and 2 brothers: Norma (Fred) Weber of Janesville,
WI, Phyllis (Philip) Putman of Darien, WI, Richard (Mary) Jacobs of Beaver
Dam, WI, Betty (Gordon) Putman of Clinton, WI, Dennis (Joyce) Jacobs of
Darien, WI, and Marcia (Alan) Quade of Asheville, NC; several nieces and
nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Carol was predeceased
by her daughter, Rhonda, on April 19, 1970; and her brother, Robert.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tues., Aug.
6, 2002, at ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, with Fr. Eric Nielsen presiding.
Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitations will be Monday from
6 until 8 p.m. at the church and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of

Kravik, Kenneth "Ken" Howard
September 22, 1946 - July 15, 2002
EDGERTON--Kenneth "Ken" Howard Kravik, age 55, passed away Mon., July
15, 2002, at his home. He was born Sept. 22, 1946, in Ft. Atkinson, WI,
the son of Howard and Gladys (Vethe) Kravik. He graduated from Cambridge
High School in 1964. Ken served in the U.S. Army from 1967 until 1968.
He worked as an industrial engineer for General Motors in Janesville for
32 years prior to his retirement.
Surviving are his son, Jason (Diana) Kravik of Ft. Mill, SC; his daughter,
Nicole (Toby) Krause of Helenville, WI; a grandson, Cody Jason Kravik;
his mother, Gladys Kravik of Cambridge, WI; his sister, Sharon Spaanem
of Ft. Atkinson, WI; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Ken
was preceded in death by his father, Howard Kravik.
Funeral services will take place at 8 p.m. on Thurs., July 18, 2002,
at NITARDY FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, Cambridge, WI, with Rev. Bill Beyer officiating.

DELAVAN--Shirley Mae La Bonne, age 64, of 2438 South Shore Dr., died
Sun., July 14, 2002, at her home. She was born on Aug. 11, 1937, in Palatine,
IL, the daughter of Donald and Alma (Toppel) Ritter. She married Daniel
La Bonne on Nov. 19, 1955, at St. James Church in Arlington Heights, IL;
she has lived in this area since 1964.
She is survived by her husband, Daniel of Delavan; 3 daughters: Lynn
La Bonne of Jefferson, Denise Metzger of Elkhorn, and Dawn (fiance Richard
Lee) La Bonne of Walworth; a son, Daniel (Carmella) of Lake Geneva; 4 grandchildren:
Jonathon and Jerad Fleming, Christopher La Bonne, and Angelina Buffa; a
sister, Marie Heinsohn of Elkhorn; a brother, Harold (Karen) Ritter; her
mother, Alma of Whitewater; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death
by her father; a son, Robert; her father-in-law; and her mother-in-law.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thurs., July 18, 2002, at
MONROE FUNERAL HOME, Delavan, with Rev. Rick Wasmund officiating. Visitation
will be Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will
be in Roselawn Memory Gardens, Delavan.
