James Paul Thompson 
James Paul Thompson, 77, of Wytheville, Va., died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at his residence. 
A graveside service will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. at the West End Cemetery, Wytheville, Va. 
He was born in Big Stone Gap, Va., a son of the late Aubrey and Lydia Chaffin Thompson. 
He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Douglas Thompson. 
Survivors include seven cousins, Liddy V. Puckett of Honaker, Va., Lucy Thompson, Lola Stevens and Hester Caudill, all of North Tazewell, Va., Sue Brown of Tazewell, Va., Margie Hayes of Bluefield, Va., and Frank Thompson of Bluewell, W.Va.; special friends, Barbara Montgomery, Ryan, Brandon and Ronnie, all of Wytheville, Va. 
The family will receive friends Saturday, Nov. 9, from 1 to 1:45 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Dalton Lee Tolbert, infant, of Rural Retreat, Va., died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, in the Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City, Tenn. 
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m. at Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel in Marion, Va., with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery. 
He is survived by his parents, Jodi Buck and Rodney Tolbert of Rural Retreat, Va.; maternal grandmother, Debbie Garrick of Marion, Va.; maternal grandparents, Joey and Trina Buck of Rural Retreat, Va.; paternal grandparents, Peggy and Dean Kimberlin of Saltville, Va., and Jake and Joanna Tolbert of Saltville, Va.; great-grandparents, Mildred and John Harris of Marion, Va., Madelyn Buck of Wytheville, Va., and Charles and Dorothy Ratcliff of Saltville, Va.; great-great-grandmother, Nannie Welch of Wytheville, Va.; special aunts, Jamie Garrick of Marion, Va., and Kendra Buck of Rural Retreat, Va.; a special uncle, Matthew Garrick of Marion, Va.; and many other relatives.

Rouser G. Snodgrass 
Rouser G. "R.G." Snodgrass, 87, of Wytheville, Va., died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, in the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Lexington, Va. 
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, at noon at Barnett Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Charles McMillan officiating. Entombment will be in the Cunningham Memorial Park Mausoleum, St. Albans, W.Va. 
He was born in Kanawha County, W.Va., a son of the late Perry and Ada Wiblin Snodgrass. He was a member of the Wytheville Pentecostal Holiness Church, the Gideons International, the Masonic Lodge, A.F.&A.M., the AARP, the Full Gospel Business Men's Association and the United Commercial Travelers. He also worked with the Lord's Storehouse in Wytheville, Va. 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Louise Jeffries Snodgrass; two sisters, Lynn Grey and Gertrude Ward. 
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Ann Lisa and Gary Lewis of Douglasville, Ga.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Harold G. and Carol Snodgrass of Buena Vista, Va., Stephen P. and Sue Snodgrass of Concord, Ohio, and John P. and Cynde Snodgrass of Farmington, Ohio; two sisters, Rhoda May Asbury of Marmet, W.Va., and Vallie Mitchell of Dunbar, W.Va.; special friends, Ken Baker, Shirley Smith, Ralph Scott and Danny Montgomery; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. 
The family will receive friends Friday, Nov. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Viola "Ola" Poole Hurd, 77, of Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va. 
Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Oscar "Sonny" Ayers officiating. Interment will be in the Bethany Cemetery, Poplar Camp section of Wythe County, Va. 
She was born in Wythe County, Va., a daughter of the late Charles Eugene and Ada Dean Poole. She was a member of Jackson Chapel Church of God of Prophecy. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Garfield Hurd Jr.; and one brother, Dave Poole. 
Survivors include one son, Thomas W. "Tom" Jones of Austinville, Va.; one daughter, Annette Robertson of Wytheville, Va.; four grandchildren and spouses, Tracey Jones, Casey and Laura Jones, Ben and Stacy Cannon, and Jennifer Robertson; one great-grandchild, Audrey Kate Jones; and two sisters and brother-in-law, Mildred Eversole of Austinville, Va., and Kathryn and Jake Horney of Wytheville, Va.

Elmer Shell Stuart 
Elmer Shell "Bub" Stuart, 72, of Ceres, Va., died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va. 
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, at 6 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, Va., with the Rev. Tom Oliphant and Pastor Jim Conley officiating. Interment will be private. 
He was born Oct. 27, 1930, at Mechanicsburg, Va., a son of the late Ed and Reba Melvin Stuart. He was a past governor of the Ceres Ruritan Club and a member of the Mechanicsburg Christian Church. 
He is survived by his wife, Dare Neel Stuart of Ceres, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. and Tamela Stuart of Mechanicsburg, Va.; a daughter, Judi K. Stuart of Mechanicsville, Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Clara Stuart of Ashland, Va.; a sister, Nell S. Morehead of Mechanicsburg, Va.; a sister-in-law, Shirley M. Repass of Wytheville, Va.; three grandchildren, Hunter Stuart, Kendell Stuart and Sarah Wellford; and several nieces and nephews.

Rebecca Duncan Watson, 61, of Withers Road, Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002. 
Funeral services will be Sunday, Nov. 10, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel, Wytheville, Va. Interment will be in the West End Cemetery, Wytheville, Va. 
She was a graduate of Jackson Memorial High School and Radford College. She taught school at Spiller Primary for many years. 
She was preceded in death by her father, John C. Duncan; and a special aunt, Audrey Davidson. 
Survivors include a daughter, Leigh Ann Watson of Wytheville, Va.; her mother, Lucille T. Duncan of Wytheville, Va.; a sister, Jeannie Duncan of Wytheville, Va.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Tommy and Barbara Duncan of Austinville, Va., Johnny and Peggy Duncan of Wytheville, Va.; two nieces, Stephanie Berg and Michelle Perkins; a great-nephew, Joshua T. Berg; and two great-nieces, Taylor Berg and Madison Perkins; and a special uncle, Bob Davidson.

Vona Marie Allen, 73, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va. 
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. at the Wytheville Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. 
She is survived by her husband, Asa C. Allen of Danville, Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Charles Murphy of Wytheville, Va., and Constance and George McCarthy of Norcross, Ga.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael and Linda Allen of the Ft. Chiswell section of Max Meadows, Va., and Perry C. Allen of Midlothian; and five grandchildren.

Frank W. Stephens 
Dr. Frank W. Stephens, P.D., 88, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002. 
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 11 a.m. in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Wytheville, Va., with Pastor Steve Ridenhour officiating. Interment will be in St. Johnís Lutheran Cemetery, Wytheville, Va. 
He was the son of the late Stephen Sanders and Mary Prichard Stephens. He was a graduate of Wytheville High School where he spent most of his time on the athletic field. In his junior year, he was voted as quarterback second team for the state. He went to pharmacy school and graduated in 1941. In school, he was president of freshman class, on the honor council and the deanís list (Kappa Psi). He was a former member of the Rotary Club, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, past president of the Southwest Virginia Pharmacy Association, and longtime member of the Iron Boots Society. He was an avid fisherman and part-time farmer. He received his pharmacy degree in 1984. 
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dean Johnstone Stephens; daughter, Melva Stephens Potts; and son, Frank Dean Stephens. 
Survivors include his wife, Elsie Havens Stephens of Wytheville, Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mariflo Stephens and Fred Heblich of Charlottesville, Va., and Deanna and Robert Taylor of Richmond, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Alfred and Dianne Stephens of Wytheville, Va.; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, John and Bonnie Brinkley of Seattle, Wash.; a sister, Ethel Stephens Brown of Wytheville, Va.; special friend, Matthew Ridenhour; eight grandchildren, Al Stephens, Sharon Smith, Frank Bruce Stephens, Alisa Plackett, Lee Taylor, Reed Taylor, Jane Heblich and Isabel Heblich; four great-grandchildren, Walker Stephens, Senah Stephens, Hannah Smith and Sydney Stephens; and several nieces and nephews.

Harold Harman 
Harold Harman of Aiken, S.C., formerly of Wytheville, Va., died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002. 
Funeral services were held at Talatha Baptist Church in Aiken, S.C. Burial was in the church cemetery. 
He was a 1952 graduate of George Wythe High School. 
He is survived by his wife, Dixie; one son, David Michael Harman of Aiken, S.C.; one daughter, Brenda Smith of Simpsonville, S.C.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Geneva Mae Waller 
Geneva Mae Waller, 87, of Ivanhoe, Va., died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, in the Asbury Center at Birdmont, Wytheville, Va. 
Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Forest United Methodist Church in Ivanhoe, Va. Interment will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Ivanhoe, Va. 
She was born in Wythe County, Va., a daughter of the late Harry Thomas and Maude Wright Sawyers. She was a lifelong member of the Forest United Methodist Church and served many years as pianist. 
She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Harry Waller; sister, Geraldine Sawyers; and brother, Marzelle Tony Sawyers. 
Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Lester B. Waller of the home; son and daughters-in-law, Robert L. "Bob" and Susie Waller of Ivanhoe, Va., and Maxine Waller of Ivanhoe, Va.; four grandchildren and spouses, Leslie Waller, Tim and Treva Waller, Michael and Misty Waller, and Tiffany and Jerry Leicht; a stepgranddaughter and spouse, Rená and Richie Conner; two great-grandchildren, Josh Waller and Elizabeth Waller; two great-stepgrandchildren, Chase Conner and Ian Conner; and a sister, Juanita Rector of Galax, Va.

Herman Charles Hanshew, 66, of North Las Vegas, Nev., died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, in Las Vegas, Nev. 
Funeral services were held in Las Vegas, Nev. Burial was in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City, Nev. 
He was born Nov. 9, 1935, in Virginia, the son of Nellie Hubble Hanshew and the late Herman V. Hanshew. He was a 26-year resident of Las Vegas, Nev., and was a retired U.S. Army veteran. 
He is survived his wife, Sharon Hanshew; six daughters, Debra Patrick, Katrina Turner, Bobby Jo LeCates and Valerie Winterton, all of Las Vegas, Nev., Cheryl Davis and Christina Hanshew, both of Colorado; four sons, Kenneth Hanshew, Kevin Hanshew, Harold Hanshew and Keith Hanshew, all of Las Vegas, Nev.; his mother, Nellie Hanshew of Nebo, Va.; one sister, Margaret Moseley of Thomaston, Ga.; 29 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Nannie Emma Simmerman Henderlite 
Nannie Emma Simmerman Henderlite, 90, of Dublin, Va., died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at the Highland Rehab Center, Dublin, Va. 
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 14, at 2 p.m. at the Dublin United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Travis and the Rev. Bill Perkins officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin, Va. 
Born Dec. 21, 1911, in Smyth County, Va., she became a member of Dublin United Methodist Church on March 20, 1949. She taught Sunday school for over 50 years and continued to teach the fourth and fifth graders until her health would not permit. She served with her husband as UMY counselors for more than 25 years. She was the chairman of the Altar Guild for over 30 years. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women. In the 1950s and 1960s, she was a member of the Wesleyan Service Guild and served as president of this group. She was a member of the Seeker's Circle. For over 50 years, she sang soprano in the adult choir. She was the founder of the Honeysuckle Garden Club, a club for the children and youth. She was also president of the Federation of Garden Clubs for many years and was also a certified judge. She and her husband were in charge of the New River Valley Fair Association's Flower Show for many years. 
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Harry Mitchell Henderlite; her parents, James and Emma Simmerman; four brothers, Charlie Simmerman, Joe Simmerman, Oscar Simmerman and Jimmy Simmerman; and three sisters, Anna Simmerman, Carrie Hutton and Mattie Putman. 
Survivors includes nephews and spouses, Ernest "Junior" and Mary Lynn Hutton of Dublin, Va., Harry and Karen Simmerman of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., Billy Simmerman of Greensboro, N.C., James Simmerman of Chesapeake, Va., and Trenton Simmerman of Salem, Va.; nieces and a spouse, Lorraine "Penny" and Herbert "Turk" Johnson of Groseclose, Va., Nancy Catron of Baltimore, Md., Agnes Bailey of Wellsboro, Pa., and Mary Stadler of Wellsboro, Pa.; special great-niece and her husband, Lisa H. and Luther Barnette of Dublin, Va.; a special great-nephew and his wife, Ernest "Tad" and Delta Hutton of Dublin, Va.; a great-niece, Becky Kegley of Groseclose, Va.; a great-great-niece, Emma Kegley of Groseclose, Va.; and special friends, Ola Mae Roudebush of Dublin, Va., Ted and Bonnie Albert of Dublin, Va., Hensel and Erma Underwood of Dublin, Va., and Gladys Weaver of Dublin, Va.

Elizabeth Diana Davenport Holmes 
Elizabeth Diana Davenport Holmes, 97, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Asbury Center at Birdmont, Wytheville, Va. 
Funeral services and interment will be Friday, Nov. 15, in Berwick, Pa. 
She had been a resident at Asbury Center at Birdmont since 1988. She had graduated from Bloomsburg Normal School and taught in Shickshinny Valley, Fairmont Springs and Beach Haven. She had also taught Sunday school for 35 years, played the piano and sang in the church choir at the Beach Haven United Methodist Church. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Holmes; a son, John Edward Holmes; her parents, Samuel L. and Alma Hughs Davenport; two brothers, Bill Davenport and Jack Davenport; and a sister, Harriet Miller. 
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and John Wark of York, Pa., Jean and Bob Russo of Wytheville, Va., and Carol and Lee Rockwell of Kingsport, Tenn.; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and four nieces and nephews.
