CHESAPEAKE -- Addis Broms, 60, of the 200 block of Westmoreland Court, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, in her home after a courageous, 19-year battle with cancer.

Mrs. Broms was born in Derry, Northern Ireland, the daughter of William B. and the late Maureen Campbell Donnelly. She was a self-employed child care provider, and was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church.

Mrs. Broms is survived by her husband, Charles W. Broms; a daughter, Christine Jones and her husband, Jeffrey, of Chesapeake; three sons, James B. Broms of Front Royal, Va., Kevin A. Broms and his wife, Tiffany, of Virginia Beach and Colin C. Broms and his wife, Gina, of Charleston, S.C.; three brothers, James Donnelly and his wife, Alice, of Derry, Northern Ireland, Liam Donnelly and his wife, Georgina, of Eglinton, Northern Ireland, and Joseph Donnelly and his wife, Agnes, of Claudy, Northern Ireland; two sisters, Lena Arrowood and her husband, Jay, of Jacksonville, N.C., and Moira Rinkus and her husband, Norbert, of Hazelton, Pa.; two grandsons, Adrian Quintos of Chesapeake and Kevin Broms of Virginia Beach; and two granddaughters, Heather Broms and Laurie Broms, both of Charleston.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 621 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. Father Christian Haydinger will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens.

Viewing will begin on Monday with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Sidney M. Oman Cancer Treatment Center at Chesapeake General Hospital, 736 N. CHESAPEAKE -- Claudia Simmons Fennell, 86, of the 3400 block of Woodbaugh Drive, died Oct. 29, 1999. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at New First Baptist Church, Taylorsville. Hertford County Undertakers is in charge.

John T. Griggs Sr.
CHESAPEAKE -- John Thomas Griggs Sr., 77, formerly of the 700 block of Providence Road, died Oct. 29, 1999.

Born in Nansemond County, Va., he was a retired sheet metal worker for Norfolk Naval Shipyard and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Raleigh Heights Baptist Church, Chesapeake.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Lois Odell Redd Griggs; a daughter, Cindy West and her husband, Ronnie, of Zuni, Va.; two sons, John Thomas Griggs Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Smithfield, and Donald E. Griggs and his wife, Diane, of Chesapeake; eight grandchildren, Kimberly Holbert, JoAnn Sahut and her husband, Steve, Johnny Griggs, Gene Griggs and his wife, Jeanine, Rhonda Fatooh and her husband, Rich, Chris West and his wife, Kara, Donna Bossuot and her husband, Bruce, and Bradley Griggs; eight great-grandchildren; and a dear friend, Margurite Gurkin of Chesapeake. He was blessed to have many loyal friends and family who have been so supportive during his illness.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Raleigh Heights Baptist Church, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Henry V. Napier. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. today at Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel.

Donna J. Van Faussien
CHESAPEAKE -- Donna Jean Van Faussien, 70, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, in a Chesapeake hospital.

Born in Iager, W.Va., Mrs. Van Faussien was the daughter of the late Irvin and Ruby Harrison Franklin. She was the widow of Homer E. Van Faussien Jr. and also was preceded in death by a brother, James C. Franklin. Mrs. Van Faussien was a retired cosmetologist and nurse. She was a member of Community Baptist Church.

Mrs. Van Faussien is survived by two sons, Rodney Van Faussien and his wife, Maloy, of Chesapeake and Jerry Van Faussien and his wife, Susy, of Suffolk; a sister, Peggy Guella of Roderfield, W.Va.; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Calvin Corbitt officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge.

Roberta B. Wright
CHESAPEAKE -- Missionary Mother Roberta Bailey Wright of the 2000 block of Midway Ave. went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 27, 1999, at her residence.

Mother Wright was born in Southampton County, Va., and was the daughter of the late Gene and Roberta Bailey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Lee Wright. She was retired from DePaul Hospital after 20 years of service.

Mother Wright was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Campostella for more than 50 years, where she served as a member and past president of the choir; member and past president of the Sarah Blowe Missionary Society; one of the founders of the Young Adult Choir; and member of the Usher Board. She also directed and distributed food to the needy for many years. Mother Wright was also a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was the widow of Willie Lee Wright and is survived by four daughters, Mary Darden of New Jersey, Alma Howell of Chesapeake, Cynthia Chesson and her husband, Kenneth, of Chesapeake and Wilhelmenia Wright-Harrison of Princess Anne, Md.; a son, Calvin Lee Wright and his wife, Betty, of Maryland; a brother, Willie Lee Wright Jr. and his wife, Ella, of Baltimore, Md.; nine grandchildren, Earl Howell Jr. and his wife, Myra, Kimberly Kelley and her husband, James, Christie Wright, Shelley Wright, Lynn Wright, Vincent Howell, Karlton Chesson, Kimberly Chesson and Lea Harrison; seven great-grandchildren; goddaughters, Helma German, Annie Jackson, Carolyn Haynes, Joyce Horton; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends. She was predeceased by six sisters.

A funeral will be held at noon Monday at First Baptist Church Campostella, Norfolk, by Dr. Harold Cason. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Metropolitan Funeral Service, Berkley Avenue. Family and friends will assemble at 2018 Midway, Chesapeake, one hour prior to the service for the procession.

CHESAPEAKE -- John Henry Yoder Sr., 84, of the 1500 block of Mount Pleasant Road, died Oct. 28, 1999, in a Chesapeake hospital. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. today in Kempsville Mennonite Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, is in charge.

NORFOLK -- Bessie Boffman, 93, of the 900 block of Leadenhall St. in Baltimore, Md., quietly slipped into eternal rest on Oct. 26, 1999.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Cedric Kirkland-Harris officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at Riddick Funeral Service.

NORFOLK -- Mary Ellen Corbin, 87, of the 2700 block of Woodland Ave., died Oct. 26, 1999. A funeral will be at noon Wednesday at St. Mary of The Immaculate Conception Basilicachurch. Hale Funeral Home is in charge.

Jim B. Taylor
NORFOLK -- Jim B. Taylor, 80, of the 800 block of Lesner Ave., died Oct. 30, 1999.

Mr. Taylor was a member of Colonial Heights Church of Christ for nearly 50 years. He was also a member of the Ocean View Masonic Lodge No. 335, American Legion Post No. 327 and the Disabled American Veterans, Bernard L. Hines Chapter No. 21.

He is survived by his wife, Marguerite C. Taylor; a son, Vernon J. Taylor of Norfolk; two brothers, Lloyd L. Taylor of Norfolk and Charlie B. Taylor of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Carrie T. French of Norfolk, Geraldine T. Parker of Virginia Beach and Pauline T. Duff of Mechanicsville, Va.; grandchildren, Braddock J. Taylor of Norfolk, Tyree R. Taylor of Waynesboro, Pa., and Sarah L. Mathes of Norfolk; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norview Chapel. A service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Colonial Heights Church of Christ. Burial with Masonic rites will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Thelma C. Garrett
PORTSMOUTH -- Thelma Cooper Garrett died Oct. 30, 1999, in a Chesapeake nursing home.

The widow of Henry Russell Garrett, Mrs. Garrett was born Nov. 22, 1901, in Brideburg, Ontario, Canada. She was a charter member of Cradock Presbyterian Church and a member of Constantia Chapter, National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution and Victory Chapter No. 16, Order of the Eastern Star.

She was predeceased by her son, William M. Cooper, and daughter, Jeanette C. Tuttle. She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Mary Frances Cooper; four grandchildren and their spouses, Steve and Tara Tuttle of Wheaton, Ill., John and Cindy Tuttle, Billy and Rita Cooper, all of Chesapeake, and Jane and Phil Horton of Virginia Beach; and seven great-grandchildren, Brandon, Jeffrey, John, Matthew, Erica, Heather and Megan.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Cradock Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Richard W. Lovingood. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery with an Eastern Star service. The family will be at 3252 Bruin Drive, Chesapeake. Loving Funeral Home, Churchland, is handling arrangements. Mae M. Griffin
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Mae Murphy Griffin, 90, passed on Oct. 29, 1999, in her son's home.

She was born in Old Princess Anne County, Va., and was a saleswoman at W.G. Schwartz Co. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church and ``Woodmen of the World.''

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert W. Griffin Sr., her mother, Olive Henderson, and her father, Silas Murphy. She is survived by two children, Leon O. Etheridge and Albert W. Griffin Jr. of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Irene Godfrey of Chesapeake, Elizabeth McCoy of Virginia Beach and Marjorie Sawyer of Moyock, N.C.; and a brother, Harry Murphy of Chesapeake.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today at Altmeyer Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Forest Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Fred Braswell.

Loretta D. Hensley
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Loretta D. Hensley of the 3400 block of Seagull Road died Oct. 29, 1999.

She was born in Fairfield, Conn., and was a Virginia Beach resident for the past 40 years. She was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church and a charter member of the Helicopter Alumni Association.

She was a good Navy wife for 46 years to William E. Hensley and is also survived by two sisters, Evelyn Dunn and Margaret Dunn, both of Stoneham, Mass.; a brother, Francis Dunn and his wife, Mable, of Crofton, Md.; and 11 nieces and nephews who were her pride and joy.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church by Msgr. Raymond A. Barton. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Plaza Rescue Squad.

Lore H. Silverberg
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Lore H. Silverberg, 81, entered into rest on Oct. 29, 1999.

A native of Stuttgart, Germany, she was a homemaker and the widow of Edward L. Silverberg. Lore was a member of Baylake Pines United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach. She had worked as a publications coordinator for the University of Maryland.

She is survived by her son, Bernard P. ``Bernie'' Silverberg, his wife, Sylvia, and a granddaughter, Sharon Silverberg, all of Virginia Beach, and a grandson, James B. ``Jamie'' Silverberg of Pensacola, Fla.

Interment will take place in Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltonham, Md., at a later date. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association. Altmeyer Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Wade H. Thomas Sr.
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Wade Howard Thomas Sr., 73, died peacefully at his home with his family by his side on Oct. 29, 1999. He was born in North Carolina and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Shelby Thomas, a son, Wade H. Thomas Jr., and a daughter, Amy Lou Cheaney, all of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren, Joshua David Cheaney and Katie Elizabeth Thomas; and two brothers, O.T. Thomas Jr. of Norfolk and Richard Thomas of Reston, Va.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Altmeyer Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

George W. Griffin Jr.
SUFFOLK -- George W. ``Butch'' Griffin Jr., 54, went to heaven on Friday, Oct. 29, 1999.

A native of Portsmouth, he was a master brickmason for 35 years at Sprinkle Masonry Inc. in Chesapeake. He was a member of the Floyd Byrd Hunt Club and the Brickmason's Union.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Diana Jo Boyd Griffin; three daughters, Lisa Diane Griffin of Suffolk, and Dawn Johnson and Linda Borum, both of Portsmouth; a son, Michael Boyd of Portsmouth; two sisters, Leah Brooks of Colorado and Linda Griffin of Portsmouth; two brothers, Ronnie Griffin of Portsmouth and Glenn Griffin of Durham, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Christopher, Brandon and Melissa Borum, Crystal and Heather Adams, Tiffany Drenkhahn and Michael Boyd Jr., all of Portsmouth; many nieces and nephews; and a large circle of friends who always will remember him as a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Butch's ever-present smile will be long remembered and greatly missed.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, by the Rev. Deb Jenkins. Cremation will follow the service. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday.

Christine V. Rawls
SUFFOLK -- Christine Vaughan Rawls, 70, died Oct. 30, 1999.

A native of Newport News, she was the daughter of the late Eunice Butler and John Vernon Vaughan. She was predeceased by a daughter, Frances Virginia Rawls. She had been an office manager for Brandon House Furniture.

Mrs. Rawls was a member of Western Branch Baptist Church, where she was an active member of the choir and had been a director of the Women's Missionary Union. She was also an active member of the Pickard Corale and the YMCA Chorus.

Survivors include her husband, Edward Allen Rawls Sr.; a daughter, Cynthia Rawls Bess and her husband, Phillip, of Suffolk; three sons, Edward Allen Rawls Jr. and his wife, Sue, of Richmond, John Stephen Rawls and his wife, Mary Sue, of Zuni and Timothy Wise Rawls and his wife, Darlene, of Suffolk; 10 grandchildren, Jay Rawls, Jeri Rawls, Evan Rawls, Bryan Bess, Jacob Whitley Rawls, Meaghan Elizabeth Rawls, Jackie Rawls, Allison Rawls, Margaret Rawls and Taylor Bess; four sisters, Lillian Harwood of Ocean Springs, Miss., Doris Diggs of Hampton, Cynthia Sadler of Williamsburg and Janet Moore of Poquoson; a brother, J.V. Vaughan of Hampton; a devoted cousin, Anne Wunderle; many nieces and nephews; and the staff of 3 West at Obici Hospital.

Wesley T. Clary Sr.
WAVERLY -- Wesley Thomas Clary Sr., 75, a lifelong Waverly resident, died Oct. 30, 1999, at his Coppahaunk Road home.

Mr. Clary was the son of the late Fitzhugh Lee and Annie Faison Clary. He was a member of Waverly Baptist Church and had retired after more than 20 years of service as a mechanic with the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Mr. Clary is survived by his wife, Josephine Lockey Clary, two sisters and many children, stepchildren, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Purviance Funeral Home Chapel, Wakefield, by the Rev. Brad Reynolds. Burial will be in Waverly Cemetery. MACHIPONGO -- Nedra E. Wyatt, 91, died Oct. 18, 1999. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. today in Full Gospel Church, Bayview. Fox and James Funeral Home, Eastville, is in charge.

George W. Baker
HERTFORD -- George Walter Baker, 79, of Route 4, died Oct. 29, 1999, in Chowan Hospital.

A native of Perquimans County, he was the son of the late Charlie and Mary Stallings Baker. He was a farmer. He served as an elder at Berea Church of Christ for over 50 years, a member of the Perquimans County Board of Education for 18 years and, for several years, as a Perquimans County commissioner. Mr. Baker also served on the board of directors for the Farm Bureau for over 25 years. He was a charter member of the Parksville Ruritan Club. During World War II, Mr. Baker was a chief petty officer with the U.S. Coast Guard.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Caddy Baker; a daughter, Judy Baker Vasilion of Virginia Beach; a son, Ronnie Baker and his wife, Donna, of Hertford; a brother, Lester Baker of Belvidere; two granddaughters, Renee Lackey and her husband, Eric, and Tiffany Baker; two great-granddaughters, Erika and Rebecca Lackey; and Buffy.

KILL DEVIL HILLS -- A. Kristi Bunton Thomas, 33, of Harbour View Drive, died Oct. 30, 1999, at the 2500 block of Marble St. in Newton, N.C.

She was born on Jan. 29, 1966, in Catawba County to Richard Odell Bunton and Brenda Alice Travis Dyer. She was a 1984 graduate of Hickory High School and was formerly employed by Southern Shores Realty of Southern Shores. She was a member of New Jerusalem Lutheran Church. Mrs. Thomas was predeceased by paternal grandparents, Grady and Lucille Bunton.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas J. Thomas, and two daughters, Erika Thomas and Brittany Thomas, all of the home; her father and stepmother and caregiver, Richard Odell and Donna Bunton of Newton, N.C.; her mother, Brenda Alice Travis Dyer of Henderson, Nev.; a stepbrother, Todd Clontz of Conover, N.C.; maternal grandparents, Henry and Iva Travis of Hickory, N.C.; stepgrandparents, Jim and Becky Melton of Todd, N.C.; two brothers-in-law, James H. Thomas of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Terence M. William N. Tyner
GREENVILLE -- William Nicholas Tyner, 80, died Oct. 29, 1999, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Tyner was a native of Tyner, N.C., and lived his early life in Sussex County, Va. He spent most of his adult life in Courtland, Va., where he owned and operated Tyner Logging Co. until his retirement. He was a member of Courtland United Methodist Church and had been active in the Sebrell Ruritan Club. He had made his home in Greenville since 1990 and was a member of the Greenville Golden K Kiwanis Club.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Tyner Osborne of Greenville; a sister, Virginia Dare Eure of Portsmouth; and two granddaughters.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Concord United Methodist Church Cemetery, Stoney Creek, Va. Wilkerson Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge.

Robert E. Clark
WILLIAMSBURG -- Robert Earl Clark of Williamsburg died peacefully Oct. 28, 1999, at Williamsburg Community Hospital.

He was born in the Brambleton section of Norfolk on Nov. 8, 1920. He served in the Army during World War II and met and married Jessie Walker on Aug. 11, 1945. They lived in the Willard Park section of Norfolk until 1991 and then retired and moved to Williamsburg. Earl was a Catholic and a member of Christ the King Catholic Church for over 50 years. He was an electrician by trade and retired from the city of Norfolk Electrical Affairs in 1985. Jessie and Earl were married for 54 years and were honored by their family and friends at a party for their 50th wedding anniversary in 1995.

Earl was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Julian Clark; sisters, Katherine Clark and Alma Cruse; and a brother, Lawrence Clark.

Survivors include his loving wife, Jessie W. Clark; a daughter and her husband, Florence Lynn Ward and Michael Ward of Virginia Beach; a sister, Josephine Wilson of Chesapeake; a special friend, Betty Layton; and many special nieces, nephews and friends. Grandpa will be sorely missed by his faithful granddog, Mickey, who spent many hours chasing the ball, taking naps and cuddling together.

Earl was a wonderful husband, brother, father and friend who will be missed by all. He made friends wherever he went and never complained when life got difficult. He was a joy to be around and he will always be a part of us.

Viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, Norview Ave. A Catholic Mass will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Christ the King Catholic Church; a reception will follow.

Rudolph H. Coffey Sr.
AMHERST -- Rudolph Hamilton Coffey Sr., 73, of Little Lake Lane, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, in a Charlottesville nursing home.

Born Oct. 17, 1926, in Rockfish Valley, Nelson County, he was a son of the late Samuel P. Coffey and June Hilderbrand Brower Coffey. He was a retired civil service employee with the Norfolk Naval Base. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of Clifford Baptist Church in Clifford, Va.

He is survived by his wife, Erma Nooney Coffey; a daughter, Erma M. Miles and her husband, John, of Saudi Arabia; two sons, Rudolph H. Coffey Jr. and his wife, Joyce, of Stuarts Draft and Samuel E. Coffey of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Mable A. Painter and Evelyne P. Gochenour, both of Waynesboro; a brother, John Davis Coffey Sr. of Edenbury; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Clifford Baptist Church by Dr. Michael Fitzgerald. Interment will be in Woodland Memorial Cemetery at Colleen. The family suggests that those wishing to make memorial contributions consider the Clifford Baptist Church Building Fund in Clifford, VA 24533.

William D. Craig
VALLEJO, Calif. -- Retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. William Davis Craig, formerly of Norfolk, Va., and Ocracoke, N.C., died Sept. 7, 1999, at his home in Vallejo, Calif. Born Nov. 16, 1918, he was 80.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Bakey Craig, who was the mother of their six surviving children, Susan, Denis, Lorraine, Louise, Christopher and William. He is also survived by four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his second wife, La Preal.

He will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery following a service at Fort Myer Old Post Chapel at 12:45 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 1999. Donations in his memory may be made to Habitat for Humanity, 121 Habitat St., Americus, GA 31709.

She was born in Spartanburg, S.C., and retired as a supervisor from Burlington Hotel in Washington, D.C., after 15 years. She was a former member of Little Zion Baptist Church, Chesapeake, and a volunteer at the Charity House Adult Care Residence in Chesapeake.

Survivors include a daughter, Verlicious K. Clark, and her husband, the Rev. Allen Clark Sr., of Chesapeake; two sisters, Grace Kelly and Mary Cauthen, both of Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren, Alvita Clark and Gregory Banks Jr., both of Chesapeake, and Tiffanie Flagg of Las Vegas; three great-grandchildren, Ashley Mays, Akira Mays and Aujurey Flagg, all of Las Vegas; a nephew, Barry Kelly of Washington, D.C.; a companion and special friend, Earl Royal of Chesapeake; the staff and residents of Charity House, and friends.

PORTSMOUTH -- Willie Joseph Beasley, 92, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999.

He was a native of Baltimore, Md., and attended Port Norfolk Baptist Church. He was a retired carpenter's helper at Norfolk Naval Shipyard and a veteran of World War II.

Mr. Beasley is survived by a sister, Ruth B. Barrett of Portsmouth; a nephew, William D. Barrett of Chesapeake; a great-niece; and a great-nephew.

PORTSMOUTH -- Mamie T. ``Miss Ceba'' Dawes, 72, of the 1100 block of Mount Vernon Ave., died Oct. 28, 1999, in Maryview Medical Center.

Born in Elm City, N.C., she was the widow of Columbus Dawes, and was a member of New First Baptist Church Taylorsville in Portsmouth. She retired, after 22 years as a custodian at Brighton Elementary, from the Portsmouth public schools.

Survivors include two daughters, Linnea M. Dawes of Virginia Beach and Mable D. Moseley of Portsmouth; two sisters, Annie Armstrong and Mattie Dyson, both of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

She was a native of Lebanon, Va., and was a retired supervisor from Maryland Undercoating. She was a member of Fairview Heights Baptist Church, a Lifenet volunteer, and a heart transplant recipient.

James Jr. of Smithfield, Va., and Michael James of Carrollton, Va.; two brothers, Jack Carlton of De Soto, Texas, and Scottie Carlton of Springfield, Mo.; and six grandchildren, Tracey, Julie, Jeremiah, John, Ashley and Corey.

She was a native of Ahoskie, N.C., and was the widow of Monroe N. Shropshire. She was an active member of Alexander Baptist Church, Portsmouth Senior Citizens, Beazley Senior Center, and Esther Chapter No. 37 O.E.S.

Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy L. Price of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Janet L. Woodruff of Rochester, N.Y.; a son, Sidney L. Hughes of Portsmouth; a stepson, Steven Shropshire of Auburn, Wash.; a sister, Mary Blow of Portsmouth; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Harrell; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Laylor was born in Norfolk. She was the widow of Thomas S. Laylor.

Mrs. Laylor was a member of Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Norfolk, where she was on the Altar Guild. She was a graduate of Longwood College, past president of the Episcopal Home in Norfolk, and a member of PEO Sorority.

Survivors include a daughter, Anne Iredell, and her husband, John, of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; and a grandson, Thomas W. Iredell of Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Richard H. Williams Sr.
ELIZABETH CITY -- Richard Hewitt Williams Sr., 75, of the 400 block of Firetower Road, died at his residence Saturday evening, Oct. 30, 1999.

He was a lifelong resident of the Newland Township in Pasquotank County. He was a faithful husband, loving father and caring friend. Mr. Williams was the son of the late Frank and Bertie Hewitt Williams, and the husband of 56 years to Ruth Stallings Williams. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 1980 after 33 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was an active and dedicated member of Newland United Methodist Church and was treasurer of the Newland-Providence Ruritan Club. Mr. Williams served as a member of the board of trustees for the Albemarle Hospital from 1987 until 1994, and was chairman of the board in 1994.

Besides his wife, Mr. Williams is survived by two daughters, Lynne W. Pike and her husband, Jimmy, of Elizabeth City and Susan W. Morgan and her husband, Glen, of High Point, N.C.; three sons, Richard H. Williams Jr. and his wife, Sara, of Elizabeth City, Dwight F. Williams and his wife, Joni, of Prince Frederick, Md., and Martin K. Williams and his wife, Beth, of Smithfield, N.C.; two sisters, Mary Sawyer of Virginia Beach and Mildred Sharber of Elizabeth City; a brother, Frank Williams of Chesapeake; eight grandchildren, Kevin Williams, Chris Williams, Kiley Pike, Megan Williams, Jonas Williams, Josh Morgan, Ellen Williams and Keith Williams; and two great-grandchildren, Jared Williams and Jessie Mae Williams. A sister, Grace McLaurin, preceded him in death.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the Koen Cemetery by the Revs. Ray Warren Jr. and Alan Gibson. Immediately following the service, the family will greet friends and relatives in the Newland United Methodist Church's Fellowship Hall, and at other times at his residence on Firetower Road.

Robert E. Clark
WILLIAMSBURG -- Robert Earl Clark of Williamsburg died peacefully Oct. 28, 1999, at Williamsburg Community Hospital.

He was born in the Brambleton section of Norfolk on Nov. 8, 1920. He served in the Army during World War II and met and married Jessie Walker on Aug. 11, 1945. They lived in the Willard Park section of Norfolk until 1991 and then retired and moved to Williamsburg. Earl was a Catholic and a member of Christ the King Catholic Church for over 50 years. He was an electrician by trade and retired from the city of Norfolk Electrical Affairs in 1985. Jessie and Earl were married for 54 years and were honored by their family and friends at a party for their 50th wedding anniversary in 1995.

Earl was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Julian Clark; sisters, Katherine Clark and Alma Cruse; and a brother, Lawrence Clark.

Survivors include his loving wife, Jessie W. Clark; a daughter and her husband, Florence Lynn Ward and Michael Ward of Virginia Beach; a sister, Josephine Wilson of Chesapeake; a special friend, Betty Layton; and many special nieces, nephews and friends. Grandpa will be sorely missed by his faithful granddog, Mickey, who spent many hours chasing the ball, taking naps and cuddling together.

Earl was a wonderful husband, brother, father and friend who will be missed by all. He made friends wherever he went and never complained when life got difficult. He was a joy to be around and he will always be a part of us.

Viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, Norview Ave. A Catholic Mass will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Christ the King Catholic Church; a reception will follow.
