Mr. George Douglas Thornton, 84 of Fredericksburg, died Saturday, November 15, 2003 at Mary Washington Hospital. George served in the USArmy for two years assigned the the office of Strategic Services. He later went to work for the Central Intellegence Agency as a procurement contracting officer for 33 years. He retired in 1973 with an honor "Career Intelligence Medal." He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ft. Pierce Florida, the Central Intellegence Retirement Assoc. and the Office of Strategic Service Society. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Mildred Powell Thornton, a daughter and son-in-law; Cheryl T. and Howard L. Prince of Hartwood; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth K. Thornton of Warrenton; a sister, Martha T. Collins of Rocky Mount, NC; two grand-daughters, Stephanie L. Thornton of Arlington, Melanie A. Prince of Hartwood; three grandsons, Patrick W. Thornton and wife Tamara of Burke, George J. Prince of Hartwood and Ross H. Prince of Asheville, NC. He is preceded in death by his son George D. Thornton, Jr. The family will receive friends at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, Fredericksburg on Tuesday, November 18, 2003 from 7:00 to 9:00pm. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday at 12:00pm with the Rev. Scott Erwin officiating. Interment will follow in Quantico National Cemetery. Helen Virginia Williams, 61, of Woodford died Friday, August 22, 2003 at Mary Washington Hospital. She is survived by two sons, Otis Walker Williams and Ronnie James Williams, both of Woodford; four sisters, Janie Conley Dean of Harrisonburg, Marie Conley Fuchs of Elkton, Doris Conley Hilldrup of Spotsylvania and Karen Conley Medley of Stafford; six brothers, Earl Conley of Sparta, George Conley of Fredericksburg, Junior Morris of Caroline County, Raymond Conley of Harrisonburg, Otha Lee Conley of Elkton and Clee Conley of Elkton; two grandchildren, Danny and Britney Chinault of Spotsylvania and numerous nieces and nephews. Brenda Kay Smoot Gosling, 38, of Culpeper died Saturday, August 2, 2003, at Culpeper Regional Hospital. She was born August 26, 1964 in Culpeper to the late David Owen Smoot and Gladys Roberta Settle Smoot. Mrs. Gosling is survived by her daughter, Samantha Jo Gosling of Culpeper, three sisters, Linda S. Buraker of Culpeper, Doris S. Batiste of Culpeper and Tina L. Caylor of Louisiana and three brothers, Larry W. Smoot of Ruckersville, Stevie L. Smoot of Culpeper and John R. Caylor of Culpeper. Additional survivors include four nieces and two nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David E. Gosling and one brother, Jerry O. Smoot. The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper. Mr. Isaac Eubank, 79, of Fredericksburg went home to be with the Lord on September 25th. He was a longtime member of Eastland United Methodist Church, where he was active on several commities before his illness. He retired from the Virginia Department of Highways with over thirty years of service. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Hazel D. Eubank; a daughter and her husband, Phyllis and Deane Napier; two sons and their wives, Milton and Tammy Eubank and William and Ritha Eubank all of Fredericksburg; two grandsons, Mark Stephens and Mitchell Eubank and one great granddaughter, Faith Stephens. A funeral service will be held on Monday, Sept. 27, 2003 at Eastland United Methodist Church at 1p.m. with the Rev. Jerry Vaiden and Tommy Shackelford officiating. John Foster LeKander, 51, of Sperryville died Thursday, August 7, 2003, at his residence. He was born July 30, 1952 in Arlington, VA to the late Gilbert LeKander and Carol Foster LeKander. Mr. LeKander is survived by his wife, Ann Britto LeKander of Sperryville, his stepmother, Mary LeKander of Manassas, four stepchildren, Hank Beaver of Warrenton, Ann Renee' and her husband, James of Falls Church, Brian Beaver of Flinthill and Daniel Beaver and his wife, Kim of Marshall. Additional survivors include two grandchildren, two stepbrothers, Rick and John Squires, three stepsisters, Becky Squire, Judy Strachan and Nancy Castello, his cousin, Dale Olsen and his wife, Nancy of Arlington and a host of other family and friends. Mrs. Ethel Louise Mastin, 81, of Fredericksburg died on Friday, Sept. 26, 2003 at her home. She was born in Spotsylvania, Virginia to the late Annie and George Mastin. She was a member of Hebron Baptist Church and the Eagles Lodge. Mrs. Mastin is survived by her son, Eddie Mastin of Fredericksburg and a daughter, Eleanor Carr of Spotsylvania; a sister, Mrytle Sliger of Manassas Park. She retired from the Newtown- CPC Forms manufacturing company at the age of 78. She is survived by her son; Gordon D. Bell of Spotsylvania; a sister-in-law, Sandy Bell of Spotsylvania and a niece, Catherine Bell. She is preceded in death by her husband William D. Bell; a son, William W. Bell and nephew, Adam Bell. Edna L. Riley, 93, of Culpeper died Thursday, October 30, 2003, at Culpeper Regional Hospital. She was born December 20, 1909 in Washington, DC to the late Charles S. Mills and Lillian E. Mellen Mills. Mrs. Riley retired after forty-four years of service as an operator with C&P Telephone Company. She was a member of Culpeper Baptist Church, American Association of Retired Persons, and the Telephone Pioneers of America. Survivors include one nephew, Donald E. Mills and his wife, Delores of Brandywine, MD, two great nephews, Glen E. Mills of Brandywine, MD and Michael Ray Mills of Lusby, MD, three great great nieces, Heather Mills of Mechanicsville, MD and Amanda and Megan Mills of Lusby, MD, and two great great great nephews, Jessie and Michael. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Riley was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert A. Ball, her second husband, Robert C. Riley, two brothers, Russell S. Mills and Charles E. Mills, and two nephews, Ronald C. Mills and Robert A. Mills. A funeral service will be held Monday, November 3, at 11 a.m. at Found and Sons Chapel with Rev. John S. Farrar officiating. Anna Bruce Swindler, 97, of Memphis, Tennesse, formerly of Culpeper, Virginia died Saturday, September 27, 2003, at St. Frances Hospital in Memphis, Tennesse following a brief illness. Sh3 was born in Rappahannock County on April 29, 1906, to the late Roscoe C. Bruce and Annie Gore Bruce. Survivors include one son, Thomas R. Swindler and his wife, Heide of Culpeper, one daughter, Linda Swindler of Memphis, TN, one daughter-in-law, Alice "Bonnie" Swindler of Florida, three grandchildren, Corina Swindler Flora and her husband, Mark, Thomas Swindler and his wife, Vicki, and Michael Swindler all of Culpeper, and one great granddaughter, Shania Flora of Harrisonburg. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell B. Swindler, one son, Robert Swindler, one brother, Jack W. Bruce, and one sister, Frances Bruce Blankenbaker. Elizabeth Bane Goodman James, 75, of Brandy Station died Wednesday, September 24, 2003, at Culpeper Regional Hospital. She was born July 10, 1928 in Smythe County, VA. Mrs. James was a member of Amissville United Methodist Church. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, and enjoyed playing games with family and friends and especially bingo and croquet. Mrs. James is survived by four children, Emily Ellis of Culpeper, Anne Blankenship and her husband, Jr. of Remington, Robert Garland James of Viewtown and Bill James of The Plains. Additional survivors include a sister, Jane Varney of Corpus Christy, TX, eleven grandchildren, Bobby Ellis, Andy Ellis, Cindy Testerman, Joy Blankenship, Karen Ellis, Stephanie Staats, Danny James, Angie Brown, Kenny James, Brian James and Matthew James, and thirteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Goodman, her mother, Cynthia Lee Goodman, her husband, Robert J. James, her three brothers, John, Thomas "Bud" and James P. She was born November 29, 1921 in Rappahannock County to the late Charles Wesley Sisk and Clara E. Leake Sisk. She was a lifelong member of the Culpeper Free Methodist Church. Mrs. Jacobs is survived by her husband of fifty-eight years, James Edward Jacobs of Culpeper, one brother, Charles Wesley "Junior" Sisk of Panama City, FL, one sister, Catherine Baldwin of Culpeper and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Ann Sisk Finneyfrock. Nellie May Guinn Bywaters Settle, 99, of Culpeper, died Saturday, October 18, 2003 at the Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community. She was born January 17, 1904 in Culpeper to the late Curry Thomas and Susie Inskeep Guinn. Mrs. Settle was a member of Culpeper Baptist Church and a resident of the Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community. She opened the first Post Office in Chantilly and formerly served as Deputy Clerk of the Circuit Court in Culpeper. She is survived by a brother, Claude Inskeep Guinn and his wife, Mary Francys Seward Guinn, of Culpeper, and several nieces and nephews and their families. Mrs. Settle is preceded in death by her first husband, Franklin Bywaters, and her second husband, Biedler Settle. Four brothers also preceded her in death, William Carleton, J. Russel, Curry Thomas, Jr. and Johnson O. Guinn. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Culpeper Baptist Church with Dr. Ted Fuson officiating. Interment will follow at Culpeper Masonic Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Florence Weir Dewey, 81, of Locust Grove died Thursday, December 04, 2003, at Fair Oaks Hospital. She was born July 4, 1922 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the late Charles Prescott Weir and Anne Manning Weir. Mrs. Dewey was very devoted to her family. She enjoyed playing bridge and was active in many community events at Lake of the Woods. Survivors include four children, Sharon Hutto and her husband, Manning of Oldsmar, Florida, Charles Stephen Dewey and his wife, Bobbi of Louisville, Kentucky, Michael Dewey and his wife, Elaine of Centreville, VA and Kathleen Dunn and her husband, Michael of Locust Grove, VA. She is also survived by one brother, John Weir of Linthicum, MD, two sisters, Erna Whaler of Columbia, MD and Dorothy Patch of Alexandria, VA and six grandchildren, Lisa, Laura, Leslie, Katarina and Alyssa Dewey and Jason Kahmoreei. Sarah J. McDevitt Carpenter, age 97, died Monday, December 8, 2003, at Walnut Cove Health Care Center, in Walnut Cove, North Carolina. She was born on April 23, 1906, in Potts Creek, VA, a daughter of the late John H. and Salome Campbell McDevitt. She was married to Gorie L Carpenter, Sr., in Clarend, VA on October 20, 1925. She was a member of Stevensburg Baptist Church, the UDC, and the Homemakers Club. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa Jane in 1994. Surviving are her son, Gorie L. Carpenter, Jr., of Kernersville, NC; two grandsons, Anthony Lee Carpenter and Andrew B. Carpenter both of Kernersville; three granddaughters, Regina Haudley of King, Pamela Partin of Ruckersville, VA, and Donna Catolona of Standardsville, VA. Lester and her husband, Thomas of Culpeper, two children, Joseph Barrett Jones and Coral Skye Jones both of Culpeper and their mother, Melanie Little of Culpeper. Paul Thomas Herbert, 55, of Brightwood, died Thursday, November 27, 2003 at his residence. He was born on July 20, 1948 in Washington, DC to the late Warren John and Lillian Nalley Herbert. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Linda Ann Herbert, three daughters, Paula Marie Herbert of Ammisville, Joyce Ann Herbert of Brightwood, and Edith Doris Tucker and her husband, Charles "Chuck" of Front Royal, two sons, Robert Lee Herbert and his wife, Gena of Rapidan, and Paul Thomas Herbert, Jr. of Brightwood, six children he felt to be his own, Lewis Fisher, Bill Rudosovich, Donnie Moscip, Joanie Bright, Bobby Lynn and Travis Lynn.
