Bernice Mae Ayers, 74, of Cana, died September 1, 1999, in North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, NC. She is survived by three daughters, Susan Presnell of Sparta, NC, Barbara Jean Hawks of Cana, Helen Coakley of Massachusetts; a son, Sherman Dale Sutphin of Greensboro, NC; a sister, Josephine Walls of Hillsville; a brother, Leonard Caviness of Hillsville; 10 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren. Funeral was September 3 at 2 p.m. in Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel conducted by the Rev. Dewey Felts and the Rev. Bobby Akers. Burial was in the Independence Cemetery at Fancy Gap.

Ronnie Harden Aldred, 47, of Galax, died Nov. 19, 2000, in Galax. He was born in Grayson County on Feb. 11, 1953, to Harden and Dolly Marie Ring Aldred. He is survived by a daughter, Melissa Ruth Cain of Hillsville; mother, Dolly Marie Aldred of Galax; sister, Lois Lundy of Fries; brothers, James Aldred and Billy Aldred both of Galax; two grandchildren. A grave side service was held Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. in Monta Vista Cemetery. Roger Redd officiated.

Dorothy Velma Buckner, 89, of Willis, died March 11, 2001, in Eldercare of Hillsville. She is survived by daughters and son-in-law, Blanche and Seldon Quesenberrry of Willis, Rosie Stillwell of Hillsville; brother, Clark Quesenberry of Dugspur; one grandson, two great-grandsons, one step granddaughter, three step great-grandsons. Funeral was March 14 at 11 a.m. in Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel conducted by Elder Kenneth Hopkins and the Rev. Danny Phillips. Burial was in the Quesenberry Family Cemetery.

Minister Mary Saunders Bruce, 59, of Pulaski, formerly of Carroll County,died Oct. 4, 2001, in Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. She is survived by sisters Lucille Hill of Norfolk, Iola Phipps of Galax; brother, Frank R. Saunders of Texas. Funeral was Oct. 9 at Mt. Zion Holiness Church. The Rev. Raymond Brown, Jr. officiated. Burial was in Bethany Church Cemetery.

Jack Warren Akers, 80, of Hillsville, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2002, in Twin County Regional Hospital. Mr. Akers was a former employee of Norfolk and Western Railway and had a 35 year career in insurance sales. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church for 30 years. He was also a former Mayor of Hillsville and was a candidate for this year's office. Mr. Akers was preceded in death by his parents, Jake and Dorcas Roberts Akers; a sister, Mary Thompson; three brothers, Emmet, Buster and John Akers and a son, Wilbur Akers. He is survived by his wife, Frances Akers of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Claudine and Ronnie Hinkle of Alderson, WV, Shirley and David Bays and Brenda and Carl Harmon all of Hillsville; son and daughter-in-law, Woody and Jean Purdy of Falls Church, VA; two sisters, Aeiretta Campana of Cleveland, OH and Gladys Zeek of Orlando, FL; a sister-in-law, Avonell Akers of Stuart, FL; seven grandchildren and spouses, Ronald Hinkle, Jr., Rhonda and David Combs, Adam and Cndy Joyce, Dustin Harmon, Kim and Rob Boswell, Dr. Debra Bays, Billie Jo and Mike Sharp; 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral was Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Hillsville with the Rev. Ramon Torres and the Rev. David Bays officiating. Burial was in the Wilkinson Memorial Cemetery. The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday, April 15 at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel. 

Olen Rush Edwards, 59, of Riner, formerly of Hillsville, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2002. He devoted 37 years of his life as an Engineering Technician with the Virginia Department of Transportation and spent four years in the United States Air Force. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Hillsville. Olen was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling and spending time in the woods. He is preceded in death by his father, Gleaves "Pete" Edwards. Surviving are his wife, Thelma (Tabby) Stevens Thomas Edwards; his mother, Dorothy Edwards of Hillsville; a sister, Merle Goad of Hillsville; children and spouses, Lisa and Rodney Nearbin, USAF, Speicher, Germany, Angie and Bryan Cridlin of Christiansburg, Kimberly Thomas of Sterling, VA and Brian Thomas of Roanoke; four beloved grandchildren, David and Kristen Nearbin and Jacob and Aaron Cridlin; a very special nephew Garry Goad of Woodlawn; beloved niece and spouse, Kathy and Bobby Nester of Hillsville; great-niece and nephew Danielle and Robbie Nester; broth -in-law and spouse, Norman and Shirley Stevens of Riner and many other relatives and special friends. He had many friends and relatives who prayed, visited and sent cards during his short illness. Thanks to everyone for their kindness. A special thanks to Dr. Leslie Badillo for his time and gentle caring. Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 13 at the Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg with the Rev. Monroe Hedrick officiating. Interment was in Sunset Cemetery. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 12 at the funeral home. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Good Samaritan Hospice, Roanoke, the American Cancer Society or the Christiansburg Rescue Squad. 

Junior Isaiah Martin, 77, of Pulaski, died April 13, 2002. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry James and Teena Martin of Draper, Michael Glenn and Donna Martin of Radford; one brother, Johnny Martin of Norfolk; one sister, India McNeely of Barren Springs; four grandchildren, one great-granddaughter. Funeral was April 15 at 1 p.m. in Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel conducted by Pastor Carson Linkous. Burial was in the Hardy-Jenkins Cemetery. Military Rites were conducted by Hillsville VFW Post 1115. 

Floyd Elmer Midkiff, 90, of Hillsville, died April 9, 2002 in Grayson Nursing & Rehab Center, Independence. He is survived by his wife, Tiny Midkiff of the home; step son and spouse, Donald and Betty Guynn of Sparta, NC; step daughter, Betty Jean Billings of South Carolina; three step grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren. A grave side service was held April 11 at 1 p.m. at the Hardy-Jenkins Cemetery with the Rev. Grover Guynn officiating. 

Mary Ruth Monday, 77, of Galax, died April 9, 2002 in Twin County Regional Hospital. She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Wilma and Wayne Poole, Jeana and Kevin Beckner all of Independence, Zella and Ronnie Coulson of Hillsville, Yvonne and Pete Cox of Galax; sisters, Jesse Easter of Woodlawn, Imogene Vass of Martinsville, Shelby Jean Goodson of Lowgap, NC; ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren. Funeral was April 11 at 2 p.m. in East Galax Baptist Church with Pastor Rick Cassell and the Rev. Benny Haga officiating. Burial was in Monta Vista Cemetery with Auxiliary Rites by the Ladies Auxiliary Hillsville VFW Post 1115. 

Thomas Hilly Morris, 89, of Galax, died April 12, 2002, in Twin County Regional Hospital. He is survived by daughters, Betty Lou Morris Johnson and Sarah Morris Funk both of Radford; sons, John Thomas Morris of Valdese, NC and Frank Edward Morris of Galax; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren. Funeral was April 21 at 2 p.m. in First Christian Church conducted by the Rev. Carl Bean. Burial was in Felts Memorial Cemetery. 

Infant Kierra LeAnn Rhudy of Ivanhoe, died April 12, 2002 in Twin County Regional Hospital. She is survived by her parents, Scott and Casey Rhudy of Ivanhoe; half brother, Colby Scott Rhudy of Sylvatus; paternal grandparents, Ellen and Marshall Rhudy of Fries; paternal great-grandmother, Betty Funk of Fries; maternal grandparents, Lynn and Jimmy Sonner of Max Meadows; Maternal great-grandparents, Ted and Elizabeth Turner Jr. of Max Meadows, Virginia P. Waller of Pulaski. A grave side service was held April 14 in the Liberty Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Rance Edwards officiated. 

Minnie Lucille Young, 80, of Hillsville, died April 10, 2002 in Forsyth Memorial Hospital, Winston-Salem, NC. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Sue Young of Elyria, OH; mother, Jessie May Henley of Hillsville; brothers, Terry Henley of King, NC, Jerry Henley of State Road, NC; sisters, Grace Vaught of Asheville, NC, Dolly Smith of State Road, NC; four grandchildren. Funeral was April 15 at 11 a.m. at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel with the Rev. Danny Henley officiating. Burial was in Pleasant View Church Cemetery, State Road, NC.

Oley Anderson Bishop, 91, of Galax, passed away Sat., May 10, 2003. He is survived by his wife: Blanche Bishop of the home; daughters & sons-in-law: Alice & Kenneth Pettit, Beloit, OH; Brenda & Bobby Cline, Iaeger, WV; Barbara & David Danley, Raleigh, NC; son: Michael Bishop, Galax; sister: Dessie Smith, Columbus, OH; nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Emeline Sizemore Boyd, age 80 of Free Union Road, Meadows of Dan, passed away Sun., May 11, 2003 at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart. She was born in Grayson Co. on March 5, 1923 to the late Joseph & Ellen Sizemore. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Boyd was preceded in death by her husband, Orville R. Boyd and several brothers & sisters. She was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Boyd is survived by five sons: Roger L. Boyd, Bassett; Robert W. Boyd, Kenneth Boyd (and wife, Evelyn), Jerry D. Boyd and Gary Boyd, all of Meadows of Dan; three grandsons: Allen, Greg, & Thomas Boyd; one granddaughter: Leanne Martin; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Boyd were held Tues., May 13, 11 a.m., Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Rev. J.R. Shelton officiating. Burial followed in Patrick Memorial Gardens. James Howard Caudill, 75, of Woodlawn, passed away Mon., May 5, 2003 at Twin County Regional Hospital. He is survived by his wife: Eva Sue Caudill, Woodlawn; dau-ghter & son-in-law: Jeanne & Mike Webb, Galax; sons & daughter-in-law: Terry & Wilma Caudill, Woodlawn; Tim & Patty Caudill, Fries; son & fiance: J.D. Caudill & Christy Whitaker, Hillsville; sister: Una Lee Ray, Southerland; half sisters: Juanita Miller, Greensboro, NC; Shirley Wilson, Archdale, NC; Pearl Whitt, Pulaski; half brother: Ray Caudill, New Haven, IN; & five grandchildren. Billy Gene Clyburn, 72, of Galax, passed away Wed., May 7, 2003 at Waddell Nursing Home. He is survived by his daughter & son-in-law: Kim & Dan Campbell of Galax & one granddaughter. A graveside service was held Thurs., May 8, 2 p.m., Fries Cemetery. Rev. John Williams officiated.

Roy Herbert Fowler, 74, of Wytheville, passed away Fri., May 9, 2003. He is survived by his wife Irene and his five sons: Michael, Thomas, David, Anton, & Charles, two daughters-in-law: Kathy & Judy, four granddaughters, five great grandchildren and two brothers: Doug Fowler, Wytheville, & Arnold Fowler, Riner. Funeral services were Mon., May 12, 11 a.m., Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Pastor Steven P. Ridenhour officiated. Interment was in West End Cemetery. Vera Layne Huff Isom, 75, of Fries, passed away Fri., May 9, 2003. Alberta Williams Smythers, 91, of Woodlawn, passed away Sun., May 4, 2003 at her home. Ronnie Dale South, 46, of Hillsville, passed away Thurs., May 8, 2003. He is survived by his mother: Ila Fern Ward of Galax. Emily Joan Boyer Taylor (Jo), as she was affectionately known to her family & friends, of Lynchburg, former-ly of Carroll County, entered into the splendor & bliss of heaven on Sat., May 10, 2003. Born July 2, 1937 in Carroll County, she was the daughter of Imogene (Jean) Mabe Nester and the late Early Berkley Nester. She was a member of the Hyland Heights Baptist Church. She is survived by her mother of Hillsville; her loving daughter: Lisa Boyer, Rustburg; her sons: Douglas & Robbie Boyer, Lynchburg, & Army Staff Sgt. Richard G. Boyer from 1st Brigade, 101st Screaming Eagles of Ft. Campbell, KY, and his wife, Michele; and the "loves of her life", her two precious grandsons: Forrest Glenn & Hunter Scott Boyer, also of Ft. Campbell, KY. In addition, she is survived by her four sisters: Nancy Beasley, Hillsville; Betty Modell, Bloomfield Hills, MI; Mary Baumgardner, Lynchburg; & Dorothy Bolt, Willis; special friend: Aubrey Lawhorne. Jo was first and foremost, a wonderful grandmother who delighted greatly in her two grandsons. (She was noted for spoiling them.) Growing up in Carroll County, she was always the quintessential older sister to her four siblings. She was a lover of nature. As a young girl, she spent many hours on the hillsides of the family farm in Southwest Virginia with her artist's sketchpad, capturing the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Jo had a penchant for spectacular sunsets and the vibrant colors of wildflowers. She was especially close to her only daughter, Lisa, who was her chief caregiver and greatest supporter through her valiant battle with her illness. Family visitation was held at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel from 6-8 p.m., Mon., May 12. Funeral services were held Tues., 11 a.m. at the chapel with burial in the Coulson Cemetery in Hillsville with Rev. Russell Payne officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Coulson Church of the Brethren Building Fund, 4127 Coulson Church Road, Hillsville.

Freda P. Adams, 54, of Martinsville, passed away Tues., May 20, 2003 at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC. She is survived by her husband: Jesse D. "Danny" Adams of the home; daughter & son-in-law: Julie & Robert Kitzmiller, daughter: Leslie Adams, all of Martinsville; stepson: Jesse Adams, II; sisters: Irene Crigger & Wilma Frazier, both of Austinville; brother: Charles Primm, Joliet, IL; and three grandchildren. Ricky L. McGee, 39, of Woodlawn, passed away Sat., May 24, 2003 at Wythe County Community Hospital. Lillie Lee Patton, 107, of Galax, passed away Wed., May 21, 2003 at Waddell Nursing Home in Galax.
