Hattie Ruth Anderson
Hattie Ruth Anderson, 82, a resident of Annaburg Manor, Manassas, died
Monday, June 8, 1998, at Prince William Hospital.
Chapel services and interment will be held Thursday, June 11, at 3:30
p.m. at the Grandview Memory Gardens, Bluefield, with the Rev. Robert Cook
officiating.
She was born June 22, 1915, in Ceres, a daughter of the late James
and Lilly Cassell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hurley Anderson; and her
son, Robert "Rob" Harmon.
Survivors include her daughter, Wanda Tedder of Manassas; three sisters,
Janie McGuire of Bluefield, W.Va., Bertie Cregger of Roanoke, and Irene
Cassell of Ceres; a brother, Harry Cassell of Ceres; and four grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren.

Harold Carl Arney, 75, of Bluefield, W.Va., died Saturday, May 30,
1998, at his residence.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 1, at 4 p.m. at the Mercer
Funeral Home Chapel in Bluefield, W.Va., with the Rev. Nancy H. White officiating.
Interment followed in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Courthouse Road, Princeton,
W.Va.
Born May 2, 1923, in Canebrake, W.Va., he was a son of the late Dallas
Arney and Mary Cassell Arney. He was a mechanic for Rish Equipment Co.
for 29 years and a resident of Bluefield, W.Va., most of his life. He was
a member of the Methodist faith.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clifford Arney, Richard
Arney, and Rector Arney; and two sisters, Ruby Arney and Geneva Perdue.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Bobbie J. Ramey Arney of the
home; a son and daughter-in-law, Carl D. and Sharon Arney of Bland; two
brothers and sisters-in-law, Bernard and Betty Arney of Brushfork, W.Va.,
and Paul and Ruth Arney of Bluefield, W.Va.; a sister and brother-in-law,
Phyllis A. and John Oliver of Bluefield, W.Va.; and four grandchildren,
David G. Arney of Bluefield, W.Va., Samantha A. Arney, William B. Arney,
and Tyler L. Arney, all of Bland.

Elizabeth Bird Kincheloe
Elizabeth Bird Kincheloe, 88, of Johnson City, Tenn., died Friday,
may 22, 1998, at Johnson City Medical Center.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 26, at 11 a.m. at the Oak Hill
funeral Home Chapel in Kingsport, Tenn., with Pastor David Castle and her
family officiating. Interment followed in the Oakhill Cemetery.
Born in Bland, she was the tenth of 11 children born to the late George
Thomas and Carrie Burton Bird. She graduated form Bland High School and
received a teaching certificate from Radford State College. She taught
three years in Bland where she met and married her principal, Joe L. Kincheloe
Sr. Married women in the early 1930s were not allowed to teach in Virginia,
so she took a business course and after moving to Tennessee she worked
for the Tennessee Eastman Company for seven years. She returned to teaching
later in life. She taught at Kingsley Elementary in Sullivan County, Tenn.,
for many years until her retirement in 1971. Since 1983 she had lived in
Kingsport, Tenn., Johnson City, Tenn., Clemson, S.C., and Colonial Hill
Retirement Center in Tenn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe L. Kincheloe Sr.; and
a daughter, Joan Elizabeth Kincheloe.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Joe L. Jr. and Dr.
Shirley R. Steinberg Kincheloe, of State College, Pa.; four grandchildren
and a spouse, Ian and Christine Steinberg, Meghann Dahl, Chaim Steinberg,
and Bronwyn Steinberg; her companion, Hazel Harless of Johnson City, Tenn.;
and friends, Helen Sergent, Helen Rouse, and Katherine Tracy, all of Colonial
Hill Retirement Center

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Dan Foglesong

and James Foglesong of Elizabethton, Tenn.; and eight great-grandchildren.

Stanley M. Umbarger, 55, of Route 1, Bastian, died Thursday, June 11,
1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 13, at 2 p.m., at the Red
Oak Union Church with the Rev. G.L. East officiating. Entombment followed
in the Red Oak Cemetery in Ceres.
He was a member of the Dayspring Church in Wytheville.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jonas Jackson Umbarger.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Burge Umbarger of the home; a daughter,
Tessa Umbarger Minter of Powhatan; two sisters, Starr Umbarger Bivens of
Wytheville, and Enid Umbarger of Bluefield; a brother, Owen Henry Umbarger
of Tazewell; his mother, Brooksie Neel Umbarger of Bastian; and two grandchildren,

Estelle Hoge Thompson, 82, of Route 1, Bland, died Friday, June 12,
1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Shupe, the Rev. Hutzel, and the Rev.
Meadows officiating. Interment followed in the family cemetery in Bland.
He was born in Bland County, a son of the late Charles Monroe and Mary
Texas Repass Thompson.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Patterson Thompson of the home;
three sons, C.M. Thompson, James Thompson and Tommy Thompson, all of Bland;
six daughters, Sue Grassman of Charlotte, N.C., Mary Margaret Connell of
Ivanhoe, Judy Brunk of Bland; Joyce Clemens of Wytheville; Janet Pennington
of Wytheville, and Betsy Mutter Brunk of Ceres; two brothers, Paul Thompson
of Salem, and Jack Thompson of Marion, N.C.; three sisters, Helen Caldie
and Gladys Faulk, both of Newport News, and Letha Olson of Waverly; and
11 grandchildren.

will follow in the Bland Cemetery.
She was born in Pulaski.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Goins. Survivors include
a sister, Willie Hinkley of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Eula Louise Morrison Thomas, 68, of Max Meadows, died Wednesday, July
1, 1998, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

was in the West End Cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Roncie P. and
Eula Fisher Morrison.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Porter Thomas.

Thelma Mitchell Peery Davis, 85, of North Tazewell, died Monday, July
13, 1998, at a Tazewell hospital.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 16, at 2 p.m. at Central
Lutheran Church, Burke's Garden, with the Rev. Joe Shumate officiating.
Burial will follow at the Central Cemetery.
Born Sept. 3, 1912, at Bluefield, W.Va., she was a daughter of the
late James Taylor Mitchell and Eunice Mustard Mitchell. She was retired
from Tazewell County Public Schools after 30 years of teaching in Bland,
Burke's Garden and Tazewell areas. She was a member of the Central Lutheran
Church, Burke's Garden.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Stephen Alfred Peery;
and a sister, Sadie Mitchell Bane.
Survivors include her second husband, Jack Davis of Bluefield; one
son and daughter-in-law, Stephen Harry and Linda Hypes Peery; a grandson,
Stephen Seth Peery; a granddaughter, Joanna Lynn Peery of Burke's Garden;
a nephew and his wife, Joseph and Kim Bane; great-nephews and great-niece,
Andy Bane, Jacob Bane, and Shalyn Bane, all of Radford; three stepsons,
Kirk Davis of Tazewell, Gene Davis of Broadway, and Glen Davis of Haymarket;
a stepdaughter, Jane Crowgey of Wytheville; numerous step-grandchildren,
step-great-grandchildren, and step-great-great-grandchildren; and a dear
friend, Ruth Wilson of Tazewell.

an automobile accident.

Mitchell United Methodist Church Cemetery.
She was born in Welch, W.Va.
She was preceded in death by her father, James Floyd Hurley.

Herbert Wayne "Pappy" Nunn, 88, of Montvale, formerly of Bland, died
Thursday, July 16, 1998, at the Oakwood Manor Nursing Home in Bedford.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 19, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry
Funeral Home Chapel in Bland. Interment followed in the Nunn Family Cemetery
in Bland.
He was born in Bland, a son of the late Tommy and Louella Miller Nunn,
and was retired from the Chrysler Corp.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maudie Ella Nunn.
Survivors include a son, Vernon W. Nunn Sr. of Moneta; a stepdaughter,
Oletta N. Stump of Midlothian; a twin brother, Henry P. Nunn of Bland;
a special friend, Danny W. Garrett of Montvale; 12 grandchildren and 30
great-grandchildren.

Rachel Butts of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and two brothers, Dexter Townley of
Bastian, and M. Samuel Townley of Montrose, Colo.

his residence.

He was born in Ceres, the son of the late Robert Sidney and Ollie Mae
Crow Neel. He was a member of the Red Oak Union Church. He was a retired
corrections officer with the Bland Correctional Center and a retired farmer.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Cralle; and a son, Harry
F. Neel.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Kidd Neel of the home; two granddaughters,
Stacey Neel of Fredericksburg, and Kirstie Neel of Mechanicsville; two
