Ella Sue Bogle Bish, 81, of Littlestown, Pa., formerly of Ceres, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, in Brethren Home, New Oxford, Pa. 
Private funeral services were held. Interment was in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Littlestown, Pa. 
Born July 1, 1926, in Ceres. She graduated from high school in Ceres and was retired from the Federal Trade Commission, Washington, D.C. 
She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew N. and Louvenia Pruett Bogle. 
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Richard K. Bish of Littlestown, Pa.; one sister, Selma Weaver of Silver Spring, Md.; and many nieces and nephews. 
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Littlestown, PA 17340.

Ella Hancock Pauley Blankenship 
Ella Hancock Pauley Blankenship, 82, of Route 2, Bland, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. 
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home in Bland with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment will follow in the Temple Hill Cemetery. 
She was born in Bland, the daughter of the late Charles and Mary Humphrey Hancock. 
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Chafe Pauley; and a son, Ralph Wayne Pauley. 
Survivors include her husband, Charles Blankenship of Bland; a son and daughter-in-law, Earnest and Clara Pauley of Powhatan; three grandchildren, Penny L. Pauley of Powhatan, Betty P. Estrada and Wanda P. Nichols, both of Chesterfield; and three great-grandchildren.

Herbert Hendrix 
Herbert Hendrix, 90, of Route 1, Bastian, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, in a Roanoke Hospital. 
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 11 a.m. from the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel, Bluefield, W.Va., with the Rev. Bobby Carter officiating. Burial followed in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Prosperity, W.Va. 
Born in Raleigh County, W.Va., he was a son of the late Isaac and Sarah Webb Hendrix. He was a member of the Fairdale Free Will Baptist Church in Fairdale, W.Va., and was a retired coal miner and member of the U.M.W.A. 
He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. 
Survivors include his wife, Nona Boggess Hendrix of Bastian; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Hazel) Webb of Glen Daniels, W.Va., Mrs. Valdia (Sarah) Barnett of Augusta, Ga., and Mrs. Tommy (Marie) Burton of Bastian; three sons and daughters-in-law, Herbert and Brenda Hendrix of Ashville, Ohio, Carl and Helen Hendrix of Brunswick, Ohio, and Louie and Phyllis Hendrix of Olmsted Township, Ohio; two sisters, Ethel Butcher of Powellton, W.Va., and Dora Clonch of Smither, W.Va.; and 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. 
The family suggests memorial contributions, if desired, be made to the Bland County Rescue Squad, Route 1, Box 75, Bastian, VA 24314.

Spurgeon Clyde McGrady 
Spurgeon Clyde McGrady, 71, of Bland, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. 
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 1 p.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment will follow in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Bluefield. 
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, where he served as a medical corpsman aboard the U.S.S. New Yorker. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. 
He was preceded in death by his father, Spurgeon McGrady; a son, Timothy Wayne McGrady; and a brother, Gordon McGrady. 
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen Farmer McGrady of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Ilene McGrady of Tazewell, and Andre and Karen McGrady of Bland; his mothers, Myrtle Worrell McGrady of Laurel Fork; two sisters, Mrs. Alvin (Georgie) Dalton of Hillsville, and Mrs. Melvin (Joy) Goad of Laurel Fork; five granddaughters, Shannon Durr of Princeton, W.Va., Gwyn McGrady of Bland, Cyndi Coleman of Wytheville, Amanda McGrady of Erwin, Tenn., and Alicia McGrady of Bristol; one great-grandson, Corey Durr of Princeton, W.Va.; one great-granddaughter, Rebekah Durr of Princeton, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Harry Thomas McGuire 
Harry Thomas "Tommy" McGuire, 57, of the Mechanicsburg community of Bland, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at Pulaski Community Hospital. 
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Frank Clifton officiating. Burial was in the Mechanicsburg Cemetery, Mechanicsburg. 
He was born May 4, 1940, in Mechanicsburg. 
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Edward McGuire; and a sister, Gay M. Kelly. 
Survivors include his wife, Cathern Blankenship McGuire of Bland; two sons and daughters-in-law, Brian K. and Nancy McGuire of Bland, and Kevin T. and Lisa McGuire of Bland; two daughters and son-in-law, Kay and John Clemons of Bland, and Cheryl McGuire of Bland; his mother, Flora Harman McGuire of Bland; one sister, Betty M. Vest of White Gate; father-in-law, Harold Blankenship of Bland; special friend, Samuel F. Groseclose; eight grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Norman T. Miller 
Norman T. Miller, 42, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998. 
A memorial service was held Monday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. at the Discovery United Methodist Church, Richmond. 
He was a 1975 graduate of Northside High School and founded Capital Investors Insurance Co. in Richmond. 
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Miller. 
Survivors include his daughter, Kristen Maria of Richmond; his father, Vaden H. Miller; a sister, Cheryl A. Miller of Bland; his brother and sister-in-law, Eric and Jane Saunders Miller of Montvale; and several nieces and nephews.

William Canless Parks 
William Canless "Bill" Parks, 87, of Bastian, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, in the Bluefield Regional Medical Center. 
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 11 a.m. at the Bastian Church of God with the Rev. William Hand officiating. Interment followed in the Rose Hill Cemetery. 
He was a son of the late Foster and Mary Parks. He was a member of the Bastian Church of God. 
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Jean Colley, Dorothy Lundy, and Edith Fulton; and a brother, Dewey Parks. 
Survivors include his wife, Josephine Parks of the home; two daughters, Patsy Jean Weydemeyer of Mountain Pine, Ariz., and Peggy Sue Hylton of Cumming, Ga.; two sons, Freddie Parks Covington, and Eddie Parks of Leesburg; two sisters, Mamie Estep of New Castle, Del., and Virginia Vaught of Huntington, W.Va.; and seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Margaret Chandler Sawyers 
Margaret Chandler Sawyers, 79, a resident of Asbury Center at Birdmont, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. 
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William D. Dale Sr., and the Rev. Penny Dale officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat. 
She was born in Bland County, a daughter of the late Charles Franklin and Lisa Jane Kimberland Chandler. She was a member of the Original Church of God. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. William D. Sawyers; and a son, Thomas Sawyers. 
Survivors include two sisters and brother-in-law, Josie Alberta Earhart of Hanover, Pa., Dorothy Irene and Clifford Ferguson of Taylorsville, N.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Chalmer C. and Ola Chandler or Rural Retreat; three step-grandchildren, Neda "Libby" Lester of Glade Springs, Chip Ferguson, and Mike Ferguson, both of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews. 
The family will receive friends Thursday, Feb. 5, from noon until 2 p.m. at Barnett Funeral Home.

Bessie Mae Lambert Sexton 
Bessie Mae Lambert Sexton, 79, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. 
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 3 p.m. at the Bland Community Church with the Rev. Leroy Long, the Rev. Claude Dove, the Rev. Ron Hutzel, and the Rev. Bill Dale officiating. Interment followed in the Stowers Cemetery. 
She was a member of the Bland Community Church. 
She is survived by two daughters, Sally Edward, and Ana Stiltner, both of Bland; three stepsons, Olen Sexton of Bland, Curtis Sexton, and Wythe Sexton, both of Fredericksburg; two grandchildren, Betty Elmore of Wytheville, and Joe Stiltner of Bland; four great-grandchildren, Christy Stiltner, Charlie Stiltner, both of Bland, Audra Repass, and Tina Repass, both of Wytheville; and one sister, Kate Hancock of Bastian.

James David Thompson 
James David Thompson, 71, of Bland, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. 
Graveside services were held Saturday, Jan. 31, at 1 p.m. at the Old Bethel Cemetery in Bland with the Rev. Bruce Shelton officiating. 
He was born in Bland County, a son of the late Brady and Edith Lambert Thompson. 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Thompson; and three sons, David Thompson, Claude Thompson, and Edward Thompson. 
Survivors include five sisters, Elsie Hounshell of Dublin, Mary King, Hazel Ellison, Peggy Dillow and Betty Thompson, all of Bland; a brother, Brady Thompson Jr. of Bland; and a special friend, Robert Blackwell Jr. of Bland.

Charles Greever Chandler Jr. 
Charles Greever Chandler Jr., 59, of Bland, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, in the Bluefield Regional Medical Center. 
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Kitts officiating. Interment will follow in the Grandview Cemetery, Bluefield. 
He was retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. 
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Greever Chandler. 
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Ann Chandler of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Laura Denise Chandler, and Karen Lynn and Alvin Hodges, all of Roanoke; two sons and daughter-in-law, Steven Dale Chandler of Roanoke, and Charles Greever III and Susie Chandler of Bland; one stepdaughter, Bobbi Faith Hobbs; his mother, Ruby Opal Chandler of Bland; one sister and brother-in-law, Betty Jean and Jimmy Lewis Hylton of Bland; and two step-grandchildren of Roanoke.

James Earnest Spangler, 51. of Bland, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville. 
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Tommy Ramsey officiating. Burial was in the Mountain Field Cemetery in Bland. 
He was born Dec. 13, 1946, at Hollybrook, a son of the late Earnest Lee and Stella Kathleen Falls Spangler. He was employed by Norfolk-Southern Railway. 
He is survived by his wife, Darlene Hager Spangler of Bland; one brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Thelma Spangler of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

Birdie French Underwood, 88, of Route 2, Bland, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, in Kegley Manor Nursing Home, Bastian. 
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Arnold Clark and Rev. Tommy Ramsey officiating. Burial was in the French Cemetery in Bland. 
She was born Aug. 4, 1909, in Kegley, W.Va., a daughter of the late George and Mollie Reed Saunders. 
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Mitchell French, and Eddie Underwood; and a daughter, Betty Patton. 
Survivors include three sons, Hubert M. French, Wallace Gene French, and John H. French, all of Bland; three daughters, Thelma Jane Sutphin of Sterling, Edna Conley, and Shirley Conley, both of Bland; one sister, Dane Wade of Princeton, W.Va.; one half-sister, Beulah Raines of Peterstown, W.Va.; and 29 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Jennifer Tickle Warden, 48, of Bland, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, in Twin County Regional Hospital. 
Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 13, at 10 a.m. at New Life Worship Center with the Pastor Leon Goad officiating. Interment will be in the Bland Cemetery. 
She was born Nov. 11, 1949 in Bland. 
She is survived by her husband, Robert Duncan of Radford; three daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Mike Gossett of Greensboro, N.C., Donna and Rick Akers of Bastian, and Holly Morris of Bluefield; a son, Rusty Warden of Greensboro, N.C.; her mother, Virginia Tickle of Bland; a sister, Beth Tickle of Galax; three brothers, Larry Tickle of Norfolk, Kenny Tickle, and Linwood Tickle, both of Bland; and four grandchildren, Bryan Gossett, Caleb Gossett, Joel Akers, and Matthew Morris.

Lillian Shrader Burton, 82, of Route 2, Bland, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998. 
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows with the Rev. Dave Wall officiating. Burial followed in the Shrader Cemetery in Bland County. 
She was born in Bland County on March 19, 1915, and was a daughter of the late Pyott Frazier and Mary Susan Crabtree Shrader. She was a member of the Round Bottom United Methodist Church on Wolf Creek in Bland County. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Payton Mathas Burton. 
Survivors include a brother, Watha Shrader of Narrows; three sisters, Linzie Cochrane and Eunice Childress, both of Bastian, and Blanche Walker of Bland; and a special nephew, Jim Shrader of Bluefield, W.Va. 
The family suggests that memorials be made to the Round Bottom United Methodist Church, Route 2, Narrows, VA 24124.

Effie Elizabeth Nunley 
Effie Elizabeth Nunley, 74, of Bland, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, in the Bluefield Regional Medical Center. 
Funeral services were Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Hollybrook, with the Rev. Charles A. Clark officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Gardens in Bluefield. 
She was born July 11, 1923, at Pocahontas, the daughter of the late Albert and Sally Bourne. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Nunley. 
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Larry Clark of Bland; three sons and daughters-in-law, Willie E. Nunley of Bland, Roy and Virginia Nunley of Rocky Gap, and Harry and Carolyn Nunley of Hollybrook; and 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Brenda Gail Wallace, 44, of Baltimore, Md., died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, in St. Agnes Hospital. 
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 19, at 1 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate. Burial will be in the Shiloh Cemetery, Bland County. 
She was born June 7, 1953, at Jewel Valley, the daughter of Rosie Nunley Fournier of Princeton, W.Va., and the late Roy Lee Wallace. 
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her boyfriend, Jack Burton of Bland; two daughters, Cheryl Barmann of Largo, Fla., and Michelle Nazarenus of Baltimore, Md.; one son, Michael Nazarenus of Baltimore, Md.; five sisters, June Zitzmann of Kenneth City, Fla., Wanda White, Deborah Curtis, both of St. Petersburg, Fla., Maxine Berkes, and Darlene Midyett, both of Treasure Island, Fla.; two brothers, Kenneth Wallace of Princeton, W.Va., and Michael Wallace of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and three grandchildren, Sarah Barmann, Kayla Barmann, and Billy Barmann.

Eula Mae Crouse Tickle, 86, of Bland, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at her residence. 
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment followed in the Robinette Cemetery, Bland. 
She was a daughter of the late Lemuel Henry Franklin Hue Anderson Crouse and Sarah Ollie Joines Crouse. She was a member of Saint Matthews Lutheran Church since 1935 and an associate member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. 
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Lee Smith and Bertie Alvirda Hage; one brother, Henry Maston Crouse; one niece, June Lee Smith Leonardi; three infant brothers; and her husband, Ewing Tickle. 
Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Guida Rea and Charles Wilson Lefler of Salem, and Vera Lene Tickle of Bland; one granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Sabrina Lynn and Teddy Doyle Lee of Salem; and one great-grandson, Chess Matthew Lee of Salem.
