Marjorie Hirschler
Marjorie Hirschler died Oct. 14, 2000.
She was born in Oakland, Calif., in 1909. She
graduated from Mills College and worked in the publicity office there.
In 1931 she married Frederic Hirschler of San Francisco.
During her adult life, Mrs. Hirschler was an
active volunteer in her community. She wrote publicity for the American
Woman's Voluntary Services during World War II. She was president of the
local and regional councils of the Girl Scouts, also serving on the national
board both as a member and a vice-president.
Mrs. Hirschler served several terms as an elected
member of the board of education in Oakland, Calif. She was a trustee of
Mills College and a member of the board of the Community Chest. In Charlottesville
she worked with Recording for the Blind and the League of Women Voters.
Mrs. Hirschler leaves a daughter, Carol Goldstein;
four granddaughters, Linda Goldstein, Annemarie Jutel, Janet Beucler and
Ellen Goldstein, and their families including three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 3:30 to
5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at University Village.

Dewey William Lamb
Dewey William Lamb, 73, of Gordonsville, died
Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at his residence.
Hew was born Feb. 5, 1927, in Albemarle County,
son of the late Henry Lamb and Myrtle Rogers Lamb.
Mr. Lamb owned and operated Green Hill Lumber
Co. in Gordonsville and was a member of Gordonsville United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma Hensley Lamb;
one daughter, Robin Lamb Stubbs and her husband, Stephen, of Somerset;
one son, Dewey E. "Danny" Lamb and his wife, Brenda, of Gordonsville; one
brother, Asberry Lamb of Barboursville; three sisters, Lorene Lam of Barboursville,
Irene Rogers of Orange and Matilda Corbin of Orange; and two grandchildren,
Preston Mark Lamb of Gordonsville and Devon Ashley Stubbs of Somerset.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday,
Oct. 19, at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville with interment to
follow in Maplewood Cemetery, Gordonsville. The Rev. Marilyn Spencer will
officiate.

A funeral service for Alice Pedersen will be

Pansy Meadows Pitcock
Pansy Meadows Pitcock, 80, a longtime resident
of Charlottesville, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000. She was a resident of
Eldercare Gardens.
She was born in Greene County on June 13, 1920.
She worked for many years at Leggett's Department Store in the children's
clothing department. She loved being around children. Prior to that she
worked at the University of Virginia Hospital.
Mrs. Pitcock was a devoted member of Church of
Our Saviour in Charlottesville. She was a wonderful correspondent and kept
in touch with her many friends and relatives until her arthritis prevented
her from writing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James
Calvin Pitcock in 1977, and by her mother, Hattie Myrtle Meadows in 1983.
She is survived by two stepchildren, Dolph Pitcock
and his family of Jacksonville, N.C., and Hettie Thomas and her children
of Crozet, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Church
of Our Saviour, Rock Chapel. Interment will follow in the churchyard.
Family and friends may visit from 7 to 8 p.m.

Corine Williams Hill
Corine Williams Hill, 76, of Orange, died Nov.
7, 2000, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
She was born Nov. 24, 1923, in Orange County,
daughter of Phyllis Williams.
She was a homemaker.
She was predeceased by one son, Edward Hill;
one daughter, Deloris Washington; one sister, Elizabeth W. Henderson; and
two brothers, Albert Williams and James Williams.
She is survived by three grandchildren, Janet
Washington of Fredericksburg and Dwayne and Tracey Hill of Gordonsville;
three great-grandchildren, Shante, Reneasha and Dashawn Washington, all
of Fredericksburg; a devoted friend, Louis Jimmy Johnson of Orange; and
a son-in-law, Joe Louis Washington of Gordonsville.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday,
Nov. 11, at Little Zion Baptist Church, Orange, with interment in the Johnson
Family Cemetery. Pastor Marion F. Wilkerson will officiate.

Paul B. Hood Jr.
Paul Babcock Hood Jr., 72, of Bedminster, N.J.,
died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, at Overlook Hospital, Summit, N.J.
He was born March 24, 1928, in Knoxville, Tenn.,
to the late Paul B. Hood Sr. and Mamie Verell Hood.
Mr. Hood attended Richmond Professional Institute.
He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and a former employee
at the University of Virginia Medical Center where he was an assistant
hospital controller. His hobbies included sailing, leatherwork and reading.
He is survived by two sons, Jeffrey Mustian Hood
of Charlottesville and Charles Marcus Hood of Silver Springs, Md.; and
a daughter, Paula Hood Smith and her husband, Brant, both of Culpeper.
Additional survivors include a grandson, John
Babcock Wood of Culpeper, and the mother of his children, Elizabeth Mustian
Hood of Charlottesville.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday,
Nov. 11, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Charlottesville, with the
Rev. Ralph W. Rowley officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to
the service on Saturday at the church.

Lauren Renee Ipsan, 34, of Stanardsville, died
Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at her home.
She was born April 28, 1966, in Havre de Grace,

She is survived by her husband, Phillip G. Ipsan
of Stanardsville; two sons, Stephen Walton and Maxwell Ipsan of Stanardsville;
her stepfather, Michael R. Jamison of Annandale; and a brother, Lawrence
B. Jamison of Painted Post, N.Y.

Nov. 11, at Ryan Funeral Chapel, Quinque, with interment in Evergreen Cemetery.

Hazel S. Meyers-Faust
Hazel S. Meyers-Faust, 71, of Charlottesville,
formerly of Rockwood, Pa., went to be with the Lord Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000,
at Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville.
She was born Sept. 30, 1929, in Somerset County,
Pa., daughter of the late Ned B. Weimer and Nellie G. Weimer nee Weigle.
She also was preceded in death by her husband, John P. Meyers.
She is survived by her loving husband, William
A. Faust; daughters, Carol M. Moeller and her husband, Henry, and Judy
Horner and her husband, Jerry; stepchildren, Judy Harris and her husband,
Charles, Cynthia Arnold and her husband, Douglas, William, and Beverly
Magazzu and her husband, Joseph; brother, Robert M. Weimer of Boswell,
Pa.; sister, Lois Ann Walters of St. Petersburg, Fla.; nine grandchildren
and eight great-grandchildren.
She was loved by everyone. Her happy disposition
and homemaking skills were admired by many. She loved cooking and baking,
and enjoyed people. Her family will miss her happy songs and friendly smiling
face.
A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Church of the Incarnation. All her friends are invited.
Burial services will be held today in Pennsylvania.

Donnie R. Mills
Donnie Ray Mills, 51, of Char-lottesville, died
Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, after a long illness.
He was born June 4, 1949, son of the late Andrew
"Jack" and Erma Snead Mills.
He attended Lane High School with the class of
1967 and served in the U.S. Navy aboard the flagship for the 7th Fleet,
U.S.S. St. Paul, during the Vietnam War.
Donnie was last employed by The Greens at Hollymeade
as maintenance manager. In his spare time he enjoyed the outdoors, gardening,
cooking and fishing.
He was a member of Cherry Avenue Christian Church
and his favorite Bible passage was Psalm 23.
Survivors include his stepfather, Willie J. Mills;
stepbrothers, Jimmy and Roy Mills; brother, Andrew J. Mills Jr.; niece,
Denise Mills Spradlin, great-niece, Kristi Finley; aunts and uncles, Doc
and Sue Mills, Clyde and Virginia Giannini, and Bud and Nancy Snead; three
half sisters, Judy Werner, Audrey Ro-man and Patricia Giampa; and a host
of other relatives. Special friends who helped Donnie during his illness
were Shannon and Little Bill.

August Purdum
August Purdum, 84, of Mechan-icsville, died Wednesday,
Nov. 8, 2000, at HealthSouth Hospital, Richmond.
He was born Aug. 1, 1916, in Somerset, son of
the late John William and Georgianna Carpenter Purdum. He also was preceded
in death by his first wife, Ruby Johnson Purdum; a brother, Fred; and five
sisters, Emma Southard, Nellie Smith, Georgianna Southard, Marion Purdum
and Rosa Lee Purdum.
He was a retired farm manager.
Survivors include his wife, Rebie Bell Durrer
Purdum of Mechanicsville; a daughter, Janet Hartsook and her husband, Ronnie,
of Gordonsville; two sons, Wayne Purdum and his wife, Myrtle, of Charlottesville,
and Larry Purdum and his wife, Paulette, of Rocky Mount, N.C.; a sister,
Virginia Durrer of Somerset; a brother, John of Mechanicsville; three grandchildren;
six great-grandchildren; and three stepsons, Whitelaw Durrer and his wife,
Carolyn, Preston Durrer and his wife, Diane, and Ronnie Durrer and his

Earlene Durrer Smith, 93, of Charlottesville,
died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at a local hospital.
She was born July 25, 1907, in Greene County,
daughter of the late Alva B.C. and Dennie L. Gilbert Durrer. She also was
preceded in death by her husbands, Lonnie B. Smith and C.O. Roberts; two
sons, Harold E. Roberts and Donald L. Roberts; and a sister, Ruby D. McCormack.
She was a member of First Baptist Church and
was retired from Va. Tel & Tel.
Survivors include sons, James M. "Joe" Roberts
of Hot Springs Village, Ark., and Louis A. Roberts of Richmond; a sister,
Opal Crick-enberger; six grandchildren, James M. Roberts Jr. and his wife,
Debra, Rita Ann Black, Shelia Roberts Vest and her husband, Kevin, Ken

Robert Lee Thorn
Robert Lee Thorn died of liver cancer on Tuesday,
Nov. 7, 2000, at home in Orange County.
He was born Nov. 16, 1947, in Washington, D.C.,
to Lillian Kirk Thorn and Robert E. Thorn.
Mr. Thorn is survived by two sons, William J.
Thorn and Lucas E. Thorn of Madison; two daughters, Kim Sulser of Englewood,
Fla., and Martha-Anne Iben of Baltimore; a sister, Kay VanDoren and her
fiance, Teddie R. Backe; a niece, Pati Crow and family, nephews, Jon Woodward
and son, all of Madison, and Ben Woodward of Culpeper; four grandsons;
and his dear friend, Martha Thorn.

Zane S. Apprey
Zane Swayzine Apprey, 53, of Charlottesville,
passed on to be with her heavenly Father on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, in
Memphis, Tenn., as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident.
Zane was born in Millington, Tenn. on March 7,
1947. She graduated from Barret's Chapel High School, in Memphis, and obtained
her training as a registered music therapist at Lincoln University in Jefferson
City, Mo. She completed her graduate work at the University of Kansas in
functional music. She had been a resident of Charlottesville since 1980.
Zane was a loving wife, mother and grandmother,
and she devoted her entire life to the service of others. She was a pianist
at Elk Run Baptist Church near Madison and was loved by many churches including
Charlottesville Church of Christ, Aldersgate Methodist Church and Zion
Union Baptist Church.
Zane was preceded in death by her father, James
H. Tripp, and her brother, Pryntice Ragland.
She is survived by her mother, Fannye B. Ragland
of Memphis; her husband, Maurice Apprey of Charlottesville; her son, Morrice
B. Apprey of Lynchburg; one grandson, Moorice Kevon Apprey of Charlottesville;
two brothers, the Rev. John Langston Ragland and the Rev. Rosheay Ragland,
both of Memphis; one sister, Monica Tripp of St. Louis; her stepmother,
Geraldine Tripp of St. Louis; her mother-in-law, Effie Thelma Quagrainie;
one sister- in-law, Alswell Gloria Quagrainie; one brother-in-law, Kweku
Abiw Dougan, all of Saltpond, West Ghana, Africa; two brothers-in-law,
Victor Apprey of Reston and Anthony Mark Apprey of NewCastle, England;
and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and relatives including Sherry and

Jeffery Earl Craft, 29, of Dillwyn, died Wednesday,
Feb. 28, 2001.
He was born June 20, 1971, in Portsmouth, the
son of Henry C. Craft of Dillwyn, and Lynne Gerrie Smith Craft of Bland
County.
He is survived by his wife, Monica Taylor Craft;
three children, Chasity Marie Taylor, Amber Lynne Craft and Jeffery Earl
Craft II; maternal grandmother, Betty R. Smith; paternal grandmother, Catherine
L. Craft; sister, Windy Paige Craft; two brothers, Quintin Lee Craft and

Margaret F. Gallup
Margaret Ella Farrar Gallup, widow of the late
Kenneth Raynor Gallup Sr., died Thursday, March 1, 2001, in Winston Salem,
N.C. Mrs. Gallup was the daughter of the late Albert Austin and Ella Carpenter
Farrar of Mt. Holly, N.C.
Mrs. Gallup was a member of St. Luke United Methodist
Church in Sanford, N.C. She was a former Sunday school teacher at the Steele
Street Methodist Church.
Mrs. Gallup graduated from Greensboro College
with a bachelor's of art degree in 1930, and graduated from Duke University
with a master's of art degree in 1933.
Mrs. Gallup was a member of the private John
Grady Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and was a past
regent and member of the Lee County Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy.
She is survived by her sons, Dr. Kenneth R. Gallup
Jr. and his wife, Sharon, of Winston Salem, N.C., and Albert Gallup and
his wife, Linda, of Sanford, N.C.; grandchildren, Malinda Carole Gallup
of Winston Salem, N.C. and Kenneth R. Gallup III of Elon College, N.C.;

Pauline H. Jackson
Pauline Harris Jackson, 56, slipped the surly
bonds of earth to touch the face of God on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2001.
She was dearly loved by her family and many friends
and will be greatly missed. Her life was a life of service, laughter, and
deep humanitarian compassion.
Pauline was born May 30, 1944, in Albemarle County,
the youngest of 10 children, born to Joseph Henry Harris Sr. and Rosa Smith
Harris, also of Albemarle County. She was preceded in death by both parents,
her father in 1945 and her mother in 1955. In 1955, she was taken into
the care of foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. John C. Rawlings of Albemarle
County, who also preceded her in death. Three sisters, Louise Harris Fernandez,
Grace Harris Brooks and Frances Harris, and two brothers, Joseph Henry
Harris Jr. and Hugh Lovejoy Harris preceded her in death.
She was a proud and enthusiastic 1962 graduate
of Jackson P. Burley High School in Charlottesville. An active and bright
student, Pauline was a member of the Honor Society and played the clarinet
in the Burley Bears marching band. Despite her impoverished background,
her caring and loving demeanor was abundantly evident. Her 1962, classmates
voted her the "most generous" member of the class.
Pursuing her passion for helping others in need,
she earned her LPN certificate from the University of Virginia in 1968
and was a cheerful nurse at the University of Virginia Medical Center for
many years, working mostly in the newborn nursery unit.
Cooking was her lifeblood. For many years Pauline
was employed as a part-time cook at the University of Virginia and several
local restaurants, as did her mother before her. In the last 33 years of
her life, Pauline never worked fewer than two jobs at a time. She gave
her last full day of work, as a school nurse at Walker Upper Elementary
School and an after-care worker at St. Anne's-Belfield School, on Dec.
14, 2000.
Pauline was a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church
in Albemarle County.
Her survivors include her husband, Curtis Holman
Jackson of Louisa; two sons, Paul Clinton Harris Sr. of Albemarle County,
and Roland H. Young of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; one daughter, Sherry Young-Jones
of Chesterfield County; one daughter-in-law, Monica L. Harris; one son-in-law,
Earl R. Jones; four treasured grandchildren, Paul Clinton Harris Jr., Alexandra
Mackenzie Harris, Alanah Madison Harris and Adoria Jamesa Jones; four sisters,
Estelle Harris Phox of Princeton, N.J., Margaret Harris Page of Baltimore,
and Silvia Harris Coles and Lucy Harris Briggs, both of Charlottesville;
one aunt, Helen Smith Wesley of Charlottesville; four uncles, Bernard Clinton
Smith of West Palm Beach, Fla., Thomas W. Smith, James H. Smith and Warner
Wesley, all of Charlottesville; and numerous cherished uncles, aunts, cousins,
nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
A vigil will be held at noon Saturday at First
Baptist Church, 735 Park Street, followed by funeral services at 1 p.m.
The Rev. Dr. R.A. Johnson will officiate and interment will be in Monticello
Memory Gardens.
Her children would like to extend sincere thanks
to the medical staff of the University of Virginia Medical Center and the
Hospice of the Piedmont for the personal and professional care of their
mother during her illness. They also are indebted to numerous family members
and friends for the many acts of love and kindness bestowed upon their
mother during the final months of her life on this earth.

Adgile M. McCauley
Mrs. Adgile Michie (McCauley) McCauley, 86, of
Staunton and formerly of Charlottesville, and the widow of Willard S. McCauley,
died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at her residence.
She was born Nov. 25, 1914, in Charlottesville,
a daughter of Ernest and Minnie Thurston McCauley. Mrs. McCauley was a
homemaker and a seamstress.
Her husband of 46 years preceded her in death
in 1983. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Joel A. "Mac"
and Ellie McCauley of Staunton, and Richard E. and Sharon McCauley of Charlotte,
N.C.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Phyllis and Thomas Powell, and
Hope Cason, all of Charlottesville; and seven grandchildren, Joel A. McCauley
II and his fiancee, Vanessa Walker, Shelly, Allyson and Megan McCauley,

following the service. There will be no public viewing.

Thomas B. Moore
Thomas Benjamin Moore, 68, of Piney River, died
Thursday morning, March 1, 2001, at the Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born May 4, 1932, at Appomattox, he was the son
of the late Edwin M. Moore and Estelle Martin Moore.
He was the manager of Piney River Funeral Home,
and a Virginia Funeral Service licensee. He attended Appomattox schools
and was a graduate of John A. Gupton Mortuary College. He was a member
of the Virginia Funeral Directors Association, the National Funeral Directors
Association and the South Side Funeral Directors Association. He also was
a member of the Piney River Fire Department, Massies Mill Ruritan Club
and Bethlehem United Methodist Church at Roseland.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict
and a cattleman and farmer in the Appomattox community.
He is survived by a close and devoted friend,
June Thornhill of Appomattox; his sister, Evalena M. Martin and her husband,
Abner, of Appomattox; a niece, Barbara White and her husband, Mark, of
Richmond; a nephew, Phillip Martin and his wife, Evelyn, of Amherst; four
great-nieces, Holly, Tara, Jennifer and Cassie; and a great-nephew, Mathew.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday
at Rose Union Baptist Church in Piney River, with the Rev. Wayne Moore
officiating. Interment will follow in the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery
at Appomattox.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and
7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Piney
River Fire Department at Piney River, Va. 22964; the Roseland Rescue Squad,
P.O. Box 39, Roseland, Va. 22967; or the Bethlehem United Methodist Church
at Roseland, Va. 22967.

Thomas Sims Shifflett
Thomas Sims Shifflett, 71, of Waynesboro, passed
away Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at the Augusta Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 22, 1929, in Albemarle County,
a son of the late Chesley and Mary Jane Shifflett.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene M. Shifflett
of Waynesboro; a daughter, Margaret A. Roach of Waynesboro; two brothers,
William Shifflett of Richmond, and Roy Mason Shifflett of Alexandria; three
grandchildren, Shelly Godbey and her husband, Barry, and Mark Roach and
Dustin Roach; and a great-grandchild, Jullian Godbey. He was preceded in
death by a sister, Mabel Bruce.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday
at Ryan Funeral Chapel in Quinque, with interment in Evergreen Cemetery.
The Rev. Eddie Godbey will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Saturday evening at the funeral home.
Karnes Taylor Jr.
Karnes Taylor Jr. entered in to Heaven and became
an angel on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at his residence.
He was born Nov. 10, 1957, in Atlantic, to Elizabeth
Schoolfield and Karnes Taylor Sr.
He was a resident of Greene County for the past
6 years and was employed by Technicolor of Charlottesville for 8 years.
He is survived by his wife, Tonya-Lee Taylor;
his mother and stepfather, Elizabeth and Weldon Knox; three daughters,
Teresa Hoskins, Alexis Brown and Tori Taylor; one son, Karnes Taylor III;
one stepson, Brandon Brown; six grandchildren, Deneesha, Daja, Ronnie Lee,
Eric, Taneesha and Robin; eight sisters, Carolyn Taylor, Fannie Mae Giddens,
Virginia Taylor, Tammy Knox, Thelma Knox, Barbara Smith, Renee Knox and
Theola Smith; two brothers, Weldon and David Knox; 31 nieces and nephews
and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m.
Saturday from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Horntown, on the Eastern Shore.
Interment will be in the Taylor family cemetery in Atlantic.
Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m.
this evening at the Cooper & Humbles Funeral Co. in Accomac, and at
the church on Saturday one hour prior to the service.

Dorothy M. Wood
Dorothy M. Wood, 75, of Stanardsville, died Tuesday,
Feb. 27, 2001, at her home.
She was born March 29, 1925, in Nortonsville,
a daughter of the late Kye Shifflett and Maggie Roberts Shifflett. She
was the loving wife of the late Fred Manis Wood Sr. for 56 years.
She is survived by her four beloved children,
Fred M. Wood Jr., Ronnie Ray Wood, Nelline Mae Keiser and Rodger Dean Wood,
all of Stanardsville; a brother, Bobby Shifflett; a sister, Wilma Shifflett
Cook, both of Rochwell, N.C.; and 18 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren
and three great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday
at Ryan Funeral Chapel in Quinque, with the Rev. David Allison officiating.
Interment will follow in Chestnut Grove Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
