Miriam Nellie Colton Perry
Miriam Nellie Colton Perry died March 6, 2002, in Provo, at age 93.
She was born Sept. 27, 1908, to Charles Henry Colton and Nellie Hacking
Colton, in Vernal. Miriam was the second of nine children.
Growing up as a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints, Miriam also excelled in school. She attended elementary school
in Vernal, Hayden, and Neola, then junior high and high school in Vernal.
Competitive drama, operettas, sports, dancing, and student government were
her delight. She graduated in 1926.
After high school, Miriam worked for one year as office assistant and
school librarian at Uintah High School and at the Ashley Co-op Mercantile
Company. In June of 1927 she moved to Provo, where she completed two years
at BYU and became a skilled stenographer and typist.
Miriam worked as a stenographer at the Farmers and Merchants Bank in
Provo, then at Cherry Hill Dairy. On August 26, 1931, she was married to
her high school sweetheart, Rolland Perry, in the Salt Lake Temple.
Soon after this Rolland left on a two-year mission to the Eastern States.
Miriam was loyal in helping with financial support and letters of love.
Returning, Rolland attended BYU and earned a bachelor's degree. Douglas
and David were born to them in Provo. Miriam's talents and interests were
focused on the family, church, and community.
In 1940 the family moved to Madison, Wis., for graduate school. Miriam
was always very supportive of Rolland's occupation. World War II thrust
Rolland, as a physicist, into the development of the atomic bomb. Because
of this, the family moved to Princeton, N.J., then to Los Alamos, N.M.,
where Kathleen and Diane were born.
After the war, the family moved first to Orem then to Logan, where
for 10 years Miriam excelled in learning languages at USAC, serving in
the Relief Society, as a Gleaner teacher, in the Primary as a teacher and
president, and as an active member of the PTA In 1955 Miriam served as
a county and state delegate to the Republican convention. She did wonderful
things in decorating and produced excellent flowers, fruits, and vegetables.
She had sacrificed much for an education, so she now did many things
to encourage her children in learning. An avid and skilled writer, Miriam
wrote poetry and produced Church programs and pageants.
Together, Rolland and Miriam frequently attended the Logan Temple,
enjoying the sacred work there and also working hard on their genealogical
research with their extended family members.
In 1957, the family moved to Hinsdale, Ill., where she enjoyed 14 years
of active service in the Church, notably teaching the 13-year-old girls
in Sunday School, and a genealogy class. She also served as ward and then
as stake librarian for over eight years. Always an avid reader, Miriam
became well versed in countless Church books.
In May 1971, Rolland retired from Argonne National Laboratory. They
moved to Provo, to live in their present home at 2954 North Apache Lane.
One cause dear to Miriam's heart during these Provo years has been
helping the exiled saints from Vietnam.
She served nearly four years as an ordinance worker in the Provo Temple.
Miriam and Rolland served at the Missionary Training Center for eight years.
A diligent writer all her life, she created prolific journals and letters,
and two major books on the descendants of her Colton and Hacking grandparents.
Although limited to a walker and a wheelchair, she learned to use the computer
at age 90.
Miriam was predeceased by her parents and four brothers. She is survived
by her husband, Rolland, and their four children: Douglas C. Perry, David
Earl Perry, Kathleen (Mrs. Dennis) P. Schade, and Diane (Mrs. Gary) P.
Kapp. Miriam's surviving sisters are Lorna (Mrs. Elmer) C. Cox, Bernice
(Mrs. Wesley) C. Rawlings, Ardis (Mrs. Franklin) C. Linford, and Edna (Mrs.
John) C. Sargent. Her grandchildren number 21 and her great-grandchildren
