Blalock

  Alton Gayl e Blalock, 52, of Mount Pleasant, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 8 at Liberty Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Bob Griffith officiated. Curry-Welborn Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Blalock was born May 26, 1948 in Deport, the son of Frank Blalock and Ruth Miller. He was self employed in the survey business.

He is survived by his father Frank Blalock; mother Ruth Miller Blalock; son Aaron Blalock of Beaumont; step-son Eric Tigert of Sulphur Springs; grandson Christian Uribe; brother and sister-in-law Mickey and Rebecca Blalock of New Diana; sisters and brothers-in-law Gayla and Robert Conner of Mount Pleasant, Donnita and Willie Conger of Dallas; brother-in-law J.T. Wright of Mount Pleasant; sister-in-law Nancy Blalock of Mount Pleasant; nephew and wife Shayne and Donna Coker of Mount Pleasant. He was preceded in death by his wife Judy Blalock; brother Sherrill Blalock; sister Frankie Sue Wright.
 

Brooks

  Henrietta Margretta McGill Brooks, 66, of Mount Pleasant, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001 at Titus Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 10 at White Oak Baptist Church. The Rev. Kirthell Roberts officiated. Interment wasin Piney Cemetery in Mount Pleasant under the direction of Tumey Mortuary. Pallbearers will be James Dudley, Clarence Eaton, Ezeal McGill, Willie McGill, Byron Byrd, Clarence Brooks and Kenneth Brooks. Honorary pallbearers were sons, grandsons and brothers.

Mrs. Brooks was born Feb. 4, 1934 in Mount Pleasant, the daughter of Tom McGill and Beatrice Cannister McGill. Mrs. Brooks was affiliated with White Oak Baptist Church and Mount Gilmore Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant. She attended Booker T. Washington schools and was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband the Rev. John Morris Brooks of Mount Pleasant; daughter and son-in-law Gwendolyn Brooks Harvey and Donnie Harvey of Mount Pleasant; sons and daughters-in-law Perry and Donna Brooks of Mount Pleasant, Van Lavean and Wanda Brooks of Arlington; eight grandchildren Tyrone Brooks, Jermaine Brooks, Sheniqua Darbriel Brooks, Sakeia Brooks, Sharion Brooks, Trinity Brooks, Dematrius Richardson and Thomas Nolley; eight great-grandchildren; brothers Charles McGill and Rufus McGill, both of Mount Pleasant, Lewis McGill of Sulphur Springs, Melvin McGill of Garland; James Otis McGill of Denver, Colo.; sisters Grace Mosley and JoElla Thornton, both of Mount Pleasant, Eulastine Williams of Dallas, Henrietta Williams of Los Angeles Calif., Clara Harper of Spokane, Wash.; daughters-in-law Mary Brooks of Mount Pleasant ad Lenesia Tillotson of Richardson. She was preceded in death by her parents; son Billy Brooks; grandson Keris Brooks; sisters Fannie Donaldson and Tommie Byrd; brothers Edward, Bombus, William, Milton and Johnnie Lee McGill.

Coody

TOMBALL - Barney E. Coody Jr., 36, of Tomball, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001 in Texarkana.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 8 at Harvey Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Vernon. Floyd Kaiser officiated. Interment was in Springer Cemetery in Hockley on Friday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m. under the direction of Harvey Funeral Home. 

Mr. Coody was born Sept. 1, 1964 in Tomball. He was a construction worker.

He is survived by his mother Patty Simmons Brenner of Tomball; brother and sister-in-law Jacob and Wendy Simmons of Littleton, Colo.; grandmother Doris Simmons of Mount Vernon; daughter Amy Coody of Pittsburg; uncle and aunt Floyd and Margaret Kaiser of Ada, Okla; cousins Chris Kaiser of Oklahoma City, Okla., Grady Kaiser of Magnolia, Ark., Patrick Kaiser of Oklahoma City, Okla. He was preceded in death by his grandfather Jake Simmons, who died in August of 2000.

Copeland

  Emily Francis Copeland, 83, of Mount Pleasant, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Titus Regional Medical Center. 

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, at Bates-Cooper Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant. Bro. Johnny Hailes officiated. Interment was at Masonic Cemetery. Pallbearers were Marcus Copeland, James Copeland, Virgil Copeland, Eddie Priefert, Robby Dunn, David Hansel and Rick Letot. 

Mrs. Copeland was born Feb. 7, 1918, in Palestine, Ill., the daughter of Charles Oscar White and Clara Apple. She was employed as a secretary. Mrs. Copeland was a member of the Highland Park Baptist Church. 

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Manuel and Annie Copeland of Mount Pleasant; daughters and sons-in-law Linda and Larry Klein of Coatesville, Penn., and Kim Lisa and Mike Crabb of Mount Pleasant; brother Lincoln White of El Dorado; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Virgil E. Copeland; two brothers; three sisters and her parents.

HUGHES SPRINGS - George Monroe Counts Jr., 71, of Hughes Springs, died Saturday Feb. 10, 2001 at Titus Regional Medical Center.

Graveside services were held be at 2 p.m., Tuesday Feb. 13, 2001 at Damascus Cemetery in Mount Pleasant under the direction of Curry-Welborn Funeral Home. Donnie Goodwin officiated. 

Mr. Counts was born June 8, 1929 in Titus County, the son of George Monroe Counts Sr. and Exa Green. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was self-employed as a carpenter. He was a Baptist.

He is survived by his wife Louise Weldon Counts; daughters Susan Clark of Marshall, Cynthia Moore of Commerce; step-children James Wynn of Indianapolis, Ind., Penny Wynn of Little Rock, Ark.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son George Monroe Counts III.

Gossett

LONGVIEW - Charlotte Gossett, 66, of Longview, died Saturday Feb. 10, 2001.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday Feb. 13 at Harvey Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Bob Walker officiated. Interment was in City Cemetery.

Mrs. Gossett was born Sept. 8, 1934 in Mount Vernon, the daughter of C. S. Yates and Ruth Gilbert. She was a nurse in the Mount Vernon area for many years.

She is survived by her sons Mike Gossett of Irving, Faron Gossett of Longview; brothers Charles Yates of League City, Donald Yates of Mount Vernon; sister Retha Gay Lewis of Royce City; grandchildren Christopher Gossett, Cassie Ann Gossett, Amanda Gossett, J.T. Gossett, Baily Gossett; two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Robbie Gossett in 1982.

Haley

HAMLIN - Linda Lou Justiss Haley, 60, of Hamlin, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001 in an Abilene hospital.

Mrs. Haley was the daughter of Morris Sheperd Justiss of Mount Pleasant.

She was born July 23, 1940 in Dallas. She graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1958 and received a bachelor’s degree and master’s degrees from Texas Woman’s University. Mrs. Haley was a home economics teacher at Perryton High School for eight years and at Hamlin High School for the past 17 years. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Hamlin and volunteered for many organizations.

She is survived by her husband Roddy Haley of Hamlin; daughters and sons-in-law Lisa Renee Haley and Beau Smith of Euless, Holly Haley and Chad Cowan of Anson; father Morris Sheperd Justiss of Mount Pleasant; brother Larry Justiss of Hallettsville; sister Gail Justiss Anthony of Van; grandson Riley Webb Smith; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother Wilma Jones.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 5 at First Baptist Church of Hamlin with Dr. Tracy Watson officiating. Interment was in Hamlin Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Foster-Adams Funeral of Hamlin. Pallbearers were Delbert Trew, Glenn Barton, Jerry Thomas, Daniel Jones, Roy Thompson, Joe Cowan, Randy Brown, Dan Byerly.

Memorials may be made to the Linda Haley Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Hamlin National Bank.

Harman

KILGORE - Former Mount Pleasant resident Charles Kenneth “Cotton” Harman, 76, of Kilgore, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001 at his residence in Liberty City.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m., Monday, Feb.12 at Mount Hope Cemetery in Rusk County under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Kilgore.

Mr. Harman was born May 22, 1924 in Mexia. He was a former resident of Mount Pleasant and had been a resident of the East Texas area for the past 30 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was currently employed by Lumlog Inc. of Kilgore. Mr. Harman also had worked for many years in sales of oil field equipment.

He is survived by his daughters Melanie Ford and Kay Edney, both of Liberty City; sons Kenny Harman of Gladewater, Tommy Harman of McLeod sister Paula Smith of Walker, La.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Horton

TYLER - Toby Davis Horton, 93, of Tyler, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001 in Tyler.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7 at Purley Baptist Church. The Rev. Brian Adair officiated. Interment was in Purley Cemetery under the direction of Harvey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon.

Mrs. Horton was born Dec. 27, 1907 in Mount Vernon, the daughter of Col. Foster Davis and Texie Pynes. She was a long time resident of the Purley Community and a member of Purley Baptist Church.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Charles and Barbara Horton of Tyler, Leonard and Brenda Horton of Winnsboro, Larry Horton of Chandler; sister Mary Newsome of Aztec, N.M.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Kermit (Brooks) Horton; seven brothers; sisters.

Johnson

NAPLES - Cora Mae Johnson, 61, of Naples, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001 in a Longview hospital.

Funeral services were held be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10 at Omaha First Baptist Church with the Rev. David Venters officiating. Interment was at Reynold Cemetery under the direction of Mount Pleasant Funeral Home.

Mrs. Johnson was born April 10, 1939 in Gilmer. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her daughters Sandra Wade of Atlanta, Josey Johnson of Longview, Pam Walker of Daingerfield, Vivian Johnson of Omaha; sons Alvin Johnson Jr., Bobby Johnson, both of Houston, Robert Johnson of Fort Bragg, N.C.; sisters Audrey Faye Cook, Patsy Gay Johnson, both of Betty, Gwen Dawson of Monroe, La., Angela Wiggins of Woodridge, Va..; brothers Tony Wright of Palm Beach, Fla., Danny Wright, Joe Wright, Eric Wright, Rod Wright, all of Betty; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; host of other relatives.

 
Kelley 

Florence H. Kelley, 78, of Mount Pleasant, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at SunBridge Nursing Home. 

Graveside funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park under the direction of Bates-Cooper Funeral Home. Dr. Clint Davis officiated. 

Mrs. Kelley was born Sept. 9, 1922, in Mount Pleasant, the daughter of Clyde Barber and Blanche Graff. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Janice Lynn and Bob Rockenbaugh of Grand Prairie; grandchildren Shawn Rockenbaugh of McAllen and Stacy Trentham of Grand Prairie; great-grandchildren Jessica and Rachel Trentham of Grand Prairie; sister Doris White of Mount Pleasant; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband William Kelley and her parents. 

Lovell

COOKVILLE - Tressie L. Lovell, 95, of Cookville, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001 in Mount Pleasant.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 7 at East Mountain Church of Christ. The Revs. Doug Blackard and James Winniford officiated. Interment was in East Mountain Cemetery in Upshur County under the direction of Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer. 

Ms. Lovell was born June 28, 1905 in Upshur County. She was a retired cafeteria worker for East Mountain Schools.

She is survived by sons, Aubrey Milton Johnson of Avinger, Bobby Dean Johnson of Cookville; daughters, Mildred Faye Ellis of Odessa, Wanda Johnson Gilliland of Brandon, Miss.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph E. Johnson, who died in 1955; son Joseph Milton Johnson.

Mars

Era Ion Mars, 82, of Mount Pleasant, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 10 at Curry-Welborn Funeral Home Chapel. Wayne Collier officiated. Interment was at Nevills Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mike Henry, Doug Phillips, Scott Phillips, Dennis Mars, Terry Mars, Russell Huff.

Mrs. Mars was born Nov. 17, 1918 in Titus County, the daughter of Charlie A. Stevens and Clyde Freeze. She was a housewife and a Methodist.

She is survived by sons and daughter in law Charles (Monkey) and Sue Mars of Mount Pleasant, William Mars of Houston, Doris Mars of Longview; daughters and sons-in-law Laveeda and Charles Huff of Fort Worth, Laverne and Jimmy Eakins of Karnack, Nancy and Sammy Phillips of Pittsburg; brother Robert Stevens of New Castle, Okla.; sisters Leatha Jones of Houston, Bertha Brown of Mount Pleasant, Erma Hagemann of Denton; 27 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter Evelyn Mae Mars and son Kenneth Mars.

Montgomery

JEFFERSON - Nolan A. “Bill” Montgomery, 83, of Jefferson, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001 in Mount Pleasant.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 10 at Haggard-Heaster Funeral Home Chapel in Jefferson. Paul Hillier officiated. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Haggard-Heaster Funeral Home.

Mr. Montgomery was born March 10, 1917 in Titus County, the son of J.C. Montgomery and Ester Franklin Montgomery. He had lived in Jefferson since 1938, moving there from Mount Pleasant. He was a member of Jefferson Church of Christ.

He is survived by his son Mike Montgomery of Coppell; daughters Wanda Davis of Cookville, Sherrie Webb of Longview; sister Myrtle Attaway of Mount Pleasant; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Flora in July of 1996.

Rice

  Morris Marlin Rice, 89, of Mount Pleasant, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001 at Currey Nursing Home.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 10 at Union Hill Cemetery under the direction of Bates-Cooper Funeral Home. The Bro. Doyle Rust officiated.

Mr. Rice was born June 3, 1911 in Titus County, the son of Pascal and Elsie Roach Rice. He was a retired carpenter and farmer and a member of the Cypress Baptist Church.

He is survived by daughters Ann Bishop, Patsy Hinton, both of Mount Pleasant; son Larry Gene Rice of Longview; sisters Vassie McNeil, Marie Rice, both of Mount Pleasant; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ada Rice; son Lester Rice; five brothers; one sister.

Richardson

DALLAS - Pheraby Alma Richardson, 94, of Dallas, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001 in Mount Vernon.

Graveside funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 10 at Hughes Springs Cemetery under the direction of Alexander Funeral Home in Naples. The Rev. Neal Thornburgh officiated.

Ms. Richardson was born Dec. 2, 1906 in Comanche County. She attended Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene and was a retired bookkeeper. Ms. Richardson was a Methodist.

She is survived by her daughter Jean Simmons of Omaha; granddaughters and spouses Debra Gail Simmons and Douglas Bartley of White Post, Va., Sandra Jill Simmons and John Gray of Houston; numerous nieces and nephews.

Swafford

  Susan Malinda Swafford, 89, of Mount Pleasant, died Saturday Feb. 10, 2001 at Villa #2 Residential Care.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday Feb. 13 at Bates-Cooper Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. John Lindsay and Danny Stevens and Bro. LloydCashionofficiated. Interment was in Old Union Cemetery. Pallbearers were Rayford Huffman, Phillip Brown, William Swafford, George Swofford, Ricky Swafford, Fred Holcomb, Dale Swafford and Steve Swafford. Honorary pallbearers were J.C. Swafford, Emory Swafford and James Swafford.

Mrs. Swafford was born Dec. 23, 1911 in Pickens, S.C. She was a homemaker, and she was a member of Old Union Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Ann and Charles Martin of Mount Pleasant, Lavonne and Bobby Holcomb of Diana; daughter-in-law Margie Swafford of Mount Pleasant; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Earl Swafford; her son Merrett Swafford.

Westbrook

WOLFE CITY - Claudia Ardell Westbrook, 88, of Wolfe City, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001 at Smith Nursing Home in Wolfe City.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 11 at First United Methodist in Omaha. The Revs. Von Dawson and Bill Turner officiated. Interment was in Omaha Cemetery under the direction of R.W. Owens & Son Funeral Home in Wolfe City. Pallbearers were Wesley Moore, Stanley Moore, Bradley Moore, Kenneth Schroeder, Ray Thigpen, Frankie Malone and John O’Connor. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Atkison and John Kirk.

Mrs. Westbrook was born March 12, 1912 in Bancker, La., the daughter of Bascomb and Elvina Toups Henry. She married Joseph Weldon Westbrook June 21, 1941 in Galveston. Mrs. Westbrook was a housewife.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Carolyn and George Moore of Wolfe City; grandsons Wesley Moore and Bradley Moore, both of Wolfe City, Stanley Moore of Omaha; brother and sister-in-law Winford and Louise Henry; great-granddaughter Sarah Connor Moore of Omaha. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three brothers.

Young

RED RIVER COUNTY - Lee D. Young, 90, of Red River County, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001 in Texarkana.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 14 at Alexander Funeral Chapel in Naples. The Rev. Carl Raleigh l officiated. Interment was in Cornett Cemetery in Naples. Pallbearers were be David Dowell, Charles Dill, Mickey Wright, Robert G. Young, Marvin G. Young and Robbie Briggs.

Mrs. Young, a former resident of the Cornett Community near Naples, was born June 30, 1918 in Red River County. She was a Methodist.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Robert G. and Nancy Young of New Boston; daughter and son-in-law Kay and Michael Stennulson of Cottonwood, Ariz.; brother Flyn Blair of Lampasas; sister Edestar Martinak of Fort Worth; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin Richard Young; son E.G. Young; daughters Margie Roeder and Verda Smith.
