Georgia M. Brooks
FORT WORTH -- Georgia Mae Brooks, 85, a retired dressmaker, died Monday at a Fort Worth hospital.

Funeral: 2 p.m. today at Baker Funeral Home. Burial: Cedar Hill Memorial Park. Visitation: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Georgia Mae Brooks was born Feb. 16, 1911, in Greenville, Texas. The daughter of Shann Brooks and Addie Bell Amos, Georgia came to Fort Worth as a very young girl. Here, she attended the public schools. Early in life she was converted and baptized; her early Christian education came in the Baptist church and Georgia followed its precepts throughout her life. Failing health eventually prevented her attending worship services but never dampened her fervor in worship.

Ms. Brooks worked as a dressmaker and was employed for nearly half a century by the Joseph Gumenski family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and all but two siblings.

Survivors: Brother, Alfred L. Brown of Oakland, Calif.; sister, Hazel Brown Kirkpatrick of Dallas; cousin, Victoria Fowler; sister-in-law, Alvester Brown; and several nieces and nephews scattered throughout California and Texas.

Lockey M. Brooks
ARLINGTON -- Lockey Mae Brooks, 89, a homemaker, died Tuesday in Arlington.

Graveside service: 2 p.m. Thursday in Woodland Park Cemetery in Mineral Wells. Visitation: 6 to 8 tonight at White's Funeral Home.

On October 29, 1996, Lockey Mae Brooks left us to claim her prize and to be with her Lord. Ms. Brooks was born Jan. 1, 1907, and raised on Toni Creek near Mineral Wells. Active in her children's school and community, she was a member of the PTA, a charter member of the Women's Club and a member of the Dalia Garden Club. She was a former member of Central Methodist Church and a member of First Baptist Church, both of Mineral Wells.

Lockey Brooks will be greatly missed, but always remembered by her family and friends for her smile, her warm spirit and the love she always so willingly shared.

And now, in the place her Lord prepared for her, with loved ones who went before her, she is resting in the arms of her Savior, waiting for us all to be with her someday.

Survivors: Her daughter, Darlene Higginbotham and her husband, Bill, of Arlington; and her sons, Floyd M. Brooks Jr. and his wife, Charlene, of Mineral Wells, Bill B. Brooks and his wife, Dorothy, of Austin, and Boyd B. Brooks and his wife, Marilyn, of Plano. She is also survived by her sister, Rachel Burson, and her husband, Jerry Burson, of Mineral Wells. She was known lovingly as Mother Brooks by her nine grandchildren and her many great-grandchildren.

Nathan Edwards was born June 12, 1934, in Cartwright, Texas. He was a graduate of Tyler High School and was a CPCU. He spent his entire career in the insurance industry working for American States Insurance Co. and The Millers Group, where he was a vice president. Nate Edwards was a dedicated civic leader who reached the level of national director of the U.S. Jaycees. He re ceived the Texas Jaycee award as outstanding local president of the Texas Jaycees. He was active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 10-1, located on Lake Texoma. As flotilla commander and division captain, he received numerous awards for his outstanding leadership.

He was an active member of Richland Hills Church of Christ.

R. Edward Hanley Jr. was born Jan. 25, 1930, in Lindsay, Okla. He had lived in Fort Worth since 1957. He was an elder at Ridglea Christian Church. He was a graduate of East Central State University. He was formerly a schoolteacher, worked for General Dynamics and was a past business editor for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He retired from TU Electric. He delivered Meals On Wheels. He loved writing. He was a member and past president of Sigma Delta Chi, the society of professional journalists. He wrote humorous productions for his church and participated in more than 20 Gridiron shows, serving as director, writer and soloist.

He was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn Abshier Hanley, in September of 1989.

Carolyn John was born July 15, 1906, in Phoenixville, Pa. She was a member of the Lutheran church, the Watercolor Club of Philadelphia and holds the Dana Gold Medal of that club. Ms. John graduated from the Pennsylvania Museum School of Art, taught at Lowe-Heywood School for Girls and Brunswick School for Boys. She also studied at the Boston Fine Arts School, the University of Cambridge and Wye College in England. Fort Worth and the Southwest were very special to her.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey B. John and Ella John.

Following his retirement from the corps in 1989, he continued his life's work as a certified engineering technician by founding Recal Calibration Services, a company that calibrates and certifies laboratory equipment used to test the strength and quality of construction materials.

He was a member of ASTM, A2LA and Emmanuel Presbyterian Church of Bedford.

Charlie Rowland Jr. was born Aug. 20, 1920, in Fort Worth. Mr. Rowland was a lifetime resident of Fort Worth. He was owner of Rowland's Record Shop on Camp Bowie Blvd. for 32 years. After retiring in 1977, he pursued his lifelong hobby as an expert cabinet maker.

RICHLAND HILLS -- Doris Rogers Stricklin, 83, a retired postmaster, died Sunday in North Richland Hills.

Graveside service: 2 p.m. Thursday in Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park.

Doris Rogers Stricklin was born Aug. 25, 1913, in Saint Jo, Montague County, Texas. Doris was appointed postmaster in Saint Jo by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on May 19, 1936. At the time, she was the third-youngest postmaster in the United States. She resigned and retired in August 1951, just prior to the birth of her son, and moved to Richland Hills in March 1952. Due to birth injury, her son has a disability. She devoted the rest of her life working for and with numerous public and private schools and training centers in Tarrant, Dallas and Denton counties for education and training of children with disabilities. She served several years as a PTA representative for special education in the Birdville schools.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Saint Jo.

James Stroup was born March 11, 1931, in El Paso, and had lived in Fort Worth since 1968. His interests included woodworking and gardening. He was a faithful Christian and worshiped at Park Hill Church of Christ. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His Christian influence was felt and appreciated by his friends.

The family expresses appreciation to Community Hospice of Texas for the help extended to Mr. Stroup in his last days.

Howard E. Subke
HURST -- Howard E. Subke, 75, a retired General Motors pipe fitter, died Monday at a North Richland Hills hospital.

Graveside service: 10 a.m. Saturday in Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park. Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Howard Eugene Subke was born March 17, 1921, in Fort Worth.

He owned his own business before he began work for General Motors, where he retired after 21 years of service. He was a member of UAW Local 276. He was a World War II veteran, serving as a corporal in Company A of the 206 Engineer CBN.

Howard was a longtime member of Berry Street Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir. "Grandpa" was a great fisherman, avid bowler and had a love for golf. He was surrounded by a loving and devoted wife and a family dedicated to his care. We love him and will miss him, but will keep the memories as a reminder he is watching us from above.
