JoAnn L. Dennie
CROWLEY -- After a three-year battle with cancer, JoAnn Langston Dennie died at her home early Thursday morning. She was 67.

Funeral: 2 p.m. Monday at University Park Church, 1700 Rogers Road. Burial: Mount Olivet Cemetery.

JoAnn Langston Dennie was born March 14, 1929, in Fort Worth.

Before joining University Park Church in Fort Worth, she was a longtime member of Bethel Temple where she sang in the choir for 20 years, played viola for the church orchestra and performed in theatrical productions. Mrs. Dennie was also an accomplished comedienne who brought joy to young couples and mothers-to-be with satirical performances about marriage and motherhood.

She is most remembered by her family as a woman with deep Christian convictions who placed importance on love and forgiveness. Mrs. Dennie used those convictions to help anyone with whom she came in contact. Quick with words of encouragement, prayer and support, she often opened her home to those less fortunate than she. During the 1960s and '70s, she became known as "Mom" to countless young people who "adopted" her as their own.

Mrs. Dennie was a faithful and loving wife for 47 years. She found her greatest joy in making a home for her husband and raising her four children.

She was preceded in death by her father, James Wylie Langston; mother, Bessie Pearl Langston; two brothers, Cecil and Claude Langston; and one sister, Lois McKesson.

Survivors: Her husband, Ray Dennie; four children, Charles Ray Dennie, Aretes Reynolds, John Richard Dennie and Jeffrey Brian Dennie; seven grandchildren, Michael Joseph McBride, Charles Ray Dennie Jr., Courtney Ray Dennie, Mitchell Ray McBride, Roger Dale Reed, Joseph Andrew Dennie, Texanna Kay Dennie and Bessie Pearl Dennie; and two sisters, Clara Van Sickle and Jean Newman.

Doris Harmon Kardaras was born June 9, 1916, near Ardmore, Okla, and had lived in Fort Worth for 54 years. After completing Anadarko Business College, Doris moved to Washington, D.C., to accept the position of secretary to U.S. Rep. Jed Johnston, D-Okla., instilling in her a lifelong interest in politics. While living in Washington, she met and married her husband, Earl, in 1938. In 1943 they moved to Fort Worth. While living in Fort Worth, she owned a real estate agency, worked for the American Paint Horse Association and the National Cutting Horse Association. Until the time of her death, she worked with her son in his barbecue restaurant. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Earl Kardaras, in 1994.

She will be greatly missed.
