CORENA CADE ASHABRANNER, 92, passed away Jan. 4, 2001 in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was born in Luzon, Texas on Oct. 19, 1908 to Cal and Alice Cade. Mrs. Ashabranner had resided in Rockport, Texas for the past 41 years and had worked as a cashier at Kline’s Café for 20 years before her retirement. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Connie Ashabranner of Roswell, New Mexico and Joe Robert and Mary Ashabranner of Houston, Texas; one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley Leonard and Clifford Cuff of Rockport; 14 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and one great great grandson; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Services were held Jan. 7 at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home Chapel, Rockport, with interment following at Rockport Cemetery. Officating was Mrs. Ashabranner’s grandson, Rev. Jerry “Mike” McCreary. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Carl and Laylis Leonard, Richard Krnavek and Mark, Allen and Terry Ashabranner.

RAUL BENAVIDES, 59, passed away Jan. 6, 2001 in Aransas Pass, Texas. He was born April 30, 1941 in Aransas Pass. He was a commercial fisherman and a lifelong resident of Aransas Pass. He attended the First Christian Church in Aransas Pass. He is survived by his mother, Anestoria Benavides of Aransas Pass; three brothers, Fred Benavides of Corpus Christi, Texas, Miquel Benavides of Aransas Pass and Martin Benavides and his wife, Alicia, of Aransas Pass; three sisters, Virginia B. Lopez of Houston, Mary Benavides of Nashville, Tennessee and Sanjuana Martinez and her husband, Edward, of Aransas Pass. LEATRICE K. “LEA” CIRKAL, 85, passed away Jan. 5, 2001 in Rockport, Texas. She was born Jan. 12, 1915 in Zorn, Texas. She attended Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas. She moved to Rockport in 1977 from Fort Worth, Texas. She was a member and served as president of the Key Allegro Women’s Club in 1980. She was a member of the Key Allegro Garden Club, served on the Board of Directors of the Key Allegro Condominiums, and was a director of the Key Allegro Property Owners Association. She was also a member of ACMI and Rockport Center for the Arts, a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Sacred Heart Gregory Ladies. She was preceded in death by Elmer F. Cirkal in 1976. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas E. and Susan Cirkal of Denver, Colorado; one daughter and son-in-law, Bitsey and Michael Stuart of Houston, Texas; two granddaughters, Ashlea Stuart and Amy Stuart. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rockport. MELANIE LYNN MARTIN, 31, passed away Jan. 2, 2001 in Aransas Pass, Texas. She was born in Faribault, Minnesota on Oct. 12, 1969. She had been a resident of Aransas Pass for the past five years. She was a Customer Service Representative for MCI in Corpus Christi, Texas and a past employee of the Aransas Pass Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was a loving daughter, sister, and devoted mother. She is survived by her parents, Doug and Dorothy Mueller of Aransas Pass; six brothers, Stanley, Kevin, Keith and Tim Spicer of Minnesota, Daniel Spicer and his wife, Denice and Douglas Mueller and his wife, Tiffany, all of Kansas; six sisters, Marlene, Karen and Kathleen Spicer, all of Minnesota, Brenda Spicer of Colorado, Kristy Cisneroz and her husband, Abel, of Aransas Pass and Debra Mueller of Corpus Christi. PHYLLIS H. RUMMEL, 90, passed away Jan. 6, 2001 in Aransas Pass, Texas. She had been a full time resident of Rockport-Fulton, Texas since 1983. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. She was also a member and had served a term as president of the Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Texas. Mrs. Rummel is survived by her two sons, Philip Rummel and his wife, Jeanette, of Houston and George Rummel Jr. of Friendswood, Texas; three grandchildren, Jeane Rummel and Victoria Tudor and her husband, Doug, all of Houston and Holly Rummel of Friendswood. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Rockport.

Strieber
IRENE LANGWELL STRIEBER, 87, died on Jan. 6, 2001. She was born Dec. 30, 1913 in Galveston, Texas. Irene had resided in Rockport, Texas since 1971 and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was Sister Carolina Rita in the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio for 20 years. Moving to Victoria, Texas, she married Clifford A. Strieber Sr. in 1954, and upon his retirement moved from Victoria to Rockport, where Mr. Strieber died in July 1971. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two stepdaughters, Claire Strieber Harris and Kathleen Strieber. Survivors include a stepson, Clifford Andrew Strieber and his wife, Harriet, of Austin, Texas; a stepson-in-law, Charles Harris of New Orleans, Louisiana; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; two nieces, Carol Ann Menefee of Arlington, Texas and Anita Margaret Fuller of San Antonio; one first cousin, Stella Dury and numerous first cousins once-removed. Irene belonged to Gregory Ladies of the Sacred Heart, was a supporter of Aransas County Medical Services, the Texas Retired Teachers Association and the Key Allegro Woman’s Club. She was a teacher for 33 years, having taught a variety of subjects on various levels, the last of which was Special Education. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rockport, Texas with Msgr. Gregory Deane and Msgr. Louis Kihnemann as celebrants. GORDON BARKLEY SUTTON, 62, passed away Dec. 31, 2000 in Aransas Pass, Texas. He was born in St. Petersburg, Florida on Oct. 9, 1938. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a past resident of San Antonio, Texas, where he was the owner/operator of Sutton Properties prior to moving to Rockport, Texas in 1998, where he loved to fish. He is survived by one son, Gordon Barkley Sutton of Port Aransas; two daughters, Frances Robinson and her husband, Chad, of Gonzales, Texas and Janet Sutton of Providence, Rhode Island; four grandchildren, Kelsey Scofield, Samantha Robinson, Tristan Robinson and Lindsay Robinson. Graveside services were held Jan. 5 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. Wendell
JERRY WENDELL, businessman and community leader, peacefully concluded his happy and rewarding life on Jan. 5, 2001. He ended his struggle with cancer at the M.D. Anderson Hospice, Texas Medical Center, Houston, Texas. A native of Rockport, Texas, Wendell lived his entire life in the town he loved and proudly called ‘home.’ Though his business activities took him to far corners of the world, his roots remained firmly planted in the Coastal Bend. Jerry Wendell was born in Rockport on Jan. 1, 1926. He graduated from Rockport High School, and earned his degree at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. He excelled as an athlete, and starred as a fullback and offensive lineman on Trinity’s football squad. Wendell was an avid sportsman throughout his life, with a deep and abiding respect and affection for the land and waterways of South Texas. On Nov. 22, 1950, Wendell and Delo Caspary formed the partnership of Caspary-Wendell Industries, which was a marine fleet that provided service to the offshore oil industry. In August 1967, Caspary-Wendell merged with Santa Fe International in Santa Fe Springs, California. Caspary and Wendell, along with Sam Alboral and “Buster” Hennessey, formed American Offshore in 1970, and the Houston based fleet and business became a world wide operation. Wendell retired from his business career in 1981. Jerry Wendell and his family have been active in many civic and charitable endeavors in the community. In 1965, they inaugurated the Wendell Family Fireworks, and the Fourth of July event is a tradition for residents and visitors. Jerry Wendell is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jan; son Wayde Wendell and his wife, Laura, of Rockport and son, Shawn Wendell and his wife, Karin, of Sedona, Arizona; daughter, Jill Howell and her husband, Collins, of Houston; four grandchildren, Kathryn Wendell, William Wendell, Collins Howell Jr. and Gabriella Wendell; sister, Yvonne Fairbrother and her husband, Tom; extended family members George and Elizabeth More and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Private interment was followed by a memorial service on Jan. 9 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rockport, Texas with Msgr. Louis Kihnemann and Msgr. Gregory Deane officiating. Honorary pallbearers included Bill Noble, Phil Ernster, Burton Barnes, John Hancock III, Bill Berkley, Craig Sanders and Kenneth McCann. As a special tribute to Jerry Wendell, a fireworks display was presented on the evening of Jan. 9 at Rockport Beach. For those desiring, memorials may be made to Jerry’s favorite charities, Sacred Heart School, Rockport, Texas; M.D. Anderson Cancer Clinic in Houston or the Hospice at Texas Medical Center, Houston.

JAMES LEWIS COOPER, 71, of Aransas Pass, Texas passed away Jan. 24, 2001 at a local hospital. He was born Aug. 20, 1929 in Benton, Arkansas. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of VFW Post 2932 in Aransas Pass. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janie Cooper, in 1994. He is survived by his son, Ricky Lee Cooper of Beaumont, Texas and many friends and neighbors. Rosary was recited Jan. 28 at Charlie Marshall Chapel, Aransas Pass. Funeral services were conducted Jan. 29, 2001 at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home Chapel, Aransas Pass with Father James Hamilton officiating. Interment followed at Prairie View Cemetery.

VIRGINIA COPPER, 74, passed away Jan. 26, 2001 in Rockport, Texas. She and her husband, Clarence, were long time residents of Artisia, New Mexico before moving to Rockport four years ago. Mrs. Copper was preceded in death by her son, John J. Copper in 1990 and her husband, Clarence Copper in 1999. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Jihying Copper of Dearborn, Michigan and Thomas and Sharon Copper of Houston, Texas; one daughter, Kimberly Copper of Albuquerque, New Mexico and three grandchildren. She was born July 20, 1944 to Shellie and Annie Mae Crothers in Barlett, Texas and was a lifelong resident of Aransas Pass. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister. LUCKY HERRON, 87, passed away Jan. 23, 2001 in Rockport, Texas. He was born Nov. 7, 1913 in Woodsboro, Texas. He had been a resident of Rockport since 1952. He was a member of the Greater First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Pecola Herron of Rockport; three sons, Daniel Brooks and Joe Brooks, both of Rockport and Ronnie Ormand of El Campo, Texas; two brothers, Tobe Herron of Plainview, Texas and Varley “Jack” Herron of Rockport; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins of Victoria, Texas. EMMA C. McLESTER, 89, passed away Jan. 24, 2001 in Rockport, Texas. She was born Aug. 15, 1911 in Church Point, Louisiana to Arthur T. and Mary Elizabeth Smith. She had been a resident of the Rockport area since the early 1930s. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Rockport. JUDITH LYNNE MAITLAND was born a free spirit 59 years ago in Covington, Kentucky to Rex. L. and Lillian M. Scott. She was raised in the greater Cincinnati, Ohio area. She passed away at her home in Fulton, Texas on Jan. 26, 2001 in the loving care of her daughters. JANICE ELAINE SERRILL, 68, a resident of Aransas Pass, Texas since 1965, passed away Jan. 23, 2001 at a local hospital. She was born Oct. 25, 1932 in New Gulf, Texas to Henry and Helen Landrum. She loved the outdoors and hunted arrowheads for a hobby. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Gardner Serrill of Aransas Pass and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Services were conducted Jan. 26 at First United Methodist Church of Matagorda with Rev. Dottie Dumas and Rev. Harley Savage officiating. Interment followed at Matagorda Cemetery. WINNIE FAY PALMER BAKOS, 95, a resident of Corpus Christi, Texas since 1932, passed away March 19, 2001 in a local nursing home. She was born July 13, 1905 in Hext, Texas to Oliver Loftin and Della S. Sellers. She was the former owner/operator of a photography studio in San Antonio, several beauty shops in the Corpus Christi area such as Lechenstiens and Corpus Christi Naval Air Station, and she owned and operated the Sky Lark Lounge in Corpus Christi for several years. She was preceded in death by her son, Arthur Roscoe Adams and is survived by two sons, Loftin Palmer and his wife, Jerri, of Aransas Pass and Winnifred Elizondo and his wife, Sara Jane, of Corpus Christi; 11 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Services were conducted March 23 at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Prince officiating. Interment will be at Hext Cemetery, Hext, Texas at a later date.

Blaylock
LAVERNE L. BLAYLOCK, 92, of Denison, Texas and formerly of Ingleside on the Bay, died March 8, 2001 in Texoma Medical Center. Graveside services were held March 12 at Restland Cemetery in Dallas with Rev. Francis Raffalovich officiating. Mrs. Blaylock was born Feb. 6, 1909 in Greenville, Texas. She was the daughter of Walter C. and Mary Elizabeth Hultzman Lyday. She married Glen O. Blaylock on June 6, 1947 in Dallas. He died in December 1983. She was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and was a retired Civil Service worker with the Department of the Navy. Surviving are her daughter, Martha Valentine of Denison; sister, Mary L. Barbee of Dallas; sister-in-law, Georgia Mae Lyday of Durant, Oklahoma; grandson, Mark S. Valentine of Denison and great grandchildren, Shann Land Valentine, Susan Michelle Valentine and Taylor C. Valentine.

WENDY R. CAMPBELL passed away March 21, 2001. She was born May 22, 1929 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She had been a resident of Rockport, Texas for the past six years and worked as a computer consultant. She was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Rockport. She is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Reverend Dr. George L. and Jean Campbell of Sutton Quebec, Canada. A memorial service was held March 24 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Rockport. JO BETH JANECEK MIXON, 74, passed away March 21, 2001 in Rockport, Texas. She was born Nov. 21, 1926 in Runge, Texas to John and Amanda Janecek. She attended Incarnate Word College (1943-45) in San Antonio, earning a B.A. from Southwest Texas State University (1947), San Marcos, and earned an M.A. from Sul Ross University (1956), Alpine. Mrs. Mixon was a reporter for the San Antonio Evening News and Express (1948-50). She taught school in Runge from 1952 to 1965 and at Rockport High School and Rockport Elementary from 1965 to 1985, when she retired with a total of 31 years service. She was a member of the American Association of University Women at Corpus Christi, and also a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mrs. Mixon was preceded in death by her son, Clifford Mixon in 1997. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Joel Morris Mixon of Rockport; two daughters, Joan M. Clay and her husband, Larry H., of Kermit, and Maureen Mixon of Austin; one brother and sister-in-law, Kemp and Shirley Janecek of Runge; two sisters, Bernice Ruckman and her husband, Charles, of Karnes City and Geraldine Steen of Austin; one aunt, Norma Meyer of Victoria and three grandchildren, Amanda and Laura Clay, both of Kermit and David Clay of San Angelo. Rosary was recited March 25 at Charlie Marshall Chapel, Rockport. Funeral mass was celebrated March 26 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rockport, with Monsignor Louis Kihnemann as celebrant. Interment followed at Rockport Cemetery.

ANTONIO STONE “TONY” QUINTANILLA III, 53, of Ingleside, Texas passed away March 25, 2001 at a local hospital. He was born June 13, 1947 in Raymondville, Texas to Antonio and Antonia Quintanilla. Prior to moving to Ingleside six years ago, he was a resident of Portland, Texas. He served in the U.S. Army and was a retired auto salesman. He is survived by his wife, Verdonna Quintanilla of Ingleside; two sons, Anthony Quintanilla and his wife, Kelly, of Corpus Christi and Jason Scott Quintanilla of Portland; his daughter, Melissa Quintanilla McGeagh and her husband, Kieran, of Dallas; four brothers, six sisters and two grandchildren, Meaghan Peacock of Dallas and Bridget McGeagh, also of Dallas. Tate
FRED TOM TATE, 73, passed away March 17, 2001 in Corpus Christi, Texas after a short bout with cancer. He was born Feb. 12, 1928 in Harlingen, Texas to Tom R. Tate and Mabel Waters Tate of the Norias Division of the King Ranch. He was educated at the ranch school where his mother was the sole teacher for 40 years. He then attended Raymondville High, Schriner in Kerrville and graduated from Corpus Christi Academy. After a year at the University of Texas, he joined the U.S. Navy where he began his medical training. Upon discharge, he continued his education at New York Hospital Medical Center, Queens County, Long Island. He was a nurse anesthetist. He lived and practiced in North Carolina, San Francisco, New Orleans, McAllen and Corpus Christi. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Tommie Tate Moncrief of Kingsville and Alice Tate Boyer and her husband, Charles H. Boyer of Beeville. He is survived by a brother-in-law, Dr. M.P. Moncrief of Kingsville; nieces, Kate Spradlin of Dallas, Linda Morgan of Refugio, Camille Krech of Rockport; Diane Ray of Dallas, Monte Kay Fredrich of Dale, Lisa Turcotte of Sarita and nephews, Tom Boyer of Sinton, Damon Moncrief of Sheridan and Tate Moncrief of Hope, Texas. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 31 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Station Street, Port Aransas, Texas. CLARA S. TAYLOR, 92, passed away March 24, 2001 in Rockport, Texas. She was born Sept. 27, 1908 in Houston, Texas to James and Clara Sturm. She was a member of the Hibiscus Garden Club and the Woman’s Club in Aransas Pass. Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, W.H. Taylor and her granddaughter, Brenda Kutchke.
