LUPE LONGORIA, SR.
Prayer services for Lupe Longoria, Sr., 69, of Palacios, will be held at 7 p.m. Friday (Dec. 8) at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday ( Dec. 9, 2000) at the First Presbyterian Church of Palacios with the Rev. Samuel Puccio officiating. Interment will be at Palacios Cemetery.

Mr. Longoria was born July 9, 1931 in Palacios to the late Charlie and Faustina Rojas Longoria, Sr. He died Dec. 5, 2000.

He was a commercial fisherman and a Presbyterian.

Mr. Longoria is survived by his wife, Lydia Guerra Longoria; daughters and sons-in-law Hope and Richard Corbello of Houston and Brenda and Vincent Reina of Boling; sons and daughters-in-law Lupe Jr. and Julie Longoria., Ernest Longoria, Victor Longoria and Vincent and Laura Longoria, all of Palacios; sisters Eva Trevino and Dora Deleon, both of Palacios, and Marina Placenio of Clute; brothers Charlie Longoria Jr., Felix Longoria and Frank Longoria, all of Palacios, and Adam Longoria of Newport News, Va.; 20 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Ricardo Longoria; and sister Esmeralda Longoria.

Pallbearers are Lupe Longoria, III, Mark Longoria, Charlie Longoria, Jr., Freddie Longoria, Mark Latapie and Joey Mijres.
 

ALBERT SIDNEY ‘DUTCH’ REYNOLDS
A memorial service for Albert Sidney (Dutch) Reynolds, 87, will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 2, 2000 in the Chapel at The Hospice at the Texas Medical Center in Houston with Hospice Chaplain Jim Barclift officiating. Interment will be at the Palacios Cemetery.

Mr. Reynolds was born Aug. 6, 1913 in Palacios to David Hiram and Mary Powell Reynolds. He died Nov. 27, 2000.

He was a veteran of World War II serving with the 1881st Engineer Aviation Battalion in New Guinea, Leyte and Luzon. His peacetime occupation was that of geophysical seismograph surveying in many states with Taylor Exploration and Amerada Hess.

He is survived by nephews George Reynolds, Jr., and Elbert Reynolds Glaze; niece Edna Mayo Heath; great nephews Charles and John Glaze; great nieces Leanna Jackson and Sharon Reynolds; as well as Christopher Reynolds and Lauren Elizabeth Glaze.
 

MYRTLE FAYE REED
Funeral services for Myrtle Faye Reed, 89, of Palacios, will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 2, 2000 at the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. Leon Maxwell, former pastor of the First Baptist Church and Rev. Hollis Hoffman officiating.

Mrs. Reed was born Dec. 7, 1920 in Purvis, Tx. to farming parents Prior Calloway Burnett and Lucy Erella Box Burnett. She died Nov. 28, 2000 after a lengthy stay at Palacios Health Care and Valley View Health Care in Eastland, Tx. following a massive stroke in November 1990.

She settled in Palacios in 1946 where she met and married Percy Hillmon Reed. She dearly loved her Lord Jesus, her family, and her church and that is her legacy.

She is survived by her sons, Jack Allen Bradshaw of Eastland, Tx., Bobby Linden Bradshaw of Burnet, Tx., and William Walter Reed of Tampa, Fla.; daughters Alice Reed Haley of Albuquerque, N.M., and Mary Louise Reed Tucker of Melbourne, Fl.; sisters Opal Cox of Sun City, Calif., Frances Butler of Glen Rose, Tx., and Fern Kenneady of Dallas, Tx.; 20 great-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Percy H. Reed; sons Billy Dean Bradshaw and Carl Arthur Bradshaw, all of Palacios; her parents; and several of her siblings.

Pallbearers are Jack Bradshaw, Allen Bradshaw, Bobby Bradshaw, Gordan Bradshaw, Frank Haley, John Carrol Sardelich, Noah Haley, Ted Bates Jr., and Wayne Bradshaw.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Baptist Convention International Mission Fund, c/o First Baptist Church, 202 Main, Palacios, Tx. 77465.
 

HERBERT LEE ‘H. L.’ HENRY
Funeral services for Herbert Lee “H. L.” Henry, 88, of Palacios, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday (Nov. 24, 2000) at the First Baptist Church of Palacios with the Rev. Hollas Hoffman officiating. Interment will be at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Palacios.

Mr. Henry was born Sept. 27, 1912, in Broadus, Tx. to the late Rupert Lee and Ida Mabel Wall Henry. He died Nov. 21, 2000.

He attended Texas Tech University where he played football. He was a farmer, rancher and a pioneer in the introduction of Black Angus cattle into Matagorda County. He was former director of First National Bank in El Campo and a former school board trustee for Palacios ISD. He was a member and past master of the Palacios Masonic Lodge No. 990 AF&AM and was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Palacios.

Mr. Henry is survived by his wife, Johnnie Mae Kubela Henry of Palacios; sons, John Lee Henry of Garland, Tx., Herbert William Henry of Bay City and James Rupert Henry of Victoria; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: parents; and infant brother, Ernest Henry.
 

PATRICIA MILLER HOWARTH
Graveside services for Patricia “Pat” Miller Howarth of Bryan, Tex., will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at the Palacios Cemetery, with the Rev. Janell Blair officiating.

Mrs. Howarth, formerly of Palacios, died Sunday, Nov. 12.

Following graduation from Bates College and Katherine Gibbs Secretarial College, Pat worked for several years as a secretary to the Chairman of the Romance Language Department at Harvard University. She married John Howarth in 1945. They lived with their adopted daughter, Christina Joy, in Reading, Mass., for 28 years.

Pat took courses at the Northeastern University suburban campus and discovered her interest in the elderly. She took the first course for nursing home activities director and worked in this field until John retired in 1975 for health reasons. John was recommended to see a specialist at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, who was familiar with his type of ailment. On July 4, 1975, John and Pat sold out in Reading and headed west in the modern day “covered wagon,” a 20-foot motor home, pulling a small car with two bicycles on the roof. Pat often said that this was the beginning of many “great adventures.”

They found Palacios. Many productive years followed in a community they came to love. Pat resumed her interest in the elderly and instigated the forming and naming of the Friends of Elder Citizens senior project. Pat worked on all grant writing and publicity for the senior citizens nutrition center.

In 1983, Pat received the “Woman of the Year” award for her work in behalf of the seniors of Palacios and her efforts in the field of alcoholism. Pat enjoyed many years of participation and volunteering at the Palacios center. She wrote the “Senior Newslines” published in the Palacios Beacon for mnay years. Her one main love was the Senior Center and the Palacios community.

Her husband, John, a partner with her in the Senior Center project, died in 1984. She is survived by her daughter, Christina Irving; son-in-law JP Irving; two grandchildren, Jade Patrice and Justin Irving, all of College Station; and her sister, Marilyn Pomeroy of Newport, Rhode Island.

ROBERT LANDIS LAURENCE
Funeral services for Robert Landis Laurence, 44, of Bay City were held Nov. 2, 2000 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Brett Moreland officiating. 

Mr. Laurence was born April 15, 1956 in Palacios to Robert Darce and Janice Pledger Laurence. He died Oct. 31, 2000 at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

He was a member of the Baptist Church, a resident of Bay City the past 6 years and a former resident of Palacios.

Mr. Laurence is survived by wife, Karel Penick Laurence of Bay City; son, Austin Landis Laurence of Bay City; mother Janice Jones of Palacios; sisters Wanda Jane Harris of Lolita and Bobbie Kana of Palacios; maternal mother, Sadye Pledger of Friendswood. He was preceded in death by his father Robert and his sister Jean Laurence.
 

PAULINE ‘POLLY’ WHITE
Graveside memorial services for Pauline ‘Polly’ White, 89, of Palacios, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26 at Hawley Cemetery near Blessing.

Mrs. White was born March 24, 1911 in Allerton, Ill. to Nancy Rainey and Moses Leonard Axsom. She died Oct. 18, 2000.

She was Past Matron of Palacios Chapter #125, order of the Eastern Star, a member of Bay City Chapter $380 O.E.S., and worked many years as a dental assistant in the office of John W. Hart. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist Church.

She is survived by a grandson, Carl Vanderwindt of Los Angeles, Calif.; and several nieces and newphews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John C. White; foster parents, Fleeta and William Christian; a daughter, Diane Bevins; and two brothers, Everett Axom and Hobert Axom.
 

PAULA S. GARCIA

A Funeral Mass for Paula S. Garcia, 84, of Palacios will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. A Rosary was to be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 7) with funeral services pending at Palacios Funeral Home.

Mrs. Garcia was born June 7, 1916 in Mier y Noriega, Mexico. She died Nov. 6, 2000.

She was a lifelong member of St. Anthony’s of Padua Catholic Church in Palacios.

She is survived by her children, Lucy Garza of Freeport, Tx., Angie Ferrel of Houston, and Blas Garcia, Janie G. Penland, Lucio Garcia, Ramon Garcia Jr, Pauline Gomez and Joe Garcia, all of Palacios; 21 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ramon Garcia, Sr.; and a son, Jesse Garcia.
 

WALLACE GENE BARR

Memorial services for Wallace Gene Barr, 70, of Palacios, will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9 at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Janell Blair officiating.

Mr. Barr was born June 8, 1930 in Palacios to the late Jay Wallace and Mildred Juanita Hagood Barr. He died Nov. 4, 2000.

A lifetime resident of Palacios and a graduate of Palacios High School, he received a Mathematics B.S. degree from Texas A&I College before serving in the U. S. Marine Corps where he was honorably awarded a National Defense Service Medal. Following discharge, he began work at Alcoa Aluminum and retired in 1982. He was also a business partner in Palacios Marina and W & W Marine along with several shrimper trawlers. He received the Chamber of Commerce Marine Related Award in 1985. Mr. Barr was a member of the Masons of Texas Palacios Lodge #990, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry of Galveston, Shriners Arabian Temple of Houston, and American Legion Post #649 of Blessing. He served the Palacios Volunteer Fire Dept. for 44 years and was named Fireman of the Year in 1984 for his volunteer service benefiting the entire community.

He is survived by his 100-year old aunt, Sylva Barr Davenport of Memphis, Tenn., and cousins Doris Ann Barr of San Antonio and Richard Barr of Saudi Arabia. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, John Henry Barr.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Palacios Volunteer Fire Dept., Senior Citizens Center, or the First Presbyterian Day School.
 

GUADALUPE V. RODRIGUEZ

Funeral services for Guadalupe V. Rodriguez, 66, of Palacios, were held Nov. 3, 2000 at Trinity Baptist Church in Palacios with the Rev. Brett Moreland officiating.

Mrs. Rodriguez was born Dec. 24, 1933 in Corpus Christi to the late Manuel and Francis Colunga-Villarreal. She died Nov. 1, 200. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by daughters Rosie Ann Guerra of League City, Tx., Linda J. Zamora of Palacios, and Shirley Ann Rodriguez; brothers Pepe Villarreal and Manuel Villarreal, both of Aransas Pass, and Willie Villarreal; and 11 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Camillo Guerra.
 

GENE KOERBER
Graveside funeral services for Gene Koerber, 75, of Pasadena, Tx. were scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000 at the Palacios Cemetery in Palacios with Rev. Janell Blair officiating.

Mr. Koerber was born May 14, 1925 in Palacios to the late James Louis and Ina Mae Perryman Koerbe, Sr. He died Oct. 18, 2000.

He was a resident of Pasadena for the past three years and a longtime resident and band leader in the Houston area. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He is survived by a sister, Gertrude K. Hunt of Pasadena; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Melba Katz, and his brother, James Louis Koerber, Jr.
 

JANIE C. GONZALES
Funeral services for Janie C. Gonzales, 71, of Palacios were held Oct. 17, 2000 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tony Flores officiating. Internment followed at the Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Gonzales was born Dec. 27, 1928 in Woodsboro, Tx. to the late Valentin and Jesusa Yanez Canales. She died Oct. 15, 2000 at the Palacios Health Care Center in Palacios, Tx.

She was a member of the Baptist Church and a resident of Palacios for the past 44-years.

Mrs. Gonzales is survived by her husband, Celso Gonzales, Sr. of Palacios; daughters and sons-in-law, Norma and Gilbert Flores, Jr. of Palacios, Nelda and Eric Bergamyer of Port St. Lucie, Fl., Mary Jane and David Chadwell of Irondale, Al.; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Sophia Sandate of Orange Grove, Tx., Celso, Jr. and Josie Gonzales of LaPorte, Arthur and Elida Gonzales of Austin; sisters, Isabel Sandate of Corpus Christie, Josie Tristan of Harden, Hilda Ramero of Brazoria, Ordilla Lozano of Fort Worth, Mary Stanley of Portland; brothers, Pete Canales of Portland, Jesse Canales of Pearland, Gilbert Canales of Indiana, Henry Yanez of Houston; 17 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, John Anthony and Joseph Daniel Gonzales, Christopher Ray and Joseph Rene Rutherford, Richard Sandate, Jr. and Richard Ray Torres.
 

CHARLIE DEAN PITTMAN
Funeral services for Charlie Dean Pittman, 65, of Palacios, were held Oct. 15, 2000 at the First Presbyterian Church in Palacios with Rev. Sam Starks and Revs. Andy and Janell Blair officiating. Internment was in Palacios Cemetery.

Mr. Pittman was born Dec. 11, 1934 in Lockhart, Tx. to the late Lenford C. and Lillie Mae Harris Pittman. He died Oct. 12, 2000 at Citizen Medical Center Hospital in Victoria, Tx.

He was a resident of Matagorda County the past 34-years, and a member of First Christian Church.

Mr. Pittman is survived by his wife, Peggy Pittman of Palacios; two daughters and a son-in-law, Peggy Juanice “Sissy” and Brett Taylor of San Marcus, Tx., Karen Pittman of Mt. Belvieu; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charles Luther and Rhonda Pittman of Pledger, Tx., Richard “Rick” Pittman of Baytown, Tx.; two brothers, Austin and Lonnie Pittman both of Lockhart, Tx.; 7 grandchildren, Melissa, Kristy and Richard Daugherty all of Baytown, Nicholas Pittman of Fairchild, Tx., Kaci Taylor of San Marcus, Roxanne Pittman of Pledger and Trish of Las Vegas, Nev. He was preceded in death by his sister Lola Mae Resinger.

Pallbearers were Ladell Sump, J.W. Luedke, Tom Quirk, Richard Sanders, Fred Huitt, Dan Tucker, and Marvin Hammond.
 

MELVIN JOSEPH VALENTA
Funeral services for Melvin Joseph Valenta, 60, of Bay City were held Oct. 10, 2000 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City with Father Casey Jarzombek officiating. Internment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Mr. Valenta was born January 29, 1940 in Lane City to Joe and Theresa Polasek Valenta. He died Oct. 7, 2000 in Bay City.

He was a 1958 graduate of Wharton High School and received his degree in Geology from Texas Tech University. He married Virginia Ruth Lothridge on Feb. 20, 1960 in Palacios. Mr. Valenta was a 37-year resident of Bay City and a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. He was employed as a engineer for Celanese for the past 37-years. He loved to hunt, garden and raise cattle and emus.

Survivors include wife, Virginia Valenta of Bay City; daughters, Denise Valenta and husband, Eric Vazquez, of Georgetown, Valerie Henson and husband, Bruce, of Bay City, and Venessa Valenta of Houston; and grandchildren, Christina and Alyssa Henson. Mr. Valenta was preceeded in death by his brother, Robert Valenta in 1995.

Pallbearers were David Valenta, Robert Dale Valenta, Lawrence Valenta, Franklin Valenta, John Caron and Scott Smith. Honarary pallbearers were all his many friends and co-workers at Celanese.
 

STELLA TALBOT STORK
Funeral services for Stella Talbot Stork, 84, of Palacios, were set for 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, 2000 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Hollas Hoffman officiating. Interment will be at Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Stork was born Feb. 3, 1916. Formerly of Alabama, she was a resident of Palacios for the past 50 years. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Palacios.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, June and William Jones of Theodore, Al., and Lola Ginger and Jerry Neimeyer of Channelview, Tx.,; a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald Lamar and Betty Stork of Palacios; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers are Ted Bates, Jr., Jerry Neimeyer Jr., Bryan Rushton, Michael Jones, Joseph Denman and Jonathan Markel.
 

NELLIE ANN TEFFETELLER FOSTER
Funeral services for Nellie Ann Teffeteller Foster, 59, of Blessing, were held Oct. 7, 2000 at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home. Interment was at Hawley Cemetery.

Mrs. Foster was born Nov. 18, 1940 in Maryville, Tenn. to the late James Louis and Chloe Perry Teffeteller. She died Oct. 5, 2000 in Bay City.

She is survived by her husband, Earl Foster, of Blessing; her mother of Buffalo, Tx.; a daughter, Shelley R. Foster of Blessing; a son, Troup Foster, Jr. of Texas; a sister, Betty Jo Phillips of Liberty Hill, Tx.; a brother, Jerry Teffeteller of Dallas; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father and a grandson, T. J. Foster.
 

BOBBY PRICE BABCOCK
Funeral services for Bobby Price Babcock, 85, of Austin, were held Oct. 7, 2000 at the University Presbyterian Church with Rev. San Williams officiating. Interment was at Austin Memorial Park.

Bobby was born to Norma Lilla Harris and Robert Lee Price on Dec. 6, 1915 in Palacios, Texas. She died Oct. 3, 2000 with her family by her side, after battling lung cancer.

Mrs. Babcock graduated from Palacios High School and from John Tarleton Jr. College in Stephenville, Tx. After college she worked as an accountant in Bay City, Tx. until her marriage to Frank E. Babcock, Jr. on May 17, 1940. Early in their marriage they made their home in Louisiana, living most of that time in New Orleans where their two daughters were born. Upon retirement, they moved to Austin in 1957 which has been home ever since. Frank passed away in 1984.

Bobby had a gentle and loving spirit and a zest for life that was an inspiration to those around her. She always saw the best in every situation and never had an unkind word to say about anyone. She loved to travel and visit many places around the country and around the world; her favorite trips were to Hawaii and Santa Fe with her family and trips to far off places with her traveling buddy, Elvira Wyatt. She was a devoted member of the University Presbyterian Church for over 40 years. Fondly known to many as “Mrs. B.”, Bobby leaves many cherished memories of times she and Frank spent with their daughters and their friends in Wimberley, Creedmoor, and at Lake LBJ.

She is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Alice and Randy Randolph of Cincinnati, Ohio and Carolyn and John Turney of Austin; two granddaughters, Sara and Mollie Randolph of Cincinnati; three step-grandchildren, Jennifer and Lindsey Turney of Austin and Bo Turney of Denver, Colorado. She is also survived by two sisters, Maxine and her husband, Reverend Carroll Ray of Burleson, and Nancy and her husband, Harry Sisson of Houston; brother-in-law, Burnell Waldrep of Weatherford, several nieces and nephews and many lifelong friends. She was preceded in death by a sister, Cherry Price Waldrep, a niece, Norma Waldrep, and a nephew, Neal Waldrep.
 

RUBY ELEANOR MATHIS
Funeral services for Ruby Eleanor Mathis, 91, of Cape Carancahua, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, 2000 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios with Rev. Hollas Hoffman officiating. Interment will be at Olivia Cemetery.

Mrs. Mathis was born May 7, 1909 in Siloam Springs, Ark. to Zechariah and Hattie Cupp. She died Sept. 28, 2000.

She was a resident of Cape Carancahua for the past nine years and a former resident of Waller, Tx. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Palacios and was a retired cashier/waitnress. She was also an oil paint artist.

She is survived by her daughter, Madge E. Ammons of Cape Carancahua; a son, James B. Armstrong of Texas City; a sister, Marie Fergerson of Cherry Hill, Calif.; five grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
 

DON MARQUESS
Memorial services for Don Marquess, 64, of Salado were held Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000 at the Heartfield Funeral Home Chapel in Belton, with the Rev. Skip Blanchatt officiating. Interment was at Calvert Cemetery in Calvert. He died Sept. 1, 2000 in a Temple hospital.

Mr. Marquess was born July 27, 1936 in Temple to the late Harry Clyde Marquess and Frances Rather Marquess. He was a graduate of Palacios High School and the University of Texas-Austin and formerly served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. He worked in sales for WilsonArt in the 1970s and was owner-operator of MarJon, Inc., in Atlanta, Ga., from 1976 to 1992. He moved back to Bell County, Texas in 1992 and was co-owner of Horseshoe Wood Products at Temple until his death. He was a Methodist.

Survivors include the widow, Eleanor “Ellie” Francis Marquess (to whom he was married on March 15, 1960 in San Antonio) of Salado; two sons, Scott Marquess and his wife, Robin, of Charlotte, N.C., and Keith Marquess and his wife, Lynn, of Montgomery, Ala.; one daughter, Michelle Marquess of Arlington; one brother, Jim Marquess and his wife, Rita, of Spricewood; and two grandsons, Jeffrey Scott Marquess, Jr., and Benjamin Marlow Marquess.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
 

ROBERT JAY “BOB” WILKINSON
Funeral services for Robert Jay “Bob” Wilkinson, 84, of Bay City, were held 3 p.m., Monday, Sept. 25, 2000 at the First Presbyterian Church in Bay City. The Rev. Allen Anderson officiated, followed by interment at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck. He died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000 at the Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton.

Mr. Wilkinson was born in Collegeport on Sept. 9, 1916 to the late Walter William and Helen Leonora Gossett Wilkinson. He graduated from Bay City High School, where he delivered the salutatory address, in 1934. In 1938, he graduated from the University of Texas-Austin with a degree in journalism. At UT, he was elected to Sigma Delta Chi, a national honorary and professional journalism fraternity, and worked on the university newspaper, The Daily Texan, writing the first story about the UT tower illuminated in orange following football victories.

In 1938, he became sports editor and a news reporter for the Bay City Daily Tribune. On Dec. 28, 1939, he married Luceile Huebner, daughter of Lillian Hurst and Marion Taylor Huebner, in the First Presbyterian Church of Bay City. On Jan. 1,1940, he became editor of The Herald, a weekly Bay City newspaper. In World War II, Mr. Wilkinson joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and while stationed at the Corpus Christi Naval Training Center, he was editor of The Beam, the base newspaper. He left to serve in the Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Lind, with the Third and Fifth Fleets, and at wars end, he was present at the Japanese surrender ceremony board the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay on Sept. 2, 1945.

He received his honorable discharge from the Navy in February 1946, and in June of that year published the first issue of the Bay City News. Eleven years later, he sold the News to devote full time in the oil business with his father. The business of W.W. Wilkinson & Sons was dissolved after his father’ death in 1968, and he became an independent oil operator and lease broker. His son, Robert J. “Bobby” Wilkinson joined him in 1977, becoming the third generation of Wilkinsons in the oil business.

Mr. Wilkinson was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, a founding member of the Bay City Country Club and Matagorda County Texas Exes, a member of the Petroleum Club of Houston, and several professional and civic organizations.

Survivors include: wife, Luceile of Bay City; son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Peggy Wilkinson of Bay City; daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Clayton Lake of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandchildren, Malynn Ashcraft of Broken Arrow, Okla., Clay Lake of Las Vegas, Nev., Chris Wilkinson and Mindy Wilkinson of Bay City; great-grandchildren, Morgan Reber, Maurice “Buddy” Ashcraft III and Sarah Ashcraft, all of Broken Arrow, Okla.; aunt, Jean Gossett of Salesville, Ohio; brother-in-law, Raleigh Huebner of Bay City; sister-in-law, Jean Huebner of Bay City; nephews, Jack Wilkinson, Jr. of Houston, Kent Cummins of Elgin, Don Huebner of Buffalo, Tex., Doug and Bill Huebner of Bay City; nieces, Helen Fitch of Corpus Christi, Carol Bascom of Tucson, Ariz., Marion Lester of Fort Worth, Janet Considine of Midland, and Jean Richardson of Bay City.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Cummins of Bay City; two brothers, John Paul Wilkinson of Midland and W.W. Wilkinson, Jr. of Bay City; and brothers-in-law, Robert Huebner of Palacios and M.T. Huebner of Bay City.
Pallbearers were Chris Wilkinson, Clay Lake II, Clay Lake, Jack Wilkinson, Darrell Hertel and Jack Conner.

FLOYD A. DAWSON
Funeral services for Floyd A. Dawson, 91, of Warren, Ind., scheduled 1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 22, 2000 at Glancy Funeral Homes-H. Brown & Son Chapel, Warren with Pastor Tim Helms officiating, followed by interment in Asbury Cemetery, Montpelier, Ind. Mr. Dawson died Sept. 18 at the United Methodist Memorial Home in Warren.

A native of Jackson Township, Ind., he was born Jan. 11, 1909 to the late Harrison ‘Mack” Dawson and Corena M. Brown Dawson. A lifetime resident of Wells County, Ind., he worked for the county highway department for over 30 years, was a farmer, past president of the Twin Bridge Conservation Club in Mt. Zion and sexton of the Asbury Cemetery.

Survivors include the widow, Mary Louise McMillan Dawson, two whom he was married on Oct. 17, 1936; five sons, David and Linda Dawson of Palacios, Tex., Dean and Jackie Dawson of Marion, Ind., Daniel and Barb Dawson of Berne, Ind., Dennis Dawson of Dickinson, Tex., and Dallas Dawson of Warren, Ind.; one sister, Mabel Booher of Fort Wayne, Ind.; one brother, Al Dawson of Hartford City, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marjorie Ellen Dawson; and 11 brothers and sisters.
 

ALTA MAE BYERS BISHOP MOORE

Mrs. Moore was born Oct. 4, 1912 in Henderson County, Tx. to the late Granville Marcus and Mollie Pearl Reed Byers. She died Sept. 19, 2000. She was a resident of Edna since 1977 and a former longtime resident of Palacios.

She is survived by four daughters, Bobbie Burditt, Edwina Fenner and Mary Brown, all of Edna, and Charlene Rigdon of San Antonio; sons Clarence Bishop of San Antonio and Kenneth Bishop of South Padre Island; a sister, Ann Charnetski of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; 24 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ernest “Eddie” Bishop, and her second husband, Charlie Moore; a son, Ernest Edward Bishop; two sisters, Opal Williams and Edith Harris; and two brothers, Thurman Byers and R. C. Byers.
 

JANIE L. CERDA

Mrs. Cerda was born March 8, 1933 in Olivia, Tx. to Jose Angel and Guadalupe Navarro Leijha. She died Aug. 26, 2000 in Baytown.

She was survived by her mother of Bay City; daughters Jacqueline Ramirez of Palacios, Belinda Castillo of Bay City, and Dolly Craft of Baytown; a son, Joe Anthony Cerda of Brown-wood; a sister, Frances Guerra of Bay City; brothers Ross N. Leijha of North Carolina and Lupe Leijha of New Mexico; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
 

KERRY JAMES RESSLER
Funeral services for Kerry James Ressler, 55, of Mineola, Tx. and formerly of Palacios, were held Sept. 17, 2000 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hollas Hoffman officiating. Interment was at Palacios Cemetery.

Mr. Ressler was born Jan. 26, 1945 in Bay City to Joseph ambrose and Katherine Jean Dodd Ressler. He died Sept. 14, 2000. He was a resident of Mineola for the past 12 years and a member of the Baptist church.

He is survived by his parents, Joseph and Katherine Ressler of Palacios; a son, Jim Ressler of Chamblee, Ga.; a sister, Robin Grace of Dripping Springs, Tx.; and two grandchildren.
 

JOSEPHINE IZORAH HALLIDAY LEADFORD
Funeral services for Josephine Izorah Halliday Leadford, 86, of Mertzon, Tx., formerly of Hallettsville and Palacios were scheduled for 10 a.m. Sept. 16, 2000 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Brett Moreland officiating.

Mrs. Leadford was born Aug. 28, 1914 in Corsicana, Tx. to Mary Tennie Jones and George Roger Holiday. She died Sept. 12, 2000 at San Angelo, Tx.

“Nanny” as everyone called her, was a caring and loving, but strict mother, grandmother and great grandmother to many. She was a resident of Palacios most of her life and graduated from Palacios High School in 1932. She has resided in Metzon, Tx. with her daughter Carla and son-in-law, Jim for the past 4 years.

ALICE “MOMA” STOREY
Graveside services for Alice “Moma” Storey, 79, of Du- Quoin, Ill., were scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000 at the Palacios Cemetery. A memorial service was set for Sept. 16 in San Dia, Tex.

A former longtime resident of Palacios, where she was known as “Moma,” Mrs. Storey died Aug. 31 in Illinois. She was born March 30, 1921.

Survivors include the husband, Clyde Storey of DuQuoin, Ill.; four daughters, Judy and Les Parker of Los Fresnos, Tex., Jackie and Leo Russell of DuQuoin, Ill., Beth Storey of East St. Louis, Ill., and Leona and John Hebret of Arizona; one son, Daniel Storey of Houston; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sons, James Paul Buzzard, Spiegel Storey, Jr., and David Earl Storey. 
 

VIRGINIA NELI ‘GENNIE’ MOTES OLDHAM
Funeral services for Virginia Neli ‘Gennie’ Motes Oldham, 78, of Palacios, were scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15 at the First United Methodist Church in Palacios with Rev. Charlie Parker officiating. Interment will be at Hawley Cemetery near Blessing.

Mrs. Oldham was born Sept. 14, 1921 in Blountsville, Ala. to the late Herbert and Inez Doyle Motes. Shed died Sept. 12, 2000 at the SCCI Hospital in Victoria following a lengthy illness.

After graduating high school in 1940, she joined the U. S. Navy Waves after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. She was stationed in Washington, D. C. and was a cryptologist specialist. It was during World War II that she met and later married Army 1st Lt. Ney Oldham, Jr. from Palacios. Their military wedding was one of the first held at the Patuxent River Naval Chapel after the war.

The couple moved to Palacios after their honorable military discharges in 1945. Ney and Virginia owed and operated Oldham’s Dry Goods and Sporting Store. After Hurricane Carla in 1961 they built and operated The Fountain Terrace Motel. Mrs. Oldham was a member of the First Methodist Church.

In 1948, ‘Gennie’ and some of her friends started the Harmonie Club to raise money to light the baseball field as well as money for other local benefits.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Lydia V. and Dennis Schuetz of Palacios, Nancy Lea and Glenn Howard of Victoria; a son, Ney Oldham, III of Palacios; grandchildren Lee Schuetz, Rebecca Howard, Glenn Wesley Howard, and Nolan and Ney Oldham IV; eight nieces; two nephews; and 17 great -nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ney Oldham, Jr.; an infant daughter, Ann Lydia Schuetz; a sister, Joan Annette Motes; and three brothers, Doyle Motes, William ‘Sonny’ Motes, and Charles E. Motes.

Pallbearers are Donald McAfee, Damen Williams, Richard Scott, Mark Olsovsky, Dennis Bartosh and Ted Bates. Honorary pallbearers are Woodrow Wilson, Steve Farsutt, Bob Trull, Lowell Johnson, Billy Hamlin and George Sparks.
 

JOSEPH WAYNE MICHALIK
Funeral services for Joseph Wayne Michalik, 34, of Quincy, Illinois were held Sept. 9, 2000 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios with the Rev. Craig Miller officiating. Interment followed at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.

Mr. Michalik was born June 17, 1966 in Palacios, Tx. to Charles Walter, Sr. and Dianna J. Brown Michalik. He died Sept. 3, 2000 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Il.

He was a member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church in Quincy, Il.. and a former member of the First Baptist Church in Palacios, Tx. He was a resident of Quincy the past two years, where he was the Director of Purchasing and Transportation at Prince Agri-Manufacturing in Quincy.

Mr. Michalik was a 1984 graduate of Palacios High School and a 1990 graduate of Sam Houston State University in Agribusiness. After graduation he went to work for Cargill in Fort Worth, Tx. On Sept. 19, 1997 he married Dana D. Rickett in San Antonio, Tx.

He is survived by his wife, Dana of Quincy; parents, Charles and Dianna Michalik, Sr. of Palacios; two sons, Ronnie Michalik of Denton, Tx. and Hayden Michalik of Quincy, Il..; stepson, Trevor Moody of Quincy, Il..; sister, Roxane Michalik of Round Rock, Tx.; brother and sister-in-law, Charles Walter, Jr. and Jennifer Michalik of Austin; nephew, Hunter Michalik; and niece Abby Michalik of Austin, Tx.

ROBERT W. “BOB” ACKERMAN
Funeral services for Robert W. “Bob” Ackerman, 77, of Blessing, were held Sept. 9, 2000 at the Hawley Cemetery in Blessing with Rev. James Collins officiating. Interment was in Hawley Cemetery.

Mr. Ackerman was born May 14, 1023 in Blessing, Tx. to John Gilbert Ackerman and Mary Edith Nolen Ackerman. He died Sept. 7, 2000 in Bay City.

He was a lifelong resident of Matagorda County and a member of Collegeport Presbyterian Church. He was a retired Rice Farmer and Cattle Rancher and a member of RVOS & a veteran of the 8th Air Force. He was a former member of the American Legion, Post #649 of Blessing and a former member of the North American Limousin Association.

Mr. Ackerman is survived by his wife, Margie Lorene Neuszer Ackerman of Blessing; by his daughters, Eileen Ackerman of Austin and Gale King of Blessing; and by a son, Wayne Ackerman of Blessing. He is also survived by six grandchildren and two great-granchildren.

Honorary pallbearers are his grandchildren, Julie Ann Wesselman, Dennis Eugene Wesselman, Cody Steffek, Abby Ackerman, Amy King, and Cari King.

Mrs. Martino was born Sept. 21, 1921 in Victoria, Tx. to the late Reyes and Santana Torres Diaz. She died Sept. 5, 2000 at North East Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Tx.

She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and a resident of Palacios for the past 62 years.

Mrs. Martino is survived by her husband, John O. Martino of Palacios; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Delores and Harry Castro of Richmond, Tx., Rosalie and John Lenihan of San Antonio, Tx.; sisters, Josefa Rodriguez of Port Lavaca, Tx., Benita Cano of Kemah, Tx.; brother, Porfidio Diaz of Corpus Christie, Tx.; 4 grandchildren, Evett Hamlin and husband, Philip, of Wharton, Marcus Castro and Samantha Castro of Richmond and Adam Rodriguez, Jr. of San Antonio; 4 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. LESTER WRIGHT
Funeral services for Lester Wright, 78, of Palacios, were held Sept. 6, 2000 at Out Redeemer Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dale Leland officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery.

Mr. Wright was born Sept. 28, 1921 in Turtle Bay, Matagorda Co., Tx. to the late Buel Benjamin and Minnie Leota Stevens Wright. He died Sept. 3, 2000 at the Palacios Health Care Center in Palacios.

He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and a life long resident of Palacios.

Mr. Wright is survived by his wife, Amie McGraw Wright of Palacios; brother and sister-in-law, Vernon and Alice of Palacios; grandson, Jamie Kruse of Palacios; and 2 great grandchildren, Tristan Scott and Steffen Bailey Kruse of Palacios. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Wright.

Pallbearers were Fred, Bobby, and Darrell Buckley, Bobby Walton, Kenneth Smith and Greg Burnett. Honorary pallbearers were Jamie Kruse and Reed Bowers.
 

ALTON H. KELLEY
Funeral services for Alton H. Kelley, 76, of Anahuac, Tx., were held Aug. 29, 2000 at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel in Port Lavaca with Rev. John R. Fisher officiating. Interment, with full military honors, was at Francitas Cemetery.

Mr. Kelley was born Dec. 18, 1923 in Needville, Tx. to the late Gladys Laxson and Anthus Kelley. He died Aug. 27, 2000.

Mr. Kelley was a retired pot tender at Alcoa-Point Comfort. He was a lifetime member of V. F. W. Post 8557 in Lolita, a member of the Alcoa 25 Year Club, and the Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Point Comfort.

He is survived by his wife, Nora Louise Kelley, of Anahuac; a daughter, Phyllis M. Howell of Kelseyville, Calif.; a son, Alton L. Kelley of Smith Point, Tx.; sisters Hazel C. Koch of Palacios, and Edith Lucille Arnold of Blessing; grandchildren Richard Kelley, Glenda Hellyer, Brandy Nowlin, Rhonda Kelley and Desiray Taylor; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.

HARRY MARSHALL HEATH, SR.
Memorial services for Harry Marshall Heath, Sr., 57, of Wharton were held Aug. 30, 2000 at College Heights Baptist Church in Wharton with the Rev. Don Hurley officiating.

Mr. Heath died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000 in a Houston hospital after an extended illness. He was born May 5, 1943 in Wharton to the late Fred Francis and Mary A. Zahn Heath. A lifelong resident of Wharton and a Baptist by faith, he was a salesman for Allison Distributing for 18 years before his retirement.

Survivors include a daughter, Candy Marcell Blackwell of Bay City; four sons, Marshall C. Murphy of Palacios, Charles Robert Heath of Houston, Fred Heath, Sr. of El Campo; and Harry Marshall Heath, Jr. of Victoria; three sisters, Billie Jean Eckert of Brenham and Mary F. Hudspeth and Patricia A. Shahani, both of Wharton; a brother, Fred William Heath of Lockhart; and eight grandchildren.

Mrs. Slone was born April 15, 1906 in Louise, TX to the late Albert Sidney and Nellie Hughes Johnson. She died Aug. 21, 2000 at her residence.

Mrs. Slone was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Palacios, a resident of Palacios since 1924 and a 50 year member of Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post # 2467.

She is survived by a daughter, Gay Harrison of Palacios; brother-in-law, R. J. Boland of Louise, TX; six grandchildren—Janet Harrison, Sandra Miller and her husband Bill, Holly Claybourn and her husband Clayton, and Shelley Mayfield and her husband Kent, all of Palacios, Slone Harrison of Chattanooga, TN, and John Harrison and wife Lisa of Houston; and 12 great grandchildren.

NETTIE H. LIGUORI
Funeral services for Nettie Huddleston Liguori, 81, of Brooklyn, N.Y., were held Aug. 22, 2000 at La Bella Funeral Chapel in Brooklyn, N.Y. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery.

Mrs. Liguori was born August 21, 1918, in Olivia, to the late John and Myrtle Hadley Huddleston. She died Aug. 20, 2000. She was a retired executive of Value Line in New York and a Baptist.

She is survived by sons, Gary Liguori of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Ronald Liguori of Victoria; sisters, Ola Mae Peterson and Estelle Johnson, both of Olivia, Lucille Pargman of Austin and Geneva Mercer of Waco; brothers, Teddy Huddleston of Neddlewall and Calvin Huddleston of Palacios; and four grandchildren—Michele Liguori and Philip Liguori, both of New Jersey and Christopher Liguori and Nicole Liguori, both of New York. She was preceded in death by husband, Patrick Liguori; parents; brothers, John Huddleston and Odell Huddleston.
 

TONY BUCKLEY
A Funeral Mass for Tony Gonzales Buckley, 78, of Palacios, was held Aug. 9, 2000 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Father Charles Dwomoh officiating. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

On Jan. 14, 1922 in San Antonio, Texas the Lord blessed our family with the birth of Tony Gonzales Buckley. Mr. Buckley was born on Jan. 14, 1922 in San Antonio to the late Fred and Sefernia Gonzales Buckley. He died Aug. 4, 2000.

He is survived by his loving companion and wife, Pauline Ruiz Buckley. Together they nurtured nine children, 21 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by: sons and daughters-in-law—Joe and Pete of Palacios; Fred and his wife, Dana, and their four children also of Palacios; and Tony Patrick and his wife, Robin, of Nevada and five beautiful children; his daughters and sons-in-law—Delia and Jimmy Rodriquez and their two children of Houston; Romona and Robert Sisco and her three children and two grandchildren of Kentucky; Linda and Robert Killion of California; Betty and Robert Salter and her three children of Indiana; and Rosemary and Jack L. Pierce II with their three children of Washington state; his sister and brother-in-law Amie and Lester Wright of Palacios; his brother Alex of Palacios; and several nieces and nephews.

Tony was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, a life member of good standing with Queen-Hamlin V.F.W. Post 2467, and a member of The Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 1919.

Employed by Alcoa Aluminum for 31 years, he retired on Jan. 1, 1983. He worked in a variety of positions, some of which included civil maintenance and re-firing plants calcination department. For the majority of his career with Alcoa he worked in the smelter utility and pots rooms

He was also a veteran of World War II having serving in the Army from 1942-46.He served as a rifleman and squad leader for twelve months in the 7th Armored Division in France, Belgium and Holland. As a member of the 1550 Service Support Unit, he was wounded in action in Holland on Oct. 4, 1944. For his service to his country Tony was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for being wounded in action, the Good Conduct Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Medal with one bronze service star, the American Theater Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.

Pallbearers included: Fred, Tony, Pete, Joe and Cory Buckley, Fred Buckley, Jr., Christopher Pierce and Jack L.Pierce II.
 

VIVIAN COX ALLEN
Funeral services for Vivian Cox Allen, 90, of San Antonio, were held Aug. 3, 2000 at the Palacios Funeral Home, with the Rev. Charlie Parker officiating. Interment was at Palacios Cemetery. She died July 31 at the Methodist Specialty & Transplant Hospital in San Antonio.

A resident of San Antonio for 4 1/2 years, she had previously resided in Pasadena for 56 years and was a member of Westfall Baptist Church in Pasadena. She was born Sept. 5, 1909 in Richmond, Tex., to the late Robert Collier Cox and Elizabeth Schley Cox.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth and Roy Lee Hogg of San Antonio and Linda and Ron Matlock of Dallas; son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Jane Allen of Palacios; four grandchildren, Melody Allen of Dripping Springs, Raymond Allen of Hyannis, Mass., and Bruce Allen and Robert Hogg of San Antonio; and three great-grandchildren, Rickie Lee Keim of Dripping Springs, and Jennifer and Brianna Hogg of San Antonio.
 

FLOYD EUGENE (GENE) HENDERSON
Floyd Eugene (Gene) Henderson was born in Austin on May 4, 1944 to Floyd and Myrlene (Sue) Henderson. He joined the U.S. Marines in 1962. He reached the rank of Sergeant E-5, serving as an MP and an aircraft launch/recovery technician in Okinawa and Vietnam. Upon discharge, Mr. Henderson returned to Austin and worked as an expediter before becoming a member of the Austin Fire Department. He retired in May, 1944, with 24 years of service, and relocated to Palacios to enjoy his passion for fishing. He suffered a massive stroke in 1995 and passed on at home on July 30, 2000.

He leaves behind his wife Vickie; daughters Meredith Mae Henderson and son Jacob; Wendy Eddleman and Lucynda Reaves; son Chris Eddleman; step-fathers O.A. (Jake) McGuffin and Trinidad Estrada; brothers Tommy Rutledge, Wayne Henderson, Marvin Henderson and Mike McGuffin; sisters Alice Estrada and Josephine Barrett; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Henderson is a reborn Christian and joined in heaven his father and step-mother, Floyd and Dorothea Henderson; his mother Myrlene (Sue) Henderson, and his nephew Cricket Henderson. His memorial service was held at Sky-View Baptist Church in Austin on Friday, August 4, 2000.
