Funeral services for James Clay Slone, Jr., 72 of Houston, and formerly
of Bay City, will be held Monday, October 22, 2001 at the First Baptist
Church in Bay City with the Dr. Michael Zimmerman officiating. Interment
will follow at Hawley Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday morning
at the Bay City Funeral Chapel until noon.

Funeral services for Mr. John W. Reynolds, 77, of Palacios will be

Mr. Leo Guy Burns
Funeral services for Mr. Leo Guy Burns, age 84, of Bay City were held

and burial were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Smiley Baptist Cemetery
in Smiley.

Doris Hodges, 82, of Bay City passed away January 31, 2002 at the Legacy
Nursing Center in Bay City.
Clinton Allen McGinty
Funeral services for Clinton Allen McGinty, 21, a longtime Atoka area
resident, were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 30 at Brown's Funeral
Service Chapel in Atoka with Lloyd McElhaney officiating. Burial will be

Funeral services for Evelyn Fields Thomas, 82, of Bay City, will be

KANA
George C. Kana, Sr., 82, of Palacios, passed away Tuesday, September
17, 2002. He was born October 15, 1919 in Dubina, Texas to Stephen and
Frances Muzny Kana.
He was a resident of Palacios since 1946, member of St. Anthony Catholic
Church, a member of VFW Post 2467 of Palacios, a veteran of World War II
serving in the U S Army, and was a 45-year member of the Palacios Volunteer
Fire Dept., serving from 1952 to 1997.
He is survived by: daughter, Betty Boyd of Austin; daughter-in-law,
Barbara Kana of Kerrville; sons, Edward J. Kana and wife Margaret of Lake
Jackson, Tony Kana of Palacios, Joe C. Kana and wife Bobbie of Palacios,
George C. Kana, Jr. of Palacios and Bobby Kana and wife Dena of Santa Fe;
sister, Edith Katzfey of San Antonio; brothers, Henry Kana of El Campo
and Edmund Kana and wife Lorraine of El Campo; grandchildren, Chris and
Carl Kana of Lake Jackson, Monica Kana Herring of Houston, Eric Kana and
wife Vanessa of Blessing, Keri Soltow and husband Jeff of Loop, Texas,
Amy Jo Kana of College Station, Daniel Hopkins of Austin, Blaine Boyd of
Austin, Katelyn Kana of Victoria, Ty Kubena and Hunter Kana of Santa Fe,
Kelcie and Ashley Kana of Kerrville; and by his great grandchildren, Jenna
Brook Kana of Blessing and Logan Soltow of Loop, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Frances Kana; parents,
Stephen and Frances Kana; children, Jennette, Raymond, Mary Ann, Michael,
and Daniel Kana; sisters, Marie Kana, Frances Kruppa, Josie Bacak and Annie
Zapalac; and brothers, Joe Kana and Steve Kana.
The Rosary was recited at 7 p.m., Friday, September 20, 2002 at St.
Anthony Catholic Church.
The funeral mass was at 10 a.m., Saturday, September 21, 2002 at St.
Anthony Catholic Church with the Revs. Charles Dwomoh, Gary Janak, and
Michael Lyons officiating.
Interment followed at Holy Cross Cemetery in El Campo, Texas .
Pallbearers were Eric Kana, Chris Kana, Carl Kana, Daniel Hopkins,
Mel Anders, and Pete Estrello.
Contributions may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church Building Fund,

KRENEK
Paul Frank Krenek, 45, of Bay City died Friday, September 20, 2002
in Laplace, La. He was born November 23, 1956 in Bay City to Alfons and
Lucille Krenek. Paul was a member of St. Roberts Catholic Church, a graduate
of Tidehaven High School and lived in Matagorda County most of his life.
He was a millwright by trade and employed by Orion in Norco, La.
He is survived by: mother, Lucille Krenek; brothers and sisters-in-law,
John and Fae Krenek, Joe and Teresa Krenek, Robert Krenek, David and Patricia
Krenek, Fred and Nataly Krenek, Al and Lisa Krenek, James and Stacy Krenek;
sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Charles Giger, Kathryn and Jim
Connally, Elizabeth and Mike Billingsley, Nancy and Ronnie Pasak, Christine
and Chris Craft; numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, Alfons Krenek, and his brother
Jerry Krenek.
A rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Sunday, September 22, 2002 at St. Peter’s
Catholic Church with Father Samuel Appiasi officiating. Interment will
follow at St. Peters Catholic Cemetery.

BOLLING
Barbara Carol Bolling, 67, of Palacios died at her residence November
30, 2002. She was born July 30, 1935 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma to the late
Joe and Rhuie Lucille Hopkins Tafolla. Mrs. Bolling was a resident of Palacios
since 1948 and a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
She graduated from the University of Houston, Victoria and was a Certified
Public Accountant.
She retired from the Port Authority of Point Comfort, and was an accountant
with Lacey Lowry Bookkeeping Service as well as operating her own accounting
business.
Mrs. Bolling was an honorary and past President of the Harmony Club,
member of and past President of the Alapha Club, member of the Palacios
Library Board of Directors, member of and past President of the friends
of the Palacios Library, Treasurer of the Robert Duran Caring and Sharing
Food Pantry Board, Treasurer of the Palacios Beautification Committee,
member of the Monday Night Bridge Club and was the newly elected director
of the Palacios Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include: two daughters and a son-in-law, Lucile Kay Wyatt
of Dallas, and Susan Carol and John Kopacz of La Ward; sister, Frances
Ballard of Lawton, Okla., brother, Bill Tafolla of Portage, Mich.; and
one granddaughter, Kimberly Susan Wyatt of Dallas.
Funeral service was Monday, December 2, 2002, at the First Presbyterian
Church of Palacios with the Rev’s Janel Blair and Charlie Parker officiating.
Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be J. W. “Billy” Jenkins, Jr., Alan Huddleston, Lacey
Lowry, Bill Stransky, Chipper Holt and Richard Meyer.
Honorary Pallbearers were Joe Jenkins, Butch Bowers, Ralph Clements,

REESE
Shirley Jean Reese, 78, of Bay City passed away Monday, December 2,
2002 at the Legacy Nursing Center in Bay City. She was born on August 13,
1924 in Salisbury, Missouri to parents George Gilbert and Lillian Folkes
Steinebach.
She was a devoted housewife and mother and a long time member of Calvary
Baptist Church in Bay City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Vance Eugene,
and two sisters, Clara Grantham and Helen McEntire
She is survived by: sons and daughters-in-law, Don E. and Sherrie Reese
of Onalaska, Texas and Ronnie N. and Bonnie Reese of Houston, a daughter,
Darla Kay Vinson of Bay City, and a sister, Pauline Grantham; five grandchildren;
and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, December 4, 2002 at Calvary Baptist
Church with the Rev. Chester Sassman officiating.
Burial will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.
Visitation was Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Bay City
Funeral Home Chapel.
Pallbearers will be T.J. Middleton, Jonnie J. Kovar, Jr., Owen Middleton,
George A. Grantham, Norman W. Reese and Kenneth W. Grantham.

SAIN
Samuel Lewis Sain, 72, of Bay City died at Matagorda General Hospital
November 30, 2002.
He was born July 5,1930 in Graford, Texas to the late Samuel Richard
and Dolly Jane Wright Sain. He was resident of Bay City the past 35 years.
Mr. Sain was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
His generosity and caring will be greatly missed.
His devotion to his family and our Lord was boundless.
Survivors include: wife, Margie Matura Sain of Bay City; daughters,
Penny Sain Cachia and Nikki Sain Barker both of Bay City; step-sons, Joey
Billeau and his wife, Crystal of Markham, and Chris Billeau of Bay City;
three granddaughters, Madison Traniello of Bay City, Shelby and Caitlin
Billeau both of Markham.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Agnus Minton and brothers,
Harry and Richard Sain.

First United Methodist Church of Van Vleck with the Rev’s Sam Starks and

Nelva Maurine Stewart, 88, passed away on Monday, December 2, 2002.
She was born June 12, 1914 to Charles and Mary Lokey in Huffsmith,
Texas and was a resident of Wimberley, Texas.

Wimberley; son, Carroll Ray Stewart Jr. and wife Linda of Houston; six
grandchildren, Donna Colabuono of Driftwood, Texas, Sue Ann Clark of Dallas,

Stewart of San Marcos and Shannon Cooper of Wimberley.

Don Gordon Burt, 46, of Sweeny, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003.
He was born Wednesday November 21, 1956 in Bay City.
He is survived by: wife, Sharyl D. Burt of Sweeny; father, Charles
G. Burt of Bay City; sister and brother-in-law, Robbie and James Johnson
of Bay City; stepchildren, Jeremy Aiken of Angleton, Jason and Amanda Bridges
of Angleton, Patricia Bridges of Houston, Stephanie and Scott Pearcy of
Bastrop; three grandchildren; one niece; one nephew; numerous other relatives
and friends.
He was preceded in death by: mother, Goldie Joines Burt.

Dorothy Joan Owen, 63, of Van Vleck, passed away Thursday, May 22,
2003 at the Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton.
She was born in Wharton, Texas on December 7, 1939 to parents H.L.
and Marty Moore Bock.
She was a housewife and a long time member of the Harvest Time Church.
She is survived by: husband, Leo Owen of Van Vleck; and her children,
Ricky and Carol Hahn of Waller, Kenny and Susan Love of LaWard, Tuffy and
JoBeth Tweedle of Palacios, and Joey and Pamela Kennedy of Cedar Lane;
10 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Sunday, May 25, 2003, at 2:30 p.m. at the
Harvest Time Church with the Rev. Jim Hardaway officiating. Burial will
follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Odessa Mallett Stewart Parks, 79, of Cedar Lane passed away Thursday,
May 22, 2003 at her residence. She was born September 9, 1923 in Littlefield,
Coryell County, Texas to parents James Washington and Hattie Mallett Stewart.
She was ninth of ten children and was a life-long Baptist.
She was a loving mother and granny, and loved hunting and fishing.
On Sept. 11, 1939, she married Claude Parks in San Saba, Texas.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, her husband, a son, Claude
Gerald; grandsons, Bruce Wayne and Kenneth Lynn Parks; brothers, T.J. ,
N.B., Bernard, and Leon Stewart; sisters, Dollie Alexander, Mary Anna Petty,
and Laura Griffay.
She is survived by: daughter, Doris Cates of Cedar Lane; sons, William
H. and wife Margie Parks of Markham, Tommy J. and wife, Donna Parks of
Livingston, and Thurman D. and wife Kay Parks of Sargent; sisters, Frances
Parks and Nancy Doyle of Breckenridge; ten grandchildren; and 15 great
grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2003 at the First
Baptist Church in Markham with the Rev. Howard Harper officiating. Burial
will follow a graveside service at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 25, 2003 at the China
Creek Cemetery in San Saba, Texas. Services are under the direction of

WRIGHT
James “Joe” Wright, Sr., 84, of Bay City died May 21, 2003 at Matagorda
General Hospital in Bay City.
He was born June 29, 1918 in Virginia City, Va. to the late Jasper
Daniel and Maude Orender Wright. Mr. Wright was a member of the City Baptist
Church and a resident of Bay City since 1953. He was a veteran of WWII
serving in the U. S. Army, a Life Member of the Philip H. Parker VFW Post
#2438, and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Area #3232.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years Jessie Tweedle Wright; son and
daughter-in-law: James, Jr and Elizabeth Wright all of Bay City; daughter:
Linda Sullivan of Santa Fe, Texas; sisters: Virginia Hyatt of Canton, IL,
Elsie Burton, and Eula Lecco both of Princeton, W.Va. Marjorie Goodson
of Seminola, Fla.; brothers: Kenneth Wright of Wyoming, IL, John Wright
of Princeton, W. Va., Fred Wright of Goldstar, Ga; nine grandchildren and
15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother Earl Junior
Wright.
Funeral Service were held at 2 p.m. May 24, 2003, at Taylor Bros. Funeral
Home with the Rev. Lee Watson officiating.
Interment followed at Cedarvale Cemetery.
Military honors were under the auspice of Philip H. Parker VFW Post
#2438.
Pallbearers were members of the VFW Post #2438.

Mary Vest Younts, 87, of Bay City died May 22, 2003 in Angleton.
She was born August 10, 1915 in Bay City to the late Joel Waverely
and Elizabeth Battaile Vest.
Mrs. Younts was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She
graduated from Bay City High School in 1933.
She taught first grade for 31 years with the Bay City Independent School
District.
Survivors include: her only daughter and son-in-law, Lynda and Wayne
(Coonie) Roberds of Angleton; two grandchildren, Clint Roberds and wife,
Jana of Jasper, Texas, and Robyn Roberds of Sugar Land; and one great granddaughter,
Madison Roberds of Jasper.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years Albert Younts;
sisters, Maney Gusman and Frances Grebe and brother, Billy Vest.
Funeral service will be 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Taylor
Bros. Funeral Home with the Rev. Pauline Harvey officiating.
Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck.

COOK
Oleta Nelseen Cook went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 16,
2003, at the age of 86. She was born August 27, 1916, to the late Marvin
and Lula Campbell in Culleoka, Collin County, Texas. A 4th generation Texasn
and 54-year resident of Matagorda County, Mrs. Cook was a long-time member
of the Fellowship Class of First United Methodist Church of Bay City.
Mrs. Cook is survived by: daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Charles
Williams of Bay City; two sons, Ronnie Cook of McKinney and Clif Cook of
Houston; daughter-in-law, Sheri Fry; grandchildren, Susan and Bill Parish
and Melinda Williams of Bay City, Elizabeth Cook and Brad Cook of Dallas,
Will Cook of Houston, Jessica Cook of Dickinson; great-grandchildren Cody
Williams and Catie Williams of Bay City, Caleb Cook of Houston; and great-great
grandson Dalton Williams of Bay City; one sister and brother-in-law, Faye
and Dub Pingleton and sister-in-law, Helen Campbell, all of McKinney.
Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her husband, Marcus M. Cook; one
son, Gordon Lee Cook of Bay City; and two brothers, H.G. “Jack” Campbell
and Leslie E. Campbell.
Pallbearers include Will Cook, Brad Cook, Cody Williams, Danny Pingleton,
Mark Finlay, and James Williams.
Visitation will be Tuesday, June 17, 2003, from 6-7 p.m. at Taylor
Brothers Funeral Home. Services will be Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at 2 p.m.

of Bay City, Texas will be held Saturday, June 21, 2003 at 11 a.m. at East

Friday, June 20, 2003 from 1 until 8 p.m. at Green’s Mortuary. Family will
receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m.

HIPP
Infant Sarah Elise Johnson Hipp was born at Matagorda General Hospital
in Bay City to Jerrica Johnson and Jordan Hipp on June 15, 2003. She later
passed away that day to be with the Lord, her Heavenly Father at 2 p.m.
Sarah Elise is survived by her parents, as well as maternal grandmother,
Pamela Johnson all of Bay City, and paternal grandparents , Cindy Luedecke
of Bay City, and Gregg Hipp of College Station.
Graveside funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2003,
at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Lee Watson officiating.

KING
Charles Merl King, age 76, passed away Saturday, June 14, 2003 at a
Waco hospital. Services will be at 9:30am Thursday, June 19, 2003 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey
Chapel, 6101 Bosque Blvd., Waco with the Rev. Charles Conner and the Rev.
Steve Jackson, pastor of Chalk Bluff Baptist Church, officiating. Burial
will follow at Moore Cemetery in Chalk Bluff. Visitation with the family
will be from 5-7pm Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at the funeral home.
Charles was born in Rochelle, Illinois, on February 20, 1927, to Burton
King and Daisy May Lane. He moved to Houston in 1931 and then to Boerne
in 1937 where he attended Boerne Elementary School. He then attended high
school in Victoria, Texas, and later attended University of Houston where
he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1948 and a Master of Arts in 1949. He began
teaching at LaMarque High School before his graduation from the University
of Houston. He earned his Masters of Religious Education from the Southwestern
Baptist Theological Seminary in 1953.
He married Catherine Tobias on March 20, 1954, and they resided in
Bay City, Texas where he taught high school English. They moved to Waco
in 1959, and he taught at Waco High School and Richfield High School. His
first college teaching job was in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1965 and in 1966,
he was hired as the first chairman of the English Department at McLennan
Community College. He retired after 20 years of service.
Charles was a member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church for many years
where he taught Sunday School in the preschool department. He was currently
a member of Chalk Bluff Baptist Church.
He was also very active in many poultry clubs and won numerous awards.
Many of his awards were featured in the national Poultry Press magazine.
Charles loved his garden and was well known for his green thumb. He was
always a wealth of information which he shared with everyone. He was also
an amateur veterinarian and was always surrounded by animals.
He also performed volunteer work with the Court-Appointed Special Advocate
(CASA) and worked with numerous foster children. He also volunteered with
the West Ambulance Service.
He is survived by: his wife of 49 years, Cathy King; daughter, Tami
Cox and husband, Joel; son, Kevin King and wife, Apryl; son, Mark King
and wife, Brenda; grandchildren, Beau and Kyle Earley, Scott and Toby King
and BreAnne and Bailey King; sister, Rosabel Coldiron and husband, Dewey;
brothers, Jim Stogsdill and wife, Diane and Gilbert Stogsdill and wife,
Connie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Everette Rayburn, Johnny Sauls, Wallace Hand, Elmer
Goldsmith, George Brinegar, and Walton Strickland.
