Roger Craig Teagarden
Roger Craig Teagarden, 50, of Seguin, passed away peacefully Thursday,
Oct. 18, 2001, at Guadalupe Valley Hospital.
Roger, the son of Gilbert (Mickie) Teagarden and Nelda Norton, was
born Aug. 17, 1951, in Midland County, Texas. He was the grandson of jazz
trombonist Jack Teagarden.
Roger’s first passion in life was to sail on the never-ending waters.
He was an accomplished sailor who won many races and an excellent water
skier.
Those of us who knew him will never be on a boat again without thinking
of Roger and his true love of the water. His second passion was to write
poetry to the ones he loved. It was his way of expressing his heart.
Roger’s third passion was to find humour in life and make everyone
everywhere share in his laughter. One could say he was a lighthouse — the
brightest light on the darkest days — which made everyone feel welcomed
and safe.
These are excerpts from a letter from Michael, Roger’s step-son: “Roger
is the only dad I ever had growing up. What I liked most is he never tried
to replace my father, but was just Roger. When he was in my life, I had
the best time I could have had. He never yelled at me or hurt me in any
way. I feel so special to know that Roger really liked me as his son. He
was a role model and I looked up to him for advice. I have so many pictures
in my head (of our shared times) that will last me forever. He was such
a strong person to me. I have this deep strong memory of Roger saying my
name (Michael) in his long Texas drawl; man, I have repeated it in my head
over a hundred times. I know he is happy now. I will make a definite stride
in my life to make someone else happy like he taught me. ‘I will always
be smiling for you, Roger; you, who shared such an important part of my
life.’”
From daughter, Sami: On November 27 ‘97 Daddy sent me my first letter.
A quote from that letter is: “looking forward to spending time with my
daughter and my grandson. My instant family and I thank God for it. Thank
you! You mean a lot. I love you sweetheart. Roger.”
I met my father for the first time on Dec. 22 ‘97. Little did I know
then that that would be the first and last time we would hold one another.
With the three years to follow we became one another’s confidants. There
was nothing that we could not say to one another. Daddy was always supportive,
understanding, never judgmental and always very soothing. When I cried
I could feel his arms around me as he would tell me everything would work
out.
Two weeks ago we once again found one another. It was as if we had
never missed a beat. We talked, we laughed, we cried. As always we ended
our conversation with, “I love you Daddy!” “I love you too sweetheart.”
Roger is survived by his step-mother, Mickie Teagarden, Linda Hannasch
and family, Roger’s daughter Samantha (Steven) Price and Roger’s grandchildren,
Preston Murphy, Siena and Sophia Price (Idaho); his adored family, Kimberly
Teagarden (Fla.) and her sons, Michael D’Addario (Ariz.) and Chris (Joelle)
D’Addario and their children, Jordan and Cade (Calif.); Roger’s sister,
Pamela Teagarden and her daughters, Stevi Teagarden and Dani Teagarden
(Was.); a maternal uncle, Bud Norton (Ore.) step grandparents, Avis and
Lewis Armstrong (Seguin); and his dear friend and caregiver, Sharon Wotipka.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made
to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church or Nueva Esperanza, El Paraiso, Honduras
— both at 201 E. Nolte St, Seguin, TX 78155.
