Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
She was born Jan. 29, 1911, in Mt. Pleasant to David Newman and Edna
Greer Newman. She married William Roscoe Phillips. He died March 11, 1977.
She was a homemaker, and she was a foster grandparent at the Denton
State School for 12 years. She was a Methodist.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 14, at the Minter
Cemetery in Lamar County near Paris.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 13, at DeBerry Funeral
Directors in Denton.
Survivors include a son, Ronnie Phillips of Denton; two daughters, Connie
Bell of Denton and Beatrice Johnson of Huntsville; nine grandchildren;
and eight great-grandchildren.

Fort Worth ... Ona L. "Bunchie" Barkley, 86, of Fort Worth died Friday,
March 10, 2000, at her home.
She was born Feb. 5, 1914, in Florence, Ala., to James Walter "Doc"
Wesson and Annie Claire Thomason Wesson. She married J.F. Barkley Jr. He
preceded her in death.
She was a homemaker.

She is survived by two great nieces and a great nephew.

Mrs. Pennell was a clerical worker for Cisco Food District in California.
She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Aubrey and Veterans of
Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Amarillo, where she served as District 9 treasurer.

three stepchildren, Trudy Pawson of Irving, Barry Pennell of Corinth and
Tomya Hall of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; and sister, Patricia McCue of Lake

Clara Wilcoxson
Clara Onyta Wilcoxson, 83, of Denton died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at
her home.
She was born Nov. 14, 1916, in Josephine to James Robert and Lillian
Octavine Rampy.
Mrs. Wilcoxson was a member of First Baptist Church of Garland, and
before her retirement she was a store manager for Goodwill Industries.
Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 14, in the chapel of DeBerry
Funeral Directors in Denton. Burial will follow in Laurel Land Cemetery
in Dallas.
Visitation will be 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Krum - Hazel Rose Morris, 53, of Krum died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at

Mrs. Morris was born May 30, 1946, in Pueblo, Colo.

Hilda Floyd Bovell
Hilda Floyd Bovell, 87, a lifelong resident of Denton died Saturday,
March 11, 2000,, after a lingering illness at the Careage Place Nursing
Home in Pilot Point.
She was born Feb. 21, 1913, in Grapevine to K.S. and Emma (Schmitz)
Floyd. She married C.J. Bovell May 24, 1940, in Bonham.
Mrs. Bovell was a graduate of Denton High School and attended C.I.A.
now Texas Woman's University. She was a dental assistant to the late David
F. Speck, D.D.S. at her retirement. She was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian
Church in Denton.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers, Charles S.
and J.B. Floyd.
Survivors include her twin sister, Helen Martin of Las Vegas, Nev. sister,
Margaret Duncan and her husband Knox of Dallas; a brother, Tom Floyd and
his wife, Emma Lou of Denton; sister-in-law, Maurine Floyd of Denton; and
dear friends, Mildred Eckels and Frances; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 15, at Roselawn Memorial
Park in Denton with the Rev. Steve Plunkett officiating.

Decatur - Janela Ruth Cox Burr, 49, of Decatur, died Sunday, March 12,
2000, at her residence.
She was born March 24, 1950, in Belen, N.M., to Carl Harvey and Viola
Alyne (Bone) Cox. She married Jeff Lynn Burr on Oct. 13, 1990 in The Colony.
Mrs. Burr worked for Imperial Manufacturing in Decatur and as a secretary.
She attended Central Church of Christ in Decatur.

Alvord - Robert Ray Ponder, 66, of Alvord, died Sunday, March 12, 2000,
at his residence.
He was born Nov. 3, 1933 in Oklahoma, to James and Katie (Ashley) Ponder.
He married Christene Lovell in 1963 in Hereford. He was a veteran of the
U.S. Army.
For the past year, Mr. Ponder was a door greeter at Wal-mart in Decatur.
He had also worked as a truck driver.
He attended Living Word Assembly of God in Alvord.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, at Living Word Assembly
of God in Alvord. M.L. Milton will officiate. Burial will be in Alvord

Mrs. Clark was head teller at Farmers and Merchants State Bank in Krum
and was president of the Parent Teacher Association.

Gladys Evelyn Hamby, 86, of Denton died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at
her daughter's home in Irving.

Mrs. Hamby was born Sept. 7, 1913, in the Liberty community in Denton
County to John Riley Lindley and Katy (Keller) Lindley.
She was the widow of Austin Thomas Hamby, to whom she was married Oct.
10, 1933, in Prosper.
She was a member of Poltechnic Methodist Church in Fort Worth and a
homemaker.

of Fort Worth; son, Tom Hamby of McKinney; two sisters, Grace Hamby of

Pilot Point - Paul Kelly Bryant, 42, of Pilot Point died Monday, March
13, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Bryant was born March 23, 1957, in Corpus Christi. He married Linda
Langley Jan. 16, 1988, in Corpus Christi. He was a pipefitter.

Keller - Billy Joe Carlton, 66, Keller, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000,
at his home.
He was born January 29, 1934, in Mansfield, to Claud and Ruth (Knowles)
Carlton. He served in the U.S. Air Force and married Sue Been on May 30,
1959, in Carlsbad, N.M.
Mr. Carlton retired as plant supervisor of Jagoe-Public Company in Denton.
He was a member and deacon at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Keller.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 16, at Mt. Gilead Baptist
Church. Nathan Tucker will officiate. Interment will follow at Prairie

Mrs. Walters was born Feb. 19. 1921, in Dallas County.
She was a stock control clerk and retired in 1981 from Kroehler Manufacturing
Co.
Mrs. Walters was a long time member of Button United Methodist Church
in Little Elm.
She completed high school in Irving and married L.L. Walters in June
1945.
Mr. Walters died in 1994 and her brother, John Robert died in 1927.
Survivors include one brother, G.H. "Billy" Hardin of Grapevine; one
niece; two nephews; and seven great-nieces and nephews.
Chester Morris, Jr
Chester Morris, Jr, 69, of Denton died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at his
home.
Mr. Morris was born May 23, 1930, in Handley, Texas, to Chester and
Margaret Ann (Shahan) Morris. He married Margye Cox in Denton on July 5,
1946. He attended Texas Christian University. He was a member of the Hitch
and Pitch Camping Club and Grace Temple Baptist Church.
Mr. Morris was the owner and operator of Chester Morris Chrysler-Plymouth
for 20 years and prior to that the Chester Morris Chevrolet for 20 years.
Funeral service will be at noon Thursday, March 16, in the chapel of
Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Christian
officiating.

volunteer for the Brazosport Museum of Natural Science at Lake Jackson.

Phillips. She attended public schools and married Felbert M. Hudson in
1968. He died in 1981.
Mrs. Hudson was a retired supervisor from Russell Newman Manufacturing.
She was a member of Church of Christ in Argyle.

2000, at her home.

Mrs. Robertson was born Oct. 4, 1927, in Hobart, Okla., to Johnny T.

She married Joel Robertson in November 1997 in Denton. She was Methodist.
Mrs. Robertson was a member of the Elks Lodge and Veterans of Foreign
Wars.

of Pine Top, Ariz.; stepson, Dennis Monroe Hendon of Aubrey; brothers,
John Duggan Biffle and Phillip Patrick Biffle, both of Gainesville. One

Tyler - A memorial service for Robert James McMurrey Jr., 79, of Tyler
were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, at First Baptist Church in Tyler
with the Rev. Dr. Michael Massar officiating.
A family graveside service was held at Rose Hill Cemetery under the
direction of Lloyd James Funeral Home of Tyler.
Mr. McMurrey died Monday, March 13, 2000, at his home in Tyler.
He was born Aug. 21, 1920, in Lovelady to Robert J. and Lucile Mainer
McMurrey. He lived most of his life in Tyler. He was a graduate of Culver
Military Academy in Culver, Ind., and he attended the University of Texas,
where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity.
He served as an Army Air Corps flight instructor during World War II.
In 1945, he became an independent oil and gas operator, and he worked in
the ranching and timber industries.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Southwest Texas Cattle Raisers'
Association, Willow Brook Country Club, Texas Rose Festival Association
and Order of the Rose.
Survivors include his wife, Julia Faye McMurrey of Tyler; a son, Robert
James McMurrey III of Valley View; three daughters, Julia McMurrey and
Betty McMurrey Barrett, both of Tyler, and Amy McMurrey of Dallas; a sister,
Eugenia McMurrey Moran of Wichita Falls; three granddaughters; and nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Anne McMurrey Swanson; and a daughter,
Martha Jill McMurrey.
