Paul Edwin Swift
Paul Edwin Swift, 87, formerly of Sparta, passed away Sunday, December 10, 2000, at Wharton Nursing in Pleasant Hill.
Swift was the son of James Daniel and Annie Dunn Swift.
He was a retired store manager of Jenkins and Darwin's Department Store.
Swift was preceded in death by his parents; one step son, Sid Buck; and one grandson, Edwin Douthit.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Swift of Sparta; two daughters, Betty Brown of Harrison and Paulette Douthit of Ringgold, Georgia; two step sons, Joe Buck of Hixon and Mike Buck of Indiana; three step daughters, Wilda Goleb and Carolyn Barrett both of Crossville and Shirley Walker of Florida; and several grandchildren; and nephews, Bill Swift of Doyle and Jimmy Swift of Sparta.
Services will be held Tuesday, December 12, 2000, at 1 p.m. at Bilbrey Funeral Home in Crossville with burial in Crossville City Cemetery.

Loyd Goolsby
Loyd Goolsby, 81, of Gainesboro, passed away Friday, December 8, 2000, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Goolsby was born October 3, 1919, in Jackson County, to William Fowler and Cynthia Ann Buck Goolsby.
He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Goolsby was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Survivors include four sons, Harlon Goolsby of Gainesboro, Junior Goolsby of Clay, Michigan, Troy Goolsby of Madison Heights, Michigan, and
David Calap Goolsby of Warren, Michigan; five daughters, Virginia Louise Blanken of New Tazewell, Loure Barlow and Barbara Wheeler both of Gainesboro, Martha Burton of St. Claire Shores, Michigan, and Wanda R. Brown of Mt. Juliet; four brothers, Herman Goolsby and Buddy Goolsby both of Gainesboro, Omer Goolsby of Whitleyville, and Aaron Goolsby of Sparta; five sisters, Marie Stewart of Center Line, Michigan, Estelene Nemore of Baxter, Sue Bilbrey of Virginia, Thelma Jean Long of Gainesboro, and Ida Mae Carter of Whitleyville; and several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
Services were held Sunday, December 8, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Anderson Funeral Home in Gainesboro with burial in Turkeytown Cemetery in Clay County. Bro. O. L. Ransom, Jr. officiated.

Robin Lynn Boruff
Robin Lynn Boruff, 42, of Sparta, passed away Thursday, December 7, 2000.
Boruff was born July 12, 1958, in Miami, Florida, to Jack Carmen and Hazel Marinello Jones.
She was the company administrator of Bill Boruff Chrysler-Plymouth-Dodge-Jeep.
Boruff was preceded in death by her father.
Survivors include her husband, Richmond Boruff of Sparta; two daughters and one son-in-law, Jackie and Ronnie Brock and Jenna Boruff all of Sparta; two sons, Chris Boruff and River Boruff both of Sparta; mother, Hazel Marinello Jones of Cookeville; one sister, Stephanie Emery of Corona, California; one brother, Jessie Jones of St. Claire Shores, Michigan; one nephew, Keith Jones of St. Claire Shores, Michigan; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Barbara and Bill Boruff of Sparta; and two aunts, Mary Gilbert of Sebring, Florida and Ann Durham of Avon Park, Florida.
Services were held Sunday, December 10, 2000, at East Sparta Church of God with burial in Highland Cemetery. Bro. Jerry Barnwell and Bro. Ray Maynard officiated.

Claude R. Copeland
Claude R. Copeland, 66, of Oliver Springs, Tennessee passed away Thursday, October 19, 2000 at Methodist Medical Center at Oak Ridge.
Copeland was born in Sparta on September 30, 1934 to Phillip and Pearl Bradley Copeland. He had lived in Oliver Springs for the past 36 years.
He retired in July from the Columbia Beauty Supply Company where he had been employed for 35 years as a sales representative.
Copeland was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Bob Copeland, and his sister, Mary Kate Wilson.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Maggie Moore Copeland; one son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Lesa Copeland of Oliver Springs; two
grandchildren, Daniel Copeland and Lauren Copeland; his brother and sister-in-law, Leroy and Martha Copeland, and by his sister, Louise Milligan of Sparta.
Services were held Saturday, October 21, 2000 at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Garvan Walls and Rev. Keith Price officiating. Sharpe Funeral Home of Oliver Springs handled arrangements.

Mary M. Hayes, 76, of Sparta passed away Monday, December 11, 2000 at White County Hospital.
Hayes was born January 26, 1924 in White County.
She was a homemaker.
Hayes was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by four daughters, Carolyn F. Meadows, Betty T. Williams, Paulette Cannon, and Rosemary Williams, all of Sparta; two
brothers, Chester Writtenberry of Pennsylvania and Aaron Writtenberry of Ohio; six grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 13, 2000, at Hunter Funeral Home. Fate Wilson officiated. Burial was in Blue Springs

Veleda Roena Bennett, 88, of Cookeville passed away Monday, December 11,
2000 at Masters Health Care Center.
Bennett was born October 5, 1912, to Fain and Carrie Ray Netherton.
She was a member of Stevens Street Baptist Church for over 40 years.
Bennett was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband, Luther Bennett of Cookeville; her son and daughter-in-law of Sparta, Bill and Ella Morgan; her brother Doss
Netherton of Cookeville; three sisters, Velna Eldridge of Michigan, Vivian Riddle and Millie Huffer, both of Cookeville; one granddaughter, Kim White of Brentwood; two great grandchildren, Phillip Morgan White and Sydney White.
Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 13, 2000 at the Chapel of Dyer Funeral Home in Cookeville. Officiating was Brothers Lynn
Markham and Tim Franks. Burial was in Crest Lawn Cemetery.

James Carles Winnett
James Carles Winnett, 71, of Sparta, passed away Monday, December 11, 2000 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Winnett was born June 6, 1929 in White County to Charlie and Limmie Wilson Winnett.
He was a retired truck driver.
Winnett was preceded in death by his son, Jimmy Leon Winnett, and his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Louise Osborne Winnett of Sparta; three sons and daughters-in-law: Danny and Cindy Winnett of Sparta, Darrell and Sherrye Winnett of Cookeville, and Derrick and Jan Winnett of Cookeville; one daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Jackie Howell of Sparta, two grandchildren, James Leon Winnett, Jr. and Kyle Lee Winnett.
Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 14, at Hunter Funeral Home in Sparta. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery. Fate Wilson will

Justin Tyler Hutchings, a four day old infant, Of Sparta passed away Tuesday December 12th, 2000 at Vanderbilt Hospital.
The baby was born on Friday December 8th to Greg and Michelle Hutchings.
He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Karie and Megan; Grandparents, Royce and Lorene Hutchings of Sparta and H.B. and Adelene
Price of Jamestown; A Great Grandmother Pauline Hale of Sparta.
Graveside services will be conducted on Friday December 15th at 11am, at Taylor Providence Cemetery with Brother Davis Lee England officiating.

Charles Royce Parker, 67, of Sparta, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2001 at his residence.
Parker was born April 18, 1933 in Sparta, Tennessee to Marvin and Ellamae Jones Parker.
He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict.
Parker was a factory worker.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Parker is survived by his wife, Rita Bernice Hale Parker of Sparta; one daughter and son-in-law, Terresa Lynn Hooper and Michael Hooper of Sparta; one son, James Earl Parker of Sparta; one sister, Berdena Dodson of Sparta; five grancchildren, Nikia Hooper, Stephanie Parker, Stacy Parker, Greg Parker, Kyle Parker; his mother, Ellamae Parker of Sparta.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 1, 2001 at Hunter Funeral Home of Sparta. Burial will be at Peeled Chestnut Cemetery.

Lankford Lewis Raper
Lankford Lewis Raper, 89, of Doyle, Tennessee, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2001 at the residence of his daughter.
He was born in White County on October 29, 1922 to Will and Mamie Lyle Raper.
Raper was a member of Doyle Nazarene Church.
He served in the United States Navy and was a farmer.
Raper was preceded in death by his wife, Lydia Raper; his parents; two brothers, George Fate Raper and Charles Noah Raper; one sister Geneva
Hatcher.
He is survived by his son, Bennie Raper of Sparta, two daughters and sons-in-law, Levonda and James Hallums of Doyle, and Theresa and Tom Havener of Chattanooga; four brothers, J.L. Raper of Doyle, Lee Raper of Rocky Face, Georgia, Calvin Raper of Bon Air, and Fred Raper of Florida; four sisters, Bertha Sparkman and Mary Spakes, both of Doyle, Katherine Smith Cooley of Sparta, and Callie Bumbalough of Bon Air; eight grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
Raper will lie in state at Doyle Nazarene Church from 12:00 Noon - 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, just prior to funeral services.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 1, 2001, at Doyle Nazarene Church. Burial will be in Skurlock Cemetery. Brother William Welch will officiate.

Rosa Lee Roberson, 77, of Algood, Tennessee, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2001 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Roberson was born in Clay County, Tennessee on September 21, 1923 to Wade and Dona Dailey Goolsby.
She was a member of Cookeville Church of God.
Roberson was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by one son, Paul Roberson; her parents; one sister Lizzie Dee Carmack; three brothers, Earl, Fred, and Lawrence Goolsby.
She is survived by her husband, Curtis Roberson of Algood; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald David and Jan Roberson and Curtis Jr. and Janice Roberson, all of Cookeville; two daughters, Coletje Dean Roberson of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Patricia Lamb Hoffman of Columbia, S.C.; six brothers, Malcolm Goolsby of Gainesboro, Ed Mitchell Goolsby of Carthage, Leland and Benton Goolsby, both of Cookeville, Elmer Goolsby of Bloomington, Indiana, and Ralph Goolsby of Celina; one sister, Earlene Pennington of Celina.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 1, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Whitson Funeral Home in Cookeville, and from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Friday, March 2, at Cookeville Church of God.

Eva Pauline Hitchcock Watson
Eva Pauline Hitchcock Watson, 80, of Temperance, Michigan and formerly of Sparta, passed away Monday, February 26, 2001 in Toledo, Ohio.
Watson was born on April 25, 1920 to Samuel and Susan Nash Hitchcock in Sparta, Tennessee.
She was a homemaker.
Watson was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Thomas Watson; her son, Charles Thomas Watson, one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Nash, six brothers, Albert, Luther, James, Andrew, Frank and Sterling Hitchcock; three sisters, Velma, Verlie and twin sister Irene.
She is survived by three daughters, Alma Eisenmann of Missouri, Shirley McFarland of Nashville, and Virginia Sandberg of California; one son, Sam Watson; three brothers, Rev. Cleve Hitchcock of Sparta, Eugene and Howard Hitchcock, both of Cookeville; three sisters, Nola Ramsey of Sparta, and May Jager and Virgie Clyde, both of Cookeville; 16 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren.
Family will receive friends from 1:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Friday, March 2, at Whitson Funeral Home.

Alice Irene Strickland Meadows, 80, of Sparta, passed away Saturday, February 24, 2001, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Meadows was born September 1, 1920, in West Virginia, to Georgia and Addie Williams Strickland.
She was a homemaker.
Meadows was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Lee Meadows.
Survivors include three daughters, Ann Phillips of Sparta, Helen Hastings of Spencer, and Judy Bumbalough of Sparta; three sons, George W.
(Bud) Meadows, Tim Meadows, and Tom Meadows all of Sparta; one sister, Jean Pack of Boyd, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday, February 27, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Hunter Funeral Home with burial in New Bon Air Cemetery. Glen Hargroves and Kenneth Peters officiated.

John David Eller, 31, of White County, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at White County Hospital Community Hospital.
Eller was born February 27, 1970, in Sparta, Tennessee, to Thomas and Mary Usrey Eller.
He was employed at Sparta Electric and Water Department.

Julie Ann Carr (Judy) Young, 48, of Sparta, passed away Sunday, April 1, 2001, at White County Community Hospital.
Young was born July 31, 1952, in Sparta, to William Ed and Betty Jean Rice Carr.
She was a housewife.
Young was preceded in death by her father and two brothers, Gene Carr and Robert Glen (Bobby) Carr.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry W. Young of Sparta; one daughter and son-in-law, Matt and Sherry Young of Sparta; mother, Betty Jean Carr of Sparta; two sisters, Mary Austin of Crossville and Teresa Hargis of Sparta; two brothers, Sam Carr and Doug Carr both of Sparta; mother-in-law, Daisy Young of Sparta; and four grandchildren, Bruce Young, Brandon Young, Jonissa Stewart, and Amber Stewart.

Frances Ramona Wilhite Gillam
Frances Ramona Wilhite Gillam, 71, of St. Clair Shores, Michigan, went to be with our Lord on Saturday, June 23, 2001.
Gillam was born March 5, 1930, in Sparta.
She was preceded in death by her husband, H. B. Gillam; her parents, Simeon and Lela Wilhite; and three brothers, J. D. Wilhite, Porter Wilhite, and Oscar Harles Wilhite.
She was an active member of the Church of Christ. Gillam was an avid gardener and was a babysitter for numerous children through the years. She was lovingly known as “Nana” to the children.
Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Gary W. Gillam and Steven D. and Debi Gillam all of St. Clair Shores, Michigan; one daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and William Pilkey of Memphis, Michigan; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and one brother, Enoch C. Wilhite of Sparta.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at 5 p.m. at Roseville Church of Christ in Roseville, Michigan.

Nina Marie Griffin
Nina Marie Griffin, 81, of Cookeville, passed away Monday, June 25, 2001.
Griffin was born December 2, 1919, in Sparta, to David Odus and Pearl Hayes Brady.
She was a member of Cookeville First United Methodist Church and was a member of PEO. She was a graduate of Chillicothe Business Business School and worked with General Motors, Ward-Belmont College, and Kings Daughters Hospital.
Griffin was preceded in death by one son, John Patrick Griffin and one brother, David Manson Brady.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Harry Griffin; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sarah Griffin Williams and Lewis Williams of Panasoffkee, Florida; Jane Ann Berlin of Dublin, Ohio; and Suzanne and Daniel Supthen of Dublin, Ohio; one brother, James P. Brady of Cookeville; and five grandchildren, John Griffin Ridings, Michael Rhett Ridings, Harrison Bryan Sutphen, Hilary Jane Sutphen, and Hayley Jourdan Sutphen.
Services will be held Thursday, June 28, 2001, at 1 p.m. at Cookeville Chapel of Hooper & Huddleston Funeral Home with burial in Crest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. Rev. John Michael Jones and Bro. Charlie Hutchinson officiated.

Archie Ronald Monfort, 61, of Sparta, passed away Saturday, June 23, 2001, at White County Community Hospital.
Monfort was born October 5, 1939, in Columbus, Georgia, to Archie and Mildred Fullerton Monfort.
He was an electrical engineer.
Monfort was preceded in death by one son, Jeffrey Monfort and one brother, Douglas Monfort.
Survivors include his wife, Rose Monfort of Sparta; one son, Danny Monfort of Graceville, Florida; one daughter, Kimberley Hayes of LaVergne; one brother, Winston Monfort of Alpharetta, Georgia; one sister, Cheryl Brown of Phoenix City, Alabama; parents, Archie and Mildred Monfort of Columbus, Georgia; and four grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at 2 p.m. at First Apostolic Church in Sparta with burial in Highland Cemetery. Rev. David Walters and Ron Phillips officiated.

Richard William Lykens
Richard William Lykens, 75, of Sevierville, passed away Saturday, June 23, 2001.
Lykens attended First Baptist Church of Sevierville and was a graduate of U. T. School of Law. He served in the United States Marines with the rank of corporal on the USS Hornet. Lykens was a well known attorney in Sparta and Sevierville and served as Circuit Court Judge. He was Housing Authority Director, member of the Lions Club, American Legion, Sparta Civitan Club, and was a Shriner and Mason.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Adele Baddour Lykens and his parents, Hoyt and Bette Lykens.
Survivors include one son, Jeffrey Lykens; two sisters, Rosemary Burr and Shelby Foster; and two brothers, Robert Lykens and John Lykens.
Services were held Monday, June 25, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Lebanon on Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at 1 p.m. Rev. Jerry Hyder officiated.

Ella Nash, 94, of Baxter, passed away Saturday, June 23, 2001.
Nash was born October 22, 1906, in DeKalb County, to Asher and Charlotte Spears Dunn.
She attended the Church of God and was a homemaker.
Nash was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lilburn Nash; and one son Malcolm Nash.
Survivors include two sons, Donald Nash of Sparta and S. T. Nash of Baxter; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lila and Carl Johnson of Baxter and Mary and Carl Donaldson of Cookeville; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
Services were held Monday, June 25, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Whitson Funeral Home with burial in Nash Cemetery. Bro. Sterl Paramore officiated.

Mildred Johnson Trump
Mildred Johnson Trump, 84, of Bethesda, Maryland, passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2001.
Trump was preceded in death by her parents. Oscar and Sally Cole Johnson.
Survivors include her husband, Earl Trump, Sr. of Bethesda, Maryland; one son Earl Trump, Jr. of Frederick, Maryland; five sisters, Geneva Thompson Floyd of Sparta, Vivian Boswell and Marcella Bilbrey both of Cookeville, Patricia Greene of Nashville, and Ivah Hayes of Baxter; three brothers, Carl Johnson of Baxter, Oren Johnson of California, and William Johnson of Brentwood; and one grandson, Brian Wesley Trump.
Trump chose cremation and a memorial service was held in Maryland on Thursday, June 21, 2001. Graveside services will be held Saturday, June 30, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Johnson’s Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery in DeKalb County. Sterl Paramore will officiate.

Gerard “Jerry” G. Van Eick
Gerard “Jerry” G. Van Eick, 71, of Sparta, passed away Sunday, June 24, 2001.
Van Eick was born May 16, 1930, in New York, New York, to Alfred Dratschmitt and Natalie Johanna Wittig
He joined the United States Navy in 1948 and served aboard the aircraft carrier, Valley Forge with ports-of-call in Hawaii, Japan, and China. Van Eick had worked at many endeavors during his lifetime including work as a house painter, with Reed Haughton Motors, and he helped his parents with their fishing vessel at Port Canaveral. After his marriage in April, 1957, to Dot, he worked for Ellis Air Lines. He was later a supervisor at Harris Corporation and retired in 1968 when he moved to Sparta. Van Eick was very active in his church, Assembly of God. He taught Sunday School and was the official church photographer. He served faithfully until the Lord called him home.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy “Dot” Van Eick of Sparta; three sons, Gerard Van Eick of Sparta and Walter Van Eick and Roy Allen Van Eick both of Melborne, Florida; and three grandchildren, Rebecca Van Eick, Arika Van Eick, and Ashley Van Eick all of Melborne, Florida.
Services were held Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Nashville with burial at the same location. Bro. John Adams, Bro. Edward D. Thompson, and Bro. Brent Tevebaugh officiated.
