George W. Bivens of Madisonville, passed away at 6:50 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 6, at Sweetwater Hospital. He was of the Baptist faith. 
He was 80.
Survivors include: wife of 53 years, Novell Williams Bivens; Daughters and sons-in-law-Sandra C. Raper of Madisonville; Charlotte (Cookie) and Harry W. Dawson II of Chattanooga; Granddaughter- Dava Lintz of Chattanooga; Grandson and spouse-Jeffery and Sandra R. Raper of Madisonville; Great-granddaughter-Haley Nichole Raper; Sisters-Reba Dalton and Faye Bright of Madisonville; Brothers-Gus and Guy Bivens, both of Loudon; Willis Bivens of Maryville; Several nieces and nephews. Troie Jane Millsaps
Died: 11/06/1999
Troie Jane Millsaps of Vonore, passed away at 6:10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 6, at Wood Presbyterian Home. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and the W.M.U.
She was 89.
Preceded in death by: husband, Jessie M. Millsaps; parents, Robert and Roxie Hensley Glass; brothers, Tom, Dave, Henry and Albert Glass. 
Survivors include: daughters and sons-in-law-Ruth and J.L. Watson of Sweetwater; Mildred and Austin McKee of Madisonville; Sons and daughters-in-law J.T. and Betty Millsaps of Vonore; Bill and Anna Millsaps of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; Seven grandchildren; Five great-grandchildren; Several nieces and nephews. 
Funeral services were 8 p.m., Monday in Biereley-Hale Chapel with the Revs. Tommy Self and Clinton Riddle officiating. Interment was 11 a.m., Tuesday, in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Biereley-Hale Funeral, Madisonville, in charge of arrangements.

Merritt Neal Ayers
Died: 11/05/1999
Merritt Neal (Buster) Ayers of Philadelphia, passed away Nov. 5, after a long illness. He was born June 14, 1914 in Smokemont, Swain County, N.C. He resided in this area until 1934, when it became a national park and helped to construct the first road out to Clingman’s Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains. He served his country 5 1/2 years in the U.S. Army. He was 85. Survived by: daughter-Mary Jane Samarian; Grandchildren-Robert and Jennifer Samarian of Warren, Mich.; Stepdaughter and son-in-law-Sara and Douglas Galyon of Philadelphia; Sisters-Bonnie Wilson of Athens, Texas; and Loretta Hughes of Athens, Tenn.; Several nieces and nephews. The family received friends from 7-9 p.m., Saturday at Kyker Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, at Cedar Valley Baptist Church, Sweetwater, where he was a member. Revs. Virgil Turbyfill and Clinton Riddle will conduct the service. Interment will follow in Murray’s Baptist Church Cemetery. Lois Lucille Loomis
Died: 11/03/1999
Lois Lucille Wood Loomis of Sweetwater, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Fort Sanders Regional Hospital. She was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church in Sweetwater. 
She was 80. Preceded in death by: husband, Edward Percy Loomis. Survivors include: daughters-Jane Andersen of Kingsport; Peggy Smyth of Sweetwater; Son-Ed Loomis of Macon, Ga.; Grandchildren-Julie Johnson of Roswell, Ga.; Walton Johnson of Knoxville; and Will Andersen of Kingsport; Sister-Orinda Kennedy of Sweetwater; Several nieces and nephews. The body is at Kyker Funeral Home, Sweetwater, where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., tonight, (Friday). Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, in Kyker’s Chapel with the Rev. James Calderazzo officiating. Interment will follow in West View Cemetery.

Mayme Williamson Stephens
Died: 11/01/1999
Mayme Williamson Stephens, a resident of Sweetwater Valley Convalescent Home, passed away at 10:20 a.m., Monday, Nov. 1, at Sweetwater Valley Convalescent Home. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was 96.
Preceded in death by: daughter, Billie Sharpe; great-granddaughter, Courtney Malissa Dunn Shelley.
Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law-Jean and Tom Dunn of San Clemente, Calif.; Granddaughters and spouses-Wilma and Larry Stein of Sweetwater; Kerry Dunn and John Shelley of Albany, Calif.; Leslie Davenport of San Rafael, Calif.; and Nancy and Jay Keller of Davis, Calif.; Five great-grandchildren; Several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., today (Wednesday) in Biereley-Hale Chapel with the Revs. Beecher Miller and Gale Miller officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Biereley-Hale Funeral Home, Madisonville, in charge of arrangements.

Linda Gale Booten of Georgetown, formerly of Tellico Plains, passed away suddenly Sunday, Oct. 31, at Bradley Memorial Hospital. She was 50. 
Preceded in death by: mother, Carolyn Lively Henry.

Wanda L. Wigley of Madisonville, passed away at 4:10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 29, at Wood’s Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Blessed Hope Baptist Church.
She was 66.
Preceded in death by: husband, Emmett Gene Wigley; first husband, Herbert Fred Jenkins; parents, Wesley and Dollie Holcomb.

William Charles Roberts 
Died: 10/29/1999
William Charles Roberts Sr. of Englewood, passed away at 8:10 p.m., Friday, Oct. 29, at the home of his daughter. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. He was of the Church of God faith. 
He was 78. Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law-Betty and Darris Price of Lenoir City; Sons and daughter-in-law-Doug and Diane Roberts of Lenoir City; Jerry and Dennis Roberts of Madisonville; and Charles Roberts of Maryville; 11 grandchildren; Three great-grandchildren; Sister-Faye White of Madisonville; Brothers-H.B., Joe and Ralph Roberts, all of Greenville, S.C.; Funeral services were at 6 p.m., Sunday, in Biereley-Hale Chapel with the Rev. David Watson officiating. Interment was 11 a.m. Monday, in Haven Hill Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Sweetwater VFW Post #5156.. Lucy Gamble Lankford
Died: 10/26/1999
Lucy Gamble Lankford of Madisonville, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, in Roane Medical Center in Harriman. She was of the Methodist faith. 
She was 95.
Preceded in death by: parents, Joe and Sally Gamble; four brothers; four sisters; son-in-law, Randal Stiles.
Survivors include: daughter-Ruby Stiles of Kingston; Sons and daughters-in-law-Edward and Lorene Lankford of Madisonville; Kenneth and Laverne Gamble of Vonore; 10 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were 8 p.m., Thursday, in Kyker’s Chapel. Interment will be at 1 p.m., today, (Friday), in Chestua Methodist Cemetery. Kyker Funeral Home, Madisonville, in charge of arrangements.

Hoyt D. Jones
Died: 10/25/1999
Hoyt D. Jones of Manchester, Ga., formerly of Monroe County, passed away Monday, Oct. 25, at Georgia Baptist-Meriwether Hospital in Manchester. He was a retired truck driver with Roadway Express Trucking Company.
He was 75.
Preceded in death by: wife, Willie Bernice Borden Jones.
Survivors include: daughter, Deborah Allen of Atlanta; Sons-Tony Jones of Cleve-land; Terry Jones of Haralson, Ga.; and Chris Jones of Manchester; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; Sisters-Margie Mullins of Madisonville; Audrey Brown of Sweetwater. 
Funeral services were at 8 p.m. Thursday in Biereley-Hale Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Maxwell officiating. Interment will be at 11 a.m., today (Friday) in Friendship Cemetery. Biereley-Hale Funeral Home, Madison-ville, in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Peggy Merrifield
Died: 10/25/1999
Margaret "Peggy" Merrifield passed away Monday, Oct. 25, in Lancashire, England. She was 87.
Preceded in death by: husband, Fred Merrifield. Daughters-Elizabeth Hannan of Tellico Plains and Hazel Cressey of Yorkshire, England; 
Two sons-in-law; Three grandchildren; Six great-grandchildren; Many nieces and nephews.

Joyce Wanda Posten French
Died: 10/21/1999
Joyce Wanda Posten French of Sweetwater, passed away Oct. 21, at UT Hospital after an extended illness. She was a native of Wilton Junction, Iowa and had resided in East Tennessee for 21 years and in Sweetwater for 13 years. She was employed as cashier at Ingle’s in Sweetwater. She was of the Church of Christ faith.
She was 61.
Survived by: husband of 41 years, Jerry J. French of Sweetwater; Son and daughter-in-law-Jerry Dean and Dollie M. French of Sweetwater; Daughter and son-in-law-Terri Lynn and Lee Elam of Madisonville; Grandchildren-Lee Michael and Michelle Elam of Madisonville; 
Final arrangements were made by East Tennessee Mortuary Services of Knoxville.

Roma Louella Wade 
Died: 10/19/1999
Roma Louella Wade of 217 Watson’s Chapel Road, Madisonville, died Oct. 19, in Sweetwater Convalescent Home. She was 84. Preceded in death by: parents, James and Vesta Wade; four brothers and five sisters. Survivors include: sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Edward Hurley; Several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., today (Friday), at Watson’s Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Gibby officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Frank M. Steele of Maryville, passed away Monday, Oct. 18, at the family home. He was a member of Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church; was retired from Alcoa and was a member of the 25-year club. He was 88. Preceded in death by: wife, Icy Verdell Steele; son, J.C. Steele; grandson, Richard M. Cable; brothers, Labe, Verble, John and Elmer Steele; sisters, Elizabeth Best and Esther Garren; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ulyss and Delcia Yates. He was a member of Ironsburg Methodist Church. He was 84. Preceded in death by: grandson, Roger Kelley Crowder; parents, William and Fannie Kelley; sisters, Jennie, Rosa and Laura; brothers, Robert, John, Jim and Pearl. Survivors include: wife of 64 years-Myrl Ball Kelley; Daughters and sons-in-law-June and Jim Crowder of Apison; Sandy and Leonard Frerichs; Granddaughters and spouse-Allison Mizell and Amy and Arlie Wear, all of the Epperson Community; Grandson-Greg Crowder of Apison; Great-grandsons and spouse-Jamie and Joy Crowder and Kevin Crowder; Great-great-granddaughters-Ashley, Brittany and Brandy Crowder, all of Apison; Several nieces and nephews. June Heiskell Johnson (Feb. 29, 2000) June Heiskell Johnson of Sweetwater, passed away Feb. 29, at Life Care in Athens. She was a member of Sweetwater First Presbyterian Church and was a retired teacher from Sweetwater City Schools. She was 76. Preceded in death by: parents, Henry A. and Nell Thomas Williams; husbands, William L. (Bill) Heiskell and Hollis Johnson. Survivors include: daughter-Nancy Heiskell of Orange Park, Fla.; Sisters-Rachel Couch of West Columbia, Texas and Patricia Trew of Ocoee; Three nephews and two nieces. The body is at Kyker Funeral Home, Sweetwater, where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, March 1. Family and friends will meet at 10:45 a.m., Thursday at West View Cemetery for an 11 a.m. graveside service and interment with the Rev. Chris Noto officiating.

Allene Brown Craddock Lumsden

Allene Brown Craddock Lumsden (Feb. 27, 2000) Allene Brown Craddock Lumsden, formerly of Sweetwater, Macon and Toccoa, Ga., died Sunday, Feb. 27, at the residence of her son near Jackson, Ga. She was born June 10, 1930 in Stephens County, Georgia. She was married to Hoyt V. Brown, who died in 1969 and later married Darrell E. Craddock, who died in 1992. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Toccoa and had attended the First Presbyterian Church in Sweetwater. Mrs. Lumsden was a supervisor with DFACS in Macon for 10 years and later retired from their office in Toccoa. She was 69. Survivors include: husband, Walter B. Lumsden of Sweetwater; Children-Cliff and Jenny Brown of Jackson, Ga.; Laura and Boyd Busby of Albany, Ga.; Lisa and Robert Hatcher of Macon, Ga.; Donna and Rogers McConnell of Snellville, Ga.; Grandchildren-Gincy and Joseph Brown, Brian and Bethany Busby and Steven Hatcher; Aunts-Lucile Kester, Salisbury, N.C.; and Georgia Mabe of Mooresville, N.C. Eldridge E. Laurence (Feb. 27, 2000) Eldridge E. Laurence, a resident of Wood Village, Sweetwater, formerly of Palatka, Fla., and Washington, Penn., passed away at Sweetwater Hospital on Feb. 27. He had served as a church elder in the Church of Christ in Washington, Penn.; and Patlatka, Fla., for more than 50 years. Retired from Starvaggie Inc. in Weirton, W.V., he was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was 88. Preceded in death by: daughter, Fay Annette Bunner; infant son, Kenneth Laurence; brother, Ethan Laurence; sister, Lillian Young, Zora Baugh, Matalou Price, Jessie Shilling; son-in-law, Bayard Spragg. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Sweetwater and a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was 75. Survivors include: wife of 31 years, Betty C. Clarence Millsaps (Feb. 24, 2000) Clarence Millsaps of 243 Pressley Rd., Vonore died suddenly at his residence Thursday, Feb. 24. He was a member of Island Creek Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was 74. Preceded in death by: parents, Grover and Dinah Stratton Millsaps.
