She grew up in Memphis, where she was graduated from Miss Hutchison's school and graduated from Randolph Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, VA, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She received a M.A. degree from The University of Alabama, and attended Parson's School of Design in New York City. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Andrew H. Miller; a son, Dr. Robert H. Miller III, wife Nancy of Memphis; a daughter, Coleman Legerton, husband, Chip of Charleston, SC; 5 grandchildren, Meredith, Katharine and Andrew Miller II, Margaret and Hunter Legerton. She also had a sister, Kitty Gray Pharr Long of Uniontown, AL; and a brother, the late Samuel S. Pharr of Austin, TX. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, the Centennial Club, The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, the Campbell chapter of the National Society of The Daughters of the American Revolution, the Nashville Academy of Medicine Alliance, the James K. Polk Memorial Association, the Ladies Hermitage Association, and the Windemere Garden Club. Visitation will be in the Parlor of Westminster Church, on Saturday, October 5, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., before a Memorial service at 11 a.m., the Reverend Robert P. Richardson presiding. A pioneer in the Employee Assistance Program field, was born October 12, 1920. She passed Sunday, September 29, 2002. Mrs. Shoemake began the Employee Assistance Program for Metropolitan Government in 1978. In 1991, Mrs. Shoemake was instrumental in getting legislative bill #741 on confidential record enacted into law. In 1995, she was certified and awarded the lifetime achievement award by the Association of Employee Assistance Program. In 1996, Mrs. Shoemake was among those selected to the Strathmore's Whose Who Registry of business leaders. In 1996, she was a recipient of the Alcohol and Drug Counsel Outstanding Community Services Award. She leaves to mourn her passing, 1 daughter, Ms. Barbara Brown; 3 sons, Boyd, Kevin and Robert Brown; father of her children, Ralph M. Brown; grandchildren, Andrea, Craig, Shelly and Martha Brown; step son, Michael Shoemake; step grandchildren, Hastings and Reid Beard and Damon Shoemake; additionally all members of Alcoholics Anonymous, whom she loved very much. She is survived by her son, Jerry Sullivan and his wife, Gayle of Gallatin, TN; daughter-in-law, Helen Sullivan of Nolensville, TN; seven grandsons; fifteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Her remains rest at Phillips-Robinson Funeral Home, 2707 Gallatin Road, where the family will receive friends today, 1 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at the funeral home at 11:30 in the morning, Friday, October 4, 2002.
