BANKER, KATHERINE THOMAS (KATY) - passed away peacefully at her home in Kingston on Saturday, December 27th, on the eve of the 57th anniversary of her marriage to the late L. Eugene (Gene) Banker. A native of Bristol, Tenn., Mrs. Banker resided in Kingston since 1950. She was an elder and active member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Kingston and in 1988 served as moderator of the Presbytery of East Tennessee. For more than 35 years, she taught English and Latin at Roane County High School; she was a founding member of the Roane County Heritage Commission and played a leading role in the preservation of the historic Roane County Courthouse. She was preceded in death by her parents, G. Tollie and Nelle B. Thomas; and her husband. Survivors include six sons, Luke H. Banker of Knoxville, Thomas E. Banker of Silver Point, Tenn., John G. Banker of Boulder, Colo., Timothy D. Banker of Centreville, Va., Mark T. Banker of Kingston, Joseph M. Banker of Collierville, Tenn.; 19 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services to offer thanks and celebration for Mrs. Banker's life will be held at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Kingston at 3 p.m. on Monday, December 29. Friends will gather in the Educational Building after the services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Memorial Fund of Bethel Presbyterian Church or the Old Courthouse Preservation Project of the Roane County Heritage Commission. 

BASLER, WILLIAM ''BILL'' - age 90, of Knoxville, formerly of Wartburg, died Saturday evening, December 27, 1997, at Shannondale Health Care Center, Knoxville, Tenn. Mr. Basler is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Gail Basler of Knoxville; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Grady Lassiter of Harriman; six grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Monday December 29, 1997, from 6-8 p.m. Schubert Funeral Home, Wartburg. Funeral service will be held Monday evening, 8 p.m. Schubert Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. BEETS, OVEDA - age 79, of North Knoxville, passed away Sunday, December 28, 1997, at Baptist Hospital. Member of Second United Methodist Church. BOLTON, DR. LEON L. - retired orthodontist died December 26, 1997, in Memphis. Graduate of U.T. Knoxville and U.T. Dental School Memphis. Survived by his wife, Freddie Lou Easterly Bolton, formerly of Knoxville and son, Dr. L. Former member of the Kingston Lions Club, member of Central Baptist Church. Preceded in death by his parents. LEMMON, HELEN FAYE (nee Phillips) - of Racine, Wis., passed away Thursday, December 25, at home. She died from a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Tennessee on May 23, 1937, to Burley and Lina Phillips. She loved to do things for her children, cook, sew, plant flowers, grow gardens, crochet and read. PITTARD, WILLIAM H., JR. - 76, died December 26, 1997, at Shannondale Health Care Center. Mr. Pittard was a deacon at South Knoxville Baptist Church. He was a decorated U.S. Army Veteran of W.W.II. He was awarded the Bronze Star. He was also a former employee of Boiler Supply Co. for 41 years. Surviving are his wife, Eunice Cooper Pittard; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Jerry Collier of Atlanta, Ga. and their son, Jason of Lexington, Ky.; daughter, Judy Zoerb of Niceville, Fla. and her children, Missy Brennan of Anchorage, Alaska and Danny Zoerb of Pembroke, Mass.; daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Keith Raines and their children, Jessie and Josh of Mansfield, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Kenneth Stone and their children, Jake and Andy of San Diego, Calif.; and also three great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruby Boyd of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Ann Meadows of Bowling Green, Ky.; brothers, Sam Pittard of Murfreesboro, Ky., Robert Pittard of Nashville, Tenn., Bob Pittard of Omaha, Neb. REED, HUGH J.F. - age 79, of Sweetwater, passed away at the family home on Sunday morning, December 28, 1997, after a lengthy illness. He was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Sweetwater, where he taught Sunday school for several years. Mr. Reed was a member of the Gideons International. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of W.W.II. Mr. Reed was a former partner of McKinneys Dept. Store of Sweetwater for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Clara Smith Reed; sister, Imogene Reed Clark. Survivors: wife of 57 years, Catherine Alexander Reed of Sweetwater; sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Betty Reed of Crossville, Wayne and Karon Reed of Greensboro, N.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Gary Street of Johnson City; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruby Mincey and Eula Coleman, both of Sweetwater; brothers, Willie Reed and Jack Reed, both of Sweetwater, Sammie A. STIVERS, ROBERT MILTON, SR. - age 79, of Maryville, formerly of Memphis, died at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, December 27, 1997, in Maryville. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church and the Spark Plug Sunday School class. He was a life member of Memphis Engineers Club and the White Station Lions Club in Memphis. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1942 and was a retired electrical engineer. Preceded in death by his parents, Winthrop and Eva Stivers; brothers, Tom and Winthrop Stivers. Survivors: wife of 55 years, Virginia Thurston Stivers; son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Beth Stivers of Knoxville; daugther and son-in-law, Nancy and Lloyd Rowland of Clifton, Va.; granddaughter, Ali Stivers; three grandsons, Lloyd Rowland, Rob Stivers, and Ben Rowland; sister-in-law, Merva Stivers of Houston, Texas; niece, Ann Stivers of Houston, Texas. Family and friends will meet at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday morning at Bethel Cemetery in Townsend for the interment service. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday at Miller Funeral Home, Maryville. 

WILLIAMS, LUTHER, JR. - age 67, of Mascot, passed away Saturday, December 27, 1997, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. Member of Clear Springs Baptist Church. Preceded in death by parents, Luther and Grace Williams, Sr. Survived by wife, June Williams; four sons, Raymond, Jackie, Jerry and Ricky Williams, all of Mascot; one daughter, Sue Petree of Blaine; three sisters, Mary Roach of Maynardville, Georgia Allen of Mascot, Flora Bellamy of Richmond, Va.; seven grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the McCarty Chapel with Rev. David Salley officiating followed by the interment at Clear Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at McCarty Mortuary, 4004 Holston Drive. 

ZEHNER, CARL D. - age 65, of 673 Montview Road, Lenoir City, passed away Sunday afternoon, December 28, 1997, at Park West Hospital. Carl was retired from Lockheed Martin Energy Systems, Inc. K-25 after 37 years of service. He was an avid horseman. Survivors: wife of 46 years, Eloise L. Zehner; daughters, Beth Justice, Dana Zehner, and Martha Hood, all of Lenoir City; son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth G. Vest, Jr. and Brandi of Biloxi, Miss.; granddaughters, Crystal Smith and Brandi Hood; brothers and sisters-in-law, Al and Pat Zehner of Atlanta, Ga., Charles and Betty Catlett of Sevierville; sister and brother-in-law, Jerri and Paul Kirby of Knoxville; nieces, Debbie, Lori, Becky, Karen; nephews, Jeff and Ronnie. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday followed by funeral service at 8 p.m. in the Click Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Jon Henson officiating.
