BANKER, KATHERINE THOMAS (KATY) - passed away peacefully at her home in Kingston on Saturday, December 27th, on the eve of the 57th anniversary of her marriage to the late L. Eugene (Gene) Banker. A native of Bristol, Tenn., Mrs. Banker resided in Kingston since 1950. She was an elder and active member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Kingston and in 1988 served as moderator of the Presbytery of East Tennessee. For more than 35 years, she taught English and Latin at Roane County High School; she was a founding member of the Roane County Heritage Commission and played a leading role in the preservation of the historic Roane County Courthouse. She was preceded in death by her parents, G. Tollie and Nelle B. Thomas; and her husband. Survivors include six sons, Luke H. Banker of Knoxville, Thomas E. Banker of Silver Point, Tenn., John G. Banker of Boulder, Colo., Timothy D. Banker of Centreville, Va., Mark T. Banker of Kingston, Joseph M. Banker of Collierville, Tenn.; 19 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services to offer thanks and celebration for Mrs. Banker's life will be held at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Kingston at 3 p.m. on Monday, December 29. Friends will gather in the Educational Building after the services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Memorial Fund of Bethel Presbyterian Church or the Old Courthouse Preservation Project of the Roane County Heritage Commission. 

BIOLA, LEO - age 85, of Nashville, formerly of Maryville, died Monday, December 1, 1997, in Nashville. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, December 29, 1997, at Grandview Cemetery Chapel, Maryville. 

BIRKHOLZ, ROBERT M. - age 51, of Farragut, formerly of Loudon, passed away suddenly Friday, December 26, 1997, at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. Robert was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and chairman of the board for Lutheran Family Services. Senior vice president of Robert C. Fraim Associates. Graduate of Loudon High School Class of 1964, the University of Tennessee and Washington University. He was very active in Boy Scouts Troop 125 at St. John Neumann in Farragut and was a member of Acacia Fraternity. Preceded in death by father, Ray T. Birkholz. Survived by wife of 28 years, Shari Robinson Birkholz; children, Robert R. Birkholz and Elizabeth Birkholz, both of Farragut; mother, Edna Birkholz of Loudon; brothers and sisters-in-law, William R. and Sheila Birkholz of Loudon, Jim and Pam Birkholz of Huntsville, Ala., Dave Birkholz of Loudon; sister, Beverly Butler of Macon, Ga.; several nieces and nephews; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Kathryn Robinson of Loudon; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Larry and Roberta Robinson of Maryville, Steve and Elaine Robinson of Signal Mtn. BOLES, MR. WALTER P. - age 82, of Maynardville, passed away 5:05 a.m. Saturday, December 27, 1997, at Wariota Healthcare Center after a long illness. He was of the Baptist faith and was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. BOLTON, DR. LEON L. - retired orthodontist died December 26, 1997, in Memphis. Graduate of U.T. Knoxville and U.T. Dental School Memphis. Survived by his wife, Freddie Lou Easterly Bolton, formerly of Knoxville and son, Dr. L. CRUZE, GIFFORD G. - age 88, of Maryville, died Thursday, December 25, 1997, at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was a member of New Providence Presbyterian Church, was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and was a retired comptroller with TVA since April, 1971. He was the son of the late A.E. and Myrtle Oglesby Cruze and was also preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Belle McNutt Cruze. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn C. and Hildon Stewart of Houston, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Alvin M. and Karen Cruze of Cary, N.C.; grandchildren, Sidney Cruze of Raleigh, N.C., Warren Cruze of Las Cruces, N.M., Robert and Kim Long of Houston, Texas, Chris Long of Chicago, Ill.; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Elizabeth and Don Taggart of Winter Haven, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; beloved caregiver, Loretta Brewer. EDWARDS, IRIS STEWART (MRS. E.) - age 85, of North Knoxville, died Thursday, December 25, 1997. She was a member of Buffat Heights Baptist Church for over 50 years, where she taught Sunday School and worked with youth for many years as well as serving as church clerk for 50 years. Mrs. Edwards was the widow of Lawrence Edwards to whom she was married for 63 years. She is survived by her children, Alvin and Margaret Edwards of Greenville, S.C., Wayne and Evelyn Taylor of Knoxville; grandchildren, Scot, Missy and Mark Taylor, Kellie and Russell Edwards; great-grandchildren, Emily, Joshua and Jacob Taylor; special friend and sister-in-law, Anna E. Scarbrough of Maryville, Tenn. FRENCH, DOROTHA ELIZABETH HENRY - was born into one of Blount County's old pioneer families on Saint Patrick's Day, 1927. She died on Christmas night, 1997. She was a member of Bakers Creek Presybterian Church. Her paintings and whimsical pottery paid tribute to her heightened appreciation of the beauty in everyday things. She struggled with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease for several years. She faced the worst this world has to offer with a grand spirit that was supported by fellow artists and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, George D. and Buena Hunt Henry. Survivors include husband, Rue M. French; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Peggy French of Greenback; son, Jame H. French of Kingston; daughter, Penny French of Knoxville; grandchildren, Will and Josh French of Greenback. GENTRY, MARY VICTORIA CUTSHAW - age 68, of Powell, Tenn., was called home to heaven on Christmas Day 1997. She was a member of Bells Campground Baptist Church in Powell, Tenn. Preceded in death by son, Dennis E. Maughan; father, Alfred Cutshaw; mother, Addie Bea Trotter Cutshaw; and stepmother, Nannie Jane Cutshaw. Survived by her loving husband, James Gentry; sons, Steven Maughan of Oak Ridge and Noah Smith of Knoxville; daughter, Cynthia Hillard and Vickie Cooper of Knoxville and Phyllis Maughan of Powell; grandchildren, Christina Beeler of Oak Ridge, Eric Hurst, Steven Cooper, and Jordan Smith of Knoxville; great-grandchildren, Erica Hurst and Michael R. Hurst of Knoxville and Tyler Beeler of Oak Ridge; stepchildren, Linda Barnard and Michael Gentry of Powell and Dennis Gentry of New Market. GEORGE, CHANDRAVILA ISSAC - age 72, of Knoxville, Tenn., died on December 25, 1997. Pastor George was born in Kerala, India, where he grew up and completed his elementary and secondary studies. He graduated from Spicer Memorial College in 1957 with a bachelor in religious education and soon after entered the ministerial service for the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Pastor George was ordained as a minister on March 8, 1969, under the provisions of the Seventh-Day Church to perform all the functions of the ministerial office. In 1973, Pastor George immigrated to the United States, under a sponsorship given by the Lake Union Conference of the Seventh-Day Adventist to work as a literature evangelist in the Chicago region. He continued to work and serve the church in many different capacities until his retired in 1990. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Saramma George; son, Clifford George of Silver Springs, Md.; daughters, Susan Kline of Knoxville, Tenn. and Shirley Alonso of Berrien Springs, Mich.; six grandchildren, Alina, Marissa, Andrew, Matthew, Elliot and Kristin. GILES, EDITH MARIE GODFREY - age 86, of Knoxville, went to be with the Lord at 10:55 p.m. Friday, December 26, 1997, at St. Mary's Medical Center. She was retired from Standard Knitting Mills. Preceded in death by husband, Howard Giles; mother, Mattie Godfrey; father, C.N. Godfrey, Sr.; brothers, C.N. Godfrey, Jr. and Bruce Godfrey. HEATHERLY, MABLE SARAH - departed this earth on December 16, 1997, at Baptist Hospital after a short illness. She was born to Alec and Susan Gray Heatherly on October 3, 1912, in Campbell County. HICKS, VADA FRANCES - of Knoxville, passed away Friday, December 26, 1997, at home. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and was preceded in death by husband, Rev. George N. Hicks. Survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Annita and Edward Hall of Knoxville and Sandra and Rick Sparks of Siloam Springs, Ark.; sister, Arbadella Winstead of Morgantown, N.C.; sisters-in-law, Louise Woodall of Rockford and Viola Woodall of Maryville; several nieces and nephews. A member of Dixie Lee Baptist Church, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Huskey; mother and stepfather, Lelia and Clyde Harbin; and brother, Allie DeBusk. KIDD, LUCILLE HAZEL - age 85, of Maryville, passed away Friday evening, December 26, 1997, at Asbury Acres Health Care Center. Preceded in death by husband, Albert Kidd. LEE, MR. ROY C. - age 67, passed away December 26, 1997, at his home. He was a heart transplant recipient at St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta, Ga., on June 30, 1988. He was a longtime member, deacon, Sunday School teacher, Training Union Director and Youth Council Leader at Valley Grove Baptist Church, South Knoxville. He served in the U.S. Navy and was retired from ATT Telephone Company after 38 years of service. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Evelyn; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roy Alvin Lee and wife Linda of Louisville, Tenn., Danny and wife Karen of Boise, Idaho; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy Lynn and husband Wm. Andrew Sexton, and Jana Kay and husband Chris Ketron, all of Seymour; seven grandchildren, Brian and Laura Lee, David and Derik Sifford, Jeromy, Jennifer Brooke and Jessica Johnson; four step-grandchildren, Jonathan Sexton, Brandon, Rachel and Angela Keltron; one sister, Kate Ray of Knoxville; several brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. LEMMON, HELEN FAYE (nee Phillips) - of Racine, Wis., passed away Thursday, December 25, at home. She died from a long and courageous battle with cancer. PITTARD, WILLIAM H., JR. - 76, died December 26, 1997, at Shannondale Health Care Center. Mr. Pittard was a deacon at South Knoxville Baptist Church. He was a decorated U.S. Army Veteran of W.W.II. He was awarded the Bronze Star. He was also a former employee of Boiler Supply Co. for 41 years. STANTON, VERNA MARIE - 69, of Seymour, passed away December 27, 1997, at Fort Sanders Regional Hospital in Knoxville. She was a member of Ellejoy Baptist Church. Worked 37 years at Standard Knitting Mills in Knoxville. Preceded in death by parents, Marshall and Hattie Stanton; brother, Winfred Eugene Stanton. Survivors include brother, Lee Stanton; sister, Joyce Householder and husband, Darrell; nephews, Keith Stanton, Randy Householder. STIVERS, ROBERT MILTON, SR. - age 79, of Maryville, formerly of Memphis, died at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, December 27, 1997, in Maryville. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church and the Spark Plug Sunday School class. He was a life member of Memphis Engineers Club and the White Station Lions Club in Memphis. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1942 and was a retired electrical engineer. Preceded in death by his parents, Winthrop and Eva Stivers; brothers, Tom and Winthrop Stivers. Survivors: wife of 55 years, Virginia Thurston Stivers; son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Beth Stivers of Knoxville; daugther and son-in-law, Nancy and Lloyd Rowland of Clifton, Va.; granddaughter, Ali Stivers; three grandsons, Lloyd Rowland, Rob Stivers, and Ben Rowland; sister-in-law, Merva Stivers of Houston, Texas; niece, Ann Stivers of Houston, Texas. TUCKER, LEVI WEBSTER - 86, of Knoxville, passed away December 26, 1997, at Hillcrest West Nursing Home after a long bout with cancer. Mr. Tucker was born October 25, 1911, in Florence, Ala. and was a longtime resident of Knoxville. He was a member of Beaver Ridge United Methodist Church, the IBEW Local #270 and the Masonic Lodge F.& A.M. #503 in Sheffield, Ala. He will be sorely missed by his family and many friends. He is survived by his loving wife, Hazel A. Tucker; daughters, Alice J. Jones of Birmingham, Ala., Susan G. Jones of Knoxville; son, Levi Webster Tucker, Jr. of Leakesville, Miss.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Beaver Ridge United Methodist Church, 7753 Oak Ridge Highway with Rev. Mary Virginia Taylor officiating. UNDERWOOD, ROBERT L. ''BOB'' - age 57, of Powell, went to be with the Lord Saturday, December 27, 1997. Member of Parkwest Church of God and active in the Young at Heart Ministry. Preceded in death by parents, Samuel and Della Knott Underwood; three brothers and two sisters. Survived by wife of 39 years, Phyllis Underwood; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Mary Underwood of Birmingham, Ala.; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and George Estes of Knoxville; grandchildren, Mandy and Caroline Underwood and DeLaney Estes; several nieces and nephews. VOWELL, GLADYS WILLIE - 85, of Clinton, Tenn., died Friday, at Methodist Medical Center. Born September 18, 1912, in Anderson Co., Tenn. She was a member of Charity Baptist Church, Clinton, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Vowell; parents, Andrew and Mary Hammock; sons, Rev. Bill Vowell and Clifford Vowell. Survivors include three daughters, Carol and husband, Willard Rosenbalm of Clinton, Vicki and husband, Larry Robbins of Clinton and Wanda and husband, Melvin Kesterson of Richmond, Va.; one son, Edward and wife, Teresa Vowell of Clinton; one brother, Rev. Clarence Hammock of Clinton; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Marla Vowell and Mary Vowell of Clinton; and several nieces and nephews. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Susan Willocks and Colin Powers of Falls Church, Va.; sisters-in-law, Maurine Sweitzer Baskin of Maryville, Vesta Dzura of Quakertown, Pa.; former husband, Jim Willocks of Sun City Center, Fla.
