BURCHFIEL, JACKSON B.C. ''HIGH POCKETS'' - age 75, of Maryville, died Tuesday, December 23, 1997, at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was a charter member of Maple Grove Baptist Church. Retired from ALCOA with 30 years and nine months of service and was a member of the ALCOA 25 Year Service Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Bill and Mary Jane Sparks Burchfiel; sister, Johnnie Mae Largent; brother, Lonnie Cleadus Burchfiel. Survivors include his wife, Lois Modean Mincy Burchfiel of Maryville; sons and daughters-in-law, William David and Linda Burchfiel, Michael Lynn and Karen Burchfiel; grandchildren, Jason William Burchfiel, Shannon and wife, Bernadette Odom, Talehma Odom, all of Maryville; sister and brother-in-law, Bertha and Sanford Wright of Oliver Springs; mother-in-law, Loretta Mincy; sister-in-law, Evelyn Burchfiel, all of Maryville; several nieces and nephews. CHRISTIAN, WILLIAM V. (BILLY) - age 36, died suddenly Tuesday, December 23, 1997. Preceded in death by daughter, Jennifer Lynn Christian; brother, Charles Richard Lewis; and grandparents, Coye and Agnes Harrell. COLLINS, JESSE - age 65, of Taylor, Mich., formerly of Speedwell, passed away Sunday, December 21, 1997, at his home. He was a Mason and member of the Taylor Lodge #595, Taylor, Mich. and a U.S. Army Veteran. Beloved husband of Trula Pierce Collins, Taylor, Mich.; dear father of Frank (Linda), Victoria Kelley (Wayne), Connie Collins, Gary (Janet) and James; brother of Theodore, Kermit, Maisie Pierce, Dean Grady and Esther Sobanio. COSTNER, PAUL KERMIT JR. - age 51, of Louisville, died 6:25 p.m. Tuesday, December 23, 1997, at University of Tennessee Medical Center. Survivors include Brenda Berry; son, Paul Kenneth Costner of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; granddaughter, Brianna Forrest Costner; brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Sandra Costner of Maryville; niece, Helen Costner; and nephew, Chris Costner. CROPPER, WILLIAM H., JR. (BILL) - of Seymour, passed away Monday, December 22, 1997, at Holston Health Care. He was a member of the Seymour Presbyterian Church. Employed by Newell Office Products, Maryville, Tenn. He was dearly loved and touched us all with his love and laughter. He leaves behind his loving wife, Sue Cropper; daughter and son-in-law, Angel Cropper Davidson and David Davidson, Cumming, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Randi Cropper, New York, New York; granddaughters, Chelsea Cropper, Knoxville, Rachael and Sarah Davidson, Cumming, Ga.; sister and brother-in-law, Bobbie and Ken Bush, Delaware; several nieces and nephews; father-in-law, R.D. DAVIDSON, MARK PATRICK - of Memphis, Tenn., died December 20, 1997, in Jonesboro, Ga. Mark was born in Kansas City, Mo. on September 30, 1973, the son of Martha Taylor Aaron of Memphis, Tenn. and George Herring Davidson of Charlotte, N.C. Mark was pursuing a nursing career and attended East Tennessee State University and the University of Tennessee. He graduated from Williamsville South High School in Buffalo, N.Y. in 1991. Mark was a member of Bellevue Baptist Church, Memphis, Tenn. Survivors include his parents, brothers, Kenneth B. Davidson of Staten Island, N.Y. and Travis A. Davidson of Tonawanda, N.Y.; sisters, Cheryl L. Brown of Ft. Benning, Ga. and Rachelle D. Davidson of Millington, Tenn.; and his paternal grandfather, Edsel A. Davidson of Harmontown, Miss. He was preceded in death by his beloved paternal grandmother, Beatrice C. Davidson and maternal grandparents, Addis and Elsie Taylor. Margret was a member of Christ Covenant Presbyterian Church in Farragut, Pilot Club of Lenoir City and Eastern Star #188. A former member of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church in Knoxville and McIlwain Presbyterian Church in Pensacola, Fla. A former employee of Pensacola Jr. College, General Motors and Eastern Star #9. She had recently attended Dixie Lee Baptist Church in Lenoir City. Preceded in death by husband, Chester M. Dewey; brothers, Charles and Earl Hutton; sister, Mary Rose Mowery. She was a member of Washburn Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Bill M. Farmer. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Joe LaBonte of Knoxville; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Dwight Moberly of High Point, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Lois Farmer of Washburn; son, Stephen E. Survived by son, David Hayes of Knoxville; daughter, Patricia Ubben of Knoxville; grandchildren, Mike, Jeff, Laura, Barbara and Rachel; sister, Una Berberich of Knoxville. HICKS, GERTIE PAULINA - age 92, of Knoxville, passed away Tuesday evening at Baptist Hospital following an illness. Born the daughter of the late William Thomas and Liza Jane Hicks in Blount County, she had lived in the Knox area all of her life and believed the Baptist faith. Preceded in death by her parents; and one brother and two sisters. She is survived by son, Kenneth (Jack) Hicks of Knoxville; sister, Myrtle Chapman of Cleveland, Ohio; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two nieces and one nephew; along with many other family members and friends survive. Funeral services will be Friday evening at 8 p.m. at the Highland South Chapel with Rev. Mark Kidd officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The family will meet at Saturday at 10:45 a.m. for a short prayer in the chapel and then will proceed for an 11 a.m. entombment at Highland South Cemetery. HODGES, WILLIAM CECIL - age 78, of Seymour, passed away Tuesday, December 23, 1997, at his home. Born in Sevier County, Boyds Creek community. Longtime resident of South Knoxville. Retired from Alcoa Aluminum Company with 42 years of service. Member of Providence Baptist Church. Proud veteran of WWII, 802nd Tank Destroyer Battalion. Participated in five major campaigns of the European, African and Middle Eastern Theater including Battle of the Bulge and Normandy Invasion. Preceded in death by parents, Thomas and Nellie Hodges; and brothers, Theodore and Paul Hodges. Survivors: devoted and loving wife of 49 years, Charlotte Strevel Hodges; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Gene Lay; son, William Hodges, Jr.; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Terri Hodges; grandchildren, Rachel Proctor and husband Brad, Jake Lay, Travis Hodges; brothers, Hubert, Winfred, Wiley and Ray Hodges; sister, Martha Patterson. HUDSON, MRS. JUDY M. - age 76, of Maynardville, passed away Tuesday, December 23, 1997, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Mrs. Hudson was of the Baptist faith and preceded in death by her husband, Gordon E. Hudson. Survivors: daughter, Louise A. Ballew of Glenn Allen, Va.; daughters and sons-in-law, Jean M. and Darrell Brewer of Maynardville, Rebecca Bryson McDaniel and John McDaniel of Atlanta, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, Gordon and Retta Hudson of Maynardville; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; special nieces, Barbara Hicks, Lynda Herd, and Elizabeth Crockett, as well as other nieces and nephews. HURLEY, JULIA NELL - age 73, of Maynardville, passed away Wednesday morning, December 24, 1997, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Survivors daughter and son-in-law, Mary and James D. Nevin of Maynardville; granddaughter, Julia and husband, Carson Branum of Knoxville; two great-grandchildren. JEFFERS, GERTRUDE CHAMBERS - age 92, of West Knoxville, passed away on December 23, 1997, at Ft. Sanders Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness. She was a member of Chilhowee Hills Baptist Church for over 60 years. In her younger days she was a Sunday School teacher there and at Central Baptist Church, Fountain City, and was also a public school teacher. She was the daughter of the late James Michael and Cordellia Honeycutt Chambers and the widow of M. Tennyson Jeffers, who was a lawyer and U.S. Postal superintendent. She was also preceded in death by son, Dr. Curtis Jeffers; sister, Margaret C. Jeffers; brothers, Vestie, Marion, Cleeoh and Nathan Chambers. She is survived by three children and spouses, Fay and Tom Robusto, Seymour, Zoe and Calvin Butler, Knoxville, Lynn Jeffers, Greenback; five grandchildren, Lynda Harken, Charleston, S.C., Stephen Jeffers, Tullahoma, Carol Tidwell, Manchester, Debra Jeffers, Nashville, Tom T. She was preceded in death by her husband, Buel Jennings and son, Roy Jennings. Survivors include: daughter, Martha Tucker; son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Helen Jennings and Kenneth and Betty Jennings, all of Maryville; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. LUCAS, DESSIE IRENE - age 82, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, December 24, 1997, at Oak Ridge Health Care Center. She was born January 6, 1915, in Etowah, Tenn. She was a retired secretary with Department of Energy of Oak Ridge. She was a member of Clinton First Baptist Church. Preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Dessie Peoples Lucas. Survivors: sister, Vernettie Curtis and husband, Terry of Atlanta, Ga.; stepmother, Sue Dail Lucas from Clinton; nephews, Hal Currin of Jackson, Tenn., Don Currin of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; niece, Janet Heard of Glendale, Calif.; one great-nephew, five great-nieces; several cousins in Clinton area. McGHEE, LILA M. - age 97, of Route 4, Rutledge, Tenn. (New Corinth community), died at 9 p.m. Monday, December 22, 1997, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital after a lingering illness. She was a member of New Corinth Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert McGhee, Sr.; son, Monford McGhee; and daughter, Anna Lee Collins. She is survived by her son, Hubert McGhee, Jr. of Rutledge; daughter, Nina McGhee of Rutledge; daughter-in-law, Pauline McGhee of Rutledge; son-in-law, Ralph Collins of Rutledge; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. MONTGOMERY, LORENA E. AMBURN - age 85, beloved mother and grandmother, went home to be with the Lord the 23rd of December. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and was a longtime member of Bellmont Heights Baptist Church. She is the mother of Goodwin, Gordon and Thomas Amburn, and Joyce Cross. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Montgomery. She leaves behind 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was a retired employee of Cherokee Textile Mills and a Knoxville native. She will be sorely missed by her family here, but will be welcomed in her new home by her husband of 31 years. Funeral service 6 p.m. Friday at Weaver's Chapel, Rev. Eugene Leamon officiating. Family and friends will meet at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Woodlawn Cemetery for an 11 a.m. graveside service. Pallbearers: Mike Cross, David Amburn, Don Amburn, David Hopkins, Justin McConkey, Brad Gwinn, Randy Smith, Tony Salvo. MULLINS, SADIE C. - age 86, of Knoxville, passed away Tuesday, December 23, 1997, at Brakebill Nursing Home. She was a member of Marble City United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by husband, James E. Mullins. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Moon and Shirley Mullins, Paul and Evelyn Mullins, Kenny Ray and Florene Mullins, all of Knoxville, and Charles and Lois Wilson of Adrian, Mich.; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces, special thoughts and prayers go out to Brakebill Nursing Homes Blue and Beige Wing nurses and aides. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, December 27, 1997, at Marble City United Methodist Church with Rev. John Tiller officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memorial Cemetery. The body will lie in state from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Marble City United Methodist Church in memory of Sadie C. Mullins. NELSON, MARY DELORES - of Knoxville, departed this life Wednesday, December 24, 1997, at Fort Sanders Medical Center. The family will be at 1709 Henrietta Ave. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Unity Mortuary. 

PEARCE, CORENE REBECCA TUNNELL - age 80, of Knoxville, died Monday, December 22, 1997. She was a lifelong resident of Dallas, Texas, preceding her move to Knoxville 21/2 years ago. Mrs. Pearce was a member of University Park United Methodist Church in Dallas and following her move to Knoxville, a member of Middlebrook United Methodist Church. Following 25 years as a dedicated elementary teacher, she was active in her support of the Methodist Home in Waco, Texas, the DAR and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She was an accomplished rose gardener and artist. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Adrian Pearce; daughters, Anita Phipps of Kansas City, Wendy Rankin and husband Doug, Pam Lundy and husband Glenn, all of Knoxville; five grandchildren, Becky Cumley of Kansas City, Colin McDonald of Franklin, Tenn., Shelly McDonald, Ben Rankin and Amanda Rankin Busby, all of Knoxville; and three great-grandchildren. Memorial service 2 p.m. Friday, December 26, 1997, at Middlebrook Pike United Methodist Church with Rev. Gil Smith officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at home at 7405 Somerset Rd., in the Buckingham Independent Living Community. Interment will be in Van, Texas. ROGAN, JANE PORTER - of 416 West Main Street, Rogersville, died Wednesday, December 24, 1997, at Hawkins County Memorial Hospital. Born December 19, 1914, she was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Moore Rogan and Graham Kyle Rogan; and by a sister, Mrs. Thomas Watson Ferrell. A member of the Rogersville Presbyterian Church, she was educated at Fairmont Preparatory School in Washington, D.C. She is survived by a niece, Mrs. Mary Graham Ferrell Hardman of Shropshire, England; nephew, Thomas W. Ferrell of San Diego, Calif.; and a devoted friend, Mrs. Marie Walker. Graveside service will be conducted 10 a.m. Friday, December 26, 1997, at the cemetery adjoining the Rogersville Presbyterian Church with Dr. David L. Hale officiating. SMITH, EVA DIXON - of Holston Hills, passed away Tuesday, December 23, 1997. She was a member of Washington Pike United Methodist Church and the widow of Mr. L.C. Smith. Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughters, Mrs. Warren (Sandra) Nighbert of Hendersonville, Tenn., Mrs. Leon (Betty) Sikes of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; three grandchildren, Warren and Randall Nighbert and Julie Sikes; one brother; and very special loving caregivers. Family and friends will meet at 1:45 p.m. Friday at the main entrance to Greenwood Cemetery for a 2 p.m. graveside service with Rev. Howard W. Clark officiating. THOMPKINS, MRS. WILLIE C. - of Knoxville, departed this life Sunday, December 20, 1997, at her home. Born December 23, 1902, to the late Willie and Sulena Arnold. Preceded in death by husband, Elisha Thompkins; mother, Sirlina Arnold; father, Willie Arnold; sisters, Jennie Arnold, Estella Walker, Fannie Underwood, Mable Ross; and brother, Cleveland Arnold. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and a faithful member of Bethel AME Church for over 60 years. She leaves to mourn her passing: children, Hillavery (Bernitha) Thompkins, Richard Thompkins, Mae Talley, Terrance Sawyer; and adopted daughter, Jenelle Thompkins; sisters, Rosie Sinkfield, LeoTra (Jerry) Davis; and brother, Harvey Arnold; devoted grandchildren, Tommy (Carl) Thompkins, Sandra Dickey, Leroy (Tammy) Sawyer, Rhonda and Teadra Thompkins; 14 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. TRIPP, DOROTHY WATSON - of Detroit, Mich., passed away December 22, 1997, at her home. Preceded in death by sister, Bridget Watson of Knoxville. YOUNG, MRS. ANDREANA P. GALLMAN - of 6909 Denwood Road, Knoxville, departed this life December 23, 1997, at UT Memorial Hospital. Born in Pomarie, S.C., on October 24, 1924, to Thomas and Bessie Gallman. Retired from the Knoxville/Knox County school systems after 35 years of service. She was a faithful member of the Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church. Preceded in death by father, Thomas Gallman; and mother, Bessie G. Baker. Those left to cherish her memory are husband of 58 years, Archie (Mike) Young; devoted son and daughter-in-law, Willie James and Lillian Young; devoted daughter, Bessie D.
