BALDWIN, RICKY EUGENE - age 38, of LaFollette, Tenn. passed away December 12, 1997, at LaFollette Hospital, after a long battle with brain cancer. Formerly of Hesperia, Calif., Mr. Baldwin was a technician with Pacific Telesis in Los Angeles. Born January 31, 1959, in Knoxville, Tenn. He attended the First Baptist Church in LaFollette. Preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles and Ina Mae Beets and Vetress Baldwin. Survivors: parents, Gilbert and Veldon Baldwin of LaFollette; sister, Crystal Baldwin and niece, Tiffany Willis of Covina, Calif.; uncles, Ray Beets of Yougstown, Ohio, Glen, Clarence and Claude Beets of Knoxville, Harold Baldwin of Kansas; aunts, Charlotte Dixon of Cincinnati, Ohio, Shirley Ghormley of Kansas City, Missouri, Charlene Underwood, Deanna Russell and Gloria McClain of Knoxville; many cousins and friends. BOYD, PEARL MURRAY - 85, of 2975 Brethren Church Road, White Pine, died Sunday, December 14, 1997. A native of Canton, N.C., she was the daughter of the late James and Cannie Evans Murray and wife, of the late Elbert Z. Boyd who died in 1991. She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church of White Pine. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and John Turner of White Pine, Tenn.; her son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Pat Boyd of White Pine, Tenn.; grandchildren, Angie Boyd Keck of Talbott, Tenn. adn John Turner II of White Pine, Tenn.; one great-grandchild, Brianna Turner; a brother, Lynn Murray of Canton, N.C. Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church of White Pine with the Rev. Charles Harrison officiating. BRANCH, BETTY JEAN - age 63, of Knoxville, died 11:30 a.m. Sunday, December 14, 1997, at the family home. Member of Glen Oaks Baptist Church. BYRD, JOHN RANDALL ''RANDY'' - age 34, of Route 1, Rutledge, died Sunday morning, December 14, 1997, at his residence after an arduous battle with cancer. He was an active member of the Grassy Fork Church of Christ in Hartford, Tenn. and was employed as an industrial mason for Wasco, Inc. and was also self-employed as a cattle farmer. Preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Everett and Martha Byrd; maternal grandparents, Sherwood and Emma Shockley; father, John Ray Byrd; and his uncle, Jim Byrd. Surviving are his wife, Deborah A. Byrd of the home; daughter, Sarah Maggie Byrd of the home; son, Thomas John Byrd of the home; mother, Mary F. Trent; stepfather, Norman Trent; sisters, Debbie Manley and Michelle Jones; several uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, church brethren and friends. Survived by children, Helen Noe of Lenoir City, Roy Lee Drain, Margaret Reed, and Charles Drain, all of Knoxville; three sisters; one brother; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. GILBERT, DR. CLAIRE ERIN - age 96, of Knoxville, died on Sunday, December 14, 1997, at Shannondale Health Care Center. She was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church for over 50 years. Born in Paris, she received a bachelor's degree from Union University, a master's degree from Iowa State University, and a doctorate from Cornell University. An educator for 47 years she retired from UT's College of Home Economics and the Agricultural Extension Service in 1970. She spent two years at Baroda University, India, as a home science technician. Charter member of Union University's Upsilon Chapter of Chi Omega and longtime member of Knoxville's Council of Aging. Active member in the Tennessee and American Home Economics Association, Altrusa Club of Knoxville, and Epsilon Sigma Phi Honorary Extension Fraternity. Named ''Woman of the Year'' by Progressive Farmer Magazine, a Knoxville ''Valuable Senior Citizen'' by Northside Kiwanis Club, cited by the National Council of Christians and Jews for Significant Religious Service, and listed in ''Personalities of the South'' and as a ''Distinguished Service Alumni'' of Union University. The Student Commons and Cafeteria were named for her and Grace Powers Hudson (The Gilbert Powers Building). She was included in UT's ''Century of Leaders in Human Ecology'' in 1997. Preceded in death by parents, Ernest and Erin Gilbert; brother, Robert Clint Gilbert; and sister-in-law, Helene Roth Gilbert. Survived by great-nephew and wife, Clint and Brenda Gilbert of Marietta, Ga.; and great-niece, Gayle Loftin and her son, Jason Williams of Mt. Preceded in death by parents, Hubert and Doris Grace; brothers, Ralph and Charles Jr. Grace; sister, Edna Stewart Hudson. Survivors: wife of 42 years, Maxine Grace; son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Linda Grace; granddaughter, Jordon Leigh Grace, all of Harriman. GRIZZLE, TIMOTHY EUGENE - age 29, of New Market, passed away Friday, December 12, 1997, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. GUTHRIE, CATHERINE (SHORTY) CANNON - age 85, of Sweetwater, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 1997, at the Sweetwater Valley Convalescent Home after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tim Guthrie, Jr.; sisters, Susan Hancher and Margaret (Ted) Patton. She was a member of the Christ Presybterian Church of Sweetwater. Mrs. Guthrie was raised in Paullina, Iowa but the Cannon family originated in Philadelphia, Tenn. During her lifetime she taught piano and helped several generations of students to appreciate music. Survivors: daughters, Suzy Guthrie of Knoxville, Julia Guthrie of Coker Creek; sons and daughter-in-law, Tim and Sylvia Guthrie III of Dayton, Ohio, Charlie Guthrie of Indianapolis, Ind.; grandchildren, Tim IV, Julie, Kathy, Cassie, Lee, Erin and Sky; great-grandson, Joseph Anthony; several nieces and nephews. The body is at Kyker Funeral Home, Sweetwater, where the family will receive friends from 12 noon until 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Preceded in death by husband, Thurman (Mickey) Hazelwood; mother, Nancy Roberts Roach; father, Samuel Roberts; sisters, France Waugh, Cindy Connor, Carrie Smith; and brother, Ross Roberts. HUSKEY, NORA KATHERYN BELL - 68, of Powell, passed away Sunday, December 14, 1997, at St. Mary's Hospital. She was a member of Norwood Baptist Church for 40 years, past matron of AREMA Chapter #466 O.E.S. Preceded in death by parents, Robert R. and Nellie Bell; and brother, Bobby Bell. Survivors: husband of 50 years, Vaughn L. Huskey; daughter, Sue Rhodes; grandchildren, Suzanne and Christin Bumgardner; many other friends and church family. KANE, MRS. CHARLES S. (CLARA DOROTHY ELLIOTT) - widow of 41 years of Knoxville's first advertising agent, died Friday afternoon, December 12, 1997. She was 96. Longtime member of former Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, then for years Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church, and in later years First Presbyterian Church.
