CAREY, WARREN “BRAD,” 41, of Morristown, died suddenly at St. Mary’s Hospital on January 4, 1999, after suffering a heart attack. He was a graduate of Morristown-Hamblen High School West and attended Walters State Community College. He was previously employed by Mahle Inc., and Daniel’s Construction Co., and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Morristown. Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Thursday in Allen Funeral Home Chapel with interment 2 p.m. Friday in Sunderland Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. prior to the funeral service. KYLE, LILLIAN M., age 79, of 4361 Ashford Dr., Morristown, passed away Monday, Jan. 4, 1999 at Morristown-Hamblen Hospital. CARPENTER, GEORGE H., age 65, of Mooresburg, passed away Thursday, January 7, 1999 at Jefferson City Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was a member of Bible View Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Carpenter; mother, father, brothers, and sister. Survivors include: son, Lester Carpenter of Greeneville; daughter, Janice White of Ohio; sons, Jeff Carpenter and Steve Carpenter of Ohio; step-children, Randy Russell, Keith Russell, and Tammy Russell of Morristown; 11 grandchildren. CLARK, ROBERT FRANK, died on Thursday January 7, 1999, at Heritage Center. He was the son of the late J. Allen Clark and Matoka Sexton Clark and was preceded in death by sisters, Mrs. Pearl Randall, Mrs. Roxie Humphreys, Vera Frances Clark and brother, William M. (Sixty) Clark. He was born in Del Rio and lived in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Fla., thirty six years where he owned and operated the Beachcomber Barber Shop. He was a charter member of First Church of God (Anderson, IN.) of Ft. Lauderdale, where he served on a number of boards, including Board of Trustees and was head usher for more than thirty years. He was a member of Gideons International. After returning to Tennessee in 1988, he attended the First Church of God, W. Economy Road in Morristown. Survivors include his wife, Frances Pauline Clark; sisters, Mrs. Nellie Clark and Mrs. Pauline Greer; two nephews, Ronnie and Terry Clark of Greeneville; one niece, Carolyn Alexander of Johnson City; nephews by marriage, Eugene and M.R. Courtney, H.C. and Ronnie White of Whitesburg, C.A. Walker of Bradenton, Fla.; nieces by marriage, Mrs. Aileen Early of Whitesburg and Mrs. Marjorie Range of Elizabethton. KNOWLING, ELMER W., age 91, of Talbott, passed away 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 6, 1999, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital. He was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church; a retired farmer; and a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army. Survivors include his wife, Julia Hopkins Knowling of Talbott; brother, Horace Knowling of Billings, Montana; sister, Grace Hill of Talbott; several nieces and nephews. COOK, PATSY ANN, age 60, of Bean Station, formerly of Morristown, passed away Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999 at Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System. She had lived at Heritage Center for 14 months. She was a member of Noeton Missionary Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Harvey Cook. Survivors: special aunt and uncle, Clora and Richard Wright of Bean Station, with whom she made her home for three years; several other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. SPITZER, EMERSON CALVIN, 91, of Rogersville, passed away Wednesday, January 6, 1999 at Church Hill Health Care Center, after a short illness. He was a member of East Rogersville Baptist Church, and was retired from Gluck Brothers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman and Deliah Spitzer; wife, Elsie Spitzer; daughters, Faye Long and Marlene Poe; one brother; and five sisters. Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Jerry Gilmore; son and daughter-in-law, E.C. and Edna Spitzer, all of Rogersville; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. BATES, BETTY J. , age 59, of Morristown, passed away Friday, January 8,
1999, at Lakeway Regional Hospital. She was preceded in death by her
parents, John Wiley and Bonnie Mary Green Lamb; and brother, Lonnie
Lamb. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Aaron (Pete) and
Peggy Shiflet and Armon (Danny) and Ann Shiflet, of Talbott;
grandchildren, Misty, Tasha and Derek Shiflet; and one great-grandson;
sisters, Lilly Sinard of White Pine and Terrie Braden of Morristown;

April 20, 1970, passed away on Jan. 9, 1999 on Hwy. 25-E in a car
accident. He worked at Johnson Construction Company. He was preceded in

LAWSON, CHRISTINE (LORETTA), age 46 years, 11 months and 17 days of age,
of Sneedville passed away Friday, Jan. 8, 1999 at the Baptist Hospital
in Knoxville. She was born January 22, 1952. She professed faith in
Christ at an early age and joined Brewer’s Chapel Baptist Church, then
joined Big Creek Missionary Baptist Church and remained a member until
death. She was preceded in death by her father, Johnny Royston; and
brother, Clyde (Lono) Royston; and several aunts and uncles. She leaves
her loving husband, Wiley Lawson of the home; daughters, Felicia Lawson;
and fiancee, Jason Anderson of Sneedville, Jennifer Lawson and special

at Lakeway Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Bertha Shropshire

Midway, died Saturday morning, Jan. 9, 1999 at her home. Funeral

RHOTEN, MELVIN KENNETH, 91, Church Hill, Tennessee, born July 16, 1907 at Clinchport, Virginia, died January 7, 1999, at Indian Path Hospital. He began his career as a Morse Telegraph Operator, Appalachian Division, Southern Railway Company, on October 28, 1924; he was promoted to Train Dispatcher May, 1950, and retired from the Knoxville Tennessee Dispatcher Office December 30, 1972, having a 48-year service connection with Southern Railway Company. He was a charter member of the Valley Church of Christ, and before moving to Knoxville in the 1950’s, he served as an Elder of the Watauga Street Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Grace Necessary Rhoten; his parents, Emory Joseph and Bessie Kindle Rhoton; a brother, Arthur M. Rhoton; a step-granddaughter, Kathy Ensley; and a son-in-law, Rex W. Chapman. He is survived by two sons, Jack F. Rhoten (wife, Inez), Kingsport, Tennessee, and James K. Rhoten (wife-Mary), Rogersville, Tennessee; four daughters, Patsy Chapman, Weber City, Virginia, Jessie Cornett (husband-Carl), Church Hill, Tennessee, Frances Norton (husband-Charles), Morristown, Tennessee, and Judy Holmes (husband-Russell), Nokesville, Virginia; 21 grandchildren/step grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren/step grandchildren; one great-great grandson; brothers, Eugene Rhoton (wife-Virginia), Kingsport, Tennessee, and E.J. Rhoton (wife-Nell), Clinchport, Virginia; one sister, Hazel Dorton, Gate City, Virginia; and four nieces. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, January 10, 1999, at Oak Hill Funeral Home, with Charles Huff and Tim Hall officiating. Grandsons served as pallbearers. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Rosa Green McDaniel; sisters, Ruby Marion, Bonnie Collins, Mary Etta DePew, and Eva Arnold; brothers, James, Clyde and Lawrence McDaniel.
