PATTY, ARTHUR B. JR., (A.B.), age 72, of Morristown, passed away 10:35 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998 at UT Medical Center in Knoxville. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 767 of Morristown; retired in 1988 with 39 years service with B.A.S.F. and was preceded in death by parents, Arthur B. Patty Sr., and Susan Gideon Patty; brothers, Mayford, Floyd, Claude, Paul and Sam; sisters, Mary Sue Lide, Edna Caylor, Ina Tittsworth, Ruby Padgette; daughter, Beverly Kelly of Morristown. EALY, MRS. MARTHA PAULINE HANCE, of Newport, born May 3, 1906 in Cocke County, passed away November 4, 1998 at Mariner Health Care of Newport. She was a homemaker. STEWART, BROTEN JIM, of 110 Buford Street, Celina, Tennessee, was born September 27, 1934 in Sneedville, Hancock Co. Tenn., to Joe and Hannah Johnson Stewart. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Hannah Stewart; brothers, Claude and Albert Stewart. He passed away November 4, 1998 at his residence at the age of 64. He was a maintenance man for Chrysler Foundry for approximately 25 years. After he retired he moved to Celina, TN., where he did electrical and carpentry work. He was married to Pauline Arms who preceded him in death. Survivors: son, Howard Ray Dodson of Celina, Tennessee; daughters, Josephine Marlor of Indianapolis, Indiana, Lovie Taylor of New Palestine, Indiana; brother, Gale Stewart of Sneedville; sister, Viola Penington of North Carolina; several nieces and nephews. BAILEY, STEVE GREGORY, age 42, of Rutledge, passed away Tuesday, November 10, 1998 in Philadelphia, PA. He was a member of Iron Workers Local 384 since 1974. Mr. Bailey is survived by his loving wife of three years, Janie and daughter Eliza Jane; mother and father George and Junav Bailey of Mascot; brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Jo Bailey and son Gabe of Knoxville; sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Mike Stalans and sons John and Wes of Blaine. BARNES, JAMES W., age 57, of Morristown, passed away November 13,1998 at Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare. He was of the Baptist Faith and was a Veteran of Coast Guard. He had 34 years of service with Bell South, was a member of Telephone Pioneer and a long time Youth Baseball Coach for Parks and Recreation. Preceded in death by his parents, Myrtle and James A. Barnes, sister, Edith B. Ailey and brother, Raymond Barnes. Survivors: Wife of 30 years, Carol Barnes of Morristown; son, Matthew J. COLLINS, O.J. (JIMMY), 74 years of age, a resident of Morristown, Tenn. formerly of Shelby Valley area passed away Tuesday Nov. 10, 1998 at the Fort Sanders Reg. Medical Center in Knoxville, Tenn. He was born April 10, 1924; the son of the late Ernest Edward and Flora Hall Collins. He was a retired miner and a member of Thomas C. Cecil Masonic Lodge #375. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Collins. He is survived by one son, James E. Collins of Morristown, Tenn. and one daughter, Jimmie Louanne Taylor of Daytona Beach, Florida; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. JAMES, SHERIDAN, 60, of Morristown, died Friday, November 13,1998 at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Erwin and Maxie Greene James. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and was of the Pentecostal faith. JONES, MR. LEON WILSON, 82, of 1206 McDowell Drive died at 4:30 p.m. November 13,1998 at the Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. Mr. Jones’ funeral will be held at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church 2:30 p.m. Sunday, November 15,1998. Burial will follow at Westminster Gardens. Leon Wilson Jones was born in Stokesdale on June 16, 1916 to the late Daniel Arthur Jones and Ida Young Jones. He has been a life long resident of Guilford County and was a long time member of Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church, having served as teacher, and board member for many years. He was a life member of the North Carolina Congress of Parent and Teachers, a member, past president, and treasurer of the Guilford College Lions Club as well as a District Director of the Lions Club. He was a member of Buena Vista Lodge #21 Independent Order of Oddfellows. Mr. Jones was employed by Guilford Mills from its inception until his retirement in 1985. He was co-owner of Stokesdale Hardware for many years. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis A. Jones; daughters, Leonna Jones Prater of Morristown, Tennessee, Rebecca Jones Shaw of Asheboro and Margaret Ellen Jones Kiser of Concord, N.C.; brother, Eugene Worth Jones of Greensboro; sisters, Eleanor Cottrell of Greensboro, N.C., Treva Garrison of Reidsville, N.C. and Phyllis Warren of Stokesdale, N.C.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. TODD, DR. GARY PRICE, MD, 57, of 1223 Fox Run Rd., Waynesville, N.C. passed away Friday, November 13,1998 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Asheville, N.C. A native of Starr, S.C. he is the son of Louise Rainey Todd of Starr, S.C. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph A. Todd Sr. and a brother, James M. Todd of Clarkesville, Ga. Dr. Todd graduated valedictorian from the Waynesville High School in 1959. He received his B.S. and B.A. degrees from the Carson-Newman College. He graduated from Bowman Gray School of Medicine, served his internship at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Va. and his residency at the Bethesda Naval Hospital, Bethesda, MD. in ophthalmology. Dr. Todd worked with the International Eye Foundation in Ethiopia and as an eye surgeon in Japan for the Army, Air Force, Navy and all Embassy personnel for three years. He moved from Japan to Waynesville where he practiced ophthalmology and was a Scout Master in Waynesville for 10 years. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Clara W. Todd of the home; two sons, Frank Todd of Santa Barbara, CA. and George Todd of Orlando, Fla.; brother, Joe A. Todd of Charlotte, N.C.; and a sister, Mary E. Todd of Starr, S.C. Memorial services will be held 3:00 p.m., Sunday, November 15,1998 at the Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Lake Junaluska, N.C., where he was a member, with Rev. Rob Fuquay officiating. ROSENBALM, MR. ROBERT FRANKLIN (STONEY), age 57, born on February 17, 1941, was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 15, 1998, while at home after battling with cancer. He was a member of the Sugar Grove Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Rosenbalm; infant sister, Marie Rosenbalm. Mrs. Horner was a member of the Oakland Baptist Church in Rutledge and was preceded in death by her husband, H.K. Horner; sister, Goldie Clevenger; and parents, Dave and Mae Davis Tate. HICKEY, WALTER NEIL “TOBE,” age 78, of White Pine, passed away suddenly Monday morning, November 16, 1998 at his home. He was a member of the White Pine Church of God and was a retired truck driver and supervisor for Roy Widner Truck Lines after 15 years of service and had also worked for Gluck Bros. LONG, ALMA, 75, passed away Sunday evening in Ft. Sanders Hospital, Knoxville. She was a member of Alpha Baptist Church and was a retired bookkeeper with Hamilton Bank. Mrs. Long was preceded in death by her husband, James Long; two sisters, Ociner Lane and Jeannie Melton; four brothers, Paul, Charlie, Pink and Samuel Murray. CARPENTER, JOHN C. (CURT), born July 13, 1922, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, November 18, 1998 at Lakeway Regional Hospital. He was a resident of Morristown. Curt was a faithful member and deacon of Calvary Baptist Church for many years, also a local business man for many years. He owned and operated Wolfe Dairies for sixteen years and was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific four years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilson and Clara Mustin Carpenter and brother, Glenn Carpenter. He was a loving husband and father, survived by wife, Iva Harrell Carpenter; son, Johnny Carpenter and daughter-in-law, Louise Carpenter; grandsons, John, Matthew and Kevin; great-granddaughter, Roxy; sisters: Mary Stapleton Munsey and husband, Glenn, Helen Carpenter Brock and husband, James; sister-in-law, Dorothy Carpenter. He was a second father to youngest sister, Trixie Sue and husband, Bob Clowers. A host of loving nieces and nephew; many, many devoted friends and loved ones.
