Nettie Sue Swagerty, 79, of Newport, passed away Friday, November 20.
She was retired from the Newport City School System after teaching
for many years.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Gwendolyn Swagerty
of Newport, Vereda and Donnas Waller of Knoxville, and Evelynne Swagerty
and Wilbur Edwards Jr. of Sharon, Massachusetts; sisters, Della Sanders
of Indianapolis, Indiana, Marion Berry of Springfield, Massachusetts, Mamie
Julian of Chattanooga, and Bernice Banks and Essie Barton, both of Newport;
one brother, Roland Dykes Jr. of Newport; grandchildren, Christopher Swagerty,
Credris Waller, Marissa Edwards, and Ariella Edwards; great-grandchildren,
Juron and Quinton Swagerty; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the Manes Funeral
Home Chapel with the Revs. Charles Owensby, E.O. Cole and Leroy Franklin
officiating, with the family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. prior
to the services.
Entombment will be 10 a.m. Tuesday morning in the Resthaven Memorial
Gardens Mausoleum.

James Welch Sr., 85, of Newport, died Friday at his home in Newport.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys McGaha Welch of Newport; son, James

Patsy and Bill Sutton, Judy and George Calfee, and Gail and Walt Sutton,
all of Newport; brothers, Rufus Hartsell of Dandridge and Robert Welch

Angela Ramsey of Newport, Chris Calfee of Alabama, Rusty Sutton, Scott

eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend,

Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Manes Funeral
Home Chapel. Rev. Ed Hardison and Rev. Charles McGill officiated. Burial
was 2 p.m. Sunday at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

Died: 11/25/1998
Glennie Emmaline Hurst, 94, of Sevierville, died Sunday, November 22,
at Sevier Health Care Center.
She was a member of Dandridge Church of God but more recently attended
Middle Creek Church of God.
She was preceded in death by husband, Isaac (Ike) Hurst; sons, Edward
Hurst, Richard Hurst, Bobby Hurst, and Virgil Hurst; and daughters, Genevive
Woods and Noreen Terry.
Survivors: children, Agnes Williams, Sevierville, Roy Hurst, Lexington,
Kentucky, Wanda Reed, Seymour, and Charles (Dub) Hurst, Cedartown, Georgia;
45 grandchildren; 77 great-grandchildren; 43 great-great-grandchildren;
and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was 7 p.m. Tuesday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral
Home with Rev. James Prince officiating. Interment was 11 a.m. Wednesday
in Thomas Cemetery.

Mary Lou Swartout, 75, of Etowah, passed away Sunday morning at Baptist
Hospital in Newport.
A life-long resident of McMinn County, Mrs. Swartout was a member of
the Etowah Church of God.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Nora Griffith
Fetzer.
Survivors: husband, Hoyt Swartout, Etowah; three daughters and sons-in-law,
Nancy and Tom Block, Etowah, Nora and Charles Wilson, Newport, and Mary
Jane and Scott Murphy, Etowah; grandchildren, Jeff and Julie Wilson, Amy
and Jeremy Caldwell, Jennifer Wilson, Allison Block, and Cody, Michael
and Andrea Murphy; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Nina Mae Rowland,
Etowah, and Jackie Seaborn and Nora Shell, both of Cleveland; brother,
D.R. Fetzer, Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews.

Neva Bible Madron, 72, of the Bybee community, passed away Thursday,
November 26.
Neva was preceded in death by her father, Keel Bible.

Eliza Lane Bible, Warrensburg; sisters, Marlene Ayers and June Jarrell,

Died: 11/30/1998
Betty Jo Helton Butler, (beloved mother and grandmother), 63, of Newport,
died Friday, November 27, after a short battle with cancer.
She was a native of Sevier County. She spent several years working
in Oak Ridge before retiring to farm, first in Sevier County and then to
the Point Pleasant Community of Cocke County.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Reba Helton of
Sevierville; and brother, Kenneth Wade Helton of Indiana.
Survivors: husband, Harold Butler; son and daughter-in-law, Tony and
Nancy Whaley; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Phillip Randolph; grandchildren,
Kristen and Justin Whaley and Alex and Sydney Randolph; brothers and sisters-in-law,
Herbert and Shirley Helton and Leroy and Barbara Helton; sister and brother-in-law,
Ernestine and Ed Biddle; sister-in-law, Cleo Helton; special relatives,
Virgil and Edna Emert, David and Mary Emily Russell, and Howard and Phyllis

Maudina V. Lewis, 70, of Newport, passed away Sunday, Nov. 29, at her
daughter’s home in Murfreesboro following a lengthy illness.
She was a member of Dutch Bottoms Baptist Church.
Maudina was preceded in death by her husband, James Lyle Lewis; granddaughter,
Terri Jo Stuart; and sister, Iva Cameron.
She is survived by children, Clifford Lewis of Newport, Juanita and
husband, George Slaven of Murfreesboro, Emma Kate and husband, Fred Dyke,
and Janelle and husband, Eugene Wright, all of Newport; seven grandchildren;
four great-grandchildren; brothers, Claude Valentine, Fred Valentine, Pedro

Lygatha France, Vadda Queen, and a very special sister, Mary Brown.

at the Baptist Hospital of Cocke County.
He was a member of the Newport Church of God.
Lawrence was a supervisor with the A.C. Lawrence Leather Co. before
his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Louise Burgess;
son, L.J. Burgess; granddaughter, Nicole Burgess; sister, Marietta Worex;
and brothers, John and Dewey Burgess.
He is survived by his wife, Irene Faye Burgess of Newport; children,
Rendall and his wife, Portia Burgess of Johnson City and Trevor and his

home following a lengthy illness.
She was a member of the McCowans Creek Church of God.

She is survived by her husband, Buford (Dugan) Calfee; a son, Buford
Calfee Jr. and his wife, Linda, all of Newport; sisters, Maxie and her
husband, Ed Shockley and Marie Everhart, all of Morristown; brothers, J.C.
(Rip) and his wife, Frances Holdway of Newport and Ralph (Pig) and his
wife, Mary Holdway of White Pine; grandchildren, Bradford and Cassandra

Isaac "Jack" Cogdill
Died: 12/02/1998
Isaac "Jack" Cogdill, 81, of Mannington Township, New Jersey, died
suddenly Monday, November 30, at his home.
Born in Newport, son of the late Joseph and Mary Alice Shelton Cogdill,
he had been a long-time area resident.
Mr. Cogdill had been employed as a technician and heavy equipment operator
for A. Clemente Inc. for 27 years prior to retiring in 1982. He had previously
been employed by Seabrook Farms for 16 years.
Mr. Cogdill was preceded in death by a son, Robert; a grandson, Richard,
Jr.; two brothers, Ferman and Walter; and two sisters, Thelma and Martha.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Hazel (nee Harris); two sons,
Donald, Sr. of Pedricktown, New Jersey, and Richard, Sr. of Mannington,
New Jersey; a daughter, Jean Strace of Woodlands, Texas; two brothers,
Olenis of Newport, and Albert of Elmer, New Jersey; a sister, Lura White
of Knoxville; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday from the H.T. Layton
& Son Home For Funerals, 102 S. Main St., Woodstown, New Jersey, where
friends are invited to call one hour prior to services.
Interment will be in Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro, New Jersey.

as the result of an automobile accident.

Fred Nolen McCoig, 86, of Newport, passed away Monday evening at his
home following a lengthy illness.
Nolen was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church, where he had
served as past chairman of deacons, church treasurer for 10 years, Sunday
school teacher, and Training Union director.
He had worked at Alcoa Aluminum, Overholt’s Hardware, and retired from
Newport Federal in 1982 after 21 years of service.
Nolen was preceded in death by his first wife, Beth Murrell McCoig;
his parents, Abigail and Albert McCoig; and brothers, Forrest and Frank
McCoig.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ethel Sweeten McCoig of Newport;
son, David, and his wife, Jerelene McCoig of Little Rock, Arkansas; sister,
Beatrice and her husband, Roland Bible; brother, James, and his wife, Charlotte
McCoig, all of White Pine; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at
the Brown Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jim Lindsay officiating.

Dexter Monroe Raines, 82, formerly of Newport, died December 8 at VA
Hospital in Murfreesboro, after a lengthy illness.
He was a WWII veteran.
He had been employed by A.C. Lawrence Leather Co.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Gorrell Raines; and son,
Charles Ransom Raines.
Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Bob Ford; sons and
daughters-in-law, J.C. and Wanda Raines and Donald and Jean Raines, all
of Newport; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Bill

James Edgar Anders, 65, of Dandridge, died Wednesday, December 9, at
Baptist Hospital of Cocke County after a brief illness.
He was a native of Buncombe Co., North Carolina, and had resided in
Newport for the past 10 years. He retired in 1988 from Permag Magnetics
and attended First Baptist Church of Newport. He was a veteran of the U.S.
Army.
He was a son of the late William Oville Anders.
Surviving are his mother, Jennie Wallen Anders of Newport; wife, Wilma
Anders of the home; daughters, Lisa Myres of Chandler, Arizona, and Teresa
Coffey of Howell, Michigan; sons, Roger and James Anders of Toledo, Ohio,
and William Anders of Newport; sisters, Mary Allen of Asheville, North
Carolina, Dorthy Yeary and Margaret Cutler, both of Cleveland, Ohio, and
Myrtle Gunter of Newport; brother, Jack of Fairview, North Carolina; and
10 grandchildren.

Alene Allen Ramsey, 66, of Newport, passed away Thursday, December
10, at her home.
She was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church and was retired
from Hunt’s Foods.
She had worked most of her life at Stokely Brothers and later Quaker
Oats plants in Newport.
She was remembered as a good friend and neighbor and a faithful member
of her church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Bruce Ramsey; parents,
Frank and Lillie (Clevenger) Allen; brothers, Hardy and Hal Allen; sisters,
Arlene Webb and Alma Black; and nephew, Donald Ray Britt.
Survivors include her son, Tim Ramsey, Newport; grandson, Jeremy Bruce
Ramsey, Newport; sisters and brothers-in-law, Anna Kate and Robert James,
Newport, and Ada and Jay Hardin, Newport; brother and sister-in-law, Hollis
Allen and Dean Allen, Newport; sister-in-law, Irene Allen, Newport; brothers-in-law,

Hureta Gillette Smith of Morristown, husband of Huberta Gillette Smith,
passed away Thursday morning, December 10.
He was born September 10, 1925, and married on May 8, 1948. Billie
retired from BASF.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Talmidge and Sarah Smith of
Cocke County; and two brothers, Winton and Wayne Smith.

Flora Drinnon, Bernice Gillette, Blanche Smith, and Venie Smith; and several
nieces and nephews.
Billie’s family comes together at this time for comfort, but also to
remember how much Billie loved our Lord, Morningside Baptist Church, and
his family with all his heart. Billie was a humble and honest man in all
he said and did. We thank God for our time with him and find strength in
knowing he is in heaven.
The family will receive friends on Saturday evening, December 12, at
Morningside Baptist Church from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. with funeral services
to be held immediately thereafter. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m.
on Sunday, December 13, at Hamblen Memory Gardens with the Revs. Ross Woody
and George Johnson officiating.

Died: 12/14/1998
Mabel L. Biggio, 78, of Newport, formerly of Plantation, Florida, died
December 11 at Mariner Health Care of Newport.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lou and Tom McDonald
of Newport; son and daughter-in-law, John and Lan Angelo of Durham, North
Carolina; daughter, Susan Nowotne of Sarasota, Florida; and grandchildren,
Kia Nowotne of San Francisco, California, Kathleen Miller of Sarasota,
Florida, and other grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of
Newport.

Charles Brown Hawk
Died: 12/14/1998
Charles Brown Hawk, 72, of Afton, died Friday morning, December 11,
at Johnson City Medical Center.
He was a former employee of Pet Milk Co. and a retired employee of
George C. Moore Co. He was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church
and United Methodist Men of Mt. Zion U.M. Church.
He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was the son of the late Horace and Iona
Ottinger Hawk and was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Frank
Hawk; and three sisters, Sally Vick, Mary Ottinger, and Dean Reel.
Survivors: wife, Elizabeth Morrison Hawk; four daughters and three
sons-in-law, Melissa and Johnny Vest and Beverly and Dennis Russell, all
of Afton, Carolyn and Mike Conte of Florida, and Katherine Franklin of
Mosheim; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jeff and Linda Hawk of Afton
and Douglas Willis of New York; one stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, David
Allen and Connie Blake of Chuckey; beloved mother-in-law, Edna Morrison
of Chuckey; six grandchildren including two very special grandchildren,
Jennifer and Joseph Vest; one great-granddaughter; one brother and sister-in-law,
Billy Dale and Betty Hawk of Greeneville; one sister and brother-in-law,
Vontriece and Glen Ottinger of Parrottsville; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Zion U.M. Church with Rev.
David Woody and Rev. Frank Lethcoe officiating. Interment was in the church
cemetery.
The body remained at Kiser Funeral Home until time to be taken to the
church thirty minutes preceding the services.
The family received friends 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday
at Kiser Funeral Home. Active pallbearers: J.C. Bright, Argel Ripley, Olen
Kilday, Hubert Ottinger, Dallas Ottinger, Kyle Swinney, Randy Swinney,
and Bobby Morrison. Honorary pallbearers: Rev. Taylor Haun, Tim Hawk, Teddy
Hawk, Chris Hawk, Ronnie Reel, Kenny Reel, men of the Victory Sunday school
class of Mt. Zion U.M. Church and the Men’s Club of Mt. Zion U.M. Church,
Dr. Charles Montgomery, Dr. James Rodgers, Johnny Ottinger, Tommy Vick,
and Jimmy Vick.
