Lester Leon Witt
Died: 09/07/1998
Lester Leon Witt, 67, passed away Friday morning in a Knoxville hospital following a lengthy illness.
He drove a bus for the Cocke County School System for 27 years before his retirement in 1991.
He is survived by his children, Johnny and his wife, Charmaine Witt, of Parrottsville, Lester Leon Jr. and his wife, Linda Witt, of Morristown, Christy and her husband, Wayne Wardroup, of Newport, Ronnie and his wife, Virginia Witt, of Morristown, and Linda Litz, of Dandridge; sisters, Virginia Dyke and Lois Wise, of Newport; brothers, Doyle and Hazen Witt, both of Newport; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Brown Funeral Chapel with Rev. Joe Bible officiating with interment in the Fowler’s Grove Cemetery.
The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday evening at the Brown Funeral Home.

William Homer Harris
Died: 09/09/1998
William Homer Harris, 89, of Knoxville, passed away September 7.
He was a member of Park Lane Baptist Church, Riders of the Silver Screen Association, a veteran of World War II, and a member of the VFW.
He was preceded in death by his son, Homer David Harris; parents, Dr. David and Debbie Laws Harris; sister, Nora Harris; and brothers, Oscar and Dorman Harris.
Survivors include his wife, Charline Harris; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and William Canupp and Janet and Jerry Mynatt; daughter, Judy Weathers; daughter-in-law, Jeanette Harris; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Harris Bowling, of Knoxville; brother, Oran Harris, of White Pine; and several nieces and nephews.
The services were held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, at Mynatt’s Chapel in Knoxville with Rev. Gale Lyons and Rev. Robert E. Harris officiating. Interment was at 2 p.m. Wednesday, in Union Cemetery with Rev. Ransom Hall and Rev. Harris officiating. Military honors were provided by VFW Post #5266 Honor Guard.
The pallbearers were Jason Mynatt, Buddy Canupp, William Canupp, David Bowling, Steve Harris, and Keith Harris.
The honorary pallbearers were Fred Lee, Larry Fox, Lee Roy Cureton, Dave Carver, Roy D. Brown, Tunney Moore, Harold Cates, Alton Cureton, and Gary Ford.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Mynatt’s Chapel and 12 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Manes Funeral Home.

Virgil Warren Marion
Died: 09/09/1998
Virgil Warren Marion, 77, of Bryant, Ala., formerly of Concord, passed away Tuesday morning, September 1, at his home.
Virgil was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Bryant, Ala. Retired from Tennessee Carolina Trans-portation (TCT). A veteran of World War II, serving with the Navy. He was very active in the Ruritan Club in Bryant, Ala. and the Constructors for Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Garrett and Pearl Frye Marion; and brothers, Carson and Charles Marion.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Effie Ellison Marion; sons and daughters-in-law, Warren E. and Sherry Marion, of Whitwell, Dana C. and Cheryl Marion, Ernie L. Marion, Eddie Lee Marion, and Kennedy T. Marion, all of Bryant, Ala.; granddaughters, Katie and Rebecca Marion, of Bryant, Ala.; grandsons, Adam Marion, of Whitwell, and Andrew Edwards, of Flat Rock, Ala.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred and Goldie Marion, and Alex and Marie Marion, all of Concord; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, followed by funeral services at 7:30 p.m. in the Click Funeral Home Chapel.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, in Union Cemetery, in Farragut with Rev. Don Acton officiating.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Bryant, Ala., with Rev. Steve Townson officiating.

Diane Elizabeth Surrett, 41, of Cosby, passed away Saturday morning at her home following a lengthy illness.
Before her illness, she was a self-employed craftsman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Eunice Harbin, and a brother, Larry E. Harbin.
Survivors include her husband, Gary C. Surrett, of Cosby; one daughter, Catina Brown, of Hartford; step-children, Amy and her husband, Bill Smith, of Newport, Aleshia Surrett and her fiancé, Alan McClain, of Kingsport, and Amanda Surrett, of Newport; sister, Linda Gulley and her fiancé, Billy Bernard Blaine, of Blaine; brother, Dean “Piglet” Harbin, of Whitesburg; grandchildren, Devin Smith, of Newport, Chris and Brandy Smith, of Morristown, and Jessica, Matt, and Colt McClain, of Kingsport; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Brown Funeral Chapel with Rev. Nelson Harbin officiating. Interment was in the Coleman Cemetery in White Pine.

Patricia Ann Dukes, 26, of Cosby, passed away Friday, September 11.
She attended Basinger Chapel Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Jesse Dukes.
Survivors: parents, Albert and Leona W. Dukes of Cosby; sister, Christine Rogers of Rochester, New York; brothers, Jimmy Shifflet and Ronnie Shifflet, both of Rochester, New York, and Larry Shifflet of Palmyra, New York; grandmother, Geraldean Dukes of Corning, New York; and a very special niece, Leona Dukes of Cosby. Additional survivors include several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mr. James Timothy Doolittle, 38, of Bybee, died Tuesday, September 15, at his residence.
He was born in Aiken, South Carolina.
He was a self-employed truck driver and a member of Centerview Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Mack Doolittle.
Survivors: wife, Teresa Bell Doolittle; sons, Samuel Mack Doolittle, Newport, and James Dale Doolittle, Eustis, Florida; daughters, Timberly Dawn Doolittle, Eustis, Florida, and Amanda Jane Doolittle, Eustis, Florida; mother, Mary Waters Payne; brother, John Michael Doolittle, Wagener, South Carolina; and half-brother, Joseph Allen Payne, N. Augusta, South Carolina.

Diana Louise Ellison, 52, of Newport, passed away Thursday morning, September 17, at Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Everette Ellison.
Survivors include daughters, Christina Ellison of Bybee and Lillie Ellison of Newport; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Terra Ellison of Texas; parents, Don and Lola Feltner of Newport; sister, Bonnie, and husband, Keith Weatherman of Rileyville, Virginia; brothers, Donnie Feltner and Rodney and wife, Debbie Feltner, all of Manassas, Virginia, and Herby and wife, Faith Vanover of Arlington, Virginia; granddaughter, Samantha Ellison of Bybee; and grandson, Michael Ellison Jr. of Texas.

Charles William Ellison, age 59, of Del Rio, died Saturday morning in a Morristown hospital.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Fred R. and Bessie Ellison; brothers, Jay and George Ellison; and sisters, Wanda Winters, and Jetta Rosalee.
He is survived by his brother, Junior Ellison and L.D. Ellison, of Del Rio; brother and sister-in-law, R.C. and Sondra Ellison, of Coeburn, VA; sister, Irene Hartsell, of Del Rio; sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Edward Caldwell, of Del Rio; special niece and nephew, Dale and Tonya Ellison; and several other nieces and nephews.

Mr. Aubrey Fred Nease, 82, of Parrottsville, passed away Tuesday, September 15.
He was retired from American Enka; a retired dairy farmer; former director of Cocke County Soil Conservation District; former member of the Farm Bureau; and a former Farmer of the Year.
He was a member of Luther Memorial Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his son, Fred Norman Nease; one infant grandson; and was joined in death by his sister-in-law, Iva Turner.

Lloyd Park, 85, of Del Rio, died Wednesday, September 16, at Mariner Health after a lengthy illness.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Park, of Del Rio; sons, Alfred Parks of Broomfield, Colorado, Ivan Luther Parks of Parrottville, and Clyde Ray Parks and R.C. Parks, both of Newport; daughter, Lucille Shelton of Newport; stepson, John Copp of Los Angeles, California; stepdaughter, Kathryn McGowan of Greeneville; brother, Glen Bascomb Parks of Parrottsville; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; step-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Mr. Robert Junior Sisk, 55, of Mt. Holly, North Carolina, died Tuesday, September 15, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, North Carolina.
He was born in Cocke County and was a self-employed building contractor.
Mr. Sisk was the son of Robert R. Sisk Sr. and the late Lena Lucille Stuart Sisk. He was preceded in death by one brother, Lloyd N. Sisk.
Mr. Sisk is survived by his father, Robert Roy Sisk of Mt. Holly, North Carolina; three brothers, Charles E., David and Kenny Sisk, all of Mt. Holly, North Carolina; two sisters, Patricia Sisk of Mt. Holly, North Carolina, and Geraldine Collins of Gastonia, North Carolina; 12 nieces and nephews; and seven great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 18, at the Stanley Free Will Baptist Church in Stanley, North Carolina. Rev. Chuck Branch will officiate at the funeral service. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery, Mt. Holly, North Carolina.

Joshua Makio Roberts, the infant son of Teresa Marie Lyman of Sevierville and Billy Isaac Roberts of Newport, died Thursday, September 17, at Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center in Sevierville.
Joshua was preceded in death by his great-grandfathers, Frank Roberts and Fred Loftin.
Survivors: In addition to his parents, Joshua is survived by his brother, Cody Lee Roberts of Newport; grandparents, Billy and Evelyn Roberts of Newport and Ralph and Marie Loftin of Kings Mountain, North Carolina; great-grandparents, Ray and Louise Ball of Del Rio, Bernice Roberts of Hot Springs, North Carolina, and Emma Loftin of Kings Mountain, North Carolina; aunts, Tiffany Leann Roberts of Newport and Toni Loftin of Kings Mountain, North Carolina; and an uncle, T.J. Christopher Michael Acord, age 6 days old, of Newport, died Tuesday at the Vanderbilt Medical Center, Nashville.
He is survived by his parents, Kelly Acord and Michael Messer of Newport; grandparents, Betsy and Tommy Church of Newport, Ronnie Styles of Nenning, and Linda Turner and Ted Messer of Newport; great-grandparents, Bill and Bonnie Smallwood of Newport; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Sara Phillips Clark

Sara Phillips Clark, 68, of Beecarter Rd., Dandridge (Swannsylvania Community), passed away Sunday evening, September 20, at her home following a long illness.
She was a member of the Swannsylvania Baptist Church and was a retired employee and office manager of the Stokely-Van Camp and Quaker Oats Co. after 43 years of service.
She was the daughter of the late Alfred and Gypsie Carter Phillips.
Survivors: husband, William E. "Sonny" Clark; son, William Shannon Clark, both of Dandridge; and special friends, Layman and Hazel Templeton, Clarence and Farrie Black, James Hugh and June Hunter, and her Swannsylvania Baptist Church family.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers that memorial gifts be sent to the Swannsylvania Baptist Church, 921 Swannsylvania Rd., Dandridge, TN 37725, in memory of Sara.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 23, at 2 p.m., at the Swannsylvania Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Hensley and Dr. Robert McCray officiating. Interment graveside service to follow in Hillcrest Cemetery.
The body was moved to the church Tuesday at 2 p.m. to lie in state and where friends may call until time of service.

Lawrence Elmer Parton, 59, of Del Rio, passed away Wednesday morning at the Baptist Hospital of Cocke County following a lengthy illness.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bartley Parton; and a brother, Billy Jack Parton.
He is survived by his children, Jess and his wife, Janice Parton of Parrottsville, David and his wife, Tammy Parton of Greeneville, and Marcelle Keller of Del Rio; mother, Mary Parton of Del Rio; sisters, Reva Dean Parton, Janice Pierce, and Rebecca Parton, all of Del Rio, Pauline McClure of Wellford, South Carolina, and Lucille Woody and Bobbie Ann Rathbone, both of Newport; brothers, Y.J. and his wife, Patsy Parton of Hot Springs, North Carolina, and Jr. Wallace and his wife, Linda Parton of Del Rio; grandchildren, James Keller of Del Rio and Dakota Parton of Greeneville; and special friends, Betsy, Lisa and M.L.
The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at the home of his twin sister, Lucille Woody, at 123 Douglas Avenue in Newport, where the family received friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday evening. Rev. Wayne Haney will be officiating. Interment will be in the Jonestown Cemetery.

Beulah Della Shults
Died: 09/25/1998
Beulah Della Shults, 75, of Cosby, has gone home to be with her beloved husband, Eulas J. Shults, who preceded her in death. She passed away Friday.
She was also preceded in death by six children; six grandchildren; her parents, Alex Ramsey and Zola Williamson Ramsey; brother, Glade Ramsey; and sister, Edna Mae Green.
She was a member of Garvers Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
She is survived by five children, Lester Shults of Sevierville, and Ona Naillion, Judy McGaha, Pat McClain, and Rillie Jenkins, all of Cosby; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by a brother, Ralph Ramsey, of Sevierville; sister, Elene Ailey of Olin, North Carolina, Eula Dockery of Newport, Pauline Manning and Stella Lewis of Chestnut Hill; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Manes Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gary Henderson and Rev. Phillip Hall officiating. Burial will be in the Shults Cemetery, Cosby.

Elizabeth Carol Dykes
Died: 09/28/1998
Elizabeth Carol Dykes was born on May 30, 1930. She departed this life at 5:35 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, 1998 at Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee in Knoxville after an extended illness following heart surgery.
Elizabeth was born and raised in Newport, where she attended and graduated from Tanner School. Upon graduation from high school she enrolled at Morristown College.
In September 1995 she retired from Hunts Foods, formerly Stokely Van Camp, Inc. and Quaker Oats, after 30 years of service.
She was a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church where she was an usher and enjoyed singing in the choir.
Elizabeth married Roland Dykes, Jr. on April 8, 1951. This union produced seven children. All those who knew Elizabeth, knew she lived for and loved her children dearly. She was a dedicated, loving, caring, and supportive mom and wife. When not spending time with her family or friends, she enjoyed traveling with her husband to various cities and states.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her dedicated and loving husband, Roland Dykes, Jr; seven children, Roland, III, of Talbott, Stephanie Stewart, of Newport, Gary Alan, of Newport, Kathy Sims, of Knoxville, Vivian Reed, of San Antonio, TX, Maurice “Dion,” of Newport, Eric Scott “Scotty,” of Knoxville, and one step-son, Terry Stewart, of Newport; four daughters-in-law, Rhonda, Carla, Mary Lynn, and Stacey; three sons-in-law, Don Stewart, John Sims, and Mark Reed; thirteen grandchildren, Terra, Brian, Terrence, Mickey, Trey, Chasity, Damian, Garren Tyler (G.T.), Kristina, Evan, Chelsey, Dion, and Zephanie; mother and father, Virgil and Maudella Dirl, of Newport; one sister, Betty Jean Robinson, of Newport; six sisters-in-law, Essie Barton, Nettie Sue Swagerty, and Bernice Banks, all of Newport, Mamie Ray Julian, of Chattanooga, Marian Berry, of Springfield, MA, and Della Saunders, of Indianapolis, IN; special aunt and uncle; Lousie Davidson, of Newport, and John Swagerty, of Florida; and a host of special nieces, nephews, and friends.

J.T. (Humpy) Quinton, age 90, of Newport, passed away Sunday, September 27, at the home of his daughter, Jinny.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tyler and Ida Bell Quinton and his wife, Mary Edith Busler Quinton.

William Arnold Davis, age 66, of Newport, died Monday, at Baptist Hospital of Cocke County.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Martha Davis of the home; brother and sister-in-law, George and Judy Cureton, of Parrottsville; nieces, Charlene Price, of Newport, Joy Cureton, of Cosby, Georgia Ann Ball, of Newport, and Nancy Sue Cureton, of Parrottsville; nephews, Jason Cureton, of Parrottsville and Roger Cureton, of Newport; special niece, Lisa Carver, of Rankin Hill; special nephew, Jamie Carver, of Bybee; great-nieces, Jennifer Lynn Cureton, of Newport, Tabbatha Carver, Ocean Carver, and Billie Lynn Hall, all of Rankin Hill; and special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James and Myrtle Carver, of Rankin Hill.

Benton Davis, 93, of Parrottsville, passed away Wednesday morning, September 30, in Cosby, at the home of his daughter, Bobbie Garver.
Benton attended Forrest Hill Baptist Church in Parrottsville.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Gladys Thomas.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Bobbie and Fred Garver, of Cosby; sisters, Pauline Street, of Johnson City, Ruby and her husband, Leroy Cobble, of Morristown; sisters-in-law, Margaret Davis, of Bybee and Mary Kate Davis, of Morristown; brother, Fred and his wife, Virginia Davis, of Talbott; brothers-in-law, Albert Thomas, of Parrottsville, and Dewey and his wife, Evalena Thomas, of Bybee; grandson, Mark and his wife, Jacki Garver, of Cosby; great-grandchildren, Bruce Garver, of Pigeon Forge, and Allie Garver and Eric Garver, of Cosby.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. Friday, October 2, at the Brown Funeral Chapel with Rev. Robert Walker and Rev. Jim Dampier officiating. Interment was in the Glendale Methodist Church Cemetery.
The nephews served as pallbearers.
The family received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday evening at Brown Funeral Home.
