Dorothy Hawkins, 78, of Newport, died Thursday, October 21, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. 
She was a member of the First Christian Church. 
She was preceded in death by her son, Petie Holt. 
She is survived by son, Buddy Hawkins of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Kay Edmonds of Greenville, South Carolina; daughters and sons-in-law, Dottie and Fred McGaha of Hampton, Georgia, and Kathy and Thacher Emory of Hampton, Georgia; sister, Doris Webb of Newport; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. 
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Manes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ed Hardison officiating, with burial in Union Cemetery. 
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Manes Funeral Home.

Agnes Lauretta Huff 
Died: 10/21/1999
Agnes Lauretta Huff, 59, of Newport, passed away Thursday morning, October 21, following a lengthy illness. 
She was a member of French Broad Baptist Church. 
She was previously employed as a waitress at the Mountain View Truckstop. 
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Sr. and Dorothy Huff; and a brother, Johnny Ray Huff. 
Agnes is survived by her children, Gayla Ottinger Hefner, and husband, Richard, of Newport, and Richard Huff of Parrottsville; one sister, Ruby Diebels of Odessa, Texas; brothers, Harold Huff and wife, Jo, and Fred Huff Jr. and wife, Zura, of Parrottsville; and grandchildren, Derek Lynn Hefner and Lucas Keenan Hefner, both of Newport, and Kevin Scott Huff of Cosby. 
Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Chapel with Rev. Bill Murr officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. 
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday evening at Brown Funeral Home.

Keepy Ellison 
Died: 10/22/1999
Keppy Ellison, age 80, of Greeneville, died Friday, October 22, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Medical Center. 
He was a member of Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church in Newport. 
Mr. Ellison was a veteran of World War II serving under General George Patton in France where he was wounded and received the purple heart and the bronze star. 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Ellison; parents, W.I. and Rhoda James Ellison; brother, Joe Ray Ellison; sisters, Wilma Whitmire, Gladys Keys, Audrey Dockery, Eunice Butcher, and Elsie Johnson. 
Survivors: one son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Shelia Ellison, of Greeneville; two grandchildren, Christy Ellison and Courtney Ellison, both of Greeneville; one sister, Della Lunsford, of Newport; one brother, Eulas Ellison, of Highpoint; and several nieces and nephews. 
The funeral will be Monday, October 25, at 2 p.m. at Jeffers Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Marvin Witt officiating. Interment will be in Greenelawn Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers are the nephews. 
The family will receive friends Sunday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Jeffers Mortuary.

Jean Mitchell Hooper 
Died: 10/25/1999
Ms. Jean Mitchell Hooper, 91, of Parrottsville, passed away Monday, October 25, at a local health care system. 
Ms. Hooper was a long-time resident of Parrottsville and was a member of the Long Creek Christian Church of Parrottsville for many years. 
Ms. Hooper was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hooper. 
Survivors include her son, Jon E. Hooper of Ringgold, Georgia; and two grandchildren, Rob and Chris Hooper of Ringgold, Georgia. 
The family will have private services for Ms. Hooper.

Sarah Williams McKinney 
Died: 10/27/1999
Sarah Catherine Williams McKinney, 90, of Newport, passed away Tuesday morning at the Baptist Hospital of Cocke County after a lengthy illness. 
She was of the Baptist faith. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Burnett McKinney; daughters, Lucille Dini and Joyce Beckett; three infant daughters and one infant son; and also three sisters and eight brothers. 
She is survived by daughters, Colleen Hurst of Kingston, Gladys Lynch of Luttrell, Roberta Helton of Newport, and Lois Frady of Knoxville; one son, Dwynn McKinney of Newport; sisters, Ethel Wilds of Newport and Mamie Davenport of Sandusky, Ohio; 21 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. 
Funeral service will be 8 p.m. Friday at the Brown Funeral Chapel with Dr. Byron Chambers officiating. Interment will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Resthaven Cemetery. 
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday prior to the service.

Nina Smith Sisk 
Died: 10/27/1999
Nina Smith Sisk, 79, of Newport, passed away Saturday morning at her home following a lengthy illness. 
She was a faithful member of the English Creek Baptist Church, where she had served as church organist for many years. 
She was a nurse at Laughlin Hospital in Greeneville, prior to her retirement in 1984. 
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dan Smith; daughter, Joyce Smith; son, Don Smith; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Hagaman; and brothers, J.R., Ray and C.D. Hagaman. 
Nina is survived by her husband, Paul Sisk, of Newport; daughter, Sandra Proctor, and her husband, Mark, of Berryville, Arkansas; granddaughter, Shannon Proctor Ricker of Greeneville; great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Stephen and Jordan Ricker of Greeneville; sister, Amy Jenell Jordan of Nashville; brothers, Wayne Hagaman and his wife, Dorothy, of Strawberry Plains, and Carl Hagaman and his wife, Pearl, of Waterford, Michigan; and stepdaughters, Barbara Freshour of Newport, and Ann Stapp and her husband, Oscar, of Covington, Georgia. 
The funeral was 8 p.m. Monday at the Brown Funeral Chapel with Rev. Stephen Smith officiating. 
The family received friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday prior to the service. 
Graveside service was at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Resthaven Memorial Garden.

Wanda Atchley Swanger, 66, of Newport, died Monday, October 25. 
She was a devoted wife and mother. 
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Joseph and Ethel Atchley. 
Survivors: husband, David E. Swanger; daughters and son-in-law, Vickie Swanger and Sharon and Rev. Johnny Hill; son, David Swanger; grandchildren, Zachary Hill; brother, J.B. Atchley of Maryville; and niece, Sue Lindsey. 
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the East Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Ball officiating. Interment will follow in Cummings Chapel Cemetery.

Buford Dwight Taylor 
Died: 10/27/1999
Buford Dwight Taylor, 62, of 3239 Melody Lane, White Pine, passed away at his home on Saturday, October 23, after suffering a heart attack. 
He was a former employee of the Kroehler Manufacturing Co. and Bayliner Corp. 
He was a son of the late William and Clara Lane Taylor. He was also preceded in death by brother and sisters, Harold Taylor, Agnes Arrington, Joyce Hance, and Lillian Hannon. 
Survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Serita and Dwayne Campbell, Stephanie and Barry Carter and Shannon and Tracey Taylor, all of White Pine; grandsons, Ryan Taylor and Rhett Campbell; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Billy Carl Arrington and Peggy and Bud Carver, all of Newport; brother and sister-in-law, Willard and Mary Taylor of Newport; half-brother, Bill Lane of Knoxville; former wife, Doris Taylor of White Pine; and several other friends and relatives. 
Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Sunday, October 24, at Farrar’s White Pine Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Richey officiating. Interment was Monday in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. 
The family received friends at the funeral home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday prior to services. 
The family will be at the home of Doris Taylor on Christopher Lane in White Pine.

Eugene Dunn 
Died: 11/10/1999
Eugene Dunn, 65, of Parrottsville, passed away suddenly Saturday evening at his home following an apparent heart attack. 
He was a member of the English Creek Baptist Church. 
Eugene had retired from the U.S. Air Force after serving in the Korean War. 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Susie Dunn; and a sister, Fairy Dunn. 
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Ella Mae Bryant Dunn of Parrottsville; children, Bobby Dunn and his wife, Donna, and Denny Dunn and his wife, Lorran, all of Newport; sister, Margaret Williams of Cosby; brothers, Rev. Paul Mayfield and his wife, Ruby, of Burlington, North Carolina, Bill Dunn and his wife, Margaret of Newport, and Cecil Dunn and his wife, Bonnie of Cosby; grandchildren, Toby, Dustin, Mary Beth and Andy, all of Newport; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. 
Funeral service was 8 p.m. Monday at the Brown Funeral Chapel with Rev. Stephen Smith and Rev. M.L. White officiating. The family received friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. prior to the service. 
Interment was 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Brooks Cemetery with military rites provided by the Lance Corporal Charles C. Roberts Chapter #102 of the D.A.V.

Mary Edna Easterly 
Died: 11/10/1999
Mary Edna Easterly, 77, of Marcella Drive, Mosheim, formerly of the Caney Branch Community, died Sunday, November 7, at Life Care Center of Greeneville. 
She was a homemaker and attended St. James Lutheran Church. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eldon Easterly; her parents, Oscar and Cora Wills Sane; one daughter, Mary Juanita Easterly; two sons, Leonard Easterly and Archie Easterly; and two brothers, Grady Wills and Ottis Sane. 
Survivors: three sons and daughters-in-law, Stanley and Linda Easterly of Mosheim, Dayton and Brenda Easterly of Greeneville, and Denver and Vestanna Easterly of Mosheim; six grandchildren, Alesha Randolph, Angel Easterly, Sandra Meade, Dayton Easterly, Michael Easterly, and Billy Easterly; two special great-grandchildren, Laci Randolph and Christopher Church; one sister, Marie Ayers of the St. James Community; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family members. 
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 10, at Kiser Funeral Chapel with Rev. Gary Gass officiating. Interment will be in the St. James Lutheran Cemetery. 
Pallbearers will be family and friends. 
The body is at Kiser Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Elsie Hamilton 
Died: 11/10/1999
Elsie Hamilton, 76, of Newport, passed away Friday, November 5, at Baptist Hospital of Cocke County. 
Elsie was a retired business woman, and was a Presbyterian by faith. 
She was the daughter of Gray and Myrtle (Lovell) Hurley. 
Elsie was preceeded in death by her husband of 53 years, Marshall Hamilton, who passed away in April. 
She is survived by two sisters, Taunzella Ryan, of Concord, North Carolina, and Nile Lindsey, of Newport; four children, Donald, Timothy, James, and Pam; seven grandchildren, and four great grand children; and several nieces and nephews. 
Elsie Louise (Hurley) Hamilton leaves us to join her “Maker.” 
A void that can never be filled is left in our hearts and our lives forever. Our strength will come from God. We were all so fortunate to have had her for a little while. She taught us love, self-respect, generosity, and to look for the good in the hearts of others. She was our little bit of Heaven here on Earth. 
Praise be to God for you. Your love and goodness lives on. Don, Linda, Kim, Robby, Kaleb, Kaylee, Tim, Cindy Whitney, Jim, Matt, Brad, Jimmy, Pam, Lance, Marsha, Kirsten, and Jasmine.

Died: 11/10/1999
Hattie Lee Loveday, 42, of Newport, died suddenly Sunday afternoon at her home in Newport. 
She was preceded in death by her grandson, Derek Thomas. 
She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Shay Thomas of Maryville; brother, Andy Loveday of Newport; sister, Mary Loveday of Virginia; and granddaughter, Kaitlyn Thomas of Maryville. 
Family and friends will meet at Open Door Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 10, for an 11 a.m. graveside service. Rev. Tommy Russell will officiate.

James Lewis Mitchell 
Died: 11/10/1999
James Lewis Mitchell, 72, passed away Friday, November 5, at the Veterans Hospital in Johnson City. 
James was a veteran of WWII, a member of D.A.V. Post 102, a 32nd degree Mason, and a member of Harmony Lodge Number 17. 
He was retired from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, where he was employed as a chemist. 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray V. and Daisy (Baughner) Mitchell; and a sister, Phyllis Edmonds. 
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Diane L. Mitchell, of Hartford; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sally and Rob Jennings, of Birmingham, Alabama, MonaJane and David Lippitt, of Dacula, Georgia, and Jenalee and Chuck Thompson, of Marietta, Georgia; one son and daughter-in-law, Ray K. and Cindy Mitchell, of Lawrenceville, Georgia; one sister, Daisy Gilmore, of Port Arthur, Texas; one brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Ann Mitchell, of Neederland, Texas; two brothers-in-law, William Edmonds, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Kirk and wife Marge Lang, of Norwich, Connecticut; ten grandchildren, Lindsay, Leslie, Ally, and RJ Jennings, Tim and Kyleen Mitchell, Katie and Addy Lippitt, and Charles and Sara Thompson; and several nieces and nephews. 
The family received friends Saturday, November 6, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home. 
The funeral service was held Sunday, November 7, at the Newport Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Yale Gunn and Warren Mounts officiating. 
Burial was at Union Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by D.A.V. Post 102, L’CPL. Charles C. Roberts in charge. 
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to D.A.V. Post 102, or the Newport Presbyterian Church.

Hazel Franklin Partin, 77, passed away Monday evening at Laughlin Memorial Hospital in Greeneville.

Dixie H. White, 71, of Newport, passed away early Sunday morning at her home following a lengthy illness. 
She was a member of the Point Pleasant Baptist Church. 
Survivors include her husband, Sam White, of Newport; her children, Sheila Henry and her husband, Ronald, Judean Atkins, and Kimmie White and his wife, Nancy, all of Newport; sister, Urah Brady of White Pine; grandchildren, Chad Henry, Jeremiah White, Michael Atkins, and Kalym White and his wife, Annie, all of Newport; and several nieces and nephews; and many friends. 
Funeral service will be 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Brown Funeral Chapel with Rev. Del Robertson and Rev. Joe Haase officiating. The family received friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday evening and will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening prior to the service.

Eva Lee Whitten, 82, of Newport, died at her home on Monday, November 8. 
She attended Ravens Branch Church of Christ. 
She owned and operated Whitten Grocery for over 25 years. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Whitten; brothers, Olenas and Roe Taffer; and sister, Hazel McMahan. 
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, McRee and Diana Whitten of Newport; daughter, Shirley Smith of Newport; brother, J.C. Taffer of Gatlinburg; sisters, Freda Leatherwood of Hartford, Effie Frazier of Newport, and Bernita Barton of Greer, South Carolina; 13 grandchildren, Jackie McGaha, Terry Whitten, Tony Whitten, Tracy Whitten, and Ryan Smith, all of Newport, Ricky Smith of St. Louis, Missouri, Pam Whitten, Tammy Whitten, Lisa Whitten, and Eva Eschelbacher, all of Newport, Eugene Bernard of White Pine, Cindy Norton of Newport, and Tim Goben of LaGrange, Kentucky; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles A. Cobble Sr., of Parrottsville, an active member of Salem Lutheran Church, died Friday, November 12, at the age of 88. 
He was a charter member of the Parrottsville Ruritan Club and president of Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company. 
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Helen; three children, Susan Sechrist of Charlotte, North Carolina, Charles Cobble Jr. of Parrottsville, and Mary Anne Parker of Greenville, South Carolina; one brother, Bill Cobble of Greene County; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. 
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, November 13, at Costner-Maloy Funeral Home. 
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 14, at Salem Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Burl P. Lewis 
Died: 11/12/1999
Burl P. Lewis, 83, of Knoxville, passed away November 9 at St. Mary’s Medical Center. 
He attended 2nd United Methodist Church and was retired from Life of Georgia Insurance Company. 
He was honored in the 1997 Cocke County Bicentennial Celebration as one of the five survivors of the 1934 CCHS football tragedy. He received life-threatening injuries from the wreck in which two were killed and several injured when the truck carrying the entire CCHS football team overturned on Stickleyville Mountain near Pennington Gap. 
He is survived by his wife, Mabel K. Lewis; son and daughter-in-law, Bud and Mary Lou Lewis of Knoxville; daughter, Sandra Lewis Gardner of Knoxville; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Gene Branam of Newport; grandchildren, Andy and Amanda Lewis and Brittney and Jeff Wilson, all of Knoxville, and David Branam and Lisa Marie Branam of Newport; brothers, R.W. (Woody) Lewis and James Lewis, both of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews. 
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Rose Mortuary, Broadway Chapel, with Rev. Charles Lawson officiating, with interment to follow in Highland Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Andy Lewis, Justin Pratt, Derek Pratt, Jeff Wilson, David Branam, Rob Wilson, and Jerry Lankford.

He was an employee of Ace Products. 
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Frank McGaha; grandmother, Arbalee Johnson; and grandfather, Walter Doc Johnson. 
He is survived by his wife, Thelma Banks McGaha of Newport; father, Lacy McGaha of Hartford; mother, Marilyn McGaha of Newport; grandmother, Dora McGaha of Hartford; brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Jody McGaha of Hartford; half-sister, Tracy Hall of Grassy Fork; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

He was a retired farmer. 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Laney Fish; his son, Gordon Fish; sister, Bernice Sprouse; and brother, Ray Fish. 
He is survived by his sons, Walter Fish of Newport, Larry Fish of Newport, and Jimmy Fish of Newport; his daughters and sons-in-law, Helen and Dennis Samples of Bybee, and Peggy and Edward Williams of Newport; sisters, Bonnie Whittle of Hartford, Ruby Whittle of Parrottsville, Agnes Messer of Johathan Creek, North Carolina, Fairy Smith of Newport, and Reva Shepherd of Parrottsville; brothers, Leroy Fish of Cosby, Gene Fish of Cosby, Frank Fish of Bridgeton, New Jersey, and Joe Fish of Cosby; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. 
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Brown Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike Hensley officiating. Interment will be at Cothran Cemetery. 
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at Brown Funeral Home.

Walter Lee O’Neil 
Died: 11/16/1999
Walter Lee O’Neil, 64, of Bybee, beloved husband of Mollie (Lovell) O’Neil, entered into eternal rest suddenly Tuesday morning. 
He was employed by Eastern Plating, Inc. and would have retired next year. 
Besides his wife, he is survived by his parents, Jake and Rosetta O’Neil of Newport; children, Kathy Whaley and Pat O’Neil of Newport; sisters and brothers-in-law, Christine and Festus Talley of Newport and Mary and Royce Lance of Leicester, North Carolina; four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Nancy and John Speake; and a host of friends. 
Pallbearers are Cleve Benson, Jamie Valentine, Robert Hall, Phillip Ottinger, Russell Rathbone, and David Nelson. Honorary pallbearers are Mike Mullaney, Kevin Mullaney, Tom McNeely, Jim Holt, Rob Nabors, Bobby Conard, Todd Wilder, William Benson, Robert Arms, Robert Whitted, Bobby Fisher, and Tom Gibson. 
Walter will be ready for viewing Friday, November 19, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Manes Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 8 p.m. at Manes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Junior Loveday and Rev. Dale Hayes officiating. 
Graveside military service with Lance Corporal Charles Roberts D.A.V. Chapter #102 will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 20, at Stokely Chapel Cemetery.

Joyce Ann Gregg Poindexter, 55, of Mount Holly, North Carolina, died November 4 at home. 
She was a native of Newport; daughter of the late Clell and Ethel McCoig Gregg; wife of the late James Robert Poindexter and Jimmy Eugene Martin; and member of The Light House Full Gospel Ministries. 
Survivors: daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Ralph King, Gastonia, North Carolina, Kim and Rick Morgan, Kings Mountain, North Carolina, and Cindy and Jerry Messer and Pam and Bobby Maltba, Mount Holly, North Carolina; sisters, Wanda Finger, Maiden, North Carolina, Betty Allen, Mount Holly, North Carolina, Jearline Saunders, Concord, North Carolina, and Savannah Cameron, White Pine; brother, Donald Gregg, Mount Holly, North Carolina; and 10 grandchildren. 
The funeral was 2 p.m. Saturday, November 6, at Carothers Funeral Home, Mount Holly, North Carolina, with Rev. Herman Winkler officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery.

Dora Dean Phillips Hall, 61, of Cosby, passed away Friday, November 19, at Johnson City Medical Center. 
She was a homemaker and a member of Caney Creek Baptist Church. 
She was preceded in death by parents, Omer and Zella Phillips; and sons, Terry William Hall and Jeffrey Lynn Hall. 
Survivors: husband, Jack Hall of the home; children, Danny Phillips, Ricky David Hall, and Larry Dean Hall, all of Cosby, and Jackie Darrell Hall of Newport; sisters, Ruby Hall and Kathleen O’Dell, both of Newport; brothers, Ronald Phillips and Clemon Phillips, both of Cosby; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. 
The family received friends from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday, November 21, at Costner-Maloy Funeral Home. 
The funeral was 2 p.m. Monday, November 22, at Costner-Maloy Funeral Chapel with Rev. Billy Ball and Rev. Junior Gorrell officiating. Interment was in the Hall Cemetery.
