Elmer Guy Martin, age 79, of Newport, died at his home Tuesday, March 16, 1999.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Martin and two daughters, Virginia Gorrell and Stella Byrd.
He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Anna Ruth and Jim Allen, Edna and Leroy Webb, and Debbie and Jerry Hall, all of Newport, and Cassie and Bill Willet, of Morristown; daughter, Johnnie Gunter, of Newport; sons and daughters-in-law, Donnie and Sharon Martin, of Richmond, VA and Cecil and Teresa Martin, of Newport; sister, Hulda Chapman, of Newport; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and many special friends.
The funeral will be 8 p.m. Wednesday night at Manes Funeral Chapel with Rev. Wayne Dalton and Rev. Gary Gass officiating. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Union Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday prior to the funeral at Manes Funeral Home.

John Raines, of Newport, born May 10, 1938, died at his home March 16, 1999.
He was of the Baptist Faith. He made his living as a farmer.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Mack Odis Raines.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Faye Raines, of the home; son, John Raines Jr., of Newport; daughter, Anna Ruth Raines, of Newport; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Wayne Shelton, of Parrottsville; step sons and stepdaughters-in-law, Russell and Kay Rolen, of Newport, Michael and Gloria Dunn, of Newport; stepson, David Dunn, of Newport; stepdaughter and her husband, Maggie and Bruce Crumbley, of Bybee; sister, Margaret Allender, of Knoxville; half-brother, Larry Raines, of South Carolina; 6 grandchildren; 2 stepgrandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Jay and Hazel Keller, Walter and Shiela Keasling, and Robert and Joyce Sutton, all of Newport.

Tessie Eula Black
Died: 03/19/1999
Tessie Eula Black, 100, of Hartford, passed away Wednesday at the Baptist Hospital of Cocke County.
Tessie was a member of the Ravenís Branch Church of Christ.
She had farmed most all her adult life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Black; son, Frank Black; parents, David and Mary Rogers Allison; grandson, Lloyd James; brother, Grover Allison; and sister, Barbara Duncan.
She is survived by her daughters, Roxie James, of Hartford and Hazel Roberts and her husband, Floyd, of Marietta, S.C.; grandchildren, Frank, Boyd, Jessie, Arnold, and Carolyn James, all of Hartford; several stepgrandchildren; great-grandchildren, Amanda and Jonathan James, both of Newport and Terri Cansler, of Hartford; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday evening at Brown Funeral Home.
The funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Brown Funeral Chapel with Wilson Messer officiating. Interment at the James Family Cemetery.

William Walter Grindstaff
Died: 03/21/1999
William Walter Grindstaff, 81, of Cosby, passed away Sunday at the Mariner Health Care Center.
He was a WWII veteran.
He was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Grassy Fork.
Walter was a retired farmer and retired from the Tennessee Highway Dept. in 1982.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Minnie Landereth Grindstaff; sisters, Lillie Grindstaff and Lucille Hunter; and brothers, Edward and Earl Grindstaff.
He is survived by his wife, Cora Mae Ford Grindstaff of Cosby; children, Earl and daughter-in-law, Gay Phillips Grindstaff of Cosby, Barbara and son-in-law, Chuck Quintard of Atlanta, Georgia, John M. and daughter-in-law, Evelyn Grindstaff of Newport, and Karen and son-in-law, Johnny Messer of Newport; sister, Flora Barnhardt of Newport News, Virginia; grandchildren, Leonard, Earl, John, and Katrina Grindstaff, Melissa Ball and Ashley and Daniel Messer; and great-grandchildren, Kala, Leonard, and Ronnie Grindstaff and Dylan and Dakota Ball.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Brown Funeral Chapel with Rev. Ransom Hall and Rev. Byron Chambers officiating.

Juanita Thomas Allen
Died: 03/24/1999
Juanita Thomas Allen, born May 11, 1903, departed this life on March 21, 1999 at the Mariner Health Care.
Juanita was the last patriot of the older Thomas family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hurbert Allen; son, McNary Thomas; mother, Callie Thomas; father, George Thomas; brothers, Roy, Percy, Burn, Fred, and Andrew; sisters, Ada Thomas, Hattie Wilherson, Fannie Thomas, and Myrtle Allen; and special friends, Mr. and Mrs. Horace Burnett.
Juanita was a faithful and devoted member of Russellís Chapel. She then devoted her spiritual service to New Zion AME Zion Church until her illness caused her to be absent. She was a member of the Deaconses Board, Sunday school, missionary society, and community chorus.
After the death of her sister, Fannie she raised her two twin sons, Wendell and McNary Thomas. Her nurturing continued even after McNary died at the age of 21.
She leaves to morn her death a son, Wendell Thomas, of Swannsylvania; granddaughters, Rachel Thomas, of Swannsylvania and Iva Thomas, of Atlanta, GA; sister-in-law, Bessie Thomas, of Newport and Myrtle Thomas, of Harriman, TN; special friends, Edith Wells Grimes, of Jasper, GA and Jimmy Burnett, of Newport, TN; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. The funeral will be 8 p.m. Wednesday at Manes Funeral Home Chapel with burial 11 a.m. Thursday at Old Town Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. prior to the funeral service at Manes Funeral Home.

John Wesley Dalton, 94, passed away Saturday evening at the Baptist Hospital of Cocke County following a short illness.
He faithfully attended the West End Tabernacle. John had worked at Stokely Van Camp for 33 years before his retirement in 1969.
John was preceded in death by his sons, John Ray and Aubrey Dale Dalton and son-in-law, Arlie Fine.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Martha Elouise Wiley Dalton, of Newport; children, Hubert Dalton and his wife, Carolyn, Charles Dalton, Janie and her husband, Elmo Kelley, Sue Fine, Margaret and her husband, Arvin Keyes, Gail Howard, Denese and her husband, Orville Henderson, and Sandy Van Dyke, all of Newport, Martha and her husband, Hugh Campbell, of Chucky, and Tricia and her husband, Alan McCoy, of Johnson City; brother, Charles Earl Dalton and his wife, Sarah, of Cosby; 24 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a special friend, Sylvia Click, of Newport; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

"Mamaw Hattie" Cline Lillard, age 86, went to be with the Lord, Monday, March 22, 1999.
She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, James Lillard; her parents, Leonard and Cordelia Cline; her son, Fred Cline, Jr.; and two sisters, Lucy Brockwell and Georgia Overholt.
She is survived by her daughter, Janette Huskey, of Ocala, Florida; grandsons and their spouses, Tony and Carolyn Cline, of Newport and Rick and Barbara Kyker, of Sevierville; grandsons, Lloyd Cline and Ronald "RV" Cline, both of Newport; granddaughters, Donna Huskey, of Tampa Florida, Opal Huskey, of Knoxville, and Gayla Bailey, of Pennsylvania; loving great-grandchildren and their spouses, Steve and Angie (Cline) Crum, Todd and Marcee Cline, Ricky Kyker, Brandy Kyker, Barry Kyker, Kyle Cline, Jeffery Cline, Eric Baxter, Jason Miller, and Brandy Miller; four great-great-grand "babies" Whitney and Hunter Crum and Storm and Torie Kyker; and one sister, Lola Hill, of Newport.

Andrew Messer, 87, of Newport, passed away Saturday at the Bristol Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
He was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church. Andrew was a veteran of WWII and was a very active member of LCPL Charles C. Roberts D.A.V. Chapter 102 before his illness. He had retired from Wheaton Glass.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Ada Mae Huff Messer. He is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Huff, Mr. and Mrs. Turner Huff, Marjorie Rolen, and Annie Huff, all of Newport; special nephew, Paul Bryant, of Newport; great nephew, Bobby Huff, of Newport; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Sunday at 8 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Chapel with Rev. Joe Bible officiating.

He was an avid flea market enthusiast.

Aubrey Lewis Maynard, 51, of Newport, died suddenly Friday afternoon.
He was a member of the West End Baptist Church and of Newport Masonic Lodge #234 and Scottish Rite Temple, Knoxville.
He was employed by Charles Blalock and Sons Construction Co.
He was preceded in death by grandparents, W.F. and Edna Maynard, Scottsville, Kentucky, and Noel and Mary Sullivan, Stockton, California.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Maynard of Newport; daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Bill Ogle of Newport; sons and daughters-in-law, Matthew and Stephanie Maynard of Newport and Mark and Rhonda Maynard of Morristown; grandchildren, Billie Ellen Ogle of Newport and Aubrey Pate Maynard and Jeremiah Buff of Morristown; parents, Thomas Aubrey Maynard of Scottsville, Kentucky, and Velma Louise Maynard of Los Angeles, California; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Lou and Steve Bradley of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Renie and Cecil Hewett of Scottsville, Kentucky; and also several nieces and nephews.

Rev. Frank T. Pierce, 78, of Del Rio, went to be with the Lord on March 26, 1999, at his home following a lengthy illness.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Laura Pierce.
He is survived by his wife, Nora Pierce, of Del Rio; sons and daughters-in-law, Orville and Judy Pierce of Del Rio and Michael and Dena Pierce of Lincolnton, North Carolina; daughters and son-in-law, Ann, Frankie and Retta Pierce and Vickie and Glen Shelton, all of Del Rio; grandchildren, Sarah, Cale and April Worley, Scottie and Byron Pierce, Brittany Brown, Randi Kelly and Robbie Pierce; great-grandchildren, Justin and Megan Shelton and Dylan Pierce; also one brother, J.D. Zora Dyer Roberts
Died: 03/29/1999
Zora (Ellison) Dyer Roberts was born into this world on July 22, 1916.
She was born and raised in Cocke County in the community of Hartford.
She was the first-born child of the union to the late John Anderson Ellison and Ada (Rolen) Ellison.
She went home to be with Jesus on March 28, 1999.
She was of "The Church of God Faith."
Zora was united in marriage to James Harold Dyer. From this union, she was blessed with three children: James Harold Dyer II; Joyce Ilone (Dyer) Turner; and Claria Jane (Dyer) Gilbert. She lost Mr. Dyer to cancer.
Later, Zora was united in marriage to Bert Roberts. This union was blessed with four children: Ada (Roberts) Lunsford; Zora (Roberts) Robinson; the late infant son, Billy John Roberts; and Juanita (Roberts) Brown. She also lost Mr. Roberts to cancer.
Zora was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; her infant son; one brother, Mr. Lewis Ellison; and three sons-in-laws, Burnett Turner, William Gilbert, and Robert W. Lunsford I.
Zora leaves to celebrate her homegoing and memories to her six children; seven sisters; three brothers; two sons-in-laws, Freddie Robinson and Roy Brown; one daughter-in-law, Patricia (Hembree) Dyer; 16 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; and other loving and devoted relatives.
"Sleep on Mother and take your rest. We love you, but God loves you best."
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Brown Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tois Seay officiating. Burial will be in the Mulberry Gap Cemetery.

He is survived by his brothers, James Hal Phillips of Cosby; sisters, Fern McFalls of Cosby, Allene Messer of Cosby, Shirley Sweeten of Morristown, Iva Phillips of Newport, and Thelma Davis of White Pine; and several nieces and nephews.

Chester Eugene Bell

Chester Eugene Bell, age 83, of Cosby, TN, born May 9, 1915, died Friday, April 2, 1999 at Baptist Hospital of East Tenn.
Chester was a retired US Army First Lieutenant and a veteran of World War II. He operated the Holiday Gulf Service Station in Newport for many years before retiring in 1984. He was a deacon of Liberty Church in Cosby.
He was preceded in death by parents, James H. and Nancy Presnell Bell; brother, Edmund Bell; sisters, Frances Bell and Louise Bell Kyker; and great-grandson, Cory Caughron.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, ReVel Dorsey Bell, of Cosby; five children: daughter, Eugenia (Jean) Seaton, of Dandridge; daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Jo and Dan Ford; Jan and Jerry Caughron, all of Newport; Ginger Sue and Paul Cantrell, of Gatlinburg; son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Joyce Bell, of Cosby; 9 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; brothers, Clyde Bell, of Hawthorne, FL, Charles Bell, of Newport, and James Bell, of Corpus Christi, TX; sisters, Mary Bell Smith, of Morristown, Hazel Bell Kuszmaul, of Coatsville, PA, Wilma Bell Proffitt, of Newport, and Dorothy Bell Ogle, of Newberry, FL.

Evolyn Cates Cagle
Died: 04/02/1999
Evolyn Cates Cagle, 82, passed away Wednesday morning at the Lincoln Medical Center in Lincolnton, North Carolina.
She was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Grassy Fork.
Evolyn had taught school in the Cocke County School System for 38 years before her retirement in 1975. She had taught in the Ravenís Branch, Blackís, New Prospect, and Grassy Fork schools.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jess Cagle; and parents, Issac and Effie Laws Cates.
Survivors include her children, Alvin Cagle, and his wife, Carolyn, of Morristown, and Jean Dorsey of Crouse, North Carolina; her sisters, Zanna Allen of Knoxville, Naomi Seay and Beatrice Freeman, both of Del Rio, and Dorris Craddock Lynch of Knoxville; brothers, Benjamin Cates of Hartford and Earl Cates of Harrisonville, New Jersey; grandchildren, Cheryl Ann Bridges of Knoxville, Deanna Smith and Charles Cagle, both of Morristown, Daresa Suddreth of Crouse, North Carolina, Lesa Perkins of Lincolnton, North Carolina, and Tamara Rozsa of Spartanburg, South Carolina; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday morning at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Randall Freeman officiating. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday evening at the Brown Funeral Home.

Charles T. Carter

Charles T. Carter, 92, of Morristown, passed away April 1 at Heritage Center.
He was a member of West View Baptist Church.
He was the son of the late James A. and Rachel McClanahan Carter.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vera Kimbrough Carter; daughter, Jewel Dean Inman; son, Bill H. Carter; second wife, Helen Dickerson Carter; brothers, Boyd, Lloyd, Porter, Eleck, Oliver, Robert, Hubert, Billy, Dewey, and Luther; and sister, Martha Jane Corbett.
Survivors: sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Barbara Carter of Mayville, New York, and Robert Lee and Fredda Carter of Morristown; daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Jean and Jesse King and Dorothy M. and Frank Seals of Morristown; stepson, James Roach of Newport; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sister, Anna Mae Lane; brother, Clifford Carter, both of Morristown; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 8 p.m. Friday at Mayes Mortuary with Revs. Danny Lamb and Barry Rackley officiating. Graveside services will be 12 p.m. Saturday at Hamblen Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.

Billy Franklin Evans

Billy Franklin Evans, 71, of Newport, passed away Friday afternoon at the V.A. Hospital in Johnson City following a lengthy illness.
Billy was of the Baptist faith.
He was a veteran of WWII.
He was a retired construction worker.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mark H. and Molly Crumpley Evans.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline (Atkins) Evans of Newport; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon (Evans) and Jeff Gladback of Salt Lake City, Utah; and grandchildren, Donna and Amanda Gladback of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Graveside service will be 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at New Home Cemetery with Brother John Bugg officiating.
Military rites will be provided by Lance Corporal Charles C. Roberts D.A.V. Chapter #102.

Helen Rose Frary, 74, of Cincinnati, Ohio, formerly of Newport, died Sunday, March 28.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Katherine Rose; and her aunt, Cora Petree of Newport.
She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Dean and Kenneth Cropper of Lexington, Kentucky; aunt, Ida Ford of Newport; aunt and uncle, Lynn and Bill Ramsey of Maryville; cousin, Mary Freshour of Morristown; and her beloved friends, Patsy and Garold Barnhart of Ohio.
Graveside service will be 12:30 p.m. Thursday, April 1, at Union Cemetery with Rev. Riley Huffstetler officiating.

Lloyd Stanley Gregg

Lloyd Stanley Gregg, 64, of Nashville, passed away Thursday afternoon at the Nashville Memorial Hospital.
Lloyd was a veteran of the Korean War.
He retired in 1972 from the Club House Inn in Nashville, where he had been a security guard.
Lloyd is survived by his wife, Anna Ruth Fain Gregg of Nashville; his children, Janice Livingston and her husband, Murrell of Nashville, Rita Kaye Livingston and her husband, Clarence, of Arden, North Carolina, and Pamela Gregg of Nashville; his mother, Edna Gregg of Newport; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and best friends, Hank and Richard, both of Nashville.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Brown Funeral Chapel with Rev. Gene Gorrell officiating.
Military rites will be provided by the Lance Corporal Charles C. Roberts D.A.V. Chapter #102 following the service at the Union Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home.
