GREENSBORO, N.C. - Mr. Horace Bill Bailes, 79, of 1300 Westridge Road died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at his home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Forbis and Dick Funeral Service, North Elm Street Chapel. Burial will be at Westminster Gradens.

Mr. Bailes was born in Fort Mill and was a retired engineer for Southern Photo. He was a charter member of Trinity Church, where he was on the church board and held most offices of the church.

Surviving are his brother, Leon Bailes of Rock Hill; and his sister, Ann Robinson of Belmont, N.C.

The family will receive friends at Forbis and Dick Funeral Service from 4 to 6 p.m. today.

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Sylvia Burris Erby, 79, of 209 Whitner St. died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Mount Zion Baptist Church, with Dr. John T. McCoy officiating and Dr. O. Roddey, and the Revs. Sidney Murdock, Alvin T. Murdock, Joe Lee, Bobby L. Featherstone and Evangelist Sandra McCoy assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A retired domestic worker, Mrs. Erby was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church. She was a member of the hymn choir, the missionary society, AP&B Society No. 8 and Sterling Lodge No. 344. She attended York County public schools. She was the widow of Preston Erby.

Surviving are her son, William "Bo" Erby of Rock Hill; her brother, Sammy Burriss of Charlotte; five sisters, Marie Burris of High Point, N.C., Mattie Campbell and Carrie Gilmore, both of Charlotte, Lucille Pressely of Scotts Plains, N.J., and Beatrice Paden of East Orange, N.J.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and her great-great-grandchild.

The body may be viewed from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Parker Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:30 p.m. today until the service and at other times at the home of B.R. Sanders, 800 Hawley Road in McConnells.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. today.

KERSHAW - Mrs. Mildred Morgan Estridge, 79, of 7398 Old Jefferson Highway died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Midway Baptist Church, with the Revs. Randall Runion and Frank Turner officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Estridge was a retired service manager for Springs Cafeteria. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher. She was the widow of Elmore Franklin Estridge.

Surviving are her daughter, Judy E. White of Kershaw; her brother, J.L. Morgan Jr. of Charlotte; three sisters, Sara Short of Charlotte, Mary Parker of Ocean Isle, N.C., and Ann Turner of Murphy, N.C.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Johnny Taylor

FORT MILL - Mr. Johnny Wilford Taylor, 66, of 105 Myers St. died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Jubilee Christian Center in York, with the Revs. John Morris and Kenny Pressley officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery in Rock Hill.

Mr. Taylor was a native of Waxhaw, N.C., and retired from Rexam Paper Corp. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a deacon at Jubilee Christian Center in York.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Copeland Taylor; four daughters, Dianne Taylor Germundson and Debbie Taylor Chapman, both of Fort Mill, Phyllis Taylor Cook of Rock Hill, and Patricia Taylor Bartone of Sharpsburg, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

Oscar Wylie

EDISTO BEACH - Mr. Oscar Wilson Wylie, 79, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at Roper Hospital in Charleston.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Live Oak Cemetery, with the Rev. James Alewine officiating.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Wylie was a retired air traffic controller with the Federal Aviation Administration. He was a member of Edisto Island United Methodist Church. He attended the University of South Carolina and was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. He was a major in the Air Force and served in World War II and the Korean conflict. He was a fighter pilot with the 8th Air Force.

Surviving are three sons, Patrick W. Wylie of Summerville, Samuel R. Wylie of St. Simons Island, Ga., and James S. Wylie of Charleston; his daughter, Susan W. Ladd of Niceville, Fla.; two sisters, Minerva Harrison of Rock Hill and Jane Bradley of Sykesville, Md.; and six grandchildren.

CHESTER - Mrs. Muriel Yvonne Swaringen Dove, 84, formerly of Chester, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, at the York Care Facility in York.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, with the Rev. Dennis Reid officiating.

Mrs. Dove was born in Charlotte, where she attended school. She was retired from Springs Industries and a member of Saluda Street Church of God.

She was the widow of William Dove and Earl Wright.

Surviving are her son, Robert Lee Wright of Miami; her daughter, Sylvia Stohler of Bloomington, Ind.; her sister, Virginia Hall of Charlotte; and four grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Karla Morton Hinson of the home; his son, Andrew Jarod Hinson of the home; his daughter, Adrian Leigh Hinson of the home; his sister, Kathy H. Clanton of Rock Hill; and his paternal grandmother, Kathleen Hinson of Concord.

John McGill Jr.

CLOVER - Mr. John Leslie McGill Jr., 78, of 412 Memorial Drive died Jan. 1, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Bethany ARP Church, with the Revs. Alan Morrow and George McGill officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. McGill was a member of Bethany ARP Church, where he served as an elder and deacon. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Darcy Bouknight McGill; three daughters, Judy M. Thomas and Renee M. Wilmouth, both of Clover, and Mary Jane McGill of Winston-Salem, N.C.; his brother, Charles McGill of Clover; his sister, Janet McGill of Charlotte; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

John Neal Sr.

HEATH SPRINGS - Mr. John Wilson "Johnny" Neal Sr., 86, of 148 Barrett Road died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at White Oak Manor in Lancaster.

The funeral service will be 3 p.m. today at Oakhurst Baptist Church, with the Revs. John Rogers and B. R. Wallace officiating. Burial will be at Oakhurst Baptist Church cemetery.

Mr. Neal was born in Heath Springs. He was a member of Oakhurst Baptist Church, where he served as the Sunday school superintendent for several years and had perfect attendance for more than 37 years. He also served as chairman of the deacon board for several years. He was a cattle farmer.

Mr. Neal was the widower of Lucille Gardner Neal.

Surviving are his son, John Wilson Neal Jr. of Heath Springs; two daughters, Margaret Mackey of Heath Springs and Jo Lynn Barrett of Lugoff; two brothers, C. O. Neal Jr. and E. Jack Neal, both of Heath Springs; his sister, Mary Wallace of Lancaster; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

LAWNDALE, N.C. - Mr. Grant Steve Poole, 52, of 441 East Double Shoals Road died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby, N.C.

Mr. Poole was office manager of L & L Motors.

LANCASTER - Mr. James Lewis "Wild Cat" Sims Sr., 45, of 1138 9th St. died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Sims was retired from Johnston Mills.

Surviving are his wife, Rachel Pritchard Sims; three sons, James Sims Jr., Joseph A. Sims and Jamie Pritchard, all of Lancaster; two daughters, Wendy Sims and Gail Sims, both of Lancaster; his mother, Julia Sims of Lancaster; five brothers, Wayne C. Sims of Rockingham, N.C., and Marion R. "Buck" Sims, Henry "Shot" Sims, Leroy Sims and David Terry, all of Lancaster; his sister, Jessie Mae Terry of Rockingham; and five grandchildren.

William Taylor

LANCASTER - Mr. William D. Taylor, 78, of 1843 Old Hillside Drive died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at the Chesterfield Convalescent Center in Cheraw.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster chapel, with the Rev. Dale Roach officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Taylor was retired from Springs Industries. He was also a former race car owner and driver, who raced at the Lancaster Speedway.

Surviving are four sons, Mark Taylor of Charlotte, David Taylor of North Carolina, and Wayne Taylor and Ricky Taylor, both of Lancaster; his daughter, Vikie Gainey of Lancaster; two brothers, Charles D. Taylor and J.D. Taylor, both of Lancaster; his sister, Louise Roberts of Lancaster; and three grandchildren.

LANCASTER - Mr. Leo J. Beckham, 70, of 156 South Jackson Road died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Beckham was a native of Lancaster and retired from Springs Industries. He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Pritchard Beckham; his stepson, Donald R. Pritchard of Newton, N.C.; two brothers, Carroll Beckham of Clover and Roy T. Beckham of York; five sisters, Sadie Varnadore, Mattie B. Knight, Bertha B. Parris, all of Great Falls, and Eunice B. Lowery and Mary Pettit, both of Lancaster; and two step-grandchildren.

LANCASTER - Mr. Steven Thomas Beckham, 39, of 1776 Barton Road died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Mr. Beckham was a native of Lancaster and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He worked as a hair stylist.

Surviving are his father, William Thomas Beckham of Lancaster; his mother, Lois Robinson Beckham of Lancaster; his sister, Debbie Sims of Lancaster; his nephew, Scott Sims of Lancaster; and his niece, Jennie Sims.

Velma Gregory

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Velma Melton Gregory, 87, of 1800 India Hook Road died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, at Beverly Health Care Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Northside Baptist Church, with Dr. Jerry Sosebee officiating and the Rev. Jerry Devinney assisting. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Gregory retired from J.P. Stevens Co. after more than 40 years of service. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Woman's Missionary Union and the Young at Hearts.

Surviving are her husband, Homer Gregory; her brother, Claude M. Melton of Lenior, N.C.; and two sisters, Ann Partlow and Tuney Lowry, both of Rock Hill.

A member of Free Will Baptist Church, Mrs. Hooks formerly was employed by Springs Industries and was an avid gardener. She also enjoyed fishing and crafts.

Surviving are her mother, Eva Rogers Hooks of Fort Mill; her long-time companion, Bobby Joe Lane of Fort Mill; her son, Tony Lee Wallace of Fort Mill; two daughters, Janice Ann Randall of Fort Mill and Kathy Sue Clark of Charlotte; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

YORK - Mr. James Defoy "Dee" Jackson, 70, of 1928 Abbey Lane died Saturday, Jan. 2 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

Mr. Jackson was a native of Fingerville. He was retired from Bowater International and was an U.S. Navy veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Zelene Bridges Jackson; two sons, Jim Jackson of Mint Hill, N.C., and Philip Eugene "Flip" Jackson of Chester; his brother, Leon J. Jackson of Shelby; and three grandchildren.

Ulmer Johnson

FORT LAWN - Mr. Ulmer Sinclair Johnson, 80, of 4491 Bobcat Drive died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at McLean-Bumgardner Twin Oaks chapel in Belmont, N.C., with Chaplin Bill Cobb officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery in Mount Holly, N.C.

A native of Cedartown, Ga., Mr. Johnson was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with combat units in the Rhineland-Central Europe campaign. He was a retired cabinet maker with Display Fixtures, Inc. of Charlotte and a member of American Legion Post 380 in Charlotte.

Surviving are his wife, Mazie Martin Johnson; his daughter, Avris J. Jones of Fort Lawn; his son, Freddie L. Johnson Sr. of Edgemoor; his brother, G.L. Johnson of Austell, Ga.; his sister, Frances Shumaker of Tallapoosa, Ga.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Carolyn Anderson Johnson Massey, 81, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, at the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. today at Ebenezer ARP Church Parlor, with the Rev. Dr. Boyce Wilson officiating.

Mrs. Massey was a native of Rock Hill, a member of Ebenezer ARP Church and Circle No. 2. She was a member of the Junior Keystone Club and attended N.C. Woman's College in Greensboro, N.C.

A descendent of two of the oldest families in Rock Hill, Mrs. Massey was the widow of Henry Massey Sr. Her paternal grandfather, Dr. Jerome Bonaparte Johnson, was mayor of Rock Hill for more than 30 years. Mrs. Massey's maternal grandfather, John Gary Anderson, was the founder of the Anderson Motor Company.

Surviving are her son, Henry Massey Jr. of Rock Hill; her daughter, Ida Massey Shelton of Dunwoody, Ga.; her stepdaughter, Phoebe Massey Evans of Lancaster, Calif.; two brothers, C. Albert Johnson and John A. Johnson, both of Rock Hill; and two grandchildren.

RUSKIN, Fla. - Mrs. Minnie Lee Nance, 78, of 1702 30th Ave. S.E., formerly of Fort Mill, S.C., died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Oakland Cemetery in Gaffney, S.C., with the Rev. Ron Jackson officiating.

Mrs. Nance was born in Cherokee County and owned and operated Adult Congregate Living Facility. She was of the Baptist faith. She was the widow of Charles Nance.

Surviving are her son, Charles Nance of Ruskin, Fla.; three brothers, Garland Sellars of Blacksburg, S.C., Olin Sellars of Gaffney, and Bobby Sellars of Spartanburg, S.C.; two sisters, Estelle MacCain and Paunice Sellars, both of Gaffney; two grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

Richard Rhoads Sr.

BEAUFORT - Mr. Richard Thomas Rhoads Sr., 68, of 1004 Hodge Drive died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday in the Anderson Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be at Beaufort National Cemetery with full military honors.

Mr. Rhoads was born in Philadelphia. He was a retired air traffic control operator in the military and was a decorated sergeant.

He was employed by Rose Supply and Sea Island Supply for many years as a sales purchasing agent.

Surviving are his wife, Betty E. Rhoads of the home; five sons, Jeff Rhoads of Rock Hill, Richard Thomas Rhoads Jr. of Sylvester, Ga., Cameron Edward Rhoads of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Daryl Rhoads and Paul Rhoads, both of Beaufort; his daughter, Betty Rhoads Ennis of Beaufort; four brothers, Edward Rhoads of King of Prussia, Pa., Frank Rhoads and Thomas Rhoads, both of Philadelphia, and Billy Rhoads of Little Egg Harbor, N.J.; his sister, Amelia Heuchert of Clinton, Conn.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Grier Stewart

ROCK HILL - Mr. Grier Pierce Stewart, 73, of North Myrtle Beach, formerly of Rock Hill, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

A native of Clover, Mr. Stewart retired from the Rock Hill Fire Department after 30 years, achieving the rank of captain. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in France.

Surviving are his wife, Thelma Latham Stewart; two sons, Leslie Stewart of Rock Hill and Terry Stewart of Shalotte, N.C.; his daughter, Rena S. Owens of Rock Hill; two brothers, Loyd Stewart and Mack Stewart, both of Clover; and his sister, Annie Lee Ballard of Clover.

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Coline Fowler Thomas, 99, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at Beverly Health Care Center.

Mrs. Thomas was a charter member of the Oakland Baptist Church and retired from the Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co. She also worked at Thackstons Studio.

A York native, Mrs. Dick was a homemaker. She was a charter member of the Thursday Afternoon Book Club and a member of First Presbyterian Church and its Circle No. 4. She was the widow of Hassell H. Dick.

ROCK HILL - Mr. Jessie Gist, 63, of 923 Albert St. died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

Mr. Gist was a U.S. Navy veteran. He retired from J. P. Stevens when his health declined and was a member of the Parker Funeral Home staff. He was a member of Mount Dowell Baptist Church, where he worked on the finance committee and sound system committee.

He was the widower of Ellaree Gist.

Surviving are four sons, Jessie Lee Gist Jr. and Freddie Gist, both of Rock Hill, Alvin Gist of Columbia, and Gaylord Mitchell of Silver Springs, Md.; two daughters, Delores Adams and Elaine Gist, both of Rock Hill; his brother, David Gist of McConnells; three sisters, Annie Mae Gaston and Helen Hayes, both of Charlotte, and Rosena Simpson of Winston-Salem, N.C.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A Lancaster County native, Mr. Hagins was the retired former owner and operator of Hagins Pharmacy. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and served in the Pacific on various hospital ships. He also was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Marion Simrill Hagins; his daughter, Julie Hagins Hinson of West Columbia; two brothers, Ralph Todd Hagins of Columbia and Odell B. Hagins of Lancaster; two sisters, Mary Alice Fickling of Hickory, N.C., and Marian Hagins Small of Lancaster.
