HEATH SPRINGS - Rev. J. Perry Bowers, 94, of 791 Fork Hill Road died Friday, May 15, 1998, at the Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Monday at Fork Hill Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bruce Davenport, Steve Neal and Archie Neal officiating. Burial will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.

Born in Lancaster County, he was a Baptist minister who was the pastor at New Hope Baptist Church and Bethlehem Baptist Church before his retirement in 1968. After his retirement, Rev. Bowers served as interim pastor at numerous churches in the Moriah Baptist Association.

He was the widower of Mildred Emma Hinson.

Surviving are his son, Keith H. Bowers of Kent, Ohio; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the Mahaffey Funeral Home from 7 to 9 tonight.

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Myrtle Waters Craig, 76, of 13 Pitts Ave. died Friday, May 15, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bruce Wyatt officiating and the Rev. Bully Faulkenberry assisting. Burial will be at Laurelwood Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Craig was a member of Eastside Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Surviving are her four sons, Roger Craig, Eddie Craig and Ricky Craig, all of Rock Hill, and Monty Craig of Lancaster; two daughters, Christine Craig Gay of Sumter and Paulette Craig Lyons of Huntersville, N.C.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

CHESTER - Mrs. Ruby Canipe Gibson, 83, died Friday, May 15, 1998, at the Chester County Nursing Center.

The graveside service will be 4:30 p.m. today at Chester Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Chip Snead officiating.

Mrs. Gibson was a member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church. She was the widow of William Henry Gibson.

Surviving are her son, Robert Gibson of Summerville; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Doris Hardeman Giles, 79, of 14816 Thomas Road died Saturday, May 16, 1998, at Mecklenburg Health Care.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Monday at Zoar United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jimmy Howard officiating. Burial will follow at the Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Giles was a retiree of Springs Mills and was a member of Zoar United Methodist Church. She was the widow of Sylvester Giles.

Surviving are three sons, Steve Giles and Larry Giles, both of Fort Mill, and David Giles of Charlotte; three daughters, Gwen Johnson of Surfside Beach, Iris Apperson of Mooresville, N.C., and Marcia Jones of Charlotte; her sister, Myrtle Price of Fort Mill; 12 grandchildren and six great-granchildren.

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Sue Ferguson Montgomery, 69, of 649 Stonewall Court died Friday, May 15, 1988, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Rogers Memorial ARP Church, with the Rev. Steve Reynolds officiating. Internment will follow at Grandview Memorial Park.

Mrs. Montgomery was a homemaker and member of Rogers Memorial ARP Church and York County Rebekah Lodge 17, where she was past Noble Guard. She was past president of the Rebekah Assembly of South Carolina.

Surviving are her husband, William D. Montgomery; two sons, Calvin E. Montgomery and Charles J. Montgomery, both of Rock Hill; her daughter, Susan M. Doster of Rock Hill; three brothers, Jack O. Ferguson of Myrtle Beach, Lyle D. Ferguson of Clover and Earl B. Ferguson Jr. of Rock Hill; her sister, Rebecca F. Tinker; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

John Morrison
CHESTER - Mr. John G. Morrison, 74, of 1564 Columbia Road died Friday, May 15, 1998, at his home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Barron Funeral Home, with the Rev. Carl Williams officiating. Burial will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.

A native of Great Falls, Mr. Morrison attended Chester County schools. He was retired from Springs Industries.

Surviving are his wife, Jiner H. Morrison; his son, Johnny R. Morrison of Chester; his daughter, Peggy M. Littlejohn of Chester; his sister, Daisy M. Crouch of Great Falls; two brothers, Earl Morrison and Pearl Morrison, both of Great Falls; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

Preston Pendergrass
Charlotte- The Rev. Preston Pendergrass, 82, of 1027 Nancy Drive died Thursday, May 14, 1998, at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Antioch Baptist Church in Charlotte. The burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Charlotte.

A native of the Pilgrim Community in Chester, the Rev. Pendergrass received his high school education at the Brainerd Institute in Chester. He received a bachelor of arts degree and a master of divinity degree from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte. He also received an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill.

Rev. Pendergrass was an Army veteran of World War II. He was licensed to practice ministry at Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chester in 1947 and was ordained in 1948.

He was the pastor at Union Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church in Chester; Upper Hope Station Baptist Church in Fairfield; Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Belmont, N.C.; and retired from Antioch Baptist Church in Charlotte.

He was active in areas related to Christian education in Mount Peace District Sunday School and the BTU Congress, Lanes Creek Baptist Association, General Baptist State Convention, Baptist Ministers Conference, United Baptist Association and the Progressive National Baptist Congress. He served as college minister, instructor and secretary of the board of trustees at Friendship Junior College.

Surviving are his wife, Lois Gist Pendergrass; two sons, Preston Pendergrass Jr. and Felton Pendergrass, both of Charlotte; two daughters, Connie Pendergrass Williams and Donna Pendergrass Sanford, both of Jackson, Miss.; his sister, Alma P. Wilks of Chester; his brother, Woodrow W. Pendergrass of Chester; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Antioch Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church at noonMonday.

FORT MILL - Mrs. Wilma Robinson, 78, of 251 Amelia Drive died Saturday, May 16, 1998, at Ebenezer Nursing Home.

There will be no funeral service.

Mrs. Robinson was a registered nurse.

Surviviving are her husband, Gordon Robinson of Fort Mill; two sons, David Robinson and Nathan Robinson, both of Michigan.

William Rowe
YORK- Mr. William "Bill" Donald Rowe, 65, of 307 Boxwood Court died Friday, May 15, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Philadelphia United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Lee Phillips officiating.

Born in Selinsgrove, Pa., Mr. Rowe was retired from the York County Housing Authority. He worked for the S.C. Department of Natural Resources as a deputy wildlife officer and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict.

Surviving are three sisters, Nancy R. Riegel of Hirarm, Ga., Jean R. Roberts of Danville, Pa., and Mary Sheldon of Selinsgrove, Pa.

Chal Steele
YORK - Mr. Chal Edward Steele, 77, of 111 S. Congress Street died Saturday, May 16, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Revs. Mike Lowery and Ned Duncan officiating.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Steele was a pest exterminator. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of West End Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Davis Steele; his son, Lewis F. Steele of Rock Hill; his daughter, Mary S. Horne of York; five brothers, Clyde Steele, Frank Steele, Jeffie Steele, Joe Steele and Marty Steele, all of Lancaster; four sisters, Mae Steele of North Carolina, Mary Carnes of Pageland and Sarah Knight and Judy Steele, both of Lancaster; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

MORAVIAN FALLS, N.C. - Mrs. Frances Mildred Brookshire Broyhill, 83, of N.C. Highway 16 South, died Sunday, May 17, 1998, at Presbyterian Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Walnut Grove Baptist Church, with the Revs. Horace Moree and Ray Osborne officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Broyhill was a Moravian Falls, N.C., native. She was the widow of Charles Vaughn Broyhill. She was retired from Schneider Mills and was a member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Charles Spencer Broyhill and James Howard Broyhill, both of Moravian Falls, N.C., and Charles Vaughn Broyhill Jr. of Conover, N.C.; two daughters, Betty Williams of Rock Hill and Joann Green of Jamestown, N.C.; her brother, Russell Brookshire of Moravian Falls; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday.

The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

FORT MILL - Ms. Myrtle Helms Hood, 90, died Sunday, May 17, 1998, at Lincoln Nursing Center in Lincolnton, N.C.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Mrs. Beatrice W. Johnson of 918 Sevier St., formerly of York, died Friday, May 15, 1998.

The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Barber Memorial Cemetery in Rock Hill.

Mrs. Johnson was a a native of York. She was a member of St. Matthew's United Methodist Church in Greensboro, N.C., and a member of the Magnolia Chapter No. 23 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are her son, Henry L. Johnson of Greensboro.

James Lewis
CUSSETA, Ga. - Mr. James Jack Lewis, 57, died Thursday, May 14, 1998, at Martin Army Community Hospital.

The graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Parkhill Cemetery.

Mr. Lewis was co-owner of Ranger Joe's Barber Shop in Columbus and Fort Stewart, Ga. He was a Columbus, Ga., native, and lived most of his life there. He graduated from Baker High School, Barber College and was a member of the AUSA Association and the Bass Club Association.

Surviving are his wife, Darlene Lewis of Cusseta; two brothers, Daniel Timothy Lewis Jr. of Rock Hill and Milton Ackerman of Shuterville; and four sisters, Geneva Moore of Box Springs, Ga., Geraldine Edeker of Moss Point, Miss., Audrey Fatzinger of Lutz, Fla., and Vergie Wiksinson of Dowling Park, Fla.

CHESTER - Mrs. Marie Bell Miller, 87, of 170 Harris St. died Thursday, May 14, 1998, at her home.

A native of Boswell, Okla., Mrs. Miller was the widow of Charles W. Miller.

A native of Concord, N.C., Mrs. Moree was a retired Springs Industries employee and a member of Fort Lawn Baptist Church.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Armstrong was the widow of Jack H. Armstrong. She was a member of Woodland United Methodist Church and a member of the Susannah Wesley Circle. She was a homemaker.

Surviving are her son, Jack H. Armstrong of Rock Hill; her daughter, Janis Morris of Rock Hill; her brother, W.E. Oates of Rock Hill; her sister, Anne Oates Rorie of Charlotte; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

YORK - The funeral for Miss Alberta Collins, 48, of 4 Pecan Circle, who died Friday, May 15, 1998, at Vencor Hospital in Greensboro, N.C., will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at New Home AME Zion Church, with the Rev. C.J. Jenkins officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Miss Collins was a member of New Home AME Zion Church. She was an employee of Rauch Industries in Gastonia, N.C.

Surviving are her son, Eddie Lee Collins of York; three brothers, James Collins and Robert McConnell, both of York, and William Arthur Collins of Rock Hill; seven sisters, Dorothy Burris, Martha Ellen McConnell, Josephine Hope, and Annie McConnell, all of York, Elaine McConnell and Janie McConnell, both of Fort Mill, and Christine Burris of High Point, N.C.; and her grandchild.

The body may be viewed from 5 to 7 tonight at Wright Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

FORT MILL - The funeral for Mrs. Myrtle Helms Hood, 90, who died Sunday, May 17, 1998, at Lincoln Nursing Center in Lincolnton, N.C., will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church with her grandson, the Rev. Randal Helms, officiating and the Rev. Charles Cranford assisting.

Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Hood was retired from the Mecklenburg County school system, and was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. She was the widow of Albert Helms Sr. and R. Jack Hood.

Surviving are her son, the Rev. Albert C. Helms Jr. of Lincolnton, N.C.; her daughter, Helen Jane Hooks of Fort Mill; two brothers, Paul Williams and Burdette Williams, both of Indian Trail, N.C.; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

KERSHAW - Mrs. Masie Gandy Hunter, 80, of 6588 White St. died Monday, May 18, 1998, at Heath Springs Residential Care Center.

A native of Kershaw, Mrs. Hunter was a member of Second Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for 28 years and was a GA leader for several years. She was retired from Springs Industries and was a member of Kershaw Senior Citizens.

Surviving are six brothers, Ralph Gandy of Columbia, Carl Gandy of Lancaster, James C. Gandy, Otis Gandy, Earl Gandy and Charles Gandy, all of Kershaw; four sisters, Ruth Lawhorne of Greensboro, N.C., Vera Hunter, Jessie G. Hinson and Myrtle Hinson, all of Kershaw.

LANCASTER - Mr. William Hazel Pardue, 88, of Monroe Highway died Sunday, May 17, 1998, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zion United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Frank Lybrand and F.H. "Sonny" Gossett officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Pardue was a member of Zion United Methodist Church, where he was an active member of the choir for 74 years. A native of Lancaster, he was the widower of Alfleda Steele Pardue. He was a retired transport driver for Wilson Gas and Oil Co. He was a Past Master and a 50-year member of Camp Creek Masonic Lodge No. 317.

Surviving are his daughter, Joan Belk of Houston, Texas; and two grandchildren.

ROCK HILL - Mr. James Robert Wilson Jr., 66, of 1307 Saluda Road died Monday, May 18, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A native of York County, Mr. Wilson was a self-employed wallpaper hanger, and was a military police officer in the Army. He was the widower of Betty Jane Wilson.

Surviving are two sons, Davis Wilson and Eddie Wilson, both of Rock Hill; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A native of Pineville, Mrs. Garrison was the widow of Paul Garrison. She was a homemaker and a lifelong member of Flint Hill Baptist Church.

ARLINGTON, Va. - Mr. Ronald James "Jimmy" Wood, 44, died Friday, May 15, 1998, at Manassas, Va.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mountcastle Funeral Home in Woodbridge, Va., with the Rev. William Mahon officiating. Burial will be at Woodbine Cemetery in Manassas.

Mr. Wood worked for many years as a plumber for the Department of the Army at Fort Myer. He was a member of the Manassas Moose Lodge No. 1380.

Surviving are his daughter, Monica J. Hancock of Blacksburg; his parents, James R."Buddy" and Delores M. "Doris" Wood of Manassas; his sister, Robin E. Little of Manassas; and his brother, David C. Wood of Charlotte.
