MCCONNELLS - Mr. Thomas Ellie Burris Jr., 81, of 2425 McConnells Highway died Wednesday, March 4, 1998, at his home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Olivet Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Chip McArthur officiating and the Revs. Fred Thompson and Samuel B. Hoyt assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Born in York County, Mr. Burris was a retired farmer. He was a lifetime member of Olivet Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder and clerk of session. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was the widower of Edgar McKeown Love Burris.

Surviving are three daughters, Jane Love Starnes of Rock Hill, Ann Burris Hawley of McConnells and Carol Burris Wilson of Lowrys; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at York Funeral Home.

CHESTER - Mrs. Anne Woche Colvin, 66, of 527 Penn Lake Road died Thursday, March 5, 1998, at her home.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Chester ARP Church, with the Rev. Dwight Pearson officiating.

Born in Newark, N.J., Mrs. Colvin was a retired caseworker with the Department of Social Services. She was a graduate of Rutherford High School in Rutherford, N.J., and Centenary Junior College in Hackettstown, N.J. She was a member of Chester ARP Church.

Surviving are her husband, W. Penn Colvin of Chester; two sons, Jake S. Colvin of Charleston and John W. Colvin of Chester; her daughter, Margaret Anne Colvin of Chester; her brother, John A. Woche of Rockville, Md.; and four granddaughters.

ROCK HILL - Mr. Ernest E. Sexton, 85, of 768 Cedar St. died Wednesday, March 4, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Greene Funeral Home, with the Revs. Mike Wooten and Joey Nelms officiating. Burial will be at Laurelwood Cemetery.

A Rock Hill native, Mr. Sexton was retired from J.P. Stevens Industrial Mill with 24 years of service. He attended Garden Sanctuary Church of God.

Surviving are his wife, Janie P. Sexton; his son, Darrell E. Sexton of Rock Hill; his daughter, Debra S. Osborne of Rock Hill; his sister, Daisy Harris of York; and two grandchildren.

ROCK HILL - Mr. Gregory "Greg" Jerome Sims Jr., 17, of 839 Eastwood Drive died Tuesday, March 3, 1998, in Van Wyck.

A graveside service will be 3:30 p.m. Monday at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Bruce Wyatt officiating.

A native of Kansas City, Mo., he was a 10th-grade student at Rock Hill High School, where he played football. He worked after school at the Shrimp Boat Restaurant.

Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Deborah L. Sims and Leroy Swinton, both of the home; his father and stepmother, Gregory J. Sims Sr. and Annie Sims, both of Kansas City, Mo.; his brother, Jeremy Sims of the home; his sister, Madison Sims of the home; his maternal grandmother, Gwen Armstrong of Kansas City, Mo.; and his step-paternal grandmother, Rebecca Swinton of Mount Pleasant.

JACKSON - Mr. Alvin E. "Al" Taylor, 72, of 200 Atomic Blvd. died Wednesday, March 4, 1998.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Matlock Baptist Church, with Robert L. Collum and W.H. Gunnoe officiating. Burial will be at Jackson Memorial Cemetery.

A Montgomery, Ala., native, Mr. Taylor was of the Baptist faith and was a member of several community organizations.

Surviving are his wife, Florine Cullen Taylor of Jackson; his son, Bobby O. Cullen of Fort Mill; his brother, Robert Taylor of Montgomery, Ala.; two sisters, Estelle Morgan of Lexington and Jenette Dennis of Prattville, Ala.; two grandchildren; and his great-grandson.

SHELBY, N.C. - Mr. Elmo Suttle Cabaniss, 75, of 1403 Lackey St. died Thursday, March 5, 1998, at Carolina Care in Cherryville.

A graveside service with full Masonic rites will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Cleveland Memorial Park, with the Rev. Bob Dills officiating.

Born in Cleveland County, Mr. Cabanis was the co-owner of Cabaniss Sunoco. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of First Baptist Church and Cleveland Masonic Lodge No. 202. He was the widower of Esteline Boyles Cabaniss.

Surviving are his son, Mike Cabaniss of Shelby; his daughter, Lorraine Gardner of Shelby; two brothers, Wilber Cabiness of Shelby and Paul Cabaniss of Rock Hill; three sisters, Buena Kirby of Hudson, N.C., Mary Lee Camp of Eaton Rapids, Mich., and Jane Weaver of Shelby; and three grandchildren.

CLOVER - Mr. Robert Leslie Faris, 83, of 601 Thomas Road died Thursday, March 5, 1998, at his home.

A memorial service will be 4 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Paul Hutchison officiating. Burial will be private.

Born in York County, Mr. Faris was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of First United Methodist Church. He was retired from the Postal Service after 40 years. He was past Worshipful Master of Alpine Lodge No. 208. He also was Grand Guard of S.C. Eastern Star, where he was a charter member and a past Boy Scout leader. He was the widower of Ina Lee Adams Faris.

Surviving are three sons, Ralph Faris of Rock Hill, and Richard Faris and Bob Faris, both of Clover; his daughter, Judy F. Falls of Clover; his sister, Margaret Pendleton of Clover; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Joyce Crosby Crank, 52, of Charlotte, formerly of Chester, died Friday, March 6, 1998, at Carolinas Medical Center.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Rock Well AME Zion Church in Charlotte, with the Rev. W.M. Jordan III officiating and the Rev. J.K. Stringfellow assisting. Burial will be at Sweet Hope Baptist Church cemetery in Carlisle.

Mrs. Crank was the owner of Crank's Catering Service in Charlotte and was a former member of Sweet Hope Baptist Church. She was a member of Rock Well AME Zion Church, where she was on the Deaconess Board, was chairwoman of the Pastor's Aid, was on the Missionary Circle and was a member of the Golden Gate Gospel Choir. She was a graduate of Finley High School.

Surviving are her husband, Odell Crank; her son, Oree O. Crank of Charlotte; two daughters, Rashellia C. Brown of Baltimore and Camille S. Crank of Charlotte; three brothers, Lee Crosby Jr., Perry Davis and Benjamin Piper, all of Chester; six sisters, Clara C. Hardin, Mary A. Sanders, Gloria J. Crosby, and Dessie Land, all of Chester, Sarah Taborn of Norfolk, Va., and Paula Phar of Charlotte; and four grandchildren.

FORT MILL - Mr. William Marion Dawkins, 65, of 102 Laurel Circle died Friday, March 6, 1998, at the Bowman-Gray Baptist Hospital Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Evergreen Cemetery, with the Rev. Clay Waldrop officiating.

Born in Chester, Mr. Dawkins was employed as a technician in the pest control industry. He was also a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving are his wife, Jewel P. Dakins; three sons, W.M. "Butch" Dawkins Jr. of Denver, N.C., Alan "Del" Dawkins of Gastonia, N.C., and Benjamin Dawkins of Fort Mill; two daughters, Karey D. Born in Chester County, Mrs. Hanna was a homemaker. She attended Chester County schools. She was the widow of John Earl Hanna Sr.

YORK - Mr. James William "Will" Jamison, 77, of 124 Washington St. died Thursday, March 5, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill. The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at St. John Baptist Church in Sharon, with the Rev. Tony Dogan officiating, assisted by the Revs. James Burris and J.C. Miller.

Mr. Jamison was a retired farmer. He was a member of St. John Baptist Church in Sharon and the AP&B Society.

Surviving are his wife, Annie Bell Jamison; his son, Willie Bob Jamison of York; three daughters, Hazel Jamison and Fredonia Allison of York, and Venella McClure of Hickory Grove; 13 grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. today.

Born in Lancaster, Mrs. McDow was a homemaker and received a teaching certificate from Winthrop College. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw chapel, with the Rev. Carson Linkous officiating. Burial will be at Blackmon Cemetery.

The Rev. Nelms was a member of the Church of God and was a homemaker. She was the widow of John Arthur Nelms.

Surviving are two sons, James Nelms and John Nelms, both of Wilmington; four daughters, Frances Harton of Charlotte, Marie Gregory of Pulaski, Va., Nancy Allred of Ramsaum, N.C., and Barbara Booyer of Spring Lake, N.C.; 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and her great-great-grandchild.

Born in Rock Hill, Mr. Sutton was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and participated in the Iwo Jima invasion.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Sutton; his son, Barney Odell Sutton Jr. of Fort Mill; his daughter, Janice Smith of Asheville, N.C.; his stepmother, Bertie Sutton; four sisters, Betty Patterson of Fort Mill, Sherly Pierson of Wilmington, Del., Carol Shealy of Easley, and Linda Maxey of Chatham, Va.; and two grandchildren.

YORK - Mr. Herbert Williams, 87, of 16 Maiden Lane died Friday, March 6, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Williams was a retired textile employee at Sullivan and Carson. He was a trustee at Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church and the Lux Fiat Masonic Lodge No. 254.

Surviving is his wife, Sitrena F. Williams of the home.

Luceille Mitlin
ROCK HILL - Mrs. Luceille Liston Mitlin, 79, assistant professor emeritus of Mississippi State University, died Saturday, March 7, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be private. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

Mrs. Mitlin was head of the sciences section of the university library, and set up one of the first computerized information retrieval services in the Southeast.

After her retirement in 1979, she moved to Rock Hill and served as an adjunct professor in the library at Winthrop University. She was the author of several scholarly papers and was a member of several honorary societies, including Phi Kappa Phi, Delta Phi Alpha, Gamma Sigma Delta and Sigma Gamma Epsilon.

A native of Clarksburg, W.Va., Mrs. Mitlin earned an A.B. degree from West Virginia University and an M.A. from Mississippi State University. She was a chemist with Lever Brothers and the Good Housekeeping Institute, and taught school in Montgomery County, Md.

Surviving are her husband, Norman Mitlin; her son, Laurance Mitlin of Rock Hill; her brother, Laurence Liston of Bethesda, Md.; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to the charity of one's choice.
