Martha Zorn Peeples
Martha Zorn Peeples, 74, of Barnwell died Dec. 28, 2001, at Barnwell County Hospital. 
Funeral services were held at 1 a.m. Dec. 31 at Seven Pines Baptist Church in Snelling, with burial in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery. The Revs. Billy Mew and Mark Watfold officiated. Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of arrangements.  
Mrs. Peeples was born in Barnwell County. She was the daughter of the late Charlie and Elvira Aldrich Zorn. She was a homemaker and a member of Seven Pines Baptist Church. She was predeceased by a sister, Kathleen Z. Cling and a brother, Johnnie A. Zorn Sr. 
Survivors are two sons, Robert Peeples of Barnwell and Henry Peeples of Columbia; two daughters, Alice "Sissy" Still of Hilda and Ruth Lunsford of Barnwell; three brothers, Stanley Zorn of Barnwell, Aubrey Zorn of King George, Va. and LaVern Zorn of Kidder, Mo.; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. 

Mary Anne Halford Lee
Mary Anne Halford Lee, 89, of Barnwell, died Jan. 21, 2002 at the Barnwell County Hospital.  
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Mole Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in the Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery. The Revs. Mark Watford and Billy Mew officiated. Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of arrangements. 
Mrs. Lee was a retired bookkeeper with The People Sentinel newspaper. She was a member of the Long Branch Baptist Church. She was married to the late L.C. Lee. 
Survivors are one son and daughter-in-law, Herbert and Judy Lee of Barnwell; one sister, Maude Bonds of Barnwell; three granddaughters, Penny Weber of Sumter and Vanessa Baxley and Bobbie Epperson, both of Barnwell; and 13 great-grandchildren. 

James Edward Thomas
James Edward Thomas, 48, of Williston, died Jan. 14, 2002 at the Barnwell County Hospital.  
Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. on Jan. 17 at the Chapel of Mole Funeral Home. Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of arrangements. 
Mr. Thomas was a native of Patterson, Ga. He was the son of the late Rouse and Lucille Woodcock Thomas. He attended River of Life Church. He was a member of the Salkehatchie Hunting Club. 
Survivors are his wife, Catherine Jenkins Thomas of Williston; one daughter, Jeannie Thomas of Brunswick, Ga.; one son, James Rouse Thomas of Waynesville, Ga.; one stepson, Roy Parrish of Williston; and one brother, Robert Thomas of Blackshear, Ga. 

Nancy Carole Jowers Ziegler
Nancy Carole Ziegler Jowers, 42 of Seagrove, N C., formerly of Williston, died Jan. 20, 2002 at her home. 
Memorial services were held at 3 p.m. Jan. 22 at Cross Road Baptist Church. The Rev. Johnny R. Henderson officiated. Pugh Funeral Home of Asheboro, N.C. was in charge of arrangements. 
Mrs. Ziegler was a native of South Carolina. She was formerly a Kindergarten teacher at Seagrove Elementary School, Farmer Elementary School and Ramseur Elementary School. She was a member of Cross Road Baptist Church and assisted her husband who is Minister of Youth and Family. 
Survivors are her husband, Lee Ziegler; two sons, Zack and Luke Ziegler of the home.; mother and stepfather, Mary and Byron Reed of Williston; and two brothers, Ronnie Jowers of Atlanta, Ga. and Brian Jowers of Columbia. 

Thomas J. Keller Sr.
Thomas J. Keller Sr., 93, of Allendale, died Jan. 24, 2002 in the Allendale County Hospital after an extended illness. 
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Swallow Savannah United Methodist Church, with burial in thechurch cemetery. Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home of Allendale was in charge of arrangements. 
Mr. Keller was born Sept. 29, 1908 in Calhoun County. He was the son of the late William Adam Keller and Eleanor Wolf Keller. He served as superintendent of the Allendale County Public School system for 14 years. He was the former owner and operator of both the Lobster House and the Allendale Motor Court. He was a Mason and a member of the Swallow Savannah United Methodist Church. 
Survivors are two sons, Thomas J. Keller Jr. of Edisto Beach and John S. Keller of Leesville; one daughter, Martha K. Russell of Allendale; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. 

Gene W. Croft
Gene W. "Bubba" Croft, 62, of Columbia, died Jan. 23, 2002. 
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Jan. 27, at Dunbar Funeral Home, with burial in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery. Dunbar Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. 
Mr. Croft was born in Barnwell County. He was the son of Inez Warren Croft and the late Ernest Croft Sr. He was retired from Ryder Truck Rentals and worked part-time with Penske and Metal Fabricators. He was married to the late Caroline Shirah Croft. 
Survivors are one son, Gene W. Croft Jr. of West Columbia; two daughters, Candy Sanders of Lexington and Tanya Griesbach of Hopkins; mother, Inez Warren Croft of Columbia; three brothers, Ernest Croft Jr. of Columbia, Elmer Croft of Gilbert and Marvin Croft of Columbia; one sister, Camilla Chavis of Columbia; and four grandchildren. 

Virginia Simmons Behrens
Virginia Simmons Behrens, 55, of Williston, died Jan. 22, 2002 in Milwaukee, Wis. 
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Williston United Methodist Church, with burial in the Williston Cemetery. Folk Funeral Home of Williston was in charge of arrangements. 
Mrs. Behrens was born May 13, 1946 in Wilmington, N.C. She was the daughter of Leo and Iris Brunjes Simmons. She was an educator. 
Survivors are her husband, Harry J. A. Behrens; parents, Leo and Iris Brunjes Simmons of Williston; one daughter, Katharina Behrens of Milwaukee, Wis.; two sons, Karl Behrens of Milwaukee and Harry Behrens Jr. of Macon, Ga.; one sister, Dr. Rebecca S. Weathersby of Chesterfield; and one brother, Dr. L. Ben Simmons of Wilmington, Del. 

Alexander Flowers
Alexander Flowers, 19, of Fairfax, died May 13, 2002 
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. May 18 at Marion F. Riley Sr. Memorial Chapel of Fairfax, with burial in the First Thankful Church Cemetery in Estill. The Rev. Andre Lofton officiated. M. F. Riley Funeral Home of Fairfax was in charge of arrangements. 
Mr. Flowers was born Jan. 11, 1983 in Hampton County. He was the son of Elizabeth Flowers and the late William Ruth. He was educated in the Allendale County school system. 
Survivors are his mother, Elizabeth Flowers of Fairfax; maternal grandmother, Neather Flowers of Fairfax; paternal grandmother, Richardean Early of Gifford. 

Mary Alice Ward
Mary Alice Ward, 90, of Barnwell, died May 19, 2002 in the Oak View Nursing Home in Summerville, Ga. 
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. May 24, in the Barnwell County Memory Gardens. The Rev. Posey Belcher officiated. Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of arrangements. 
Mrs. Ward was born in Cartersville, Ga. She was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Martha Alice Tolson Fountain. She was a member of Grace Community Church, the Barnwell Garden Club and had worked for a number of years for B. C. Moores' Department Store of Barnwell. 
Survivors are four sons and daughters-in-law, Charles R. and Linda Ward of Summerton, Rudolph E. and Marion Ward Jr. of Martinez, Ga., Robert D. and Nancy Ward of Trion, Ga. and Richard H. and Pam Ward of Blackville; two brothers, Edison Fountain of Lynch Burg and Carl Fountain of Lamar; one sister, Doris Carter of Cartesville; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. 
Memorials may be made to The Grace Community Mission Fund, c/o Grace Community Church. 

Kenneth Hugh Long
Kenneth "Kenny" Hugh Long, 40, of Barnwell, died May 21, 2002. 
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. May 24 at Trinity Baptist Church, with burial in the Barnwell County Memory Gardens. The Revs. Rommie Martin, Harry Warren and Dr. Kenneth Catoe officiated. Dyches Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of arrangements. 
Mr. Long was born in Barnwell County. He was the son of the late Rev. James Elwyn Long and Mildred Long. He worked for American Yard Products in shipping for 10 years. He was a mason of the Hilda Lodge 426, member of the Bethel Baptist Church and served in the National Guard Armory. 
Survivors are one son, Kenneth "Ken" Long of Barnwell; one sister, Joye Newsome; one brother, Ronnie Newsome of Barnwell; grandmother, Lila Still of Barnwell and his stepmother, Helen Long of Barnwell. 

Johnnie Lee Heyward
Johnnie Lee "Piano" Heyward, 52, of Fairfax, died May 17, 2002. 
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. May 23 at Jackson Branch Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Wesley Williams officiated. M. F. Riley's Funeral Home of Fairfax was in charge of arrangements. 
Mr. Heyward was born July 4, 1949 in Allendale County. He was the son of Adell Bryant and the late James Heyward. He was an employee of Devore's Construction in Fairfax. He was predeceased by one brother, James Heyward Jr. 
Survivors are five sons, Terold T. Heyward and Anthony Williams of Brooklyn, N.Y., Dawn L. Heyward and Tyrone Heyward of Fairfax and Carlos Heyward of Columbia; two daughters, Pamela Heyward and Kimberly Heyward, both of Fairfax; mother, Adell Bryant of Fairfax; three sisters and brother-in-law, Martha Heyward and Mary and Dave Robinson, all of Fairfax and Estella Johnson of Miami, Fla.; three brothers and sister-in-law, John H. Bryant and Jackie Bryant, both of Fairfax and Henry and Elizabeth Bryant II of Augusta, Ga.; father-in-law, Dessie Rollins Sr. of Allendale; and 10 grandchildren. 

Peggy Oliver
Peggy Oliver, 77, of Williston, died May 21, 2002. 
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. May 24 at The Folk Funeral Home Chapel in Williston, with burial in the Williston Cemetery. Folk Funeral Home of Williston was in charge of arrangements. 
Mrs. Oliver was born in Union County. She was the daughter of the late John Patrick and Sommer Trantham Brown Sr. She was a member of Winfield Heights Baptist Church and former Sunday School teacher. She was a published poet and homemaker. 
Survivors are her husband, A. Gene Oliver of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Lawana and Bruce Hinton of Anderson; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ken and Deborah Oliver of Columbia, Bruce and Kim Oliver of Jacksonville, N.C. and Darryl and Debbie Oliver of Williston; one sister, Ola Johnson of Monroe, N.C.; two brothers, John P. Brown Jr. and Roy Lloyd, both of Union; 10 grandchildren, Jason Oliver, Jeremy Oliver, Chelsea Oliver, Denise Davis, Lance Oliver, La'La Westall, Chip and Brent Oliver, Nikki and Amy Countys; and four great-grandchildren, Daphne and Trey Oliver, Haley Westall and Burke Hinton. 

William L. Hammond
William L. Hammond, 52, of Barnwell, died May 15, 2002 at the V.A. Medical Center in Augusta, Ga. 
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. May 21 at St. Paul Baptist Church in Snelling, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. John Young officiated. The Lebby Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of arrangements. 
Mr. Hammond was born Dec. 15, 1949 in Barnwell County. He was the son of Ethel Lee Ford Hammond and the late Jeremiah Hammond. He was educated in Jersey City public schools. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was employed with Hudson County Schools of Technology in Union City, N.J. 
Survivors are his wife, Connie L. Hammond of Barnwell; one son, William K. Hammond of Barnwell; one daughter, Shanique S. Hammond of Barnwell; mother, Ethel Lee Ford Hammond of Barnwell; one brother, Michael Hammond of Barnwell; one sister, Helen Hammond of Barnwell; and two brothers-in-law, Ronald Smith Jr. of Augusta, Ga. and James A. Browne of Piscataway, N. J. 

The Rev. James Wayne Creech Sr.
The Rev. James "Jimmy" Wayne Creech Sr., 57, of Wallace, N.C., died Sept. 7, 2002 at his residence. 
Funeral services were held at 6 p.m. Sept. 9 at Poston Baptist Church in Wallace. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Sept. 10 in the Blackville Cemetery. The Rev. Roy Parker officiated. Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home in Wallace was in charge of arrangements.

Lucius M. Willis Jr., of Denmark, died Sept. 1, 2002. 
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sept. 3 at Bethel Park United Methodist Church, with burial in the Denmark Cemetery. The Revs. Blaine Hudson and Andy Hunter officiated. Mercer Funeral Home in Denmark was in charge of arrangements.

Sidney Dee Everett, 65, formerly of Allendale, died Aug. 21, 2002 at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn. 
Funeral services were held Aug. 24 at W. I. Wilson Chapel in Rainoville, Ala., with burial in Town Creek Church Cemetery. W.T. Wilson Funeral Chapel in Rainsville, Ala. was in charge of arrangements.

Mildred Collins Slater
Mildred Collins Slater, 81, of Texas, died Aug. 28, 2002 at Graham Oaks Care Center in Graham, Texas. 
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 30 in the First Baptist Church of Graham, with burial in the Red Top Cemetery in Young County, Texas. The Revs. James C. Hill and Johnny Barrett officiated. 

Alfonso Coleman
Alfonso Coleman, 42, of Williston, died Sept. 1, 2002 in the Barnwell County Hospital. 
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sept. 5 at the St. Peter Baptist Church in Elko, with burial in Old St. Peter Church Cemetery in Elko. The Revs. A. C. Settles and Norman O'Neal officiated. Jenkins Memorial Chapel, Inc. in Elko was in charge of arrangements.

Dora Cohen Frasier
Dora Cohen Frasier, 83, of Brooklyn, N.Y., formerly of Fairfax, died Aug. 25, 2002 in St. Mary's Catholic Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y. 
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Aug. 31 at Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church in Fairfax, with burial in Jackson Branch Church Cemetery in Brunson. The Rev. Benjamin Burison Jr. officiated. M.F. Riley's Funeral Home of Fairfax was in charge of arrangements.

Murray Cecil Weeks, 87, of Springfield, died Sept. 2, 2002 at the Mattie C. Hall Health Care Facility in Aiken.

Twins Hunter David and Harlee David Rudd, of Spring Lake, N.C. died Sept. 4, 2002 at the Aiken Regional Medical Center.
