Lloyd Edward "Lucky" Padgett, 47, of Blackville, died Aug. 5, 2001. 
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. in the Folk Funeral Home Chapel. Folk Funeral Home in Williston was in charge of arrangements. 
Mr. Padgett was born in Bamberg. He was the son of Reba Axson Crowl and the late Floyd Carlton Padgett. He owned and operated Lucky's Barber Shop in Blackville and Padgett Mobile Home Services. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines, having served during the Vietnam War. 
Survivors are his wife, Elizabeth M. Padgett of Blackville; mother and stepfather, Reba and Bobby Crowl of Barnwell; two daughters, Laura Jackson and Rolanda Carter, both of Barnwell; two sons, Norman and L.M. Padgett, both of Blackville; and six grandchildren. 

Ethel Crosby Gooding
Ethel Crosby Gooding, 82, of Fairfax, died July 29, 2001 in the Allendale County Hospital after an extended illness. 
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. July 31 in the Chapel of Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home, with burial in Sandy Run Cemetery near Hampton. Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home of Allendale was in charge of arrangements. 
Mrs. Crosby was born May 16, 1919 in Hampton County. She was the daughter of the late Willie Crosby and Nancy Cook Crosby. She was predeceased by two sons, William Gooding and Telmac Gooding Jr. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fairfax. 
Survivors are one son, Kenneth Gooding of West Columbia; four daughters, Linda Plumbley of Fairfax, Nancy Chesser of Barnwell, Hazel Mathis of Allendale, and Lucille Weathers of Moncks Corner; one sister, Sally Wilson of Lexington; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. 

Sarah W. Ready
Sarah W. Ready, 94, of Allendale, died July 24, 2001 in the Orangeburg Regional Medical Center. 
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. July 26 in the First Baptist Church of Allendale, with burial in Swallow Savannah Cemetery. Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home of Allendale was in charge of arrangements. 
Mrs. Ready was born May 12, 1907 in Allendale County. She was the daughter of John B. Williams and Elizabeth Bennett Williams. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Allendale and active in the Women's Missionary Union and the Mary Keel Sunday School Class. 
Survivors are one son, William T. "Billy" Ready of Allendale; two daughters and son-in-law, Ruby and Lester B. Till of Orangeburg and Mary R. Ayers of Piedmont; two sisters, Leona W. Ready of Blythe, Ga. and Ruth W. Dyches of Mt. Pleasant; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. 

H. Baldwin Kearse
H. Baldwin Kearse, 90, of Fairfax, died July 29, 2001 at his residence. 
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. July 31 at the chapel of Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home, with burial in the Fairfax Cemetery. Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home of Allendale was in charge of arrangements. 
Mr. Kearse was born Dec. 10, 1910 in Olar. He was the son of Herbert Kearse. He was a retired lumber grader at Kearse manufacturing. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fairfax. 
Survivors are his wife, Evelyn Knopf Kearse; one daughter, Joanne Phillips of Hampton; one son, William Ayers of Fairfax; one brother, Cecil Kearse of Charleston; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. 

Nora Lee Charlton
Nora Lee Charlton, 61, of Groton, died July 26, 2001 in the Allendale County Hospital. 
Funeral services were held July 28 at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Groton, with burial in the Joint Stock Cemetery in Groton. The Rev. Perkins Farmer officiated. Riley's Funeral Home Hampton Chapel Inc. in Hampton was in charge of arrangements. 
Mrs. Charlton was born Aug. 15, 1939 in Allendale County. She was the daughter of the late Roosevelt Taylor Sr. and Sarah Williams Taylor. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. She was a 1959 graduate of Fairfax Training School. She was a member of the Guiding Light Chapter No. 285 Order of Eastern Star. 
Survivors are her husband, Tucker Charlton of the home; mother, Sarah Williams Taylor of Groton; one daughter, Tyre Charlton of Barton; two sons, Eric Charlton of Allendale and Tucker Charlton Jr. of Barton; six sisters, Maybell Wright of Luray, Frances Taylor of Groton, Martha Dixson of Baltimore, Md., Etha Woods of Gifford, Mary Grant of New Jersey, Ms. and Jessie Taylor of New York; four brothers, Roosevelt Taylor of Gifford, Jimmy Taylor of Estill, Bobby Taylor and Joseph Taylor, both of Groton; and four grandchildren. 

Maxwell Youmans
Maxwell Youmans, 96, of Charlotte, N.C., died July 31, 2001. 
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Aug. 2 at Durham Memorial Baptist Church, with burial in the Fairfax Cemetery. The Rev. Phil Lataa and Dr. Bearden officiated. McEwen Funeral and Cremation Service in Charlotte was in charge of arrangements. 
Mr. Youmans was born Oct. 18, 1904 in Fairfax. He was the son of the late Lula Lewis Youmans and Oliver Youmans. He was a member of Durham Memorial Baptist Church where he served as deacon, trustee, Men's Bible class, the senior adult choir and other committees. He was a 1925 graduate of Clemson University and member of the IPTAY Club. He was employed by Sealtest Dairy as plant manager and after retirement traveled as a consultant. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Corrie Julia Smith Youmans; their daughter, Doris Elizabeth Youmans Middlebrooks and four brothers, Charlie, Albert, Lewis, and O.J. Jr. 
Survivors are his wife, Elsie Brunson; and step grandson, Rusty Middlebrooks. 

Wendell D. Arbogast
Wendell D. Arbogast, 48, of Barnwell, died July 30, 2001 in Canton, Ohio. 
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Aug. 3 in Mole Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Boiling Springs Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of arrangements. 
Mr. Arbogast was born in Allendale County. He was the son of the late Edward and Kathrine Gantt Abrogast. He worked in telecommunications as a teacher and former employee of Bell South. 
Survivors are his wife, Julie Ward Arbogast of Barnwell; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Catrina Arbogast of Barnwell; one daughter and son-in-law, Amy and David McCoy of Barnwell; one brother, Roy Arbogast of Martinez, Ga.; and two grandsons, Alex and Brian McCoy of Barnwell. 

Ethel O'Neal Frazier Tracey
Ethel O'Neal Frazier Tracey, 78, of Barnwell, died July 18, 2001 in Orangeburg. 
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. July 21, at Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery. Mold Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of arrangements. 
Ms. Tracey was the widow of William Tracey. She was a native off Wheeling, W. Va. She was predeceased by a son, Larry Donley. 
Survivors are four daughters, Cindy Morris of Barnwell, Sherry D. Tracey of Aiken, Lisa Seabrook of Barnwell and Linda Hightower of High Point, N.C.; 16 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. 

Martha Ann Abigail Sanders Still
Martha Ann Abigail Sanders Still, 95, of Blackville, died Aug. 3, 2001. in Fort Myers, Fla. 
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 7 in the Folk Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in the Blackville Cemetery. Folk Funeral Home in Williston was in charge of arrangements. 
Mrs. Still was born in Blackville. She was the daughter of the late Julius H. and Abigail Hair Sanders. She was married to the late Ulysses E. Still. She was the manager of the Knits & Knots shop in the Boulevard Plaza until she was 80. 
Survivors are one daughter, Martha Ann Still Johnson of Ft. Myers, Fla.; one brother, George F. Sanders of Ft. Myers, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. Hayden Doty of Fort Myers, Fla., Mrs. John C. Williams of Ocala, Fla. and Sophie S. Fisher of Jacksonville, Fla.; five grandchildren, William Alexander and Robin Johnson of North Carolina, Charles David and Kathryn Johnson of Idaho, and Stephen E. Johnson of Ft. Myers, Fla.; and three great-grandchildren, Joseph D., Hannah E. and Rebecca J. Johnson, all of North Carolina.

Alex McCormick Bacon
Infant Alex McCormick Bacon, of Barnwell, died Aug. 3, 2001 in the Orangeburg Regional Medical Center. 
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Reach Out Ministries Church Cemetery. Folk Funeral Home in Williston was in charge of arrangements. 
Infant Bacon was born Aug. 3, 2001. He was the son of Adam Wesley Bacon and April Margie McCormick. 
Survivors are his parents, Adam Wesley Bacon and April Margie McCormick; maternal grandparents, Don and Robin Still McCormick; maternal great-grandparents, Julius and Margie McCormick, Lucille Fail and Redden and Iris Still; paternal grandparents, Thomas and Christina Lim Bacon; and paternal great-grandmother, Mattie Bacon. 

George Herbert Hoover
George Herbert Hoover, 79, of Blackville, died Nov. 18, 2001. 
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Folk Funeral Home Chapel in Williston, with burial in the Blackville Cemetery. Folk Funeral Home of Williston was in charge of arrangements. 
Mr. Hoover was born in Barnwell County. He was the son of the late Angus Hoover and Annie Hoover Hair. He was a self-employed carpenter and painter. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, the European Theater. He was a member of Double Pond Baptist Church. 
Survivors are his wife, Lois Owens Hoover of the home; two daughters, Lynda H. Stevenson of Barnwell and Carol H. Brunson of Columbia; one brother, Sam Hair Jr. of Williston; three grandchildren, Allison Still Beasley, Johnathan Ray Still and Clay Brunson; and three great-grandchildren, Jamee, James and Jackson Beasley. 

Bernice Dunbar
Bernice Dunbar, 68, of Martin, died Nov. 16, 2001 at her residence. 
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Nov. 23, at St. Mary Baptist Church, with burial in the Dunbar Family Cemetery in Millette. Cave Funeral Service, Inc. of Allendale was in charge of arrangements. 
Mrs. Dunbar was born in Allendale County. She was the daughter of the late Leroy and Lottie D. Dunbar.  
Survivors are one son, Thomas Dunbar of Washington, D.C.; one daughter, Mary Hay of Hollywood, Fla.; five sisters, Virginia Williams, Inez Brent, Minnie Myer, Dorothy Brooks and Mattie Griffin; two brothers, Raymond Dunbar and Carswell Dunbar; nine grandchildren; and one great grandchild. 

Sara Edna Rodall Abram
Sara Edna Rodall Abram, 56, of Allendale died Nov. 17, 2001 at the Medstar Georgetown Hospital in Washington, D.C. 
Funeral services were held at noon Nov. 24 at Macedonia CME Church in Allendale, with burial at the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery. Cave Funeral Service, Inc. of Allendale was in charge of arrangements. 
Mrs. Abram was born in Allendale. She was the daughter of the late Simon and Gertrude Glover Rodall. 
Survivors are two daughters, Tina Youmans and Lisa Wright; one son, Robert Abram; five sisters, Marian Gomillion, Sara Ann Williams, Connie Cole, Mary L. Glover and Christian Rodall; one brother, Richard Rodall; and four grandchildren. 

Eugene W. Smyly
Eugene W. Smyly, 85, of Ruffin, died Nov. 20, 2001 at Roper Hospital in Charleston. 
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Nov. 23 at the Chapel of the Fred Parker Funeral Home in Walterboro, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The Revs. Ed Stiltz and David Cox officiated. 
Mr. Smyly was born Jan. 10, 1916 in Ruffin. He was the son of the late Charles Stephens Smyly and Phoebie Williams Smyly. He was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church and a former member of the Official Board. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals. 
Survivors are his wife, Mary G. Smyly of Ruffin; two daughters, Gloria S. Valentine of Ruffin and Donna S. Myrick of Ulmer; one brother, Richard Smyly of Barnwell; three sisters, Lenora S. Keegan and Phoebie S. Phillips, both of Walterboro and Shirley S. Lawhon of The Isle of Palms; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. 

Thomas D. Wright
Thomas D. "Tommy" Wright, 57, of Ehrhardt died Nov. 22, 2001 at his residence.  
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Nov. 24 at the First Baptist Church of Bamberg, with burial in the Bamberg Memory Gardens. The Revs. David Pohto and Perry Malphrus officiated. Mercer Funeral Home of Denmark was in charge of arrangements. 
Mr. Wright was born in Denmark. He was the son of the late Julian B. Wright and Almina Bishop Wright. He was a graduate of Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School and attended Orangeburg-Calhoun Tech. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bamberg. He was the owner and operator of Colonial Cleaners in Denmark and Barnwell. 
Survivors are his wife, Barbra Ayer Wright of Ehrhardt; one son, Clayton Wright of Bamberg; three sisters, Patricia W. Chitty of Denmark, Jane W. Utsey of Norway and Elaine W. Haigler of Cameron; and one grandchild, Kevin Christopher Wright of Bamberg. 

Miriam Annette Lake Burckhalter
Miriam Annette Lake Burckhalter, 67, of Aiken, died Nov. 21, 2001. 
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Nov. 24 at Barnwell Memorial Park Cemetery. Folk Funeral Home of Williston was in charge of arrangements. 
Mrs. Burckhalter was born in Old Dunbarton. She was the daughter of the late Julian Emil and Hazel Winegar Lake. She was a seamstress at the Williston Manufacturing Company. She was a member of Elko Baptist Church, former Sunday School teacher, piano player and member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class. She was married to the late Josh O'Neal "Berky" Burckhalter. She was predeceased by a son, Butch Burckhalter. 
Survivors are one son, Tony O'Neal Burckhalter of Aiken; one sister, Sybil Franklin of Jackson, and one grandchild, Dillon Burckhalter.

Phillip Andrew Sanders
Phillip Andrew Sanders, 32, of Williston, died Nov. 22, 2001. 
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. at Folk Funeral Home Chapel in Williston. Folk Funeral Home of Williston was in charge of the arrangements. 
Mr. Sanders was born in Jacksonville, Fla. He was the son of Albert David and Barbara Ann Byrd Sanders. He was a network engineer for Rands Stad in Atlanta, Ga. and a Navy veteran who served during the Gulf War. 
Survivors are his parents, Albert David Sanders of Windsor and Barbara Ann Byrd Sanders of North Vernon, Ind.; two sisters, Tina Miller of Brunswick, Ga. and Cheri Ellison of Miami, Fla.; and four brothers, Dylan Sanders of Miami, Fla., John Sanders of Cleveland, Tenn, Chuck Sanders of Dexter, Mich. and Scott Everroad of North Vernon, Ind. 

Willie A. Renew
Willie A. Renew, 72, of Barnwell, died Nov. 22, 2001 in the Barnwell County Hospital. 
Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m. Nov. 24 at the Calvary Baptist Church. Burial was in the Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery. The Revs. Byron Edens and Eddie Jenkins officiated. Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of arrangements. 
Mr. Renew was the son of the late Crimmins and Carry Beasley Renew. He was a retired employee of Shuron, Inc. and an employee of the Green Dollar Pawn Shop. 
Survivors are his wife, Elizabeth "Beth" Renew of Barnwell; two daughters, Sherry Morgan and Lisa Cribb of Barnwell; two sons, Billy Renew of Martinez, Ga. and Russell Renew of Kingsland, Ga.; two sisters, Lois Carson and Marlene Holden of Barnwell; two brothers, Shellie Renew and Odell Renew of Barnwell; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.  

Antonio Bunicontra
Antonio Bunicontra, 71, of Blackville, died Nov. 23, 2001. 
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Nov. 26 at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Barnwell, with burial in the Blackville Cemetery. Folk Funeral Home of Williston was in charge of arrangements. 
Mr. Bunicontra was born in Netcong, N.J. He was the son of the late Joseph and Grace Sorua Bunnicant. He was a carpenter with the Morrison Machine Shop in Paterson, N.J. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Post 1261, Schohaire, N.Y. 
Survivors are his wife, Naomi Yoder Bunicontra of the home; one daughter, Angela Martin of Italy; one son, Anthony Bunicontra of Italy; two sisters, Grace Trimmer of Dover, N.J. and Mary Lou Miller of Port Charlotte, Fla.; two brothers, Louis and Johnny Bunnicant of Cover, N.J.; and two grandchildren.  

Aileen Zorn Williamson
Aileen Zorn Williamson, 80, of Barnwell, died Nov. 23, 2001 at her residence. 
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Nov. 25 at the Friendship Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. The Revs. Henry Propst and John Nixon officiated. Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of arrangements. 
Mrs. Williamson was the daughter of the late Joe H. and Aileen Padgett Zorn. She was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church She was a retired employee of the Manhatten Co. of Charleston. She was married to the late Joe L. Williamson. She was predeceased by one sister, Kitty Severson and two brothers, Cecil B. and John Gary Zorn. 
Survivors are one sister, Fairy B. Priester of Charleston; and one brother, Col. Joe H. Zorn Jr. of Barnwell. 

Leola Johnson Brown
Leola Johnson Brown, 94, of Allendale, died Nov. 22, 2001 at the Colleton County Medical Center in Walterboro, following a brief illness. 
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 27 at Tabernacle Baptist Church of Blackville, with burial in Hope Memorial Park in Barnwell. The Revs. Herman Wallace and Leon Scott officiated. Green's Funeral Home in Blackville was in charge of arrangements. 
Mrs. Brown was born March 5, 1907 in Barnwell County. She was the daughter of the late Andrew Johnson and the late Elizabeth Hutto. She was a retired teacher. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, worked in the Sunday School and served as Deaconess, and later she was appointed as Mother of the Church. 
Survivors are one daughter and son-in-law, Annette and Eugene Creech of the home; one stepdaughter, Sarah Morgan of New York, N.Y.; one granddaughter, Antoinette Creech of Allendale; one adopted grandson and granddaughter-in-law, David and Letta Marcellous of Washington, D.C. 

Doris Jean Barker Kearse
Doris Jean Barker Kearse, 40, of Allendale, died Nov. 21, 2001 at the Palmetto Baptist Hospital in Columbia. 
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Nov. 27 at Mt. Hope Baptist Church in Martin, with burial in Miller Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery. Cave Funeral Service, Inc. was in charge of arrangements. 
Mrs. Kearse was born in Allendale County. She was the daughter of Ruthie Mae Price Barker and Leroy Barker. She was a member of Mt. Hope Baptist Church. 
Survivors are her husband, Philip Kearse of Allendale; parents, Ruthie Mae Price Barker of Allendale and Leroy Barker of Far Rockaway, N.Y.; one daughter, La Rainia Carter; one son, Dedrick Carter; four sisters, Carolene Barker, Elaine Garvin, Stacy Barker and Nyla Barker; and two grandchildren. 

Ellen Chisolm
Ellen Chisolm, 72, of Allendale, died Nov. 16, 2001 at Colleton Regional Medical Center in Walterboro. 
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Nov. 24 at Paul Chapel Baptist Church in Ulmer, with burial in Priester Cemetery in Ulmer. The Rev. James Jackson officiated. Riley's Funeral Home-Hampton Chapel, Inc. was in charge of arrangements. 
Mrs. Chisolm was born March 28, 1929 in Allendale County. She was the daughter of the late George and Virginia Breeland Chisolm. She was a member of Paul Chapel Baptist Church. 
Survivors are three daughters, Flossie Patterson of Brooklyn, N.Y., Johnnie Owens and Georgia Conners of Allendale; three sons, Charles Patterson of Leesburg, Fla., Ernest Patterson and John Henry Patterson of Barnwell; five sisters, Mattie Loadholt, Lizzie Chisolm and Sarah Hammonds of Allendale, Alice Patterson of Ulmer and Gladys Patterson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 25 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. 

Joe Ellis Jr.
Joe Ellis Jr., 54, of Odessa, Texas, formerly of Sycamore, died Oct. 20, 2001 at the Odessa Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, Texas. 
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Nov. 24 at Hoover Cemetery in Ulmer. The Rev. Henry Creech officiated. Riley's Funeral Home-Hampton Chapel, Inc. was in charge of arrangements. 
Mr. Ellis was born June 23, 1947 in Allendale County. He was the son of Lillie Clayton Ellis and the late Ben Joe Ellis Sr. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Ulmer. He was a 1966 graduate of Fairfax Training School and obtained a Bachelors of Science in History with a minor in physical education from Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas. 
Survivors are two daughters, Valerie Molock of Philadelphia, Pa. and Natalie Ellis of Odessa, Texas; four sons, Cornelius Riley of Orangeburg, Mark, Joe and Jafari Ellis, all of Odessa, Texas; mother, Lillie Clayton Ellis of Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Rena Davis of Tribley and Joanne Lee of Tampa, Fla.; aunt, Eva Mae Williams of Sycamore; and seven grandchildren. 

Rosa Lee Smith
Rosa Lee Smith, 77, of Barnwell, died Nov. 8, 2001 in the Barnwell County Hospital. 
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Nov. 15 at Second Baptist Church in Barnwell, with burial in Bethlehem Baptist Church in Barnwell. The Rev. Isaiah Odom officiated. The Lebby Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. 
Mrs. Smith was born Dec. 3, 1923 in Barnwell County. She was the daughter of the late Anna Badger and the late Jane Pinckney. She was married to the late Lester Smith. She was preceded in death by one son, Leon Smith. She was educated at Butler Elementary and high schools. She was a part-time domestic worker and also was employed as a care taker for disabled persons. 
Survivors are three sons and daughters-in-law, Freddie L. and Annette Smith, Willie L. and Magdalene Smith of Barnwell and Grover C. and Gloria Smith of Charleston; four daughters and son-in-law, Annette S. Frederick, Marilyn and Johnny Smith of Barnwell, Eleanor Smith of Queens, N.Y. and Josephine Smith of Columbia; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
