Catherine E. Earley
MAHANOY CITY - Catherine E. Earley, 87, of 931 W. Centre St., Mahanoy City, died at 11:16 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, Pottsville. Born Jan. 22, 1914, in Mahanoy City, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Catherine (Knarr) Downey. Her husband, Martin Earley, preceded her in death. Surviving are: children, Catherine Schultz, Philadelphia, Helen Lodanosky, Lewistown, Margaret Mack, Pottsville, Martina Lorent, New Boston, and Mary Earley, Lansdale; a brother, Charles Downey, Upper Darby; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Vincent Lorent and a brother, Charles Downey. She was a 1932 graduate of Mahanoy City High School and a 1934 graduate of West Chester Normal School. She was a retired teacher, who previously taught at Mahanoy Township and Mahanoy City schools. She was a member of St. Canicus Church, Mahanoy City and the Catholic Daughters of America-Court Kateri 1085. Services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the James Haughney Funeral Home, 101 E. Mahanoy St., Mahanoy City, with Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Canicus Church. Interment will be in St. Canicus Cemetery. Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Earl L. Eaton
EAST WATERFORD - Earl L. Eaton, 68, of East Waterford, died at 11:36 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born Aug. 3, 1932, in East Waterford, he was the son of the late Samuel and Annabelle (Hampton) Eaton. His wife, Joyce (Clark) Eaton, survives. Also surviving are: a son, Samuel L. Eaton, East Waterford; three sisters, Inez Fry, Mary Lou Lorenz and Dorothy Lehman, all of Thompsontown; and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by two brothers, H. Dale Eaton and Clyde Eaton. He served in the United States Army from 1953-1955. He retired from the quality control department of Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg in 1987. He also owned and operated the Village Antiques store in East Waterford. He was a member of Union Lodge 324 F&AM, Mifflintown; the Harrisburg Consistory A.A.S.R.; the Lewistown Chapter R.A.M.; the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Juniata Valley Forest 88; the American Legion Post 0230, Dry Run; and was a charter member of the Tuscarora Valley Heritage Days Association. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the South Juniata Baptist Church, Honey Grove, with Pastor Dennis R. Thompson Jr. officiating. Interment will be in the East Waterford Cemetery. Friends may call noon-9 p.m. today at the Henry Funeral Home, Honey Grove, where the family will be present from 7-9 p.m. Masonic services will be held at 8:45 p.m. The family will provide all flowers. Inez P. Eberts
LEWISTOWN - Inez P. Eberts, 89, a resident of Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, Lewistown, formerly of 820 E. Walnut St., Lewistown, died at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at the nursing home. Born Dec. 27, 1911, in Tyrone, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mary (Milton) Gross. Her husband, Donald B. Eberts, died Aug. 8, 1990. She is survived by daughters, Joan Knepp, 520 Harvard St., Lewistown, and Mrs. Richard (Barbara) Mowery, McVeytown; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by one brother and one sister. She was employed by the American Viscose Corporation. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewistown. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Gerald A. Krum officiating. Private interment will be held in Juniata Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Evelyn F. 'Peg' Ebright
TOPTON - Evelyn F. "Peg" Ebright, 82, of the Lutheran Home at Topton, formerly of Swatara Township, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at the home. Born Nov. 10, 1918, in Mt. Ranier, MD, on November 10, 1918, she was the daughter of the late H. Reed and Annie (Brown) Fry. Her husband, Henry A. Ebright, whom she married March 15, 1919, survives. Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Norman J. (Peggy A.) Manley of Allentown and a son, Paul A. Ebright of Hummelstown; four grandchildren, Todd B. Manley and Luke A. Manley, both of Allentown, and Brian A. Ebright and Sarah E. Ebright, both of Hummelstown. She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Hope A. Manley. She was a 1936 graduate of Mifflintown High School and a graduate of the former Shippensburg Teacher's College. She retired as an elementary school teacher from Central Dauphin School District and was a former teacher for the Juniata County School District. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Harrisburg, and its Altar Guild. She enjoyed traveling and playing golf. Her service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Chapel of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 3700 Rutherford St., Harrisburg, with the Rev. Kester T. Sobers III, her pastor, officiating. Interment will be held at 4 p.m. Friday in the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown. Friends may call 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the church. Charles L. 'Chick' Eby Sr.
MIFFLINTOWN - Charles L. "Chick" Eby Sr., 88, of Pine Creek Personal Care Home, Mifflintown RR1, formerly of Quigley Heights, Mifflintown, died at 9:20 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born Jan. 4, 1913, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Herman J. and Mary J. (Bingaman) Eby. His wife, Christiana R. (Derr) Eby, died April 2, 1985. Surviving are: children, C. Leonard Eby Jr., 617 Freedom Ave., Burnham, James E. Eby, Old Route 22, Mifflintown, Richard M. Eby, Second Street, Yeagertown, and Maryann Eby, Harrisburg; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. He was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. He worked in the steam plant at Standard Steel, Burnham for 26 years, retiring in 1978. From 1952-1982, he was also employed at Heller's Funeral Homes at Woodlawn and Burnham. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown and St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewistown. He was also a member of the United Steelworker's No. 1940; a life member of the Fame, City, Hook and Ladder and Brooklyn Fire Companies; and a charter member of Cornbinders of Fame Fire Company. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. William S. Esborn officiating. Ralph Eugene Eckley
ROGERSVILLE, AL - Ralph Eugene Eckley, 85, of Rogersville, AL, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at his residence. Born Dec. 12, 1916, in Spruce Creek, he was the son of the late John and Lottie H. (Belles) Eckley. His wife, Bridgett Erna Eckley, survives. Also surviving are: children, Michael George Eckley, Huntsville, AL, and Monica Lottie (Eckley) Mauk, Huntsville, AL; brothers, Paul Eckley, Pittsburgh, Elwood Eckley, Pittsburgh, Homer Eckley, Lewistown; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Eileen, and seven brothers, John, Charles, Earnest, George, James, Warren and Robert. He was a graduate of Milroy High School. In 1940 he enlisted in the N.G. Service Battery 939 PA BN, Lewistown, and served in five campaigns, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arne, Rhineland, Northern Appennines and Central Europe, where he received the Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Croix De Guerre with Silver Gilt, Star American Defense Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with five Bronze Stars and the Victor Medal. He was discharged from the Army after 21 years having served from 1940-1961. He worked for the civil service from 1962-1977, and later worked at the Huntsville Missile Center. He was also the catcher for the all nine Eckley brothers baseball team in the late 30's. His graveside service and will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA., with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Ruth M. Eckley
LEWISTOWN - Ruth M. Eckley, 88, of 15 Ridge Road, Lewistown, died at 1:13 p.m. Thursday, April 12, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, 163 Summit Drive, Lewistown. Born April 6, 1913 in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Wilmont and Alice (Collier) Corson. Her husband Charles T. Eckley preceded her in death in 1984. Surviving are: a son, Charles R. Renninger, 15 Ridge Road, Lewistown; brothers and a sister, Martha Albright, Charles Corson, David Corson and Bill Corson, all of Lewistown, and William Corson, Alfarata; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lorma Herbster Wagner, in 1990 and by three granddaughters. She was a homemaker and earlier in life was employed in the reeling department of the American Viscose Corp. She was a Presbyterian by faith. She was a member of the Lewistown Moose Lodge Auxiliary. Her funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hoenstine Funeral Home, Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Jacob T. Traxler officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery. Harry E. Elder
MIFFLIN - Harry E. Elder, 87, of Foster St., Mifflin, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Hershey Medical Center. Born Feb. 17, 1914, in Mifflin, he was a son of the late Harry O. and Elizabeth Elder. His wife, Sarah A. (Ritter) Elder, preceded him in death on August 27, 1972. Surviving are: two sons, Harry C. Elder, Houtzdale, and Donald Elder, Mechanicsburg, a daughter, Eileen Heller, Milton, three stepsons, Donnie Paul Bailey, James Bailey and Clyde Bailey, all of New Jersey, and a stepdaughter, Shirley Bailey, New Jersey; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in WW II. He was a iron worker on construction working with Local 404 and a member of Brooklyn Hose Company, Lewistown. He enjoyed model trains, collecting coins and baseball cards, and bred collector pigeons. His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, with the REv. David Cook officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Mifflintown, where military honors will be provided by the Juniata County Veterans Council. Velma Ruth Ellingsworth
Velma Ruth Ellingsworth, 80, of Seanor, died Oct. 17, 2001. Born Sept. 12, 1921,in Spruce Hill Township, Juniata County, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Myrtle (Smith) Brackbill. Her husband of 55 years, Lewis, survives. Also surviving are: children, Mrs. Marlin (Sharon) Weber, Johnstown and James R., Shippensburg; sisters and brothers, Vera Harpster, Earl Brackbill, Elmer Brackbill, Roberta Kepner, Edna Lauver, Anna Fry, Rachael Weaver, Mildred Hendricks and Dorene Adams; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers, Albert, Raymond and George Brackbill. She was a 1943 graduate of the Lewistown Hospital School of Nursing, a retired registered nurse and an avid quilter. She was a member of the Scalp Level Trinity United Methodist Church, Windber, where her funeral service was held Oct. 20. Entombment was in the Richland Mausoleum.

Elsie Berryman Elliott
LEWISTOWN - Elsie Berryman Elliott, 83, of 4C West Spanogle Ave., Lewistown, died at 5:35 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, at Valley View Haven, Belleville. Born May 23, 1917, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Charles L. and Ruth R. (McCord) Berryman. Her husband, G. Andrew Elliott, died Oct. 29, 1965. She is survived by a brother and a sister, C. William Berryman, Lewistown and Mrs. Harvey W. (Frances) Gilbert Jr., 325 King Lane, Belleville. She was preceded in death by one sister. She graduated with honors from Lewistown High School in 1933. She was a secretary for Glick Brothers Shoes Inc., retiring in 1982. She was a member of the Holy Communion Lutheran Church, Yeagertown and the Retirees of the Church. She was also a member of the Young at Heart Group, the former Pensioneers Club and the American Association of Retired Persons. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Philip C. Tundel officiating. Interment will be in Mattawana Cemetery, McVeytown. There will be no viewing, but family will receive friends 10 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home. Jason Robert Ellis
MIDDLEBURG - Jason Robert Ellis, 26, of Middleburg RR1, died at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at Geisinger Medical Center. Born July 24, 1974, in Brockport, NY, he was the son of Edward Ellis of Middleburg RR1 and Donna Whipple, Kent, NY. He is also survived by his fiancee, Jennifer L. Knepp of Beaver Springs RR1. Also surviving are: a daughter, Mackenzie Jalynn Ellis; brother and sister, Ezra Ellis, Middleburg RR1 and Katrina Ellis, Medina, NY; maternal grandfather, Robert Fischer, Albion, NY; maternal grandmother, Rita Long, Houston, Texas; and maternal great-grandmother, Helen Porter, Elba, NY. He attended Kendall High School, Kendall, Ny. He was employed as a carpenter for Professional Builders, Middleburg. Prior to that, he had worked for Penn Lyon Homes, Selinsgrove and JBK Services, Millmont. He played pool for the Town Tavern, Middleburg in the Snyder County Pool League, for the Mifflinburg Legion in the American Legion League and for Valley House in the APA Monday Night League. He was also a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, pool, and the Keister cabin. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Adamsburg Cemetery, Beaver Springs, with the Rev. Liane Wagner officiating. MIFFLINTOWN - Kathryn N. Ellis, 92, of 410 Orange St., Mifflintown, died at 10:10 a.m. Monday, April 30, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born June 30, 1908, in Snyder County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Emma (Neimond) Watts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stewart A. Ellis Sr., on March 10, 1990. She is survived by children, Mrs. Eugene (Esther) Rhine and Roberta J. Ellis, both of Mifflintown, Ruth O'Neal, Port Royal, Mrs. Lee (Connie) Quigley, Mifflintown RR1, and Steward A. Ellis Jr., Lewistown; a grandchild, whom she raised, Kathy Huss, York; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She was the last of her immediate family and was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Arnold and one great-grandson, Todd Clark. She was a homemaker and Protestant by faith. She was an avid bingo player. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. William N. Esborn officiating. Paul R. 'Hobo Mac' Ellis
MIFFLIN - Paul R. "Hobo Mac" Ellis, 91, of Mifflin, died at 11:53 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. He was born Jan. 26, 1909, in Philadelphia. He was United States Army veteran of World War II and a Catholic by faith. His service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. John A. Rocco officiating. Interment will be in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. Viewing will be 10 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home. The Juniata County Veterans Council will accord full military burial honors.

Bernice I. Emery
CALEDONIA, NY - Bernice I. Emery, 57, of Caledonia, NY, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at her home, after a long battle with cancer. Born Aug. 11, 1943, in Mifflin County, she was the daughter of the late John and Myrtle (Fultz) Dean. Her husband, Mike Emery, preceded her in death. Surviving are: children, Mrs. Robert (Deborah) Frew and Jeremy Emery, both of Caledonia, NY, Teresa Emery, Rochester, NY and Mrs. Bryan (Michelle) Bogle, Florida; brothers, Clint Dean, Ellsworth Dean, John Dean, and Richard Dean, all of Pennsylvania; and nine grandchildren; She was preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen Ammond. She was employed at the Caledonia-Mumford School District as a bus driver. She also taught swimming lessons in Caledonia, NY, for over 20 years. She was certified by the American Red Cross in Advanced Lifesaving. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was active in the Caledonia Variety Show for many years and served on the Caledonia Recreation Board. She played Mrs. Claus for many years durġng the Home Town Holidays. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church, 3080 West Main Street, Caledonia, NY, with the Rev. Nancy Reinert officiating. Eugenia 'Mitzi' Englander
MILROY - Eugenia "Mitzi" Englander, 63, of 29 McClay St., Milroy, died at 4:20 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Lewistown Hospital. Born May 19, 1937, in New Jersey, she was the daughter of Ruth (Jennings) Montanye of Butler, NJ and the late Adolph Montanye. She is also survived by a daughter, Kelly Montanye of 29 McClay St., Milroy; brother and sister, Charles Montanye, Easton and Sharon Jennings, Port Jervis, NY; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister. She was employed as a waitress at Red's Diner. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Jacob T. Traxler officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park. There will be no viewing, but family will receive friends 1 p.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Norwood Daniel Engle
LIVERPOOL - Norwood Daniel Engle, 87, of Liverpool RR2, died at 9:35 a.m. Sunday, April 1, 2001, at the Stonebridge Health & Rehabilitation Center, Duncannon. Born July 8, 1913, in Berrysburg, he was the son of the late Norman and Lottie Mae (Keebaugh) Engle. His wife, Mildred Eleanor (Crone) Engle, whom he married April 8, 1943, died July 19, 1989. He is survived by four sons, Albert K. Engle, Robert N. Engle and Richard L. Engle, all of Liverpool RR2 and Ralph E. Engle, Millerstown RR2; a sister, Evelyn Shenk, Linglestown; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leroy Engle Sr. and Kenneth Engle. He was educated at the Edison Junior High School, Harrisburg. He was employed as a stationary engineer at the Harrisburg Steel Corporation, Harrisburg, retiring in 1975 after 37 years. He was Protestant by faith. He was a life member of the Penbrook Fire Co.; a member of the Liverpool Fire Co. & Liverpool Ambulance League; a 50+ year member of the Basset Hound Club of America; an original member, president and director of the Susquehanna Basset Hound Club; a member of the Lenape Basset Hound Club; the Patroon Basset Hound Club; the Valley Forge Basset Hound Club; and the Capital District Basset Hound Club. He was a former member of the Liverpool Lions Club and was a former Greenwood School Board director for 20 years. He enjoyed traveling, hunting and basset hounds. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the George P. Garman Funeral Home, 606 N. Front St., Liverpool, with Pastor Jerry L. Small of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Stroudsburg, officiating. LEWISTOWN - Edward J. English Sr., 69, of South Brown St., Lewistown, died at 11:07 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born June 13, 1932, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Joseph and Margaret (Cutler) English. His wife, Doris (Ruby) English, whom he married April 30, 1954, survives. Also surviving are: children, Sharon Lucci, Debra Ventimiglia and Edward J. English Jr., all of Lewistown and Steven English, Yeagertown; a sister, Barbara Knode, Harrisburg; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph English. He served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Marines, during the Korean Conflict. He worked for Standard Steel for 33 years, retiring in 1995. He was a member of Moose Lodge 143 and a life member of the Brooklyn Hose Company. The service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. John D. Erhart
John D. Erhart Sr., 67, of Ridgley Avenue, Lewistown, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin. Born Feb. 4, 1934, in Belleville, he was a son of the late John N. and Thelma (Rowles) Erhard. His wife, Betty M. (Willard) Erhart, preceded him in death on Dec. 8, 1996. "Red" Erhard and Janice "Sis" Zeiders, both of Mifflintown RR3; grandchildren, Heather Weaver, Danielle and Dustin Kirk, Travis Erhart, Mikiah Hendricks, Andrew and Nikki Wallick, Brianne, Schae, and Sierra Baumgardner, Joshua and Lindsey Erhart, Michael and Matthew Erhart; and great-grandsons, Zachary Goss and Trevor Weaver. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeffery Albert Kirk. He was employed by Norlin Warehousing, Lewistown, as a warehouse manager/trucker. He was a member of Schrader United Methodist Church, Reedsville, where he was a lay speaker and an adult Sunday school teacher. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. John N. 'Pappy' Erhard
MIFFLIN - John N. "Pappy" Erhard, 93, of the Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin HC63, formerly of Port Royal RR2, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at the nursing home. Born Dec. 3, 1907, in Centre Hall, he was a son of the late George W. and Catherine (Raymond) Erhard. His wife Thelma (Rowles) Erhard preceded him in death on June 10, 1970. Surviving are: children, John D. Erhart, Lewistown, Harry R. Erhard, Port Royal RR2, and Lee E. "Red" Erhard and Janice "Sis" Zeiders, both of Mifflintown RR3; a brother and sister, Harry Erhard, Allensville and Ruth Snyder, Yeagertown; 21 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Erhard and Robert Erhard. He was a retired farmer. He enjoyed hunting and gardening. LEWISBERRY - Mary Grace Esh, 76, of Lewisberry, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, in Emory East Side Medical Center, Snellville, Ga. Born June 5, 1924, in Mifflin County, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Florence (Harshbarger) Ziegler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Esh. She is survived by a daughter, Lori E. Fink, Snellville, Ga. and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Sue Esh. She was a member of Wyndamere Heights Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewisberry and the Hershey Chorus. Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the Wyndamere Heights Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewisberry, with the Rev. Tim Seiger, officiating. MCVEYTOWN - Orie D. Esh, 62, of 271 Kansas Road, McVeytown, died at 10:20 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at his home. Born Nov. 10, 1938, in Belleville, he was the son of the late Orie J. and Anna (Wiss) Esh. He is survived by: a son, Brian K. Esh, McVeytown; a sister, Judith E. Shawver, Milroy; five grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rhonda M. Esh, on Feb. 28, 1996. He retired in 1997 from New Holland. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Belleville, with the Rev. Rosalie N. Smith officiating. The Donald E. Richard L. Evans
DUNCANNON - Richard L. Evans, 74, of 10 Noye Rd., Duncannon, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at Harrisburg Hospital. Born March 27, 1927 in Enola, Cumberland County, he was a son of the late Isaac F. and Catherine (Burd) Evans. His wife, Shirley (Lukens) Evans survives. Also surviving are: children, Michael L. Evans, McAlisterville,Richard L. Evans, Middletown, and Theresa S. Mutzabaugh and Kathy Evans-Blauch, both of Duncannon; brothers and sisters, Thomas Evans and Frances Shaffer, both of Duncannon, Ronald Evans, Marysville, Rufus R. Evans, Macungie, Jean Sommers, Enola, and Dorothy A. Hammaker, Marysville; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a deep sea diver, and a Marine veteran of the Korean War. He was a retired employee of Conrail: Division Engineer of New Projects, and a former Duncannon police officer. He was a member and former finance officer of American Legion Post 340, Duncannon; a member of Newport Loyal Order of Moose, a former member of the Duncannon Fire Company, and a former ambulance driver. His service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Ronald Smith Funeral Home, 325 N. High St., Duncannon, with the Rev. Dale Rosenberger officia-ting. Interment, with military honors, will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Duncannon. Friends may call 10-11 a.m. Thurdsay at the funeral home. Sara E. Ewing
BEAVER SPRINGS - Sara E. Ewing, 90, formerly of Beaver Springs, died at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at Penn Lutheran Village, where she has resided since 1995. Born Feb. 19, 1910, in Spring Township, Snyder County, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Anna T. (Maurer) Benfer. Her husband, Russell E. Ewing, whom she married in 1926, died in 1977. She is survived by three nieces and three nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Elmer "Slim" Benfer. She farmed in the Beaver Springs area with her husband until his retirement in 1972. Prior to that she had worked at the former Beavertown Weaving Mill for many years. She was a member of Grace United Church of Christ Church, the Sunday school and the Ladies Guild of the church. She had also served on the church council for many years. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Beavertown Chapel of Aurand Funeral Homes, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown, with the Rev. Nancy Moyer officiating. Interment will be in Troxelville Union Cemetery. There will be no viewing.
