Daniel H. Kardos

Daniel H. Kardos, 70, of Coopersburg, died Dec. 16, 2003 at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Twp.

Born in Lower Saucon Township, he was the son of the late Frank and Jennie (Gross) Kardos.

Prior to retiring he was employed by James D. Morrissey, Inc., Philadelphia and Bethlehem Steel.

He was a life member of the Springtown Vol. Fire Co. and a member of the Silver Creek Athletic Asso., Springfield Twp.

He is survived by one sister, Ethel Seifert of Pleasant Valley, nieces and nephews.

Services were held Dec. 19.

ROBERT SPOHN 

  Funeral services were held for Robert William Spohn, 77, of Blacksmith Road, Douglassville, husband of Grace (Schwenk) Spohn, who died July 30 in ManorCare Health Services, Pottstown.

  Born in Little Oley, he worked as a dairy farmer at Haas Dairy Farm, Weavertown, for 43 years until his retirement in 1987.

  He was a life member of Amity Fire Co.

   In addition to his wife of 53 years, he is survived by two brothers, Leon Spohn of Bally and Kenneth Spohn of New Berlinville; and one sister, June Schmoyer of Gabelsville.

  He was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.

  Contributions may be made to St. Johnís Evangelical Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 45 N. Reading Ave., Boyertown, PA 19512.

  Burial was in Hill Church Cemetery, Pike Township.

  The Morrell Funeral Home, Boyertown, handled the arrangements.

 

BENEDICT P. SYGULLA

  A graveside service was held for Benedict ďBenĒ P. Sygulla, 74, of Independence, Wisc., widower of Miriam (Bitting) Sygulla, formerly of Gilbertsville, who died July 20 in Tri-County Memorial Hospital, Whitehall.

  Born in Burnside, he served in the U.S. Navy for ten years.

  He worked for Jones Motor Co., Spring City.

  Sygulla was a member of Zionís United Church of Christ, Pottstown. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

  He was also a member of the Sura-Wiersgalla American Legion Post No. 186 of Independence and the V.F.W. Post No. 10671 of Arcadia.

  Surviving are two sisters. He was also predeceased by a sister.

  The service was held in Highland Memorial Park, Pottstown.

 

RICHARD C. NAGEL

  Services were held for Richard C. Nagel, 73, husband of Helen A. (Gauger) Nagel of Gilbertsville, who died July 31 in the hospice unit of Lehigh Valley Hospital Center, near Allentown.

  Born in Boyertown, he was a 1946 graduate of Boyertown High School.

  He worked for 20 years as a route salesman for Carverís Dairy, Boyertown, and also worked for the Dana Corp., Pottstown, for 22 years.

  Nagel was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army.

  He was a member of St. Johnís Lutheran Church, 45 North Reading Ave., Boyertown, PA 19512.

  Nagel was a member of the Gilbertsville and Liberty fire companies.

  Surviving in addition to his wife is a son, Rick C. Nagel of Fleetwood; a daughter, Elizabeth A. Aston of Bechtelsville; one granddaughter, one step-grandson; and one step-great-grandson.

  Contributions may be made to the church.

  The arrangements were handled by the Catagnus Funeral Home, Boyertown.

  Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Boyertown.

 

PATRICIA ANN HEFFNER

  A memorial service was held at St. Johnís Lutheran Church, Boyertown, for Patricia Ann (Kessler) Heffner, of Humble, Texas, who died June 30.

  She was formerly of Boyertown and the widow of James R. Heffner Sr.

  Born in Wilson, she graduated from Phillipsburg High School and the Germantown Nursing School.

  Heffner was a nurse at the Pottstown Memorial Medical Center and the Norristown State Hospital.

  She is survived by two grandchildren

  She was also preceded in death by a son, James R. Heffner Jr.

JAMES HEFFNER JR.

  A memorial service was held at St. Johnís Lutheran Church, Boyertown, for James R. Heffner Jr., 45, husband of Judy Heffner, of Humble, Texas, who died June 5.

  He was formerly of Boyertown and was born in Boston, Mass.

  Heffner worked as a cable TV engineer.

  In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Matthew Heffner of Humble, Texas; and one daughter, Emily Heffner of Humble, Texas.

LAWRENCE S. ANTRIM

  A graveside Masonic service and committal service was held in Highland Memorial Park, Pottstown, for Lawrence S. Antrim, 78, of Wellsboro, Tioga County, formerly of Pottstown, who died July 30 in his home.

  Born in Pottstown, he was a building inspector and supervisor for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for more than 18 years until his retirement in 1987.

  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He was wounded on D-Day while a member of the Fifth Ranger Battalion. He received the Distinguished Unit Badge, two Overseas Service Bars, the Purple Heart, a Good Conduct Medal and the Bronze Arrowhead European African Middle Eastern Service medal with four bronze stars.

  He was a member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, the Pottstown American Legion Post, the Stichter Lodge No. 254 F&AM of Pottstown and the Rajah Temple of Reading. He was a life member of West End Fire Co.

  In addition to his wife of 56 years, he is survived by two sons, Greg Antrim of Middlebury Center, Tioga County, and Rich Antrim of Boyertown; one sister; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

  Contributions may be made to Good Shepherd United Church of Christ, 35 W. Philadelphia  Ave., Boyertown, PA 19512; or to the Asaph United Methodist Church, RD 4, Wellsboro, PA 16901.

  The arrangements were handled by the Tussey-Mosher Funeral Home, Wellsboro.

 

CATARINO ESQUIVEL

  Burial was in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio for Catarino ďBoogieĒ Esquivel, 71, formerly of Boyertown.

  Esquivel died July 30 in the Montgomery County Geriatric and Rehabilitation Center, Upper Providence.

  Born in San Antonio, Texas, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

  He is survived by three sisters, Elvira Pender Harple of Boyertown, Mary Lee Jarman of Centerville, Va., and Gloria Puente of San Antonio.

  He was predeceased by a brother.

  The arrangements were handled by the Veterans Cremation Society of Pennsylvania.

 

SUSAN M. DRIES

  Funeral services were held for Susan M. (McCormick) Dries, 47, of South Chestnut Street, Boyertown, who died August 1 in the Reading Hospital and Medical Center, West Reading.

  She was the wife of Ernest P. Dries.

  Born in Allentown, she was a daughter of Shirley (DeFiore) and Frank McCormick of Allentown.

  She and her husband owned and operated Dries Auto Service, Boyertown, since 1983.

  Dries attended William Allen High School, Allentown.

  She was a member of the Keystone Fire Co., Boyertown, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Boyertown Orioles.

  In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by two sons, Brian K. Dries of Allentown and Kevin S. Dries of Boyertown.

  Also four sisters and one granddaughter.

  Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Boyertown.

  The Catagnus Funeral Home, Boyertown, handled the arrangements.

 

ROSEMARY EGAN

  A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Columbkill Catholic Church, 200 Indian Spring Road, Boyertown for Rosemary (Sherlock) Egan, 83, of Mulbery Lane, Colebrookdale.

  She died August 2 at the Sanatoga Center, where she had been a patient since June. She was the widow of Bernard Egan.

  Born in Queens, N.Y., she was a homemaker.

  Egan was a member of St. Columbkill Catholic Church, Boyertown.

  She was also a member of the Boyertown Senior Center.

  Surviving are two sons, James Egan of Bechtelsville and Jerry Egan of Royersford; and three sisters.

  She was preceded in death by three brothers.

  A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Columbkill Catholic Church, 200 Indian Spring Road, Boyertown.

  A viewing will be held from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the church.

  Burial will be in St. Aloysius New Cemetery, Lower Pottsgrove.

  The arrangements are being handled by the Linwood W. Ott Funeral Home, Boyertown.

  

EDNA EIDLE

  Services were held for Edna M. (Moyer) Eidle, 74, of Greenhill Road, Barto, widow of Franklin S. Eidle, who died August 2 at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center.

  Born in Bechtelsville, she was a mender at the Great American Knitting Mill in Bally for many years, retiring in 1989.

  Eidle was a member of the Shepherd of the Hills United Church of Christ, Bechtelsville.

  She is survived by two daughters, Patricia A. Levan and Deborah L. Beaver, both of Barto; seven sons, Franklin Eidle Jr., Terry A. Eidle, Larry Eidle, Randy L. Eidle and Bruce A. Eidle, all of Barto, Dennis L. Eidle of Coudersport and Glenn L. Eidle of New Berlinville.

  Also two sisters, Mildred Reifsnyder of Boyertown and Betty Mackey of Bechtelsville; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

  She was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.

  Contributions may be made to Shepherd of the Hills United Church of Christ, 527 Hoffmansville Road, Bechtelsville, PA 19505.

  Burial was in Hill Church Cemetery, Pike Township.

  The arrangements were handled by the Linwood W. Ott Funeral Home, Boyertown.

 

JAMES D. REINHARD

  Funeral services were held for James D. Reinhard, 64, of Bartlet Road, Ruscombmanor Township, who died August 2 in St. Joseph Medical Center.

  He died as a result of injuries sustained from an auto accident on Hill Road, Maidencreek Township.

  He was the husband of Sandra M. (Kurtz) Reinhard.

  Born in Allentown, he had been employed 33 years as a truck driver, last working for Chemical Lehman Tank Lines, Evansville, before retiring in 1987.

  He is also survived by a son, David J., West Lawn, and by four daughters: Melanie S. (Reinhard) Riegel, Hamburg; Susan M. Reinhard, Walnuttown; and Stacy M. Reinhard and Melissa S. Reinhard, both at home.

  Also surviving are three sisters: Mary Lou (Reinhard) Keeling, Lyons; Patricia (Reinhard) Scalessi, a resident of Stabon Manor, Reading; and Loretta (Reinhard) Missimer, Walnutport, Northampton County; also five brothers: Thomas Jr. and Frederick, both of Kutztown; Charles, Fleetwood; Richard, Oley; and Raymond, Birdsboro.

  There are also seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.

  The Auman Funeral Homes, Reiffton, handled the arrangements.

  Burial was in Berks County Memorial Gardens, Maidencreek Township.

 

ALMA HALE

  Funeral services were held for Alma Mae (Landis) Hale, 90 of Willow Valley Manor, Lancaster, formerly of Baltimore and New Jersey, who died August 4 at Arbor View, Lancaster.

  She was the widow of Donald K. Hale.

  Born in Colebrookdale, she worked for the Equitable Trust Co. of Baltimore in the mortgage department for more than 20 years.

  Hale was a member of St. Paulís United Methodist Church, Lancaster, where she assisted with the churchís food distribution.

  While living in Baltimore, she taught Sunday school and was involved with the youth fellowship of her church. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

  She is survived by a sister and one brother.

  Burial was in Highland Memorial Park, Pottstown.

  The arrangements were handled by the Houck Funeral Home of Pottstown.

 

CYNTHIA L. COPPERFIELD

  Private burial was held for Cynthia L. (Hums) Copperfield, 50, of Douglass (Mont.), who died August 3 at the Pottstown Memorial Medical Center.

  Born in Pottstown, she was a daughter of Virginia M. (Moyer) Hums of Sanatoga and the late Paul F. Hums.

  Copperfield graduated from Boyertown High School in 1970.

  She worked as an aide in the baby room at the YMCA Growing Dreams in Boyertown, and also at Turkey Hill in Boyertown.

  She was a foreign exchange coordinator for the Boyertown, Pottstown and Owen J. Roberts schools districts.

  Copperfield was a member of the Boyertown YMCA.

  In addition to her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Jennifer L. Walker of New Berlinville; one son, Steven R. Schrump of Boyertown.

  Also three sisters, Sandra J. Hill of Narvon, Kathie M. Bulson of Riegelsville and Paula K. Hoffman of Boyertown; one brother, Bruce R. Hums of Sanford, N.C.; and six grandchildren.

  In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter.

  The arrangements were handled by the Catagnus Funeral Home, Boyertown.

 

JOYCE ELAINE MINNINGER

  A memorial service will be held Thursday for Joyce Elaine (Mentzer) Minninger, 72, wife of Robert W. Minninger of Maple Avenue, Boyertown, who died August 4 at the Pottstown Memorial Medical Center.

  Born in Downingtown, she was a member of St. Johnís Lutheran Church, Boyertown.

  In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Thomas L. Hatfield of Fredericksburg and Earl L. Hatfield of North Port, Fla.; one daughter, Tracy L. (Minninger) Moyer of Gilbertsville; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

  The memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Houck Funeral Home, Charlotte and Grace streets, Pottstown.

  Friends may call from 10 to 10:30 a.. at the funeral home.

KERRY ARTHUR ORTLIP

  A funeral will be held for Kerry Arthur Ortlip, 53, of Moore Drive, Gilbertsville, husband of Shirley (Fiore) Ortlip, who died August 4 in the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.

  Born in Pottstown, he was a son of Pearl Elaine (Swanger) Ortlip of Phoenixville and the late Jay Ortlip Sr.

  He worked as a correction officer at the Graterford State Correctional Institution.

  Ortlip was a member of St. Columbkill Catholic Church, Boyertown.

  He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Millsboro, Del.

  Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two sons, Joseph J. and Timothy E. Ortlip, both of Gilbertsville,

  There are also two brothers.

  Friends may call Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Devlin-Rosmos-Kepp Funeral Home, Main Street at Fourth Avenue, Phoenixville.

  Services will be at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Edward Essig officiating.

  Burial will  be in Limerick Garden of Memories.

 

LEON F. STEHMAN

  Private services with burial were held for Leon F. Stehman, 88, of Lenore Place, Whitfield, who died August 3 in Reading Hospital.

  He was the husband of Aletha J. (Sweigart) Stehman.

  Born in Oley, he was employed for more than 50 years as an optician, working 29 years  with Dr. James Van Dyke Quereau in Reading.

  He was an Air Force veteran of World War II.

  Stehman had served as president of the Hammond Organ Society.

  He is also survived by a sister, Ruth (Stehman) Shappell, Oley.

  Burial was in the Oley Cemetery.

  The Christ & Catagnus Funeral Home Inc., Oley, was in charge of the arrangements.

 

FORREST B. FRITZ

  Services will be held for Forrest B. Fritz, 83, of North Washington Street, Pottstown, husband of Nora (Dotterer) Fritz, who died August 5.

  Born in Greshville, Berks County, he was a 1937 graduate of Amity High School.

  Fritz retired from Hollenbach Home Center in 1984 and continued to work part-time until 1996. He previously worked for the former Boyertown Auto Body Works for 36 years.

  He attended Trinity EC Church, Boyertown.

  In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, David D. Fritz of Pottstown and Mark D. Fritz of London; and one granddaughter.

  Contributions may be made to Trinity EC Church, P.O. Box 541, Boyertown, PA 19512; or to a charity of the donorís choice.

  Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity E.C. Church, Sweinhart Road, Boyertown, with the Rev. Kevin S. Leibensperger, pastor, officiating.

  A viewing will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church.

  The arrangements are being handled by the Houck Funeral Home of Pottstown.

 

ROMAINE  HOFFMAN

  Services were held for Romaine ďBabeĒ Hoffman, 83, of Millville, who died August 1 in his home, while under the care of Hospice.

  He was the husband of Eleanor J. (Higgins) Hoffman for 31 years.

  Hoffman was born in Boyertown, and was a graduate of Boyertown High School class of 1937.

  He was a resident of the Vineland/Millville area since 1948.

  Hoffman was a retired insurance salesman and had worked for several local insurance agencies and retired in 1988 from the Wolf Insurance Agency. He had been employed in the insurance business for 30 years.

  He was a member of the Vineland Lions Club, Millville Rescue Squad, Pine Valley Gun Club, Roxborough Gunning Club of Philadelphia and the Blue Rock Shooting Club. He also enjoyed model trains and railroading.

  In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters: Cynthia Jane Taylor, Millville; Sandra Jean DePalma, Vineland; Elaine Martin, Elmer; two sons, John Robert Hoffman, Millville and Richard Joseph Menz, Millville.

  Also fourteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.

  Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Care of South Jersey, 2848 S. Delsea Dr., Vineland, NJ 08360.

  The Pancoast Funeral Home, Vineland, NJ., handled the arrangements.

  Burial was in the Greenwood Memorial Park, Millville, NJ.
