Alfred Laing, former Pendleton resident and son of the late Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Laing, Umatilla county pioneers died in Oakland California,
January 31. His death was caused by heart disease. Surviving are his widow,
a daughter, and two sons.

Burton McKenzie
Former Milton-Freewater resident, W. Burton McKenzie, 58, of Tacoma,
Wash., died there Monday, Jan. 21, 1985 at St. Joseph Hospital.
Funeral Services were Monday, Jan. 28 in the Munselle Rhodes Funeral
Home Chapel, Milton-Freewater, with Rev. R.V. Kilmer officiating. Burial
was in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mike Hackworm, Tom McKenzie, Mike Sissco, Darrel Hoskins,
Mike Ditmer, and Ray Hoskins.
Mr. McKenzie was born Jan. 11, 1927, in Milton-Freewater to Winfred
and Winnie Beaumont McKenzie. He contracted polio when he was 10 months
old. Mr. McKenzie was educated at Umapine and Central grade schools and
McLoughlin Union High School.
He Worked as a mechanic at Walla Walla Airport and Lusk Brake Shop.
He was also employed at Goodwill Industries, Walla Walla.
Mr. McKenzie moved to Tacoma in 1978 to be near his son, Jack McKenzie.
Survivors include his son, Jack of Tacoma; a sister, Irene Barnes of
Milton-Freewater; two brothers Irvan McKenzie of Hermiston and Thomas McKenzie
of Walla Walla; and two grandchildren. His brother, Cecil McKenzie, died
on 1978.

Calvin Frasher Dies
Calvin Frasher, aged 87, died yesterday morning, January 28, at his
home, 312 West Webb Street. His death was due to paralysis. He was born
in London, Laurel county, Kentucky. February 28, 1839. his marriage to
Miss. Alabama Gray took place December 21, 1865. His widow survives him.
They were the parents of five children, two of whom are living. They are
Miss. Daisy Frasher and Charles Frasher of the city. Six grand children
and nine great grand children survive also. Funeral arrangements have not
yet been made.

Carl Troedson Dies
Heppner- Carl Troedson, 69, widely-known Ione area wheat rancher, died
at a Portland Hospital Monday.
He was born Sept. 2, 1903 in Ione, the son of Johan Troedson and Thilda
Nelson pioneer Ione area ranchers. He was a member of Valby Lutheran Church,
Ione Pomona and Willows granges. He was secretary-treasurer of the Ione-Lexington
cemetery board.
He is survived by one brother, Verner Troedson of Pendleton, and a
sister, Linea Nottage of Portland.
Services will be Wednesday. Vault interment will be at High View Cemetery
in Ione.
Donations may be made to the cancer fund.

Death Takes Ex-Resident
WALLA WALLA- Cella G. Renn of Walla Walla, a resident here for almost
50 years, died at the Odd Fellows Home this week after a long illness.
She was 82.
Miss. Renn was once a resident of Pendleton.
Born, March 2, 1880, at Silverton Ore., she was the daughter of B.F.
and Theresa Renn. The family moved in 1887 to Pendleton, where Miss. Renn
later worked for many years for the Hartman Abstract Co. She came to Walla
Walla in 1914 to take care of her mother after her father’s death.
In 1932, Miss. Renn accepted a position as children’s governess at
the Odd Fellows Home here. She served in many capacities at the home until
her retirement due to ill health in 1952, after which she stayed at the
home as a member.
Miss. Renn was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Pythian Sisters.
She is survived by a sister, Dora Christiansen of Pomeroy, and several
nieces and nephews, including Mrs. J.B. Huntington of Walla Walla.
Funeral was in the MacMartin and Chamberlain Chapel. Interment followed
in the family plot at Mountain View Cemetery.

HEPPNER – Clara Leannah Hampton-Cox, 95, died this morning at Pioneer
Nursing Home.
Cremation services were today.
A memorial service will be arranged for a later date.
Born March 13, 1888, at Baywood, Va., she was the daughter of Charles
A. and Nancy J. (Todd) Hampton.
On Oct. 13, 1909, she married William Claude Cox at Baywood.
They came to Oregon in December, 1909.
Surviving are Nancy Jane Holden of Battleground, Wash.; three sons:
Clair H. Cox of Corvallis, William L. Cox of Milton-Freewater; eight grandchildren
and seven great grandchildren.

Martin died of a heart attack near his Meacham home Thursday.
He was 66.
He was born July 4, 1913 in Umapine to Bernard and Marie Martin.
He attended schools there.
He and Jewell J. Records were married March 29, 1940 in Lewiston,
Idaho. Martin was a butter-maker from 1941 at Golden West Creamery in Pendleton.
He and his wife then bought the Milton-Freewater Dairy Queen and operated
it until retirement in 1975, when they moved to Meacham.
Martin was a charter member of BPOE 2146.
He is survived by his wife, at home; sons, Pat, of White Salmon,
and Gary, of La Grande; his mother, Marie Martin, Milton-Freewater; sisters,
Bernadine Geissel, Milton-Freewater, Laverne Jones and Betty Owsley, both
of Seattle, Wash.; brothers, L.P. “Pat”, Seattle, and W.B. “Bus” of Walla
Walla. There are four grandchildren.

Drain seven years ago.
He had served in the Navy.

Mrs. Wallan, 84, Adams, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 1984, at Delamarter Care
Center, Pendleton.
She was born June 7, 1900 in Iowa, the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. James
Chestnut. She moved to Adams, Oregon, with her parents when she was 8 months
old. She attended school at Adams and lived there all her life.
Mrs. Wallan was a member of the Bide-Owee Club, the Adams Ladies Club,
and the Adams Baptist Church.
Her husband, Ralph Archie Wallan died in 1982. A son, Bill Wallan and
a sister also died earlier.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Mary Wallan, Athena; a grandson,
William M. Wallan, Portland; a granddaughter, Mary Lou Trevor, Redding,
Calif.; and great grandchildren, Cary Elizabeth Trevor and William Trevor,
both of Redding Calif.

PENDLETON- Edna A. Brewer, 85, Pendleton, died Wednesday, Jan. 23,
1985, at Crooke Rest Home, Pendleton.
Her funeral will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday at Burns Mortuary Chapel, Pendleton,
with burial at Olney Cemetery, Pendleton.
Mrs. Brewer was born Jan. 25, 1899 at Joplin, Mo.
She married Berry Brewer on Aug. 18, 1920. The couple lived in Hermiston
for 25 years and at Arlington 40 years before coming to Pendleton in 1978.
Mrs. Brewer was a member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors include sons, Donald J. Brewer, Seattle; Carroll C. Brewer,
Salem, and Clifford C. Brewer, Pendleton; there are several grandchildren.
Her husband, Berry Brewer, died April 19, 1964.

services for Edna G. McDonald, 81, in the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home
Chapel Tuesday, March 26.
Pall bearers were Rolland Kaesemeyer, Gordon Faires, Jim Foster, Dean
Weatherman, Ray Geissel and Fred Etling.
Sacred selections by Mrs. Bern Bliss were “How Great Thou Art” and
“In the Garden”. Mrs. Fred Etling was organist.
Mrs. McDonald was born near Weston February 22, 1893. Her parents were
Peter and Ann Geiss who were wheat rancher. In 1902 they moved to Milton-Freewater.
On November 18, 1920 she married Frank McDonald and the couple spent the
rest of their lives here. He died in 1940. She had been in ill health for
several years. She was a member of the First Christian Church.
Burial was in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery under the direction of
Menselle-Rhodes Funeral Home.

GOLDENDALE, Wash.- Eula Evangeline Shull, 87, died Friday, Sept. 20,
1985, at Goldendale, Wash.
The funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, at the Knosher-Erdman
Funeral Home in Goldendale, followed by burial at the Centerville Cemetery.
She was born Oct. 12, 1897, in Wakefield, Kan., to Frank and Lorinda
(Jackson) Draper. Her mother died when Eula was 18 months old, and
she was raised by foster parents, Josh and Nellie Parrack.
On Jan. 23, 1918, she married John N. Shull at Wakefield, Kan. The
couple farmed in Kansas and Colorado before coming
in 1940 to Goldendale, where they operated a dairy farm with their
son, Ray. Later they purchased the John Deere Implement Co., and operated
it for several years. They also ran ranches in the Springcreek, Centerville,
and Goldendale areas.
In 1970, they retired and moved to Goldendale because of her husband’s
failing health. He died in 1973.
While living in Centerville, Bula was active in the Centerville Grange
and the Thimble Club. She also worked as a Avon representative for several
years.
Survivors include a daughter, Althea Watts of Hermiston; three sons:
Ray of Goldendale, Darold of Spokane, and John C. of Hermiston; four sisters;
Zola Headman of Tulsa Okla., Blanche Lillienthal of Albany, N.Y., Emma
Walno of Loveland Colo., and Elsie Sargent of Oldsberg, Kan.; 18 grandchildren,
28 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. One daughter, a
brother and two sisters died earlier.

Florence Reeves
Umatilla – Florence Rachel Reeves, a Umatilla resident for more than
50 years died Friday at St. Mary’s Hospital in Walla Walla, Wash.
She was 77.
Mrs. Reeves was born Dec. 23, 1901 in Everest, Kan. She was a
member of Pocahontas Lodge of Umatilla, and also helped with Senior
Citizen dinners.
Surviving are her sons, Harold E of Santa Barbara, Calif;, and
Bennie B.; Irrigon; Daughters, Dottie F. Stephens and Norma V. Busler,
both of Umatilla, Rita Jean Creamer, Irrigon, and Patsy I Hutchinson, La
Grande; Sisters, Eva Otten and Gladys Winder, both of Peoria, Ill., Molly
Hunt, Abington Ill., Freda Shane and Velma Wenstrom, both of Monmouth,
Ill., and Edna Hanson, Portland. There are 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 20, at Burns Mortuary
Chapel in Hermiston. Interment will be at Umatilla Cemetery.

Francis M. Fry
Francis Marvin Fry passed away Thursday, February 12, at the home of
his sister, Mrs. F.D. Hutton, on river road east of town. He had arrived
for a visit at the Hutton home only about twenty-four hours before from
Sunnyside Wash., but had been ailing for some time. Mr. Fry was born in
Illinois, April 17, 1855, and was 76 years if age. He is survived by his
wife and two sons. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock
at the Christian Church, Rev. Francis M. Arant officiating. Burial was
at the Odd Fellows cemetery in charge of Munselle’s Funeral Directors.
Sample, Francis M.

Francis M. Sample
After a residence in this vicinity extending over a period of sixty
years, practically his entire life. Francis M. Sample passed away last
Friday at the home of his son, Leonard Sample, in Milton, aged 64 years.
Mr. Sample was born on a farm near Walla Walla November 4, 1868, and
moved to the Oregon side of the line early in life, residing in the valley
all his life. While he had not been in the best of health for the past
year or two, he was able to be about and attend to his customary duties
up to within a few days of his passing. His last illness lasted but two
days and heart trouble was given as the immediate cause of death. He is
survived by a son, Leonard Sample, and a daughter, Mrs. John Daugherty.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Munselle chapel,
Rev. Wilbur Torgerson officiating. Interment followed in the Odd Fellows
Cemetery.

Heart Attack Fatal For Frank McDonald
Frank McDonald, Familiarly known among his friends as “Scotty”, died
suddenly at his home in Milton Thursday morning about 2:30 o’clock following
a heart attack. He was 54 years of age and was a native of Cullen, Scotland.
Sueviving relatives include his wife, Edna Geiss McDonald, a daughter;
Annabel, and a sister, Mrs. J.S. French of San Francisco.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the
Milton Christian Church, Rev. Fred J. Greene officiating. Interment at
Milton I.O.O.F. cemetery with Masonic service at the graveside.

G.C. Schroeder Dies at 81
George C. Schroeder, 81, a resident of Umatilla County 73 years, died
Sunday in Pendleton. The body is at Folsom’s pending arrangements.
Mr. Schroeder a native of Illinois where he was born Nov. 3, 1876,
came to this country when a boy of eight with his parents. He married Dora
Hudeman May 17, 1898 at the Hudeman ranch north of Pendleton. Survivors
are sons John Schroeder, Pendleton, and Carlton Schroeder, of Los Angeles;
daughter Mrs. Robert G. Harris, Maple Valley, Wash., and sisters Mrs. Alba
Card, Seaside, and Mrs. Joe Schmidt, North Hollywood, Calif.
He farmed in Umatilla County most of his life and also moved to Hermiston
for a time, living there for five years.

GEORGE, Grace Ellen, 63, late of Hermiston. Survived by husband, William
A. George, Hermiston; son, William A. George, Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah;
daughters, Mrs. Tereso Barreras, Hermiston; Mrs. Robert Riddle, Heppner;
Grace Ellen Hixson, Hermiston; brother, Robert Pogue, Heppner; 18 grandchildren
and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be Thursday at Burns Mortuary
Chapel, Hermiston at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Jack Naff officiating. Burial
will be at the Wallowa Cemetery at 1 p.m.

Two Die in Wreck on Oregon Trail Highway
Guy Clayton, aged 49, and his niece, Aurene Clayton, aged 12 years,
both of Echo, met almost instant death Saturday evening on the old Oregon
Trail at the eastern edge of Rieth When the Clayton car left the road and
went over the bluff, landing on the jagged rocks below. Three other girls
suffered injuries. The party was on the way to Pendleton to attend a show.
It is believed that Mr. Clayton was blinded by the lights of a passing
car, causing him to lose control.
Beidler, Harland

Harland Beidler’s Rites Wednesday
Funeral will be Wednesday for Harland D. Beidler, 72, Pendleton, who
died Sunday in Pendleton.
Born in Wallowa, he had been a resident of Pendleton for the last 12
years. He had worked as a foreman in planing mills at Wallowa, Pendleton,
La Grande, John Day, and Kinzua. He had resided in John Day for 10 years
in the 1950’s.
He is survived by a brother, Herbert Beidler, Olympia, Wash.; sisters,
Thelma Harris, Pendleton, and Edna Kiel, Joseph; and several nieces and
nephews.

Harriet O. Powers
MILTON-FREEWATER – Harriet O. Powers, 84, died Tuesday at Elzora Manor.
Funeral will begin 10 a.m. Sunday, at the Burns Mortuary Chapel in
Pendleton, followed by vault interment in Skyview Memorial Park.
Mrs. Powers had lived in Pendleton from 1948 to1961, then moving to
Milton-Freewater.
She was born Dec. 26, 1898 in Burlingame, Kan.
On Dec. 26, 1917, she married George A. Powers in Ottawa, Kan. For
many years she worked at Harris Pine Mills in Pendleton, and also worked
several years at the Eastern Oregon Hospital and Training Center. Her husband
died in 1968.
Mrs. Powers was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Surviving are three daughters: Wilma Stiles of Pendleton, Mildred Helton,
of Roseburg, and Bernice Hall of Moundville, Mo.; son Marlin Powers, Pendleton;
sisters Emily Bracken, Mt. Vernon, Mo., and Mary Ellen Steinhouse, Fort
Smith, Ark.; brother Jim Buttler of Mount Vernon, Mo.; 35 grandchildren
and 67 great grandchildren.
Daughters Bettylou Stiles and Ethelyn O’Neal died earlier.

Helen M. Gibson
PENDLETON – Helen M. Gibson, 79, was found dead Wednesday, at her home
in Pendleton.
Funeral will begin 2 p.m. Monday, at the Burns Mortuary Chapel, followed
by burial at Olney Cemetery.
Born in Pendleton Aug. 13, 1913, she was the daughter of Tom and Melinda
(Handy) Gibson.
She taught school in Adams and in Union.
She and George Stangier were married from Dec. 28, 1938, until July
27, 1965.
In addition to operating the Umatilla County Girls Home for several
years, she taught ceramics at Eastern Oregon Hospital and Training Center
from 1940 to 1960.
Survivors include sister Edna Louise Washburn of Portland; and brother
Thomas Silas Gibson Sr., of Pilot Rock.
A sister, Bertha Margaret Porter, and a half sister, Eva Gibson, Died
Earlier.
