Charles Lloyd Sherratt
A private service was held for Charles Lloyd Sherratt, who died May 24, 1999, in Tillamook at age 76.
Mr. Sherratt was born Aug. 14, 1922, in Sarles, N.D. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Europe. He moved to Forest Grove in 1938 and was a logger and then was an undersheriff for Washington County for 25 years before his retirement in 1980. He moved to Tillamook in 1984.
Survivors include his daughter, Linda Orais of Hillsboro; sons, Larry of Hillsboro and Nicholas of Portland; brother, Sherwood of Forest Grove; sister, Delores Short of Longview, Wash.; and four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Interment is in Willamette National Cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the American Diabetes Association. Arrangements are by Waud's Funeral Home in Tillamook.

Donald Mellenthin Miller
A memorial service was held in Pocatello, Idaho, for Donald Mellenthin Miller, who died May 20, 1999, at age 88.
Mr. Miller was born Dec. 9, 1910, in Montrose, Minn., and was raised in Aberdeen, S.D. He attended college in Brainerd, Minn., and worked for Lockheed in Southern California before moving to Portland in 1948. He was a planning commissioner for Multnomah County for 20 years and worked part time for the Charles F. Berg store, retiring in 1975. He was a member of Laurelhurst Presbyterian Church. He lived in Pocatello for the past two years. In 1935, he married Virginia Eloise Cook.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Maryann Pollack of Fresno, Calif., and Sue Ann Hoge of Pocatello; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Willard Elden Kruse
A private celebration of life will be held for Willard Elden Kruse, who died May 23, 1999, at age 77.
Mr. Kruse was born Dec. 21, 1921, in Albion, Neb., and moved in 1928 to Kelso, Wash. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and in the Navy Reserve from 1947 until 1989. After active duty in the Korean War, he was an assistant chief clerk for Long Bell Lumber Co. in Gardiner. He later worked in the Multnomah County auditor's office in Portland, rising to the position of chief deputy auditor, and was the chief accountant for Familian Northwest before retiring in 1988. In 1948, he married Alma Clark; she died in 1979. He married Betty Ann (Bibb) Buckee in 1980, and they moved to Longview, Wash., in 1989.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Sara of Estacada; stepdaughters, Carol Sullivan of Burlington, Wash., Mary Cowles of Mossyrock, Wash., and Laurie Hicks of Portland; stepson, Steve Buckee of Oregon City; sister, Patricia Sells of Kelso; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

L. Marguerite Helfrich

Mrs. Helfrich was born Aug. 5, 1917, in Portland. Her maiden name was Schirmer. She was a graduate of Franklin High School and worked for Portland-area banks until retiring from U.S. National Bank in 1982. She then lived in Brookings before moving to Coos Bay seven years ago. James Burton Hartman
At his request, no service will be held for James Burton Hartman, who died May 21, 1999, in Astoria at age 66.
Mr. Hartman was born Sept. 22, 1932, in Omaha, Neb., and moved to Portland as a child. He graduated from Gresham High School in 1951, then served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Korean War. He had lived in Seaside for nine years and in Astoria for the past 26 years. He was a heavy-equipment operator for Warrenton Lumber Mill for 22 years before retiring seven years ago. In 1964, he married Georgia Greenslitt.
Survivors include his wife; son, Bert of Kingston, Wash.; daughter, Melanie Bean of Jacksonville, Fla.; brother, Jack of Warrenton; sister, Jean King of Portland; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Melvin B. Walden
A private service was held for Melvin B. Walden, who died May 19, 1999, at age 90.
Mr. Walden was born May 26, 1908, in View, Wash. He played banjo and drums in country dance bands, felled trees, worked for Mt. Adams Pear Co. for five years and then was a driver and salesman for Quality Pies for 25 years before his retirement in the early 1970s. In 1962, he married Carmel Campbell.
Survivors include his wife and his daughter, Bonnie May Styles of Palm Springs, Calif.

Ronald D. Troupe
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, May 31, 1999, in Mt. Scott Funeral Home for Ronald D. Troupe, who died May 25 of heart disease at age 58.
Mr. Troupe was born July 25, 1940, in Spokane. He moved to Portland in 1970 and was a salesman for several companies, retiring from Clinical Health Systems in 1995. In 1971, he married Anna Rohner.

Paul Christian Stipe
A gathering will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 29, 1999, in the main pavilion of the Clackamas County Fairgrounds for Paul Christian Stipe, who died May 20 of cancer at age 48.
Mr. Stipe was born Sept. 3, 1950, in Tillamook and was raised in Beaverton. He graduated from Sunset High School in 1969, and then served in the U.S. Navy. He was a mechanic for the city of Portland Fleet Services for 18 years until January. In 1992, he married Maureen Miltenberger.
Survivors include his wife; son, David R. of Canby; parents, Art and Dorothy of Portland; sisters, Lorie Rimer of Beaverton and Martha Moore of Houston, Texas; and brother, Warren of Beaverton.

Hubert H.C. Simon

Mr. Simon was born July 21, 1917, in Wasco and was raised in Eugene. He moved to Portland in the 1930s and owned Allied Motors, a motorcycle dealership, for 28 years before retiring in 1972.
Survivors include his son, Steve of Portland, daughter, Bonnie Melsness of Bend; sister, Bee Meyer of Vista, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Vera M. Shay
At her request, no service will be held for Vera M. Shay, who died May 21, 1999, at age 96.
Mrs. Shay was born Sept. 8, 1902, in Kalama, Wash. Her maiden name was Close. As a young woman, she moved to Portland. She was an executive secretary for Sherwin-Williams for more than 30 years and for the Terminal Sales Building for several years before retiring. In the late 1930s, she married R. Glenn; he died in 1982.
Survivors include her son, Ronald Shay of King City; brother, Wayne Close of Wallis, Texas; and one grandchild.

Sonja Carol Ross
A memorial gathering will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 30, 1999, in the home of Kerry Bue, 16875 S.W. Tracy Ave., Lake Oswego, for Sonja Carol Ross, who died May 25 at age 56.
Ms. Ross was born July 17, 1942, in Pennsylvania. Her maiden name was Conrow. She moved to the Portland area as a child and graduated from Milwaukie High School. She had been a member of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Reserve and worked for the Clackamas County Jail for several years. For the past seven years, she was a housekeeper for Days Inn in Clackamas.
Survivors include her daughters, Kandi of Washougal, Wash., Kris Fear of Federal Way, Wash., Kelly of Portland, Kim Tebon of San Antonio, Texas, and Kerry Bue of Lake Oswego; mother, Nina VanAvery of Lake Oswego; brother, Butch Conrow of Gladstone; and 10 grandchildren.

Mrs. Nielson was born June 22, 1937, in Greenbush, Minn. Her maiden name was Urdahl. She graduated from Arizona State University. She had lived in Vancouver since 1971 and was a middle-school teacher for the Vancouver and Evergreen school districts for eight years before retiring in 1990.

Alan Roger Mettie
No service will be held for Alan Roger Mettie, who died May 10, 1999, of prostate cancer at age 71.
Mr. Mettie was born Jan. 24, 1928, in Portland. He attended Benson High School and then served in the U.S. Army. He served in the merchant marine for 25 years, was a vending machine serviceman for several companies, including the Canteen Co., and then owned Al's Pool Table Repair for about five years until his retirement in 1990. He was a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross and a co-sponsor, coach and pitcher for a Vancouver-Metro Sixty + League senior softball team, which has been named after him. In 1965, he married Netty C. Lentz Remster; she died in 1995.
Survivors include his sisters, Byrnie Bakly of Madras and Norma L. Schofield of Vancouver, Wash.; and brothers, Earl of Kalama, Wash., and Camas Lenz of Spokane.

Ernest Peter Lekas
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 29, 1999, in Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church for Ernest Peter Lekas, who died May 26 at age 64. A trisagion service will be at 6 p.m. Friday in Riverview Abbey Funeral Home.
Mr. Lekas was born Nov. 3, 1934, in Portland. He graduated from Grant High School in 1953 and attended the University of Portland and Portland State University. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a real estate broker for Norris Beggs & Simpson for 19 years, then founded Lekas Properties in the mid-1980s, which he managed until retiring in 1990. He was a member of the church and served on its board. He also was a past Portland president of the American Hellenic Education Progressive Association. In 1964, he married Bessie Corotas.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Christopher of Seattle and Gregory of Beaverton; daughter, Anastasia Clarke of Lynnwood, Wash.; and brothers, Thomas and Andrew, both of Portland.

Antonia S. 'Toni' Lambdin
At her request, no service will be held for Antonia S. "Toni" Lambdin, who died May 23, 1999, at age 88.
Mrs. Lambdin was born April 24, 1911, in Sublet, Wyo., and moved to Portland as a young woman. Her maiden name was Sinko. She had been a nurse for Good Samaritan Hospital for many years and was a homemaker. In 1935, she married Charles H.; he died in 1978.

Joseph W. Kreefer
A private service will be held in East Liverpool, Ohio, for Joseph W. Kreefer, who died May 17, 1999, at age 96.
Mr. Kreefer was born Oct. 19, 1902, in East Liverpool. He was an estimator and designer in the steel industry in Ohio until retiring at age 68. He lived in Sun Valley, Idaho, and Bend before moving to the Portland area 13 years ago. In 1926, he married Ruth H. Orr; she died in 1995.
Survivors include his daughter, Anna Mae McPeak of Wellsville, Ohio; sons, Joseph W. Jr. of East Liverpool, Harry J. of Hailey, Idaho, and Robert E. of Gresham; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Kemp was born March 19, 1913, in Hot Springs, S.D. Her maiden name was Spiegelberg. A medical technician, she worked for hospitals in Pontiac, Mich., until retiring in 1978. She had lived in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., for 60 years and for the past three years was a resident of Spring Ridge at Charbonneau in Wilsonville. In 1938, she married Felix J.; he died in 1981.

Mrs. Graham was born Aug. 9, 1923, in Shreveport, La., and was raised in Monroe, La. Her maiden name was Simpson. During World War II, she served in the U.S. Navy WAVES in Pensacola, Fla. She had lived in Vancouver for six years in the 1960s and returned in 1981. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist. In 1945, she married Donald.

Lee Hoag Federici
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 29, 1999, in Oak Grove United Methodist Church for Lee Hoag Federici, who died May 19 at age 78.
Mrs. Federici was born Jan. 5, 1921, in Medford. Her maiden name was Whillock. She moved to Portland in 1964 and owned Center Line International Commercial Real Estate for about 20 years before retiring in 1990. She was a member of the Episcopal Church. She was named volunteer of the year for Willamette View Manor in 1997. In 1939, she married Leo E. Hoag; they were later divorced. She married Paul A. Federici in 1980; he died in about 1984.
Survivors include her sons, Rob Hoag of West Linn and Steve Hoag of Aloha; sister, Alpha Crews of Palo Alto, Calif.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Curlin was born July 9, 1924, in Mabank, Texas. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. He moved to Gresham from Nevada in 1960. He was a painter and paper hanger for 50 years and owned C & C Painting for 30 years before his retirement in 1995. In 1956, he married Isabel Parker.

Harriet Ruth Smithson DeGuire
A private memorial service was held for Harriet Ruth Smithson DeGuire, who died May 6, 1999, of Alzheimer's disease at age 93.
Mrs. DeGuire was born May 2, 1906, in Cortland, N.Y. Her maiden name was Smith. She graduated from Syracuse University in 1929 and did graduate work at the University of Missouri. She moved to Salem in 1943 and began working for the state of Oregon about 1950 as a clerk for the Department of Motor Vehicles. A few years later, she became a lab technician for the Department of Agriculture, and she retired in 1970. She was a member of the Unitarian Church. She had lived in the Beaverton area for the past three years. In 1931, she married Hayden D. Smithson; he died in 1970. She married Raphael "Ray" DeGuire in 1974; he died in 1982.
Survivors include her daughter, Adeline D. Rickey of Salem; son, Jackson L. Smithson of Beaverton; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Mrs. DeGuire requested that her body be donated to Oregon Health Sciences University. Arrangements were by Omega Funeral & Cremation Service.
