Dr. Kenneth W. Shipps: Funeral

The funeral for Dr. Kenneth W. Shipps, 54, will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Jerry H. Hilton officiating and assisted by Rev. Dr. J. Bruce Byers. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Brown Funeral Home. 
He was born on February 26, 1942, in Kansas City, Mo., to Glenn and Fern (Simpson) Shipps and died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 1996 at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, Wash. 
He grew up in central Missouri and later moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., where he attended the Colorado Springs School system, graduating from Palmer High School. He earned his undergraduate degree from Wheaton College in 1964 and went on to Yale University where he earnedhis master's degrees in history and philosophy, and his Ph.D. in history. 
He began his teaching career in 1969 as an instructor of history at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., where he went on to serve as a history professor. He was also department chair at Trinity College in Deerfield, Ill., and dean of the faculty at Barrington College in Rhode Island. He was also awarded fellowships to Princeton University and Brown University. He served as provost [and vice president for academic affairs] from 1985 to 1992. He served as provost and dean of the faculty at Whitworth University from 1992 until the spring of 1996, when he accepted a position as provost at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark. However, his health problems had delayed his move to Arkansas. 
At the time of his death, he was at the University of Washington's transplant center awaiting liver transplant surgery to treat a rare liver disorder. 
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Spokane, Wash., and a former member of the Enid First Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Spokane, Wash., and a former member of the Enid Rotary Club. He was also a member of the Council of Independent Colleges. 
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Charlotte Kroeker, of the home; his mother, Fern Erikson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and his brother, Donald Shipps of Colorado Springs, Colo. 
He was preceded in death by his father. 
Memorials may be made in his memory to the music program at First Presbyterian Church of Enid; Faculty Development funds at John Brown University and Phillips University; or the Faculty Development Fund at the Coalition for Christian Colleges and Universities with Brown Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds. 

Jane Champlin, family matriarch dies Tuesday, her 86th birthday

On the day of Jane Champlin's death, it was only fitting to celebrate her life.
"She died on her birthday," said the Rev. J. Bruce Byers, who will officiate at Champlin's funeral Thursday. "I think the family would want to celebrate the life of a really noble woman.
"She was the most wonderful woman I have ever met."
Jane Champlin was born Oct. 1, 1910, in Grand Junction, Colo., to Dr. and Mrs. Dan Luther Edwards, and died Oct 1, 1996.
As a child she moved with her family to the Enid area. Her father was the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church Ponca City before moving to Enid where he was pastor of the First Presbyterian Chruch of Enid, where Champlin was a member.
She graduated from Enid High School and attended Phillips Unversity and the University of Oklahoma.
In 1934 Janes Edwards became Mrs. Joe Champlin, whose family developed Champlin Refining Company, Enid's largest oil firm. But Jane Champlin made her own contributions to her family's legacy.
"She worked hard, even if she didn't feel good," said Nacy Davies, a life-long friend.
"I remember the evening she was given the (Distinguished Citizen Award)," Davies said. "She attributed everything to her family."
In addition to recieving the Distinguished Citizen Award by the Greater Enid Chamber of Commerce, Champlin earned the title of Salvation Army Outstanding Citizen and was the recipient of the Pride of the Plainsmen Award from Enid High School.
She recieved a special award for her distinguished service to Phillips University. The university recognized her in 1995 with the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. Champlin has providied a major portion of the funding university's Performing Arts Series.
"Her contributions really meant the difference to having (the series)," said Dr. John Stam, director of Performing Arts Series.
Her long association with the YWCA Advisory Board earned her the honor of Woman of the Year in 1974.
"All the things you stand for are all the things I love and stand for," Champlin said upon acceptance of that award 22 years ago.
In 1993 she hosteds a reunion for 100 family members in celebration of the Cherokee Strip Centennial and a century of Champlin history in Northwest Oklahoma.
Champlin was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, in 1974.
Her death is the end of another chapter in the history of Enid, Davies said.
The funeral for Jane Edwards Champlin will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Chruch. Burial will follow in Enid Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice or the First Presbyterian Church of Enid.

Robert R. Nigh: Funeral (Former Faculty)

Memorial service for Robert R. "Bob" Nigh, 71, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ladusas-Evans Funeral Home. Dr. Bob Simpson will officiate. His body will be cremated.
He was born Aug. 17, 1925, in McAlester to Sam and Burnadine Rasar Nigh and died Saturday, Aug. 24, 1996, at Mercy Health Center, Oklahoma City, from complications of cancer surgery. He was a local businessman and a former economics professor at Phillips University. He was also the former head of the Business Department at the university. He was a veteran of the United States Naval Air Corps and an avid pilot.
Surviving are his wife, Helen of the home; three daughters, Mary Ferem of Tulsa, Normandie Nigh of Marina del Rey, Calif., and Stephanie Hendrick of San Diego, Calif.,one son, Robert of Enid; and three grandsons.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the Salvation Army.

The funeral for Dr. Robert C. "Bob" Young, 67, will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the University Place Christian Church. The Rev. John Peterson will officiate. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery under direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. 
He was born Oct. 30, 1928, in Oklahoma City to Robert and Marie McMillan Young and died Saturday, Aug. 3, 1996, at the University Nursing Center, Enid. He moved to Sheridan, Wyo., in 1937 where he graduated from Sheridan High School in 1945. 
On June 20, 1945, he married Betty Lea Wilkes. He enlisted into the United States Navy on Oct. 20, 1945, and served as a chaplain's assistant in the Com. Serv. PAC. He attended Phillips University in January 1948, graduating June 5, 1951, with a bachelor of arts degree. He then attended Phillips University Seminary from 1951 to 1954, receiving a bachelor of divinity degree, later reissued as a master of divinity degree. He was a minister at Banner Community Church and in Lahoma. In 1949, he was licensed by University Place Christian Church. From June 20, 1954, until June 30, 1972, he served as an Army chaplain, retiring as lieutenant colonel. He served as an Army chaplain, retiring as lieutenant colonel. He served at Fort Riley, Kan.; Kitzingen, Germany; Fort Benning, Ga.; Korea; Sharp Army Depot, Vietnam; Fort Bliss and Fort Hamilton. He was awarded the bronze star and Vietnamese Legion of Merit. 
In 1973, he attended the University of Wyoming, earning his master's degree in interpersonal communication. In 1978, he attended Ohio University, earning his doctor of philosophy in public address. He taught at Ohio University, Wyoming University and three years at Phillips University. From 1982 until 1990, he was a real estate agent. He was a member of University Place Christian Church where he was assistant teacher of Christian Century for eight years and taught the Homebuilders Class from 1988 until present. He was an elder, membership chairman, chairman of the board and moderator in 1990. He also spearheaded the Capital Fund campaign. 
Surviving are his wife, Betty of the home; one son, John of Napa, Calif.; two daughters, Susan Huegel of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Lynn Snyder of Sacramento, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
