Kathryn B. Wise
WADSWORTH TWP. -- Kathryn B. Wise (nee Johnson), 48, died Monday, Dec.
14, 1998, at her residence, after a year-long battle with cancer.
Born in Akron, Mrs. Wise resided in Wadsworth Township 21 years, previously
residing in Norton. A graduate of Norton High School and Kent State University,
she was a member of Wadsworth First Christian Church, and was a Wadsworth
Soccer Mom. She was devoted to her family and friends, and enjoyed gardening
and crafts.
Mrs. Wise was the daughter of the late Andrew Johnson, and is survived
by husband, John E.; son, John and daughter, Tami, both of the residence;
mother, Ruby Johnson of Norton; sisters, Sandy (Mrs. Bill) Galbreath of
Medina, Pat (Mrs. Jerry) Laughlin of Doylestown, Ann Johnson of Barberton;
special friend, Georgia Boal; nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Thursday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at

Michael John Wentz
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Michael John Wentz, 45, of Rock Hill, passed away
Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at his home.
Born Aug. 2, 1953, in Barberton, Ohio, he was the son of Jennie Kukec
Wentz and the late Victor Anthony Wentz. Mr. Wentz was employed at Bowater.
He was a graduate of Ohio University and was well known for his humor and
his true and lasting friendship. He will be missed by his family, friends,
and loving neighbors.
Mr. Wentz is survived by his wife, Jeanne Marie Englehart Wentz; his
children, Caitlin, Kyle, Leanne, and Devin; mother, Jennie Kukec Wentz
of Barberton; brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Teresa Wentz of Stow;
also brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, David and Anne Englehart, John
and Martha Englehart, Steve and Juanita Englehart, Tom and Susan Englehart,
Michael Englehart and Anita McHugh; 20 nieces and nephews. He was preceded
in death by his father, Victor Anthony Wentz; brother, Frederick Wentz;

Evelyn M. Walling, 80, passed away Dec. 14, 1998, at Hospice Care Center.
She was born in Frostburg, Md., and had lived most of her life in the
Akron area. Mrs. Walling retired in 1980 from Barberton Plastics.
Preceded in death by son, Charles Ivan McClellan, she is survived by

Harry E. Pride
Harry E. Pride, 73, went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 12, 1998,
after a long illness.
Born in Russellville, Ala., he had lived in this community for 50 years.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II, and was employed by
General Tire for 25 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of Arlington
Church of God, and also a member of Ensley Rising Star 47 in Russellville,
Ala.
He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Johnson of Akron; son, James
E. Pride of Russellville, Ala.; brothers, Joe, Clyde (Leola) Pride, both
of Cleveland, Rowland Eugene of Akron, and Robert G. Pride of Russellville,
Ala.; sisters, Earline (Clarence) Lucas, Elizabeth Gholston, both of Russellville,
Ala., Mary Wright of Kalamazoo, Mich., Lillie Mae Pride of Russellville,
Ala., Vera Thompson, and Lila Faye Pride, both of North Chicago, Ill.;
five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews,

Andrew Pleskach
Andrew Pleskach, 85, of Akron, died Dec. 14, 1998.
A life resident of the area, and an Army veteran of World War II, he
retired from the Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. in 1978 after 32 years
service. Andy was a member of the Portage, Summit, Pleasant Valley, Mahoning
and Trumbell Beagle clubs. He played football on the original Red Peppers
and later coached for Bantam Football.
Preceded in death by his parents, John and Pauline; brothers, Frank
and Michael; and sister, Mary Dietz, he is survived by his wife of 48 years,
Leona; daughters, Geraldine Horner of Salisbury, Md., and Georgia Christine
Wilborn of Akron; five grandchildren, one great-grandson; brothers, John

Clair M. (Chechak) Palmer, 80, of Ravenna, died Monday after a sudden
illness.

include her husband of 56 years, Kenneth; son, Terry (Barbara) Palmer of

BARBERTON -- Rush L. McCracken Jr., 79, passed away Dec. 14, 1998.
Born April 25, 1919, in Shadyside, Ohio, he was a member for over 50
years at the First Baptist Church, served wih the U.S. Navy during World
War II, and retired from Reiter Dairy with 20 years of service. He was
also a member of the Teamsters Union.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Norma J. McCracken; son, Thomas
L. (Sandra) McCracken of Wadsworth; granddaughter, Cheryl L. Vespoint;
grandson, Timothy L. (Brook) McCracken; great-grandson and best friend,
Jimmy Vespoint Jr., all of Barberton; stepgrandchildren, Christopher Jesperson
of Oklahoma and Mark McDowell of Barberton; sisters, Evalee Gould of Portage
Lakes, Edith (Dick) Shoff of Barberton; sister-in-law, Clarene Obney of

Ruth Z. McCord
Ruth Z. McCord died Dec. 15, 1998, at Rockynol Retirement Community.
Although born in Buckhannon, W. Va., on June 5, 1906, she lived most
of her life in Akron. Graduating from Central High School, she attended
Ohio State University in Columbus, where she was affiliated with Kappa
Kappa Gamma Sorority. During summers she was associated with the McLean
Players, a professional theatrical group. Married to the late George E.
McCord Jr. -- son of a former superintendent of Akron Public Schools --
she was active in many local affairs. She was president of Ohio State Alumni,
president of the Children's Home Auxiliary Board for two years, a member
of the Kate Waller Barrett board, a member of the Stan Hywet Women's Auxiliary
Board, and a member of the Akron Symphony Women's Guild. She was also a
longtime member of the Akron's Woman's City Club, where she headed many
committees, and of Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron, where she was twice
president of the Altar Guild and for many years sang in Trinity's Cathedral
Choir. For more than 50 years, she was a member of Turkeyfoot Island Club
and Portage Lakes Yacht Club. With her late husband, she sailed the Portage
Lakes, Lake Erie and the Great Lakes, Chesapeake Bay, and the Caribbean
until she was over 80 years old.
She is survived by her son, George E. McCord III; daughter-in-law,
Pierrette of Westport, Conn.; grandchildren, Valerie McCord-Baldwin of
Worthington, Ohio, Geoffrey McCord of Hagerstown, Md.; and an older sister,
Dana Warden of Houston, Texas.

Noble Rex McClure, 84, passed away Dec. 15, 1998, at Sumner on Merriman.
Mr. McClure was born in Macon County, Tenn., on June 22, 1914. He retired
from the Babcock & Wilcox Co. after 32 years service. Preceded in death
by his daughters, Johnie and Patsy, he is survived by his wife of 63 years,
Sally; children, Robert (Ruth) McClure of Clinton, J. C. McClure of Cheyenne,
Wyo., Margaret (Evan) Reed of Fairlawn, Jack (Linda) McClure of Akron,

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert, in 1961. She leaves

Helen T. Infinger (Perry), 81, of Fort Myers, Fla., died Dec. 3, 1998.
She was born and lived in Akron until moving to Fort Myers in 1964,
and was with the Senior Friendship Center--Congregate Meals Section.
Survivors include her husband, Mark H. Infinger of Fort Myers; sister,
Theresa Stratos; granddaughter, Constance Truax of Akron; nieces, Barbara

Ruth E. Hart, 83, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, after a short
illness.
She was born in Akron. Ruth was a member of the South Akron Church

a member of Springfield Senior Center, and loved to play bridge with her
bridge club.
Mrs. Hart was preceded in death by husband, Alfred, in September. She

Edna P. Grist, 79, of Akron, died Dec. 14, 1998.
Miss Grist was born in Akron, and was a lifelong area resident who
had a distinguished career in the nursing profession, beginning when she

of Nursing at Akron University.

Patricia Francuski, 49, formerly of Akron, died Dec. 13, 1998, in Kingman,
Ariz., after a long illness.

and was a retail sales manager, working at various department stores over
the years.

Kathryn ``Mamo'' Dawson, 82, of Akron, died Dec. 15, 1998.
A native of Freedom, Pa., and an area resident over 65 years, she was

Inez was born in Akron on Nov. 11, 1923, a daughter of the late Chester
A. and Mildred I. Newberry Bittecuffer. Also deceased are daughter, Linda
Lu Michel; and grandsons, Anthony G. Michel and Glenn Tanner, all of Akron.
She is survived by husband, Aubrey D. Robertson of Newcomerstown; son,
James E. Michel of Akron; daughters, Lois J. (Mrs. Robert) Snyder of Winter
Springs, Fla., Sharon I. (Mrs. Robert) Bailes of Akron, and Judith A. Frahn
of Cambridge; two stepdaughters; brother, Chester A. Bittecuffer Jr. of
Diamond, Ohio; sisters, Mae E. Bucher, June E. (Mrs. Richard) Roe, and
Edra M. (Mrs. Gaylord) Dye, all of Newcomerstown; 18 grandchildren, 23
great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
No visiting hours will be observed. Graveside services and burial will
be Saturday, Dec. 19, 11 a.m., at West Lawn Cemetery in Newcomerstown.

Shawn P. McTighe, 35, of Cuyahoga Falls, died Dec. 16, 1998, after
a long illness.
Shawn was born in Akron, and had lived in Cuyahoga Falls. He was formerly
employed at Guy's Bodyshop as a repairman.
His survivors include parents, Patrick and Charlotte of Cuyahoga Falls;
sister and brother-in-law, Cynthia and Rob Hughes; brother, David, all
of Cuyahoga Falls; brother and sister-in-law, Patrick and Tracy of Oakwood

Robert K. McGarvey, 69, of Hudson, beloved husband of Theresa (nee
Almasi); dear father of Terrence (Becki), Renee, Robert Jr. (Karen), and

and Kaitlyn; dear son of the late Warren and Rose (nee Novak) McGarvey;

Vivian B. (Hillyer) Martz
Vivian B. (Hillyer) Martz, of Stow, formerly of Atwater, died Tuesday
at Akron City Hospital, following a short illness.
She was born Nov. 24, 1904, the daughter of Fred and Cora (Craft) Brashears,
in Evansville, Ind. Mrs. Martz had worked as a postal clerk and with her
husband at Hillyer's Market in Atwater. She was a member of Atwater United
Methodist Church and attended First Christian Church in Stow. She was also
a member of the Pythian Sisters, Order of Eastern Star Palmy Chapter, where
she served as past Worthy Matron, Stow Sunshiners Club, and A.A.R.P.
Survivors include daughter, Mrs. Arvile (Sandra) Conley of Stow; 12
grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husbands, Earl Hillyer and John A. Martz;
son, Orville Hillyer; and daughter, Jackie Loudin.
Friends will be received Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Wood-Kortright
Funeral Home (Ravenna Chapel), and from 12 until the 1 p.m. service Saturday,
where Pastor Al Boehlke will officiate. Burial will take place at Atwater

Apolinar ``Joe'' Lopez
Apolinar ``Joe'' Lopez, 72, passed away Monday, Dec. 14, 1998.
He was born July 23, 1926, in Sweetwater, Texas, the son of Rojendo
and Maria (Marujo) Lopez.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vada Lopez. He is survived by
children, Rosalinda Lopez of Thomasville, N.C., Alberto (Connie) Lopez
of Akron; stepchildren, Sandy Huddleston of Clayton, Calif., Cindy Kreitzburg
of Mogadore, Terry Kreitzburg and Billy Kreitzburg, both of Akron; grandchildren,
Jeramy, Kyle, Vanessa, and Alicia Lopez, and many other grandchildren.

Rebecca Kring (Gruic), 49, of Chicopee, Mass., passed away Dec. 12,
1998.
She was born in Akron.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Gertrude Gruic. Survivors
include her sons, Rich and fiancee, Nicki, and Larry; father, George; sister,
Debbie; brothers, Greg and Mark (Cherylyn); nieces and nephews; and special
friend, Laura Edgell.
A Mass in her memory will be held at Immaculate Conception Church on
16th Street in Kenmore on Friday, Dec. 18, at 5:30 p.m.
Delina Jane Hess
Delina Jane Hess, 94, passed away Dec. 15, 1998.
Mrs. Hess was a homemaker all of her adult life, and was a member of
the Grass Valley Seventh Day Adventist Church. She devoted most of her
life to caring for others.
She was preceded in death by husband, Homer Hess; daughters, Wilma,
Marie, and Ilene; parents, Homer and Susan Hickman. Her survivors include
son, Charles Hess of California; daughter, DeLinda Hess-Sump of Nevada;
10 grandchildren, numerous great-great-grandchildren, and friends.

Elmer E. Hanna
Elmer E. Hanna, 92, died suddenly Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998.
Mr. Hanna was born in Akron, graduated from the University of Akron
with a degree in electrical engineering in 1925 and, prior to his retirement
in 1971, was employed as an electrical engineer by Imperial Electric with
43 years of service. He attended St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church,
and was a member of various engineering associations.
Mr. Hanna is survived by beloved wife, Ruth; devoted children, Barbara
(John) Gotch of Greenwich, Conn., Raymond (Sondra) Hanna of Calhoun, Ga.,
David Hanna of Syracuse, N.Y., Samantha (Damon) Canfield of Columbus. ``Giddo''
is also survived by his loving five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Gerald E. Stephan
Gerald E. Stephan, 71 of Canal Fulton died Thursday, December 17, at
Massillon Community Hospital.
Born in Barberton, he was a life resident of Canal Fulton, had retired
from M.C.A. Sign Co. and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
He was a member of SS Philip & James Catholic Church, Canal Fulton
where he was an usher for 40 years, was a member of VFW 9795, Canal Fulton,
served with the Canal Fulton Volunteer Fire Department for ten years and
sponsored four children through the Christian Children's Fund.
Preceded in death by parents, Robert J. and Geraldine Stephan; he is
survived by sister, Nancy Stangelo, Massillon; brothers, Robert Stephan,
Canal Fulton, Donald Stephan, Massillon, Richard Stephan, Nashville, Tenn.;
numerous nieces and nephews.

Harry T. Roach
Harry T. Roach, 91, passed away Dec. 17, 1998.
Born Feb. 16, 1907, in Monroe County, Ohio, he was preceded in death
by his father and mother, John and Nettie Roach; brothers, Julian, Finnley,
and Talbort; wife, Evora; and daughter, Barbara Hostettler. Survivors include
his sons and daughters-in-law, Paul E. and Betty J. Roach of Doylestown,
Larry and Linda Roach of Kissimmee, Fla.; daughter, Corinne Westover of
LaVerne, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Roach lived in the Akron area for 35 years, moving to Doylestown
in 1995. He was a member of the Akron Baptist Temple, Civil Air Patrol
during World War II, and retired from the Royal Crown Bottling Co.
