Gerald 'Smokey' Huber
Died: Thursday, December 5, 2002
ST. SEBASTIAN Ð Gerald "Smokey" Huber, 66, of St. Sebastian, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at 5:20 p.m. at his home.
He was born June 10, 1936, in Dayton to Urban and Marian (Moeller) Huber.
He married Joan Schwieterman Nov. 7, 1956.
He is survived by his wife; his mother, of Coldwater; four daughters, Mrs. Ted (Jennifer) Ripploh of Minster, Mrs. Mike (Ann) Evers of St. Henry, Mrs. Tim (Jane) Miller of Bryant, Ind. , and Mrs. Steve (Amy) Schmitz of Fort Recovery; and two sons, Jerry Huber of Tipp City and Jay Huber of Maria Stein.
He is also survived by five sisters, Sister Lillian Huber of Cincinnati, Mrs. Paul (Velma) Billerman of Celina, Mrs. Denny (Phyllis) Stachler of Burkettsville and Alice Theiman of Rockford; a brother, Don Huber of McCartyville; and 15 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father and a brother.
Mr. Huber was retired from Huffy in Celina and worked at Chickasaw Qwik Stop.
He was a member of St. Sebastian Catholic Church, the Marion Local Athletic Boosters and the Chickasaw Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was a former member of the Moulton Merchants and Chickasaw Indians fast-pitch softball teams, and a former volunteer firefighter with the Chickasaw Fire Department.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Bensman officiating. Burial will be in the St. Sebastian Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Sunday from 2-7 p.m. and Monday from 1-2 p.m. at Hogenkamp Funeral Home in Coldwater.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mercer/Darke County Hospice or the Chickasaw Fire Department.
 
George A. Strunk
Died: Thursday, December 5, 2002
George A. Strunk, 78, 117 Stewart St., died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at 3:15 p.m. at Fair Haven Shelby County Home, where he had lived since October 2001.
He was born May 9, 1924, in Parkers Lake, Ky. to Lewis and Margaret (Garland) Strunk.
On April 8, 1944, he married Katherine Carrere, who survives.
Other survivors are a son, Donald L. Strunk of Sidney; a daughter, Brenda A. Browning of Sidney; four sisters, Effie Holloway of Anna and Gladys "Cookie" Gibbs, Ruby Wilburn and Wanda Cotterman, all of Sidney; two brothers, Ralph Strunk and Robert Strunk, both of Sidney; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and a sister.
Mr. Strunk worked at Monarch Machine Tool before retiring in 1986.
He was an original member of Solid Rock Pentecostal Church and a member of the church council.
Funeral services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at the church, with the Rev. Anthony Krummery officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Point Cemetery in Pasco.
Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Cromes Funeral Home.

Ruth M. Crim
Died: Wednesday, December 4, 2002
Age: 91
Ruth M. Crim, 91, a resident of Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Minster, formerly of 323 Buckeye Ave., died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002 at 6:55 a.m. at the nursing home.
She was born Oct. 20, 1911 in Rifle, Colo. to Peter and Osa Schmidt.
She married Joseph Crim.
Mrs. Crim is survived by two brothers, a sister and a grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a son.
Mrs. Crim worked at Wagner Manufacturing for many years, and also owned an embroidery business.
She was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gerald Bensman officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Point Cemetery in Pasco.
Calling hours will be Friday from 5-8 p.m. at Salm-McGill and Tangeman Funeral Home.
 
C. Eugene Gottschalk
Died: Wednesday, December 4, 2002
Age: 71
C. Eugene Gottschalk, 71, of St. Marys, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002 at 6:58 p.m. at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in St. Marys.
Calling hours will be Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys.

Eugene Gottschalk
Died: Wednesday, December 4, 2002
Age: 71
Eugene Gottschalk, 71, of St. Marys, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002 at 6:58 p.m. at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He was born Nov. 16, 1931 in St. Marys to William and Grace (Moorman) Gottschalk.
On June 19, 1955, he married Maxine Howell.
Mr. Gottschalk is survived by three sons, Jeffrey Gottschalk of Minster, Timothy Gottschalk of Independence, Ky. and Craig Gottschalk of St. Marys; two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Pamela) Matejovsky of Dayton and Mrs. Robert (Karen) Voisard of Cincinnati; a brother, Larry Gottschalk; and 13 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a brother.
A 1949 graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School, Mr. Gottschalk was a veteran of the Air Force.
He owned Gottschalk Television in St. Marys for many years. After retiring, he drove a truck for Kirk National Lease Co.
He was a member of American Legion Post 323 in St. Marys and Eagles Lodge 767. He was a past president of the St. Marys Jaycees, and formerly served on the St. Marys Planning Commission.
Mr. Gottschalk was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in St. Marys. He enjoyed hunting and camping with his family.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in St. Marys, with the Rev. Patricia Minnick officiating. Burial will be at Swamp College Cemetery in Celina. American Legion Post 323 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9289 will conduct joint military graveside rites.
Calling hours will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys. A memorial service will be held by the American Legion at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions can be made to the American Lung Association.
 
Joann Schwarck
Died: Tuesday, December 3, 2002
Age: 62
NEW KNOXVILLE - Joann Schwarck, 62, 202 E. German St., died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002 at her home of an apparent heart attack.
She was born Aug. 8, 1940 in Auglaize County, the daughter of Raymond and Marguerite (Athmer) Warner.
She married Larry Schwarck Oct. 25, 1958 and he survives her. She is also survived by her mother in New Bremen; four children, Lori J. Drexler of New Bremen, Mrs. David (Lisa) Williams of New Bremen, David Schwarck of New Knoxville and Dennis Schwarck of St. Marys; six grandchildren; and two nieces.
She was preceded in death by her father and one brother.
Mrs. Schwarck was an Avon representative and cleaned commercial businesses. She was a seamstress and tailored clothing for area residents.
She was a member of the First United Church of Christ in New Knoxville and was a 1958 graduate of New Bremen High School. She enjoyed sewing, embroidery work and gardening.
Services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First United Church of Christ by Rev. David Hunt. Burial will be in Pilger Ruhe Cemetery, New Knoxville.
Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home in St. Marys and one hour before services at the church.

John Grimes
Died: Monday, December 2, 2002
Age: 82
John Grimes, 82, 3003 Cisco Road, died Dec. 2, 2002, at 4:35 p.m. in Dorothy Love Retirement Community.
Born Oct. 5, 1920, in Marion, Ohio, he was the son of the late Fred Grimes and Hazel Addis Grimes.
On March 15, 1952, he married Frances G. Johnston Grimes. She died on Nov. 2, 1997.
Survivors include one daughter, Anne Grimes of Milwaukee, Wis.; one son; Stephen Grimes of Maineville, Ohio, one sister, Eleanor Gayer of Birdsboro, Penn., and two grandchildren.
One son and one sister preceded him in death.
Mr. Grimes was a retired Navy veteran after 20 years of service. He served in the South Pacific in WWII.
He received his bachelor's of science degree in business administration from Miami of Ohio and his master's of business administration from Stanford. He was a Phi Beta Kappa.
In 1985 he retired from his employment at Copeland Corp.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Oliver and Peg Amos Chapel at Dorothy Love Retirement Community with the Rev. Fred B. Lacuesta officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Condolences may be expressed through cromesfh@bright.net. The Cromes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lois A. McCracken
Died: Monday, December 2, 2002
Age: 62
PIQUA - Lois A. McCracken, 62, of 300 County Road 25-A, a teacher with Sidney City Schools for 30 years, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002 at 10:55 p.m. at her residence.
She was born Dec. 13, 1939 in Crane Township, Wyandot County, the daughter of Daniel and Agnes Mae (Everhart) Walton.
She married James McCracken, June 19, 1976 and he survives with three sons, Randy McCracken of Washington, La., Rodney McCracken of Naperville, Ill. and James McCracken II of Anna; two daughters, Diana McCracken of Atlanta, Ga. and Colleen McCracken of Piqua; and seven grandchildren.
She is also survived by three brothers, Lewis Walton of Carey, Philip Walton of Upper Sandusky and Delbert Walton of Wharton. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.
Mrs. McCracken graduated from Wharton High School in 1957 and from Bluffton College in 1965 with a degree in elementary education. She also attended the University of Dayton, the University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University and received a degree in special education from the University of Findlay.
She had taught school in Wharton, and Miamisburg before joining Sidney Schools. She was a 4-H advisor for 20 years, a volunteer at Wilson Memorial Hospital for five years and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sidney, the Retired Teachers Association and Ohio Education Association.
As a homemaker, she loved to read, crochet and cook.
Mr. and Mrs. McCracken were the owners of Mac's Food Concession for 19 years.
Services will be conducted Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Cromes Funeral Home by Rev. Ellis Hackler. Burial will be in Fletcher Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home in Sidney.
Memorial contributions may be made to Wilson Hospice Care or the First Presbyterian Church in Sidney.

Brice J. Richards
Died: Monday, December 2, 2002
Age: 86
Brice J. Richards, 86, 614 N. Miami Ave., died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, in Wilson Memorial Hospital.
Born March 4, 1916, in Sidney, he was the son of the late Calvin Richards and Syvilla Hobbie Richards.
On June 3, 1941, he married Dorothy E. Chalmers Richards, who preceded him in death.
Survivors include on son, Larry Richards of Rainbow City, Ala.; one daughter, Mrs. Mike (Sandra) Lescowitch of Jackson Center; two half-sisters, Mrs. H.D. (Dorothy) Hewitt of Columbus and Martha Dicke of Fort Loramie, and one half-brother, William M. Dicke of LaMesa, Calif.
One brother, one half-brother and one half-sister preceded him in death.
Mr. Richards was a 50-year member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, a life member of the Ohio Gun Collectors Association, a life member of the Shelby County Deer Hunters Association, a life member of the National Rifle Association and a member of the Shelby County Historical Society.
He was a carpenter and woodworker by trade.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the Cromes Funeral Home with the Rev. Philip K. Chilcote officiating. Burial will follow in Shelby Memory Gardens, Sidney. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Condolences may be expressed through Cromesfh@bright.net.

Ruby Jean Rogers
Died: Monday, December 2, 2002
Age: 74
Ruby Jean Rogers, 74, of Sidney, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002 at Wilson Memorial Hospital.
She was born in October, 1928 in Sylvania, Ohio, the daughter of Logan and Eleanor (Smith) Rogers, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by two daughters, Ellen Dannin of Ann Arbor, Mich. and Jill Spears of West Hartford, Conn.; a son, Charles Dannin of Dayton; five grandchildren; three sisters, Melva Colegrove of Delaware, Janice Harrah of Talmadge and Iris Ellis of Florida.
Ms. Rogers was a graduate of Miami Valley School of Nursing and St. Paris High School. She had been a full-time volunteer in Shelby County, working with the Shelby County Historical Society and Ross Historical Center, the Shelby County Humane Society, Shelby County Crisis Hotline and FISH. She was an avid enthusiast of Civil War history and re-enactments. He enjoyed historical works and using her nursing skills to help sick and homeless animals. She was Presbyterian.
At her request. Ms. Rogers' body was donated to the Wright State Medical School. 
A special gathering of Jean Rogers' friends will be held on Friday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Ross Historical Center, at the corner of North Street and Main Avenue in Sidney, to celebrate her life. Special remarks will be given at 6:30 p.m. For information or directions, call 498-1653.
