John Dome
John Dome, 83, administrator emeritus and former
associate professor of geography at Miami University and founder and director
of the university's audiovisual department, died Sunday, Jan. 10, from
heart failure at his home in Oxford. Dome was a 1936 graduate of Miami
who began his career in aviation.
Dome returned to Miami in 1945 to become an assistant
professor of aeronautics.
He taught photography classes as well, and instituted
Miami's audiovisual service in 1949.
Dome served on Oxford City Council and the Oxford
Planning Commission and was a member and past president of Oxford Rotary
Club.
Dome was preceded in death by his wife, Grace.
No service or visitation is planned.
The Smith & Ogle Funeral Home, Oxford, was
in charge of arrangements.

Ivan Lawson
Ivan Delano Lawson, 60, died Jan. 13, 1999, at
Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. He was born July 15, 1938, in Big Woods,
Ky., to Jessee and Verona Lawson. He graduated from Middletown High School
in 1956 and from Miami University in 1960.
He married Phyllis Cox on Aug. 27, 1960 in Middletown.
He worked at AK Steel Corporation in Middletown for 29-1/2 years. He lived
in Camden. Services for Ivan Lawson were held Saturday at Camden United
Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jackie Marshall officiating. Burial was
in the Fairmount Cemetery, Camden.
R.C. Nein & Sons-Thompson Funeral Home, of
Camden, was in charge of the arrangements.

Janet L. Scherer
Janet L. (Ramey) Scherer, 65, of Liberty, Ind.,
died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999 at Reid Memorial Hospital in Richmond, Ind.,
following a lengthy illness. She was born March 3, 1933 in Union County,
Ind.
She retired in 1997 after 28 years as a cook at
Union County High School. Prior to that, she had worked at Philco in Connersville,
Ind.
She married James C. Scherer in Liberty, Ind.
on Jan. 22, 1954.
Services were held Monday, Jan. 18 at Showalter-Blackwell-Long
Funeral Home, Baker-Fosdick Chapel, in Liberty, Ind. The Rev. Bruce Ross
of the Glen Este Church of Christ in Cincinnati officiated. Burial was
in the Sims Cemetery, Franklin County, Ind.
Contributions may be made at the chapel to the
Sims Cemetery or the Glen Este Church of Christ.

Mildred M. Tharp
Mildred M. Tharp, 80, of Oxford, Ohio, died at
her home early Wednesday morning.
Tharp was born March 10, 1918 in Mt. Carmel, Ind.
She graduated from Springfield High School, Townsport, Ind., with the class
of 1937.
In 1943, she married Glenn Tharp of Cincinnati,
Ohio. Later, they moved to Oxford where they farmed for many years.
Services were held Saturday, January 16, 1999
at 10 am at the Smith and Ogle Funeral Home in Oxford with Rev. Larry Tharp
presiding.
Burial was in the Springdale Cemetery, Ripley,
Ohio.

Dorothy L. Kitts
Dorothy L. Kitts, 56, of Oxford, died at University
Hospital in Cincinnati on January 12, 1999.
Kitts was born February 22, 1942 in Wolfe County,
Kentucky. On March 27, 1970, she married Donald Kitts in Powell County,
Kentucky. Later, they moved to Oxford and she became an employee at Miami
University where she was a printing technician for 29 years.
Visitation was held on Thursday, January 14, 1999
at the Smith and Ogle Funeral Home in Oxford.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested donations
be made to Harold Lansaw, 15153 Viney Street, West College Corner, Ind.,
47003.

Eleanor H. Dodds
Eleanor H. Dodds, 87, of Hamilton, died Jan.
15, 1999 at her residence.
She was born Aug. 23, 1911 in Hanover Township.
She graduated from Hanover High School in 1930 and graduated from Mercy
Hospital School of Nursing.
In Oxford, she worked for Dr. Stafford for eight
years and then with Dr. Dick for eight years and was a nurse for Western
College and then at Westover Retirement Community for 11 years, where she
retired in 1983.
Services were held Monday at the Webb Noonan Funeral
Home, Hamilton, with Pastor Rich Stuhmer officiating. Burial was in the
Oxford Cemetery.

Mina Lamm
Mina Lamm, 91, of Eaton, Ohio, passed away Saturday,
January 16, 1999 at Heartland Nursing Home in Eaton. She was born on June
27, 1907 in Lafayette, Ind. She married Chester A. Lamm on April 19, 1924.
Private services will be held at the R.C. Nein
& Sons-Thompson Funeral Home, 249 N. Main Street, Camden, Ohio at the
convenience of the family. Burial is to follow in the Fairmount Cemetery.

Nellie Marcum
Nellie Marcum, 74, died Monday, Jan. 18, at the
Oxford View Nursing Center, following a lengthy illness. She was born March
6, 1924, in Manchester, Ky.
She was employed by Miami University and retired
from there after many years of service.
Services were Friday, Jan. 22, at the Britton
Funeral Home, Manchester, Ky. Burial was in the Marcum Cemetery, Manchester,
Ky.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be
made to the Oxford Chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

David L. Lydy
David Lee Lydy, 62, died suddenly on Monday,
Jan. 11, 1999. He was born April 27, 1936 in Elwood, Ind.
He retired from Procter and Gamble after 29 years
of service and was a member of the Oxford United Methodist Church.
Services were held Thursday, Jan. 14 at the Oxford
United Methodist Church, with burial in the Oxford Cemetery. Arrangements
were made with the Smith and Ogle Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association
or the Oxford United Methodist Children's Church School.

Ruby Vietor
Ruby Vietor, 86, of Liberty, Ind., died in the
early morning hours on Thursday, January 28, at McCullough-Hyde Memorial
Hospital in Oxford. Born December 28, 1912 in Wayne County, Ind., Ruby
was a past member of the Eastern Star.
She was employed by the Dunlapsville Grade School
and the Union County High and Elementary Schools as a cook. She retired
in 1972 after more than 25 years of service.
Private funeral services will be conducted at
the convenience of the family at the Showalter-Blackwell-Long Funeral Home,
Baker-Fosdick Chapel, Liberty, Ind. Burial will take place in Dunlapsville
Cemetery, Union County, Ind. There was no public calling.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Union
County Foundation for the Dunlapsville Cemetery.

Thomas J. Cobbe
Miami professor of botany emeritus, Thomas J.
Cobbe, 80, died of cancer early Saturday at Garden Manor Retirement Center.
He was born in Cincinnati, July 18, 1918, received his bachelor's degree
from the University of Cincinnati and his doctorate from the University
of Michigan.
He came to Miami as an instructor in 1957, advanced
the next year to assistant professor, and in 1968 to associate professor.
Cobbe retired in 1984.
Memorial services are set at Miami University's
Sesqui-centennial Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4. Smith & Ogle
Funeral Home, Oxford is handling arrangements.
Contributions in lieu of flowers may be sent to
the Cincinnati Art Museum.

Dennis E. Naken
Dennis E. Naken, 64, of Punta Gorda Isles, died
January 31. Born September 25, 1934 in Detroit, Dennis was a mechanical
engineer with the Square "D" Company and was a member of Punta Gorda Elks.
The service and burial will be decided at a later
date.
