Frances Miller: Yorktown resident

Frances J. Miller, a resident of Yorktown, died October 26.

She was born in the Bronx to John and Rose Mills.

She worked as a school teacher for New York City, in Peekskill and the Bronx for more than 30 years before retiring in 1988.

She was an active parishioner of St. Patrickís Church in Yorktown.

She was educated in New York and graduated from Hunter College. She also earned a Masterís Degree in Business Administration from New York University.

On December 29, 1951, she married Anthony K. Miller at St. Johnís RC Church in Kingsbridge, Bronx.

She lived in Yorktown Heights for the past 48 years. Locally, she was a hospice volunteer, avid dancer and world traveler.

She will be remembered for her deep faith, selflessness, and cheerful spirit.

She is survived by her son, Rev. Abraham A.J. Miller of Chicago; daughter Terese Wildrick of Yorktown; three grandsons, Brian, Kevin and Daniel Wildrick; and one sister, Rita Byrne of Roscoe, New York.

Her husband, Anthony K. Miller, predeceased her.

Margaret Bushek: Yorktown resident

Margaret Bushek, a resident of Yorktown, died October 25 at home.

She was 88.

She was born in Yonkers to John and Julia Surovy.

She married Joseph P. Bushek at Holy Trinity Church in Yonkers on June 25, 1939. He predeceased her in May of 1991.

Mrs. Bushek was a member of many local organizations: a lifetime member of the Columbietteís, the Red Cross, the Altar and Rosary Societies and the Choir of St. Patrickís Church and a Senior Club member.

She will be remembered for her tireless dedication to the Columbiettes and her ability to touch everyone in a special way with her smile and personality.

She is survived by her son, Joseph, daughter-in-law Kathleen of Tribes Hill, New York; two grandchildren Sarah of Fort Collins, Colorado and Genevieve of Tribes Hill, New York; one sister, Mildred; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary A. Richmond: Ossining resident

Mary A. Richmond, a resident of Ossining, died October 25 at Rosary Hill Home in Hawthorne.

She was 80.

She worked as a Supervisor for Lederle Labs in Pearl River for 20 years before retiring in 1974.

She was born September 15, 1922 in Nevada, Iowa to Jens and Amanda Johansen Jacobsen.

She was educated in Brooklyn and graduated high school in 1940.

She married Gilbert Richmond in the Church of the Good Shephard in Pearl River on October 31, 1969. He predeceased her in 1991.

She lived in Lakewood, New Jersey for the past 12 years. Before that, she lived in New Smyrna Beach, Florida from 1973 to 1990 and in Pearl River from 1954 to 1973.

She was a member of the Eastern Star, Pearl River, and the Church of the Good Shephard, Pearl River.

She will be remembered as President of the Hospital Auxiliary ("Pink Ladies") of New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

She is survived by her son, Earle R. Ellefson, of Croton, New York; daughter Lynn Sengstacken of Congers, New York; granddaughters: Jill Ellefsen of Briarcliff and Amanda Sengstacken of Congers; brother, Andrew Jacobsen of Boulder City, Colorado, and a sister, Katherine Wood of Ocala, Florida.

Robert M. Egan: Mahopac resident

Robert M. Egan, a resident of Mahopac, died October 25.

He was 54.

He is survived by his wife, Deirdre; two sons, Robert and Kevin; and one sister, Roseanne Hogan.

Veronica Monholand: Mohegan Lake resident

Veronica M. Monholand, a resident of Mohegan Lake, died October 28.

She was 77.

She worked as a Claims Adjuster for New York Life Insurance in New York City.

She was born August 29, 1925 in New York City to Arthur and Mae Kelly Moore.

She was educated in New York City and graduated from Walton High.

She married William H. on October 30, 1949 at St. Nicholas of Tolentine in Bronx.

She lived in Mohegan Lake for the past 11 years. Before that she lived in Yonkers from 1979 to 1991.

She is survived by three daughters Claire, Denise and Maureen; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Claire.

Her beloved husband William predeceased her in 1984.

Carlene Viravec: Peekskill resident

Carlene Viravec, a resident of Peekskill, died November 1 at the Cortlandt Healthcare Center.

She was 83.

She was born September 25, 1919 to Douglas H. and Minnie Elizabeth Mansfield Heady.

She worked for the New York Telephone Company in Peekskill from 1938 to 1944, and was a longtime member of St. Peterís Church.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed crocheting.

On May 5, 1940, she married Joseph T. Viravec at the Assumption Rectory. He died February 27, 1964.

She was also predeceased by her sister, Bessie Heady.

She is survived by one daughter, Nancy of Peekskill; one son, Joseph and daughter-in-law Marlene; grandson Daniel and his wife Krystal; and three great-grandchildren, Corey, Catherine, and Nicholas, all of Knoxville, Tennessee.

Harry Hoffman: Peekskill resident

Harry Hoffman, a resident of Peekskill, died October 28 at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

He was 88.

He was born September 30, 1914 in Brooklyn to Samuel and Lena Bly Hoffman.

Mr. Hoffman was a buyer of menís clothing for Deansgate in New York City. He served in the Coast Guard during World War II.

He is survived by one daughter, Judith Hoffman Corwin, an illustrator and writer in New York City; one sister, Miriam Mendelowitz of Peekskill; three brothers, Sol Hoffman of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Murray Hoffman of Eugene, Oregon and Fred Hoffman of Queens; and one grandson, Oliver Jamie Corwin, also an illustrator and writer in Manhattan.

Jean Graham: Yorktown resident

Jean V. Graham, a resident of Yorktown, died November 2.

She was 64.

She worked as a teacher for Lakeland School District for 15 years before retiring in 1991.

She was born January 21, 1938 in Rochester to Albert and Stella Dudinski Vogler.

She earned a bachelorís degree in physical education from Brockport State in 1959.

On April 17, 1960, an Easter Sunday, she married James S. Graham at Asbury Methodist Church in Rochester. She lived in Yorktown for the past 40 years.

She will be remembered for her love of children, family, friends, country and community volunteer work.

She is survived by her mother, Stella; two sons, Douglas and wife Marie, and James A. and wife Lisa; grandchildren Robert, Elizabeth and Austin; son David S., daughter Leslie A.L. and sister Dorothy Lamb.

She was predeceased by her husband, James, in 1992, and father, Albert, in 1992.

Josephine Amato: Granite Springs resident

Josephine M. Amato, a resident of Granite Springs, died October 29.

She was born January 23, 1921 to Michael and Rose Fanelli in New York City.

On October 22, 1950, she married Anthony Amato at St. Josephís Church in New Rochelle.

She was a member of the LeAmiche Lodge in Yonkers.

She was predeceased by her husband Anthony in September 1995.

She is survived by five sons, Michael, brother Gabriel Mary Amato, T.O.R. (James), Anthony, Robert and Steven; two daughters-in-law, Agnese and Alice; two brothers, Frank and Daniel Fanelli; and seven grandchildren Jessica, Marie, Michael, Sarah, Agnese, Joshua and Reid.

She was predeceased by one brother, Michael.

Julia Astrab: Peekskill resident

Julia Astrab, a resident of Peekskill and Delray Beach, Florida, died November 2.

She was 85.

She was born on January 16, 1917, in New York City to Nickalas and Pawlina Procak Semchyshyn.

She was a graduate of the Corlears Business School in New York City.

On October 25, 1936 she married William Astrab at Sts. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Peekskill. He predeceased her in 1997.

She worked as a Facility Clerk in Cable Records in the plant department for the New York Telephone Company, Peekskill for 20 years, retiring in 1977. She belonged to the NY Telephone Co. Pioneers.

She was a communicant at Sts. Peter and Paul Byzantine Church, the Assumption Church, Peekskill, and Holy Apostles Church, Lake Worth, Florida, where she was active in the Ladies Auxiliary, preparing ethnic holiday pastries.

Her daughter, Donna S. Astrab of Peekskill and sister, Anna Danko of Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania survive, along with many nieces and nephews. One brother and two sisters predeceased her.

Max H. Richter, a resident of Putnam Valley, died October 28 at his home.

He was the beloved husband of Shirley Richter, and the cherished father of Marian Schwartz and Kenneth Richter.

Michael "Mickey" Burns: Montrose resident

Michael C. "Mickey" Burns, a resident of Montrose, died October 29 at Hudson Valley Hospital.

He was 61.

He was a Senior Account Clerk for Northern Westchester Joint Water Works before retiring in January.

He was born July 24, 1941 in Peekskill to James M. and Julia Hynes Burns.

Mr. Burns served in the US Navy from 1961 through 1965. He was a life member, and former President and Treasurer of the Verplanck Fire Dept., joining in 1959.

He also belonged to the Westchester County Volunteer Firemanís Association and was the former treasurer of the Montrose Fire District.

An avid sailor, he was a member of the Tin Can Sailors Association.

He is survived by his Soul Mate, Barbara A. Small, of Montrose; one son, Michael J. (Dana) Burns of Verplanck; three daughters, Patricia Burns, of Arizona, Elizabeth (Richard) Burns-Scott of Ardsley, and Julia Burns of Verplanck; two brothers, James A. (Cathy) Burns of Hyde Park, and Patrick (Patricia) Burns of Peekskill; one grandson, Michael Patrick Burns; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one sister, Julia I. Malcolm.

Roberta Mays Wells: Peekskill resident

Roberta Mays Wells, a resident of Peekskill since 1937, died October 25 at the Field Home-Holy Comforter Nursing Home in Yorktown.

She was 91.

Wells was born September 20, 1911 in Amelia Co., Virginia to George and Ardelia Randolph Mays.

She graduated from Russell Grove High School in Amelia Courthouse in Virginia. She worked as a self-employed beautician.

She was a member of the Park Street A.M.E. Zion Church in Peekskill, where she was a teacherís superintendent during the 1960ís. She was also a member of the Eastern Star Chapter 8 in Ossining.

Wells also worked for the Eastern Star Chapter in Ossining and for many years for the Peekskill Volunteer Ambulance Corps before retiring in the 1970ís.

She enjoying helping her friends and playing bingo.

In 1936, she married Robert Wells in Peekskill. He died in May 1963.

Wells is survived by two sisters, Gertrude Brown of Corona, New York and Helen Mays Bazar of Amelia Courthouse, Virginia.

Shane Guss: former Yorktown resident

Shane C. Guss, a former Yorktown resident, died November 1.

He was 31.

Guss worked in the service industry in New York City.

He was born August 18, 1971 in Mount Kisco to Charles and Paula Haltom Guss. He was educated in Yorktown, graduated from Yorktown High School in 1989 and earned a Bachelorís Degree in Business from Marist University.

Guss lived in New York City for the past five years. He will be remembered for his caring nature, loyalty to friends and his charming smile.

He is survived by his father, Charles Guss; one brother John Cromwell Guss of Memphis, Tennessee; three sisters, Stacey James of Rochester, New York, and Sydney and Callie Guss of Mahopac; paternal grandmother, Carol Guss; and maternal grandmother, Maire Sisk.

He was predeceased by his mother, Paula Alexander, and grandfathers, Carmen Guss and Edward Sisk.

William V. Connick Jr.: Ossining resident

William V. Connick Jr., a resident of Ossining, died November 1.

He was 67.

He was born December 25, 1934 in Tarrytown to William V. Connick Sr. and Catherine Irene Hueston.

Connick was the former president of B.C. Associates in Pleasantville, a graduate of Stepinac High School and Manhattan College. He was a parishioner of St. Theresaís Church in Briarcliff Manor.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; one daughter, Bethellen (Tyler) Tranzillo; one son, William III; and two granddaughters, Chelsea and Aubrey Tranzillo.
