MILFORD Miriam Cathey Chant, a 70-year resident of Milford and Twin Lakes, PA died Sunday, December 20 [1998] at home. She was 91.
The daughter of the late Frederick Alexander and Myrtle Davis Cathey, she was born in Gastonia, NC.
She was formerly employed as a real estate appraiser for Federal Home Loan Bank, NY and as office manager for B. Ryall Chant Associates, Pike County. She was an active member in community service in the Tri-State area for over 60 years, and was particularly interested in the Milford Garden Club and the Antiques Study Club.
Private funeral services were held at the convenience of the family.

William J. Eckhoff
CALLICOON CENTER William J. Eckhoff of Callicoon Center, a retired floor manager on the New York Stock Exchange, died Tuesday, January 5 [1999] in the Roscoe Community Nursing Home. He was 84.
The son of William and Anna Vogt Eckhoff, he was born August 10, 1914 in New York City.
He was the widower of Marie Han Eckhoff.
He was a member and past president of the Callicoon Center Fire Department, a member of the Schuetzen Berein, both in Callicoon Center, and a World War II Veteran of the US Coast Guard.
He is survived by a daughter-in-law, Janet Eckhoff Clewell of Beach Lake, PA; a grandson, Scott Eckhoff of Hawley, PA; a granddaughter, Lisa Eckhoff of Beach Lake, PA; and a cousin, Charles Eckhoff of Arizona. He was predeceased by a son, William R. Eckhoff.
Graveside services and burial were held on Thursday, January 7 at the Callicoon Cemetery.

Leonard Ferber
CALLICOON Leonard "Amos" Ferber of Callicoon, a retired heavy equipment operator for R & H Gorr in Hortonville and a lifelong area resident, died Saturday, January 2 [1999] at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayer, PA. He was 67.
The son of the late Edwin and Freda Staesser Ferber Wagner, he was born June 28, 1931 in Callicoon.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Hill Ferber, at home; his step-mother, Laura Ferber of Beechwoods; three daughters, Nancy Stalker of Equinunk, PA, Phyllis Ramsey of Jackson, Tenn., and Laurie Dirie of White Sulphur Springs; three sons, Joseph Ferber of Mongaup Valley, Ronnie Ferber of North Branch and Michael Ferber of Callicoon; three brothers, Robert Ferber of the state of Florida, George Wagner of Buffalo and Raymond Ferber of Beechwoods; four sisters, Susan Wagner Little of Delhi, Janet Wagner Harver of Otego, Linda Wagner Hooser of Oneonta and Virginia Ferber Stewart of Pine City; 14 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Timothy Ferber, a brother, Bruce Ferber, and his step-father Otto Wagner.
Services were held Tuesday at the Stewart Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon.

Gertrude Hoppe
JEFFERSONVILLE Gertrude Hoope of Jeffersonville, a homemaker, died Wednesday, January 6 [1999] at the Roscoe Community Nursing Home. She was 93.
The daughter of the late Paul and Marie Kopping, she was born August 12, 1905 in Germany. She was the widow of Karl Hoppe.
She is survived by a daughter, Inge Pfansteil of Jeffersonville; and two grandchildren, Linda Ruggiero of the state of Florida and Chris Pfanstiel of Jeffersonville.
Services were held at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral home in Jeffersonville with the Rev. Kristen Anderson officiating.
Cremation will be made in Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.

Dorothy V. Hill
ROSCOE Dorothy V. Hill of Roscoe, a homemaker and 50-year resident, died Friday, January 8 [1999] at Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 78.
The daughter of the late Alanson and Adella Garvey Krik, she was born August 18, 1920 in East Jewett.
She was a former librarian of the Roscoe Free library, a member of the United Church of Roscoe, a member of the ladies auxiliary and the Couple Club of the Cherish. She was also a member of the Roscoe and O&W Railway Association Inc., and a former member of the Roscoe-Rockland Garden Club. For many years she had been the organist at the Roscoe Community Nursing home for religious services.
Survivors include her husband Verylnn R. Hill, at home; one daughter, Darlene St. Amour of Scotia; one son, Robert Hill, of Fulton; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 11 at the United Church of Roscoe. The Rev. Bridgette LeConey officiated.
Burial will made in the Maplewood Cemetery in Hunter in the spring.

Jerry Janowski
OLYPHANT Jerry "Scoop" Janowski of Olyphant, PA, correspondent for the Scranton Times, died Saturday, January 2 [1999] at Mercy Hospital in Scranton, PA. He was 80.
The son of the late Johan and Angela Klaus Janowski, he was born in Jessup, PA. Janowski was a graduate of Dickson City High School and served with the US Navy during World War II. He began his newspaper career as the editor of the Olyphant Gazette.
He was a member of the Holy Ghost Church in Olyphant; a member and past commander of the Raymond Henry Post 327, American Legion, Olyphant; a 50-year member of the Olyphant Hose Co. 2; a member of the Tip Toe Club; the Frog Club and the Old Timers Club. He was the voice of St. Cyril's Saints Baseball Organization and was active in many other civic organizations.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline Wall Janowski; two sons, James of Narrowsburg, and David of Roxbury, NY; two daughters, Irene Stepien and Marie Pickerning, both of Olyphant; a brother, Edward of Florida; a sister, Josephine Gocek of Peckville; and nine grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Stanley; and two sisters, Stella DuPreay and Jean Buel.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 4 from the Michael P. Glinsky Funeral Home, Inc., with Mass in Holy Ghost Church in Olyphant.
Interment was in SS Cyril and Metyhodius Greek Catholic Cemetery in Peckville.
Full military rites were conducted by members of Raymond Henry Post 327, American Legion in Olypant.

Tillie Libitsky
BETHEL Tillie "Ginger" Libitsky of Bethel, a retired secretary for John Hancock Insurance Company in Manhattan, died Thursday, January 7 [1999] in Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla. She was 77.
The daughter of Anthony and Agnes Stepanuk Sedletzky, she was born on March 7, 1921 in New York City.
She was a member of the Jeffersonville Senior Citizens and St. George Roman Catholic Church in Jeffersonville.
She is survived by her husband, Robert of New City; one sister, Frances O'Connell; one brother, Stephen Sedletzky and his wife, Lillian of Bethel; nieces and nephews, Peter and Nancy Rubino Matrafailo of Youngsville, Ed and Donna Tyler of Swan Lake, Robert and Janice Zeller of Port Jervis and Dr. Kevin and Martha O'Connell of Georgia; and great-nieces and nephews, Kristie and Kori Rubin, Travis and Brett Tyler, R.J. Zeller and Cassandra O'Connell.
She was predeceased by a sister, Aileen Van Fradenburg.
A funeral Mass was held on Monday, January 11 in St. George's Roman Catholic Church in Jeffersonville. Burial was made in Calvary Cemetery in Youngsville.

Robert Lord
HONESDALE Robert Lord of Honesdale, PA, a well driller for Hook Well Drilling and Tim O'Connell Well Drilling, died Saturday, January 2 [1999] at home. He was 61.
The son of the late Myron and Permella P. Conklin Lord, he was born in Hankins, NY.
Prior to retirement he was employed by Honesdale Woodcraft Company. He was a member of the Damascus Baptist Church in Damascus.
He is survived by a son Randall of Honesdale; four brothers, his twin William of Honesdale, Russell of Pleasant Mount, PA, Ernest Gray of Maple Shade, NJ and Elvin Gray of Florida; five sisters, Gladys Enslin and Ruth Blaine, both of Waymart, PA, Evelyn Hansen and Ella Mills, both of Honesdale, and Estella Jennings of Olyphant, PA; a granddaughter, Sierra of Honesdale; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethyl Skinner and Eleanor Avery, and a nephew, Michael Enslin.
A private memorial service was held at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements were made by the Hessling Funeral Home in Honesdale.

Paul B. Mikulak
HONESDALE Paul B. Mikulak of Honesdale, PA, former chef at Steve's Diner and owner of Mikulak's Deli in Honesdale, died Thursday, January 7 [1999] in Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was 74.
The son of the late Wasil and Anastasia Brunak Mikulak, he was born in Carbondale, PA.
He was a US Navy Veteran of World War II, having served with the 12th Naval Seabee MU601SA in the Pacific. He worked part time for the Honesdale and Buckingham Township Police Departments and was a former Honesdale Constable. He was an active member of the Honesdale VFW, volunteered with the Honesdale Little League Baseball Association, and was a lifetime member and past president of the Honesdale Fire Department Hose Company One. He attended Grace Episcopal Church and was a former member of St. Basil's Russian Orthodox Church in Simpson, PA.
He is survived by his wife, Fay M. Schwab Mikulak; five sons, Paul B. Jr., Theodore J. and Peter D., of Honesdale, Gregory J. of Beach Lake, PA, and Sam B. of Pleasant Mount, PA; a daughter, Leslie R. Cordaro and her husband James, of Van Nuys, CA, two daughters-in-law, Kim of Honesdale and Ann Marie of Beach Lake; two sisters, Anna Savage of Clifford, PA and Margaret Fetchosky of Carbondale, PA; four grandchildren, William Earl, Hillary, Christopher, and Emily Fay; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Steven, Peter, Sam, Joseph and John, and two sisters, Mary Mullinsky and Frances Landers.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 9 at the Grace Episcopal Church in Honesdale. The Rev. F. Graham Cliff officiated. Interment was made in Indian Orchard Cemetery.

William Neill
JEFFERSONVILLE William Neill of Jeffersonville, a retired dairy farmer, a former head custodian at the Jeffersonville Youngsville Central School and a life-long area resident, died Sunday, January 3 [1999] at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. He was 98.
The son of the late Thornton and Jennie Hill Neill, he was born September 4, 1900 in Bethel.
He was the widower of Isabel Sleeth Neill.
He is survived by a daughter, Doris Bierstien of Lake Placid, FL; three granddaughters, Susan Fassett of Visalia, CA, Barbara Bartynski of Pittsburgh, PA and Katherine Allen of Blossvale; a grandson, Thomas Bierstine of Sarasota, FL; five great-grandchildren; two nephews, Robert and Henry Zahn, both of Long Island; and a special friend, Linda Baum of Liberty.
Services were held at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville on January 6. The Rev. Bill Bonwitt officiated.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS Dorothy L. Parks of White Sulphur Springs, a homemaker and life-long area resident, died Wednesday, December 30 [1998] at the Skilled Nursing Unit of Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 90.
The daughter of the late Charles A. and Henrietta Hunt Parks, she was born January 29, 1908 in White Sulphur Springs.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by six brothers, William, George, Bruce, Leland, Ora and Earl Parks; and three sisters, Jessie Parks, Blanche Parks and Ethel Wilbur.
Funeral services were held at the Harris Funeral Home in Liberty. The Rev. H.M. Fargo officiated.

Raymond W. Rhiel
SHOHOLA Raymond W. Rhiel of Walker Lake, Shohola, PA died Tuesday, January 5 [1999] at home. He was 72.
The son of the late Kenneth and Elizabeth Wilson Rhiel, he was born in Bethlehem, PA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy L. Kunsman Rhiel, in 1989, and a brother Kenneth.
He was a retired supervisor of the Five-A Tire Assembly Plant at Mack trucks of Allentown. He was previously the owner/operator of Orefield Pool Service and Supply in Orefield and also worked as a self-employed electrician in the Lehigh Valley area. He was a member of the Milford American Legion Post and the National LMS Naval Fleet Association.
Survivors include three sons, Raymond W. "Butch" Jr., and Gary A., both of Bethlehem, and Scott of Framingham, MA; a daughter, Mary Rhiel Brokenshire of Shenandoah, PA; two brothers, Robert of Langhorne, PA and Wesley of Swoyersville, PA; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Long Funeral Home in Bethlehem on Saturday, January 9. Interment was in the Nisky Hill Cemetery in Bethlehem.

Evelyn Schaefer
JEFFERSONVILLE Evelyn Schaefer of Jeffersonville, a homemaker and life-long area resident, died Monday, January 4 [1999] at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 79.
The daughter of the late Harry and Elsie Baum Soule, she was born December 3, 1919 in Jeffersonville.
She was the widow of George Schaefer.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid of the church, both in Jeffersonville.
She is survived by a son, Warren William Schaefer of Jeffersonville; four daughters, Winnie Grishaber, Betty Peters and Diane Hammett, all of Jeffersonville, and Sally Rubino of Obernburg; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Melvin Soule and a sister, Ethel VanSchoick.
Services were held on Thursday, January 7 at Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville.
Burial was made in the Jeffersonville Lutheran Cemetery.

Son of the late Thaddeus and Catherine Erringer Ward, he was born in Brooklyn, NY.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Ward; a brother, Walter of Amityville, NY; a sister, Doris Bates of Brooklyn, NY; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, January 8 at St. Ann's RC Church in Shohola. The Rev. Michael Quinnan officiated.

MARTHA H. ARLT
NARROWSBURG Martha H. Arlt of Narrowsburg, a housewife and lifelong area resident, died Thursday, January 14 [1999] at Mid Valley Hospital in Peckville, PA.
Daughter of William Oellrich and Marie Marschhaussen Oellrich, she was born November 10, 1908, in Narrowsburg. She was the widow of Rudy Arlt.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Honesdale, PA; the Tusten Senior Citizens; and the Sullivan County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include a niece, Gladys Moore of Plainview.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Anna Warfield and Frieda Anderson; and by two brothers, Emil (Deacon) Oellrich and George Oellrich.
Cremation took place at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory in Archbald, PA.

WILLIAM BANUAT
PLEASANT MOUNT William Banuat of Pleasant Mount, a retired self-employed farmer, a former employee of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and a former resident of North Branch, died Sunday, January 10 [1999] at home. He was 79.
Son of the late Fred and Caroline Bergman Banuat, he was born July 15, 1919, in North Branch.
Survivors include his wife, Ethel Aho Banuat, at home; two sons, Chris Merklin of Pleasant Mount and Gordon Merklin of Olympia, WA; two daughters, Priscilla Albert of Levittown, PA and Elaine at home; a brother, Louis of Flemington, NJ; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, including Lorraine Snyder of Callicoon and Arthur Young of Honesdale, PA.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Louise Young Duraski and Clara Herbert; and a brother, Charles.
Services were held at the Robert W. Jones Funeral Home in Forest City. Following cremation, burial took place in Wheeler Hill Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant Township.

ROBERT LEE BELCHER
GREENVILLE TWP. Robert Lee Belcher of Greenville Twp., a retired heavy equipment operator with the New York State Highway Department and lifelong area resident, died Saturday, January 16 [1999] in Orange County Residence and Infirmary in Goshen. He was 72.
Son of Harry and Ruth Mason Belcher, he was born August 2, 1926, in Greenville Twp.
He was a member of the Civil Service Employees Association.
Survivors include his wife, Caroline M. Van Tassel Belcher, at home; a son, Robert T. of Greenville; three daughters, Linda L. Vail of Port Jervis, Virginia Ann Spangenberg of Sparrowbush and Patricia L. Henn of Montague, NJ; three brothers, William P. of Greenville, Harry Jr. of Port Jervis and Raymond of Bath; a sister, Virginia Scheer of Norwich; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services were held at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home in Port Jervis. The Rev. Chris Arveson officiated. Burial was in Maning Cemetery in Greenville.

ANNA BIESTER
MIDDLETOWN Anna Biester of Middletown, retired co-owner of a delicatessen in Smithtown, LI and a 36-year area resident, died Sunday, January 10 [1999] at Middletown Park Manor. She was 87.
Daughter of the late August and Josephine Wiedermann, she was born June 3, 1911, in Fritzlar, Germany. She was the widow of Max Biester.
She had been a chambermaid at the Brookside Lodge in Barryville for several years. She was a member of the Senior Citizens in Monticello.
Survivors include three sons, Karl of Toms River, NJ, Maximilian of Toccoa, GA, and Richard of Monticello; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services were held at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home in Port Jervis. The Rev. William Coy officiated. Burial was in Montoza Cemetery in Barryville.

COCHECTON Leona Jones of Cochecton, a homemaker and 10-year area resident, died Monday, January 11 [1999] in Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 69.
Daughter of the late George B. and Phoebe A. Brown, she was born August 3, 1929, in Goshen.
Survivors include two nieces, Priscilla Da Vall of Ferndale and Nancy Naccarato of Kingston.
Services were held at Ramsay's Funeral Home in Kauneonga Lake. The Rev. David Coon officiated. Cremation took place at Cedar Hill Crematory in Newburgh. Burial was in the family plot in Wallkill Cemetery in Phillipsburg.

BETHEL Michele Karadontes of Bethel, a medical audit supervisor for the Sullivan County Department of Social Services in Liberty and a lifelong area resident, died Sunday, January 10 [1999] at home. She was 51.
Daughter of the late Michael and Helen Inez Bjorklund Esolen, she was born July 19, 1947, in Roscoe.
Survivors include her husband, Arthur Karadontes, at home; a daughter, Christine and a son, James, both of West Palm Beach, FL; two brothers, Timothy Esolen of North Carolina and Thomas Esolen of Liberty; an uncle and several cousins.
She was predeceased by a brother, Charles Esolen.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. George's RC Church in Jeffersonville. The Rev. Robert Nee officiated. Cremation took place at Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.

YONKERS Henry Merritt of Yonkers, NY, retired president of the Merritt Lining Corporation in New York, NY, died Saturday, January 2nd [1999] at Lawrence Hospital, in Bronxville, NY. He was 84.
Son of Charles and Nellie Merritt, he was born January 1, 1915 in New York, NY. He was a long-time member of the Hiawatha-Pleasantville Masonic Lodge # 434, serving as treasurer for many years and receiving the Distinguished Service Award. He was an Elder and a Deacon for the Lincoln Park Community Church in Yonkers, NY. 
He is survived by his wife, Agnes Piquet Merritt of Yonkers, NY; 3 children: Henry Jr. of New York, NY, Lawrence of Vancouver, B.C., Canada, and JoAnne of Tyler Hill, PA., and step-granchildren Shannon Hyacinthe of New York, NY and Mark Ross of Silver Springs, Maryland.

JAY H. STRUNK
NARROWSBURG Jay H. Strunk of Narrowsburg, owner of Jay's Garage, a retired auto mechanic, and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, January 12 [1999] in Julia Ribaudo Health Care Center in Lake Ariel, PA. He was 74.
Son of Herbert J. and Lillian Wyss Strunk, he was born January 8, 1925, in Honesdale, PA.
He was an Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II; a life member of Tusten Rod & Gun Club and the Lava Fire Department; a past member of the Narrowsburg Rifle & Pistol Club; past president of the Lava Cemetery Association; former delegate to the Sullivan County Fire Advisory Board; served on the Tusten Tax Review Board; a longtime delegate to the Federation of Sportsman's Club of Sullivan County; and received an award for Sportsman of the Year in 1985.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor, at home; two sons, Herbert of Honesdale and Russell of Huguenot; a brother, Donald of Cambridge; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services took place at Rasmussen Sons Inc. Funeral Home in Narrowsburg. The Rev. Elwood Mather Jr. officiated. Burial was in Lava Cemetery.

BEACH LAKE James Joseph Sloane of Beach Lake, PA, a retired truck driver for Sea-Land in Brooklyn, NY and a 26-year area resident, died Saturday, January 16 [1999] at home. He was 84.
Son of Michael Sloane and Mary Cassidy Sloane, he was born August 5, 1914, in New York, NY. He was the widower of Clare Allen Sloane.
Survivors include a daughter, Janet Wetzel of Copique, LI; four sisters, Kathleen Gartland of Beach Lake, Helen Pfeifer of LI, Mary O'Connor of Queens, NY, and Sister M. Victoria, OP of the Bronx, NY; a brother, John, of Rowlands, PA; a granddaughter, Susan; three grandsons, Richard, John and David; a great-granddaughter; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Michael.
A funeral Mass was offered at St. Francis Roman Catholic Church in Narrowsburg. The Rev. Thomas Jones officiated. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery in Middlevillage, NY.

ERNEST A. STAUDT
MONTAGUE Ernest A. Staudt of Montague, NJ, a retired farmer and longtime area resident, died Friday, January 1 [1999] in Milford Valley Convalescent Home in Milford. He was 100.
Son of the late John and Elizabeth Pantesz Staudt, he was born July 17, 1898, in Clifton, NJ. He was the widower of Julia Birmingham and Ethel Thomley.
He was a member and trustee of St. James the Greater Roman Catholic Church in Montague; a member of New Jersey Farm Bureau; Montague Grange; and the Senior Citizens of Montague and Sandyston Townships.
Survivors include a niece, Mary Patricia Walsh of Layton; and a nephew, Lawrence J. of Paul, Idaho.
He was predeceased by a brother, John, and a sister, Anna.
A funeral Mass was offered at St. James the Greater RC Church in Montague. The Rev. Gerald Lewis officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Port Jervis, NY.

DEBBIE A. TERPENING
PORT JERVIS Debbie A. Terpening of Port Jervis, a lifelong area resident, died Monday, January 11 [1999] in Mercy Community Hospital in Port Jervis. She was 25.
Daughter of Gene and Ann Witzel Terpening, she was born January 13, 1973, in Port Jervis.
Survivors include her parents of Port Jervis; two sisters, Rebecca Barrett of Walker Valley and Roxanne Howland of Portlandville; two brothers, Clinton T. of Port Jervis and Gene T. Jr. of Sparrowbush; her maternal grandmother, Grace Witzel of Port Jervis; and several cousins.
Services were held at Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home in Port Jervis. The Rev. Robert E. Foster officiated. Burial was in Pine Hill Cemetery in Sparrowbush.
